Aaron Flores is a registered dietitian nutritionist based out of Los Angeles, California. He also works at Center for Discovery as Senior Coordinator for Weight-Inclusive Care He uses Intuitive Eating and Health at Every Size® in his work to help individuals learn how to make peace with food and their bodies. He is a Certified Body Trust® provider and he also the co-host of the popular podcast, Dietitians Unplugged. We seem to think that disordered eating is a girl thing, perhaps because that's what the “numbers” tell us. But the numbers only reflect people who get help and people who know they have a problem. For various reasons, that doesn't quite frequently happen in men. Aaron and I talk about what may be similar or different in ED's in men. And we talk about shame. Sprinkled into this episode is Aaron's Star Wars love and his knack for taking lessons from the series. You can't see but his office is full of Star Wars paraphernalia. Stay tuned until the end, we chat a bit about clinicians who have their own ED and disordered eating struggles. I won't say more about that here, you'll have to listen!
Fellow anti-diet dietitian Aaron Flores returns to discuss unrealistic expectations placed on men and their bodies, the disconnect between the eating-disorder community and social-justice issues, why providers need to heal their own eating issues, the relationship between gym culture and diet culture, how pornopgraphy influences the way men learn about masculinity, tips for bringing your male loved ones into your process of diet-culture recovery, and so much more! Plus, Christy answers a listener question about whether joining fitness competitions can ever be helpful in eating-disorder recovery. (This episode originally aired on September 9, 2019.) This week I'm replaying an amazing discussion I had one year ago with registered dietitian Glenys Oyston. She lost weight, kept it off for years, and was considered a true success story. What people didn't realize is she didn't feel successful at all but instead was a full-time food and body obsession. Details on the episode are below. I'll be back next week with a new episode!!! * * * I am so excited to bring you this latest episode of Speaking of Hungry! I’ve been listening to the Dietitians Unplugged podcast with Glenys Oyston and Aaron Flores for quite some time now. Recently I was reading Christy Harrison’s Anti-Diet book and Glenys popped up. Then I was listening to the Pursuing Private Practice podcast and Glenys was the guest. I am beyond thrilled that Glenys, a Los Angeles-based anti-diet dietitian, joined me to chat on Speaking of Hungry. I know you’re going to like this one! Glenys joins me and talks about her relentless pursuit of weight loss, how losing weight was never enough, and that keeping weight off for several years meant taking obsessive measures. We talk about: Her dieting history starting in her early 20’s that led her to sign up for the National Weight Control Registry. How Glenys was a weight-loss “unicorn” who kept the weight off for over five years but this wasn’t all rainbows and butterflies. She explains the obsessive measures required to keep her weight off. How her weight loss journey led her to pursue becoming a registered dietitian. How her reaction to stressful times in her life was to tackle her weight and try to shrink her body. When her weight loss pursuit took a “dark turn” and persisted despite the struggle to keep losing. Her work with clients and Health at Every Size (HAES) program for diabetics currently in the works with Rebecca Scritchfield. Take your mind off of all that’s going on in the world right now. While most of us are in quarantine, we must be mindful that we still have needs and we still have our recovery to work on. We may not be able to give it 100% at this time but we have to try to give it something! I am so excited to bring you this latest episode of Speaking of Hungry! Aaron Flores, fellow non-diet dietitian, joins the show to chat about why providers need support, and how he’s helping align a national eating disorder treatment center with Health at Every Size® practices. Aaron owns a private practice in Calabasas, California and also works as the HAES® director at the eating disorder treatment facility, Center for Discovery. In his own practice, he uses HAES® and Intuitive Eating practices to help clients find peace with their bodies and food. He is also a certified Body Trust® Provider and the co-host of the podcast, Dietitians Unplugged. Aaron shares about his personal journey in disordered eating and how that led him to the field. We also get real about how it is important it is for providers to get their own help when struggling and ways to normalize and embrace the need for personal help in the field. In today's episode, we'll explore eating intuitively with diabetes. Can you blend intuitive eating and diabetes together? I know this may feel counter-intuitive. As a matter of fact, I hear and get this question very frequently because let’s be honest, food restriction and weight loss are what Dr.Google tells us we must do in order to live with diabetes. Unfortunately, as with most health education available on the internet, it’s not the whole truth...or the truth at all. I wanted to create the ultimate guide to help you with your diabetes journey and intuitive eating... and I did! This is a collaboration with two colleagues that are expert in the treatment of diabetes under the lens of Health at Every Size and Intuitive Eating. Rebecca Scritchfield is a Washington DC-based Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and Certified Exercise Physiologist. And, she has been practicing weight inclusive, HAES care since 2008. Rebecca is also the author of the book Body Kindness and the host of the Body Kindness podcast. Glenys Oyston is a Los Angeles-based Registered Dietitian Nutritionist. In addition, she has been practicing a HAES® philosophy since 2010 and has provided extensive diabetes education for the past five years. Glenys is co-host of the Dietitians Unplugged podcast. Me: “... but I need to lose weight”. Her: “Ok... I can see how you can think that.” Me: “Everything you are sharing with me makes so much sense and I can feel it inside of me, that it’s what I need [pause & sigh] … but I need to lose weight”. The tears started to roll off my cheeks. Uncontrollably crying. The tears were coming from the depth of my gut. It was one of those moments when you want to stop crying because you really don’t want to cry in front of strangers but you can’t... it’s not in your control. Her: “Stephanie, your desires to lose weight are valid. It’s normal that you want to lose weight. These desires are encouraged every day by the society in which we live in, an environment that is laden with weight stigma, body size discrimination, and fatphobia. It makes perfect sense that you want to lose weight.” I was deeply confused. Life is on hold until I lose weight I was 38 years old and the last 25 years of my personal life had been a series pressing “pause” and “play”. I only allowed myself to “play” my personal life when I was at a weight that was recognized by others to be ok. If I was gaining weight or not working hard to lose the “not normal excess weight,” my personal life was on “pause”. Her: “So, let’s work through this, Stephanie. Why do you want to lose weight? What do you feel will happen when you lose weight?” Me: “ Uhhh.....” No one ever asked me this question. I never asked myself this question either. My brain was stumped... blank. Her: “It’s normal that you don’t know how to answer this question. You likely never thought of the desire to lose weight as optional therefore never considered why you were desiring it.” She was right by that point it had been 27 years. Since my teens, I had lived on and off diets always chasing “another body”. The truth was my happiness was conditional to the way my body looked. Even when my body looked “ok” it was such a battle to keep it up that I didn’t have the mental space or time to fully enjoy my now “allowed happy life”. Me: “I guess you’re right...” Her: “Until we see each other again I want you to ask yourself these questions: Where is the desire to lose weight coming from? What do you feel will happen if you lose weight? Will you be treated differently? Will you feel beautiful? Worthy? Healthy? As a good perfectionist, I did my homework. I had so many Ah Ah moments... many realizations. It took me a while to fully accept what these questions forced me to see: As a strong, independent & feminist woman, I had given away my power. The journey back to my power The social conditionings of the patriarchy of our modern society had kept me very busy dieting and chasing after the false currency of beauty instead of chasing my dreams. Being consumed by the fear of how my body looks was keeping me away from my power. I found my power. My true power. The power to live my life now. I gave myself the permission to be enough unconditionally to what my body looks like or weight. I no longer needed to be perfect in “all the things” or to make choices to please others in fear of rejection In today’s episode, we welcome a guest, Aaron Flores is a Registered Dietician with a private practice is in Calabasas, CA. He uses Intuitive Eating and Health at Every Size® in his work to help individuals learn how to make peace with food and their bodies. Aaron is a Certified Body Trust® provider and he also the co-host of the popular podcast, Dietitians Unplugged. On this episode, Aaron and I answered the following questions: Why do we feel the need to lose weight? Is the pursuit of weight loss helpful? Can we take a weight-neutral approach to health? Fellow anti-diet dietitian Aaron Flores returns to discuss unrealistic expectations placed on men and their bodies, why we need to "smash the weightriarchy," the relationship between gym culture and diet culture, how pornography influences the way men learn about masculinity, tips for bringing your male loved ones into your process of diet-culture recovery, why providers need support to heal their own eating issues, and so much more. Plus, Christy answers a listener question about whether joining fitness competitions can ever be helpful in eating-disorder recovery. You CAN make peace with food even with PCOS and I want to show you how. Join our Facebook group to get extra support! Episode's Key Points: Elyse Resch joins to talk about intuitive eating! We all are the experts of our own bodies. Feelings of betrayal from food and your body can make finding body trust and connecting with your internal wisdom that much harder. Have self-compassion and gratitude for what our bodies CAN do! Let's shift our thinking... instead of listing all the foods you CAN'T eat when you struggle with something like celiac disease, figure out all the foods you CAN eat. Intuitive eating isn't JUST about flavor (Elyse calls it "the tongue")! It's also about tuning into how we FEEL when we eat certain foods. Intuitive eating is a combination of instinct, feeling, and thought! How do we use our body, education, taste, and intellect to help guide us in our choices? Healthy eating includes pleasure and satisfaction!! If we don't honor our hunger, we'll put ourselves in a situation where we're ravenous, and then we can't find satisfaction in our food. Likewise, if we eat without hunger present, food just doesn't taste as good! It's all about finding the middle ground with hunger. Feelings of deprivation lead directly to bingeing! Shifting our mentality can open the door to profound healing. Dieting doesn't work!! Lean into compassion... whatever we've done, we've done it because it's what we thought we needed to do at the time. It was a way to cope! We can't get mad at ourselves for doing our very best, even if it didn't turn out to be a sustainable path for progress. Come from a place of curiosity, rather than judgment. Guys have body image issues too, they just aren’t talking about it. In fact, research shows over 90% of men struggle in some way with body dissatisfaction and negative affect (negative opinions of self), or negative emotions and thoughts towards one’s body (Castonguay et al. 2014). In this episode, fellow HAES dietitian Aaron Flores and I discuss the “dad bod” that requires men to have muscle and a bit of softness to show they like to workout and eat pizza. While it’s still body oppression and a singular “ideal” for men to strive to become, we acknowledge that it’s much more forgiving and flexible than the thin ideals for women. We delve into the ways men’s body image issues look different than women’s and why most men wouldn’t dare to bring up their weight and body concerns with their friends. Mainly, it has to do with societal expectations of men to maintain power, be strong, and solve problems, not have problems. We discuss how men can set boundaries with their male friends around diets, weight loss, and muscles to protect their well-being. Aaron shares how he understands his male clients’ desires to change their bodies while helping them learn how to be more kind to their bodies through self-care instead of diets. Almost no one is free from beliefs, rules and attitudes about food. But some of us have experienced an undue amount of emotional pain as a result, riding this rollercoaster of harshly conditional self-love. And some people develop full blown eating disorders where rules, punishment, and rebellion formulate some of the most wretched, soul-destroying patterns to break free from. But ultimately, whether you have an eating disorder or are caught up in dieting and other disordered forms of eating, the truth is it's probably not about the food. I’ve had Aaron in my ears for a while now, because he is the man that hosts one of my favorite podcasts, namely Dietitians Unplugged, with the fabulous Glenys Oyston, whom I introduced you to in episode 12 of the "Life. Unrestricted." podcast. So it is high time you meet the other half of that wonderful podcast. And you will! Listen to Aaron talk about: – How he came up with his Star Wars analogy for Intuitive Eating and Health At Every Size versus diet-culture – How he experienced his body as a boy – How he and his family related to food – Why he’ll never forget his first trip to the dietitian with his mother – What the dietitian told him to do and why that set him up for the diet-binge-cycle – How he judged his body as an adolescent – How he ended up dieting for years and why he stopped – How diets fail all people, and why people still think "they failed" at the diet – What made him decide to become a registered dietitian – What he thought of Intuitive Eating and Health At Every Size when we first heard it – Why he clung to the idea of weight-loss for as long as he did – How his transition into Intuitive Eating went for him – How he is working on accepting his own body – Why his transition into Intuitive Eating made him eventually leave his job and open his own practice – What he has learned from his whole transformation – What made see the logic behind a weight-neutral approach to health – Why learning about Intuitive Eating and Health At Every Size is a lot like the movie "The Matrix" – How he handles his own judgmental side towards people, diets and bodies – Why he calls himself a feminist man and how he recognizes his privilege as a white male – How he wants to raise his boys – Why he is so grateful for his wife... ... Download Episode! Hello, lovely radicals! Time for another podcast ride; hold on tight! In this episode of the "Life Unrestricted" podcast, we are getting to know Glenys Oyston. Glenys is a Registered Dietitian who does NOT believe in dieting; she has seen behind the diet-culture BS and has become a Health At Every Size dietitian. Like many of her fellow RD’s that follow the Health At Every Size (HAES, for short) principles, she knows that it’s much more helpful to improve our relationship to our bodies and food than focusing on weight-loss. She has been a diet-victim for decades, just like many of us, and she has experienced just how much attention and congratulations we get when weight is lost. Therefore she knows exactly why so many people dread to gain weight. But instead of keeping on living in the pre-hell of either lusting after food or restricting it, she got taught a better way. She got educated about HAES, Health At Every Size, and as she says, it has transformed her life and the way she thinks about weight, diet and body image. Needless to say, she never dieted again and she is doing fabulous. She has helped countless humans ditch diet-mentality and find true self-acceptance and a healthy body image. She also writes the amazing blog called "Dare To Not Diet" and she is a fellow podcast lady. Together with Aaron Flores, she hosts the highly recommendable podcast "Dietitians Unplugged". Glenys tells us how she came to be a Health At Every Size (HAES) dietitian, and how the process of stepping out of the dogmatic diet-culture chains has helped her—finally, in her forties—to develop a relaxed and uncomplicated, peaceful relationship with food and her body. She shares her story with us and you’ll hear: – Why she never learned to eat balanced meals as a kid – How her mother’s diet-mentality kept her from eating with her daughter – How she ended up comforting herself with cookies and cake – Why she ended up repeating what her mother did: go on strict, restrictive diets – How dieting kept her mental and physical bandwidth trapped and made her obsess about food – How an incredibly lucky coincidence saved her from another 20+ years of yoyo-dieting – How studying the Health At Every Size (HAES) principles helped her free herself from eternal dieting – How she gave up on the "thin person-game" and learned to accept her body in its natural, happy shape – Why she thinks it’s no coincidence that diet-culture started skyrocketing after women got the right to – What is lost on the world when the majority of the female population is dieting/focusing so much energy on weight-loss – How diets are just as addictive as any other coping mechanism – Why it’s never really about the weight or our body, even when we think it is – What we have to work on before we can successfully ditch diets and embody ourselves – How she and her HAES-colleagues help their clients to un-diet and re-allow their previously restricted foods into their diet – Why the whole process of un-dieting requires a lot of trust, courage and strength – What her deepest wish is – What she would like to be remembered for... ...And so much more!
