A dance teacher wear’s many hats. Some days we act as a therapist while others we are an advisor. Sometimes a mentor and often a role model. We have all entered into this vocation to change lives, support healthy child development and maybe even inspire the pursuit of a career or education in dance. At the post-secondary and professional level this role does not change much, as professors, artistic directors and ballet masters have indicated that their roles involve aspects of mentorship, guidance and teacher. Today we will take a deeper look into the role of the mentor specifically for early career dance artists. GUEST: After completing her undergraduate training in Dance Theatre at Trinity Laban where she later also completed her master’s degree, Nina Atkinson founded the Loop Dance Company in 1993. In 2004 Nina returned from a two-year sabbatical in New York studying at the Limón Dance Foundation and in 2008 returned to New York to study on the first Limón Teachers Program. Nina’s research interests lie in creating artwork for unusual spaces, from large-scale site-specific work to intimate installation experiences. Nina is, a Lecturer at Canterbury Christchurch University and University of Roehampton and is currently a Visiting Lecturer for Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in their post graduate diploma in Community Dance program. Beth Bashert is the Mayor of Ypsilanti, MI. She’s incredibly passionate about music and the arts and has been an active community organizer. We met this year as fellow speakers for a Grove Studios event where I was inspired by her passion for Creatives and community building. In this episode, we discuss her role as a key player in community activism, the importance of dealing with mental health issues, why society must ensure creatives are paid, the power of truth, and the value of silence and patience. About the Guest: After over having lived here for 25 years, raised our family, and have been active in our community and in politics as a campaign manager and community organizer, I am proud to serve our city as an elected member of City Council. Ypsilanti has many challenges we have to meet and resolve in the next period of time. Water Street, a looming fiscal problem, changes in the economy and the need to lure businesses and residents to choose our community. I want to be a part of the solutions. In my work as a community organizer, I have been a leader who has brought people together time and time again. I have worked with hundreds of volunteers, communicated difficult and complex issues to a broad range of people, and had both victories and losses. In all that work, I was always trying to solve a problem, make our community safer or more comfortable for all people, or move a process forward. Whether you agree with every campaign or issue I have worked on, it is clear I am working towards solutions and cures. I regularly hold office hours where citizens can meet with me about any topic, question, concern, or just meet to get to know each other. Meeting one on one is also something I am happy to do. Advocacy, leadership, and the balance between both of those roles will be my goal. Agree or disagree, I will listen to everyone. It was after 6 years of office life that both Eric and his wife Zoe decided that this lifestyle didn't suit them anymore. They decided to up sticks and travel for a while. On this trip, they visited the permaculture research institute in Australia and helped out on several organic farms. Fascinated by small scale food production they ended up doing a full growing season on an organic farm in the Brecon Beacons. Now seriously interested in food production the studied sustainable horticulture at Schumacher College in 2011. This is where Eric crossed paths with Adam who was about to change from more traditional ways of growing mushrooms to a Low Tech approach. Back then this was mainly by growing mushrooms on coffee waste. The two of them decided to team up and GroCycle was started.

Everyone who I am talking to (in my age) it seems like we have the same story. We have this story of having that REALLY old computer. Parents bring home the IBM or the Commodore 64 and that really is my story. At the time, the only thing you could learn with it was to program – there weren’t any video games, etc. A book that I geeked-out about was: “DOS for Dummies.” The guest talks about his senior year in college and how he came to fall in-love with programming. 6:28 – Guest: After college, I got a job for working for a company that used C++ code. People ask: How the heck did you get into Web? My background, too, was tap dancing and in the arts. Most people don’t know that. I was giving these tap lessons to kids – and around that time YouTube was just for cat videos. At the time, I thought it would be great to teach these tap video lessons online. I found a CMS at the time that would help me with my teaching intent. Drupal took me into the frontend libraries. PHP is a backend language, and Drupal was based entirely on PHP. There was this huge paradigm-shift within my career. I really got into these tools not knowing that it would change my career. My open source has taken me to tutorial videos. Eventually, a light bulb went off and I found a solution that needed to be solved within Angular. 12:21 – Guest.  12:28 – Chuck: I love the side hustle description: I saw a need out there and we solved it! 12:40 – Guest: Side hustle is great to talk about. Open source is a bit of a struggle (at that time) it was really hard to maintain open source and providing for your family at the same time. Open source is hard b/c you work your butt off, but you aren’t getting paid for it. It’s really, really difficult. I’ve had ups-and-downs actually with open source. You have to get innovative with it. I am really big on and supportive of people who are monetizing off of open source. 14:58 – Chuck: Open source – for me – I got burned out in June. Sometimes you are putting in a lot of time and not seeing any benefit from it. You have all of these things and something changes, something is different – I can’t take another night not seeing my kids. 16:06 – Guest: You have this original motivation as an open source developer – and you build something rally cool. You share with the world, but a lot of people don’t realize the tail of it. Come to realize it worked well for you – but not for everyone! It makes your stock price go out – contributing to open source – especially if you have a popular open source library. Most of the jobs I would apply to I would just give them my GitHub repertoire. People are figuring out ways they can support themselves and monetize. The ones that can figure that out don’t burnout. 19:44 – Chuck: Babel – Henry Zhu. I urge people to go there and help support those open source people. It’s such a great thing and it’s becoming a trend. That’s one thing that drew me away from Drupal b/c at the time it had this negative connotation of monetizing on your open source. The spirit of the open source is THAT. It gives support to open source folks in order to provide for their families. 22:00 – Chuck: I talk a lot with Eric through CodeFund. What’s In This Episode: What do you do when your team member quits? That's the topic of discussion today. Plus, Jill and Brad get the best review ever. It sucks when you do all the work to hire someone, then train them, and then they quit. Then you have to do their job in the interim, not to mention the morale dip. But there are also upsides. The biggest advantage of having people quit is that it forces you to have systems. When people quit, it's an opportunity for new ideas. Sometimes you can find someone even better. And in terms of cost, turnover gives you an opportunity to reset salaries to the market.  "You're already making your marketing easier by specializing." - Brad Zach Ventresca is an Army veteran and serial entrepreneur. He's having difficulty scaling his newest company, Command SEO, because it's a very saturated market. Brad suggests that he tailors the SEO company to serve lead generation needs of the target market of his other company, which deals with window-washing and power-washing. Once that gets going, get into other niche markets. "Write down the process you use and create a playbook for your role in this company." - Jill If you want to explore employee turnover, check out this postthat Brad was inspired by. Do you have systems for when people quit?   Guest: After a full and decorated career as a leader in the US Army, Zach Ventrescabegan a second career as an entrepreneur. Beginning with a small government contracting company and later purchasing a residential and commercial cleaning company, he entered the world of digital marketing out of his own frustration with achieving his marketing goals. Zach’s vision has brought together leaders in all aspects of digital marketing in order to provide a comprehensive solution to Command Placement’sclients. This ensures that businesses achieve their full potential even in the middle of this digital jungle, and allows business owners the freedom to focus on what they do best.

Today’s Guest After two and a half years of interviews and solo shows on this podcast, I'm super excited to introduce a new format. You may know Jo Casey from previous episodes: I interviewed her for episodes 21 and 121 (no, we didn't plan the numbering there...but I like it!), and Jo interviewed me for episodes 31 and 115. Plus, I've been on her podcast twice, first talking about social media http://www.jocasey.com/hollyworton/ and later talking about coaching http://www.jocasey.com/whp-27-combine-coaching-expertise/. So you can see that we have loads to talk about! I wanted to partner up with someone this year to do some co-hosted episodes, and we decided we'd make a great match. The idea is to have a conversation (much like my regular episodes) around a single topic each time. Today, we talk about how to find new ways forward with marketing. I'd love to hear what you think of this format! Please comment and let me know. Also, we've got a whole list of topics that we want to discuss on this show, but please drop us a note in the comments and let us know what you'd like to hear us talking about. Thanks! About Jo Casey Jo Casey is a certified life coach, trainer and coach mentor.  She’s British, slightly nerdy and allergic to the marketing bullsh*t in the coaching industry. Founder of jocasey.com, podcaster, speaker, and writer for Coaching Blueprint, Mind Body Green and Tiny Buddha.  Things that make me scream with glee: Freshly washed bed linen, watching my husband get all 'handy' around the place (DIY I mean), yellow wedge sandals, fabric stores, the sound of my kids giggling, Jesus Christ Superstar the musical. Today, we talk about how why no one tells you how hard it is in business. We delve into the messy middle that we discussed last time, and give you solid tips on how to get through it so you can build your business more easily. We started out experimenting with this new format for episode 132 and got great feedback, so we're giving it another go. Today, we talk about business visibility: how do you know when it's time to step up and be more visible with your business. This is something that we've both struggled with in the past: taking up space with our businesses and being more visible. We hope this episode will be super useful and inspiring for you! I'd love to hear what you think of this format! Please comment and let me know. Also, we've got a whole list of topics that we want to discuss on this show, but please drop us a note in the comments and let us know what you'd like to hearus talking about. Spirit Animal: Lesley Knope Why you should listen to me about coaching: I've been training, coaching and mentoring coaches for 14 years and I built my own coaching and training business after a lot of initial trial and error. I've been where you are now and I love showing coaches like you how to pull out all of the things that will make your business stand out and attract the right clients to you, without wasting a lot of time on useless and expensive shiny objects. Listen to this episode What You’ll Learn Why visibility is about taking up space and what that looks like Why you really don't need to worry about getting all up in people's faces online What our visibility journeys have been like in business, and what things have held us back Some of the things we did to turn things around in terms of business visibility What it feels like to actually show up in a bigger way (it's not what you think) The lowdown on affirmations for belief changes Is this just a woman's issue, or does it show up for men, too? What kinds of things have been the biggest triggers for our visibility stuff and how we've overcome them The biggest things we've done that have created the most important shifts in our businesses   It would make me so happy if you could take a minute and share this with other women entrepreneurs on Twitter. If you enjoy the Business Mindset Podcast, please click to tweet: [BMP159]  Jo + Holly ~ How to Step Up and Be More Visible With Your Business http://wp.me/p3507p-3y5 #podcast How to Subscribe Click here to subscribe via iTunes Click here to subscribe via RSS Click here to subscribe via Stitcher Help Spread the Word If you enjoyed this episode, please head on over to iTunes and kindly leave us a rating and a review!
