--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/parentprenor/message

As we approach the end of another year, it’s time to start thinking about business strategies and what we can do to boost our business in the new year. In today’s episode, Monica speaks with Cheryl Knowlton and Kristy Hairston about some book suggestions for building your brand, personal development, and business strategies. Both guests stress the importance of reading, and with a curated list like this, you’ll know right where to start!   Cheryl Knowlton   Cheryl loves to read! Not only physical books, but Audible is a great hack to get more books in. Both Cheryl and Monica have their book lists on their websites, and you can also check out Goodreads, a social media platform for book sharing.   The first book they discuss is Never Split the Difference, by Chris Voss. Chris was the chief hostage negotiator for the FBI, and the book focuses on different types of negotiations. In some cases, you literally can’t negotiate for half of whatever is at stake, and this book teaches you the skills to never settle for half of what you want. You can also access Chris’ material on YouTube.   Cheryl and Monica discuss the idea of a win-win situation if you never split the difference. The book provides scripts and scenarios that can help you navigate different situations. They also talk about the “black swan” as a key to negotiation, and how knowing what the black swan is can change the course of the deal.   The next book is Unfu*k Yourself, by Gary Bishop. Though the title is a bit colorful, it is a great personal development book. It helps you be intentional about the things that are hijacking your life. The companion workbook is an aid to help you work through these things and make real changes. The way to make fundamental changes is to make promises with ourselves, and hold ourselves accountable to those promises no matter what.   Think and Grow Rich for Women, by Sharon Lechter is a great book about not only how to make money, but also talks about other motivations beyond just making money. Money means different things for different people. It uses the same language and terminology as the original, and has a lot of great quotes and affirmations, especially for women.   The last two books they discuss are both from author Sally Hogshead. Fascinate is geared toward understanding branding in corporations. She took this same information and put it into How the World Sees You, which focuses more on branding for individuals. There is also a code in the back of the book for a quiz to determine your primary and secondary advantage, and how to use them.   Books allow you to connect with very powerful people without having to be physically with them. Reading can make you a better real estate professional, husband or wife, son or daughter, and all-around human being.   Kristy Hairston   Getting Everything You Can Out of All You’ve Got, by Jay Abraham has 21 ways you can outperform your competition. It focuses on mindset and looking at other industries for principles you can apply to real estate. These steps can help you form your brand around the customer experience. The book also provides tips on how you can get clear on who you are and what you’re setting up for yourself.   Kristy and Monica go in-depth about the customer experience, and how we can draw on different industries and apply those ideas to real estate, especially getting consistency in your customer experience from open houses to closing gifts.   Ninja Selling by Larry Kendall focuses on the flow Kristy referenced. Sometimes we don’t have a referral-based business because we aren’t “in flow” with them. It focuses on two types of flow, auto-flow and live-flow, and how you can continue to deliver to your current customer base. It will help you identify your “Ninja 9,” nine successful habits that are done each week.   Kristy talks about how she combines the ideas and principles of the two books mentioned to better suit her business.   The book To Sell Is Human, by Daniel Pink is a research-heavy book that breaks down the different layers of information about our careers and industries. There are case studies across several different industries that can help shift the mindset for REALTORS® in how they present themselves and their product. This book is great for people who are looking for thoughtful insight and data.   In this business, don’t forget to be uniquely you! Do that with a system and a brand for yourself.   Guest Links:   Goodreads   Cherylknows.com Workpurposefully.com   Never Split the Difference, by Chris Voss Unfu*k Yourself: Get Out of Your Head and Into Your Life, by Gary John Bishop — the book and the companion workbook Fascinate: How to Make Your Brand Impossible to Resist, by Sally Hogshead How the World Sees You: Discover Your Highest Value Through the Science of Fascination, by Sally Hogshead Think and Grow Rich for Women: Using Your Power to Create Success and Significance, by Sharon Lechter Burn the Hamster Wheel: Stress Management Strategies for Today’s Real Estate Professional, by Cheryl Knowlton   Getting Everything You Can Out of All You've Got: 21 Ways You Can Out-Think, Out-Perform, and Out-Earn the Competition, by Jay Abraham Ninja Selling: Subtle Skills. For the past 11 years, Kristy has chosen real estate as the vehicle to use those qualities to add value to family, clients and fellow REALTORS®. She is the Principal Broker at Parks Realty in Nashville. In fact, if you want to be successful, it is important to find your own marketing voice and design a method that works with your introversion rather than against it. The ‘get known’ method of constant networking and speaking on stages isn’t for everyone, and there are countless other ways to attract clients that don’t involve collecting business cards or making hundreds of phone calls. Thank goodness! After the birth of her third child in 2012, Michelle Evans walked away from a position in global marketing strategy at Microsoft to start her own marketing consultancy. Today, she focuses on helping entrepreneurs go from ‘simply surviving to predictably SOLD OUT’ by way of marketing funnels and Facebook ads. Michelle also serves as the host of the Marketing Funnel Show podcast. On this episode of Introvert Biz Growth, Michelle shares the story of getting involved in the wrong mastermind and trying to fit the mold of the extroverted marketer. The incredible Sally Hogshead has done it all. She’s a branding expert who founded her own ad agency in her 20s and has worked with prestigious companies like Nike, Godiva, and MINI Cooper. She’s also the author of two New York Times bestselling books, Fascinate and How the World Sees You. In this conversation, it becomes very clear that she also has a deep, nuanced understanding of human nature and communication. She explores how your personality and goals should shape the message you share with the world, and how having all these things in alignment offers the potential for a more powerful message. This conversation previously aired as episode 44 on my other podcast, The Optimized Geek, but it’s so great I had to share it with my Marketing Speak listeners too! With that said, though, I suggest checking out The Optimized Geek if you aren’t already a regular listener. You’ll learn many tips, strategies, and methods to transform your life, body, and health. Find Out More About Sally Here: @SallyHogshead on TwitterHogshead on Facebookhowtofascinate.com In This Episode: [04:06] - Sally starts off by emphasizing the importance of making sure we have the same understanding of words. She then shares her definition of the word “brand” and gives a couple of examples. These days, she says, everything we do is either adding value to or damaging our brand. [07:31] - Next, Sally gives us a look “inside the golden hallways of a high-end ad agency” by discussing the example of MINI Cooper. She then discusses how this relates to smaller companies, entrepreneurs, and solopreneurs. [10:04] - We learn what the term “anthem” means in advertising through several examples. [11:23] - Stephan shares his own example of an anthem. [14:19] - Sally takes a moment to rave about the experience of helping brands find the right words to describe themselves. She then explains that all communication can be put into seven different categories and gives some insight into how this applies to brands. [17:58] - Stephan offers LifeLock as an example of an alert brand. Sally agrees with his assessment, and elaborates on it. She then explains that  these seven categories apply to people too, with each of us having a primary advantage. [21:35] - Does Sally have any processes or tips for stepping into our best selves? She starts her answer by offering an example of needing to balance a trust company with an innovation message. She then offers three recommendations. [27:28] - In response to Sally’s client “Mountain Dew” anecdote, Stephan shares a story of his own on connecting with a client whose internal and external messages were incongruent. [29:47] - Sally talks about the terms “quicksand” and “wellspring.” A wellspring is a situation that allows you to fully apply your natural advantages. For Sally, that’s sitting down and writing headlines or short-form copy. Quicksand, on the other hand, is something that takes a disproportionate amount of energy and doesn’t allow you to show up at your best. [32:37] - Sally applies these concepts to a completely different type of personality: Dan Kennedy. His wellspring is being able to sit and think through concepts intensely. His quicksand is emotional connection in which he has to fake interest or hug strangers. Jay Abraham’s wellspring is coming up with nonlinear ideas very rapidly. His quicksand is micromanaging his own thinking and following a formalized script, or going through details in a way that doesn’t allow creative freedom. [34:23] - Stephan takes a moment to talk about flow and being in a flow state. He then shares his own wellspring and strengths. His quicksand, he reveals, lies in details. He then discusses the finite nature of willpower. [39:05] - This time, Sally asks Stephan a question: when we’re working on something that requires a tremendous amount of willpower, does that lead to unhealthy behaviors? They discuss willpower, the allocation of time, and abstinence versus moderation. [43:43] - We hear Sally’s thoughts about hiring people based on their wellspring and quicksand. She recommends having people take the Fascination Advantage Assessment (free to Marketing Speak listeners with the code “GEEK”), then gives examples of how to use this when managing people. [47:56] - Is Sally a speaker who writes or a writer who speaks? Her answer reveals that you aren’t necessarily wired one way or the other, but something that can change depending on our experiences and what we practice. [50:38] - Sally shares another perspective on this question, framing it in a more conceptual way. [52:41] - Stephan explains how to get Sally’s free gift (howtofascinate.com/you code: geek) [53:17] - We learn more about the Fascination Advantage Assessment, which takes about three minutes and tells you about how the world sees you at your best. [55:21] - Sally has two training programs: one for personal brands and one for businesses. She talks more about the programs she offers. Her Fascination Business System is for people who don’t have the budget to hire an agency, but understand the need to differentiate themselves. [57:12] - To wrap things up, Sally shares a final parting thought: the world isn’t changed by people who sort of care. You have to passionately care and find something that fascinates you and allows you to become fascinating. Jane has been endorsed by LinkedIn as one of the top influences in Australia and New Zealand; she is also the author of 3 books including Connect: How to Leverage Your LinkedIn Profile for Business Growth and Lead Generation in Less Than 7 Minutes per Day.   Questions Tell us a little bit about yourself and your journey How do you feel about customer service/ customer experience on a global level? From your book, what are some of the top things that will help business owners to grow their business, to leverage and understand their business and how customer service can help their business and get more leads and more customers and will they see results? Yanique indicated that se read Jane’s website that Jane believes people should really be optimizing on their personal brand because people buy you. How do you stay motivated every day? What is the one online resource, website, tool or app that you absolutely cannot live without in your business? What are some of the books that have had the biggest impact on you? What is one thing in your life right now that you are really excited about – something that you are working on to develop yourself or people? Where can our listeners find your information online? What is one quote or saying that you live by or that inspires you in times of adversity?   Highlights Jane Anderson state that when she was growing up something that she has always been interesting in was the world of business but while she was in high school, her very first job was in retail and she worked for a company called Mavis Shoes in Australia and Mavis Shoes is a family type shoes store and they have branches all over Australia. She started working for the Mavis Shoes brand when was she was 14 years old but the keeping was that the Mavis family owned the Mavis brand and it was a big iconic family in Australia and they sold the company and moved on. She started in retail and remembered how the experience was with customers and how she was allowed to have a customer by herself for the first month. They had to have somebody with them the whole time, the standards of training was high but it lead her down the path of really starting to become interesting in personally branding businesses so the Mavis name is still known in Australia, they are 3rd and 4th generation retailers and she has since gone on to work with other industries like State Government, Roads and Transport but she kept coming back to retail, she spent about 15 years in retail, she was a manager. She did a marketing degree but have always loved customers, she loves being able to make them happy but she worked with the Mavis family for 12 years and one of the things she found while working with them is that what drew people to the business was because everybody had a story about the family, everybody knew something about them or they knew the daughters and what she notice was that the family had a strong reputation in the community and they were very well respected and her job was to make sure that their values of customer service that she adapted those and did things in the same way as if they were in the store, she went on to be a area manager for them. She then went on to work for a super retail group, Supercheap Auto in Australia, it is the fastest growing retail companies, they have just over 10,000 staff and she was the Learning and Development Officer for them. She always knew she would go out on her own, it’s something she has always been committed to is customer service. She grew up in a place called Lismore in Australia, which is laid back, she moved to the city when she finished University because she just wanted the jobs there and she has gone on to doing other things. Jane Andersons stated that on a global level from what she see and talking clients is that she thinks there’s not one way to do things anymore, there are so many channels the way you access customers and particular now, what’s the digital platform that matches the face to face customer experience. She stated that she was talking to someone the other day and they said, “the only reason why I on Twitter is make a customer service complaint because if I can’t the answers, they’ll soon answer me if I’m on Twitter”, so the customer service experience she thinks is a lot more transparent than it use to be in the past. If somebody has a bad experience, it’s not that hard for us to go and find out, people make comments on Facebook pages and Twitter, so the digital foot print as part of your customer experience in your business is something she thinks people don’t always think is much. She stated that the other thing is about evolving and changing, so if you look at the retail industry, something that they have noticed in Australia and it’s been in the media, is that retail businesses are being extraordinary slow to adapt online shopping as part of their experience, so a lot of Australian shoppers have shopped overseas online because the can get it cheaper and so Australian retailers suffer because they are not offering the customer experience that people want, so people will shop overseas. Those 2 things, the impact of digital social media, businesses evolving and changing fast enough because it’s the ones that edge all, who can move quickly if they look at thing like Instagram or what people are able to sell and create the customer experience and integrate that, it’s just not walking pass the shop front anymore. Jane stated that the challenge is that the customer is driving the direction of the experience, not the businesses and it depends on the kind of business you are in but she thinks that 1 of the challenge is being able to know when to listen to customers and when not to, she always thinks of that Henry Ford quote, “If I had asked my customers what they wanted, they would have said a faster horse.” Sometimes it’s that balance, it’s not necessarily playing with the popularity contest. They’ll say, I need you to look at what’s trending and stop marketing around what customers or what people are talking about and what’s trending but the problem with that is that you’re just diluting your business because you’re focusing on what people are talking about what they want but sometimes it’s about being comfortable that what you’re talking about is actually about what people need and you have to be comfortable that you might not be popular, you might not be everybody’s favorite but if you’re following what everybody is interested in, you become commoditize, so you have to be very careful that you can still stand out even if customers are wanting it and everyone’s following what customers want. Sometime you have to actually go in the opposite direction. Jane stated that when she first started her business, she is a sole entrepreneur and have a team of 1 staff member full-time and rest of her team are contractors but one of the things when she first started and she left corporate business life was that she had some money saved and she thought she was going to go out and start her business and the first year she lost about $30,000.00 in google advertisments and search engines optimization and it wasn’t that anything was wrong with those products, they are fantastic but she spent it on the wrong person and she was a little naïve and this person said that they were an expert but she might have well just given the money away. When that happened she had a choice, she had either go back to job or she had to find a way to make it work with zero budget, so it forced her to start to learn about LinkedIn a little more, it’s free and she can go and start reaching out to people and contacting them and that was in 2009. At the time she was also writing profiles for her clients, so they were getting jobs, and branding people and what happened was that she used LinkedIn to help grow her business and that was how, she learnt from someone in the United States of America about how the algorithms work. She is also productivity. The book was written for people who are time poor, who just really need it to work for them when they need it to, when they are trying to grow their business and what are the activities they need to work on that will get the growth. There are thought leaders, experts in their fields she has worked with and she generally says, “you can get your turn over up to the $300,000.00 mark just purely through LinkedIn before you start your website.” She stated that LinkedIn is extraordinary powerful and what it did for her at a time when she had no money and she had to try and work out how to grow her business, it puts you in the drivers’ seat as to hoping that you will get an enquiry on your website. Jane stated that a client who is a sole entrepreneur, her name is Rachael Burke who lives in Australia and is a Sales Expert and she came to her and said, “I’m not really good at lead generation but I’m really good at selling, so I just need more customers.” So what she did with her was to show her the formula and how to get it to work and she increased her sales by over 66% in 3 months, so that’s in the hundred of thousands of dollars. She does LinkedIn for lead generation for large organizations as well as small ones and sole entrepreneurs. Jane stated that in Australia, they have a business which is a big superannuation and superannuation in Australia is like money you put away for your retirement and they built all the LinkedIn profiles for the staff and for the financial planners for the business and what she got them to do was, they have a change of legistration in Australia so it was a great time to educate the market on some of the changes because nobody was educating the market, she was out looking. She said to them that they need to run webinar, they need to got out and educate some of these clients and they got 500 new leads from that webinar. That was purely through leveraging the profiles and that was about 50 staff that got their profiles built. The opportunities that are in there but the thing is with LinkedIn is that, she find most people will come to her and say, “I’ve got a LinkedIn account but I have never achieve any results from it.” and then she’ll ask them what their profile say, there are often be no content in it at all or she’ll ask them how often they have reached out to people? What have you said to them? What have you invited them to? What’s your content plan? And they don’t have any of that, so LinkedIn doesn’t make clients magically appear, you have to go out and find them but you’ve got to have really good collateral and they make a decision about you in 3 seconds. You have to make sure that all your collateral and profile is so nice and polished and sharp and that it matches how amazing you are in person because we only have 3 seconds for them to go “wow, this person knows what they are doing, this person is amazing, I have to talk to you.” To have a profile that really works, like making sure it turns up in search results as well as having that impact when they see you. For just a simple 3 seconds, that’s how long they look at it before they move on and have a look at somebody else, so they have to make sure that they make their job really easy. Jane stated that people need to shift their attention now onto the other person, so you’re looking for what’s the common ground or what the purpose because the other person is asking themselves “why are you offering to connect with me?” so you’ve got to be able to answer the “why”, so if you’re reaching out and for example, she was reaching out medical financial planner, if he just looked at her profile and say, “why is she offering to connect with me, I don’t understand.” She explained to him that she does a lot of work with doctors, she helps them with lead generation but she helps them who are going into specialist training programs and she said to him, “I would love to catch up with you, I think there’s an opportunity for me to perhaps add some value to your clients, if not, that’s totally fine but here are some links, you are welcome to check out what I do and I would love to catch up with you for coffee one day and see what I can do to help you as well.” And so he met with her, so it all started from there and you’ve got to focus, look at their profile, what is it that they do and you have to address, “I notice this on your profile or I notice that you do this type of work, I notice that you’re in the same industry, I do this type of work or I help people like you in this space, so I thought I’d connect.” Jane stated that what happens is that just because you are ready to sell, doesn’t mean that the customer is ready to buy. So when you reach out to people, people have got to get to know you so they are going, “hold on, I haven’t even met you” and it’s a little like dating. She recalled she went on a date with a guy once and he turned up with a bag pack and she said to him, “have you just coming from the gym?” and he said, “No, you never know, things might go alright” and she thought he was joking and he opened his bag and there was a tooth brush, he had a change of clothes, his undies. She stated that LinkedIn is a little like that, is that sometimes we turn up with a bag pack, we’re ready to move in together, start this relationship and go in whole but the customer is saying, “hold on, can we just have coffee first, who are you?” So we sort of scare people and that’s when you hear people say they just get harass by sales people. You have to connect, be liked, friendly but then you’ve got to let people get to know you through your content, Mark Port who wrote the book, Book Yourself Solid said, “you have got to earn the right to sell.” And the problem is that most people don’t earn the right and then they scare people away. You can then ask for the value, you can ask for what you want based on the value you delivered. So in other words, if you have given enough, you have done enough content, if you kept visible enough, if you build enough trust, now you’re ready to go and ask for what you want. One of the things she does with clients is that she will look at how much value they have given to their audience because what they do is done nothing, they have given no value and they will say to her, “I want to be able to grow my business on LinkedIn but it’s not working.” But are not giving their audience any value, so you can’t go and ask for what you want because you haven’t earn it yet. You can do that in less then 7 minutes a day. Jane shared her concept of people buying you, her experience working with this family from she was 14 years old, people’s connections were so intertwined. Jane shared back then the only way people really knew who you were was if you were on TV or something or if you are in the newspaper. Now, Social Media has heavily leveled the playing field so if you leverage your name and identify your Unique Selling Proposition (USP) that you bring to your customer. Jane says thought leaders will at times come to her and say there is so much content out there already about for example productivity and Jane believes there is only one of you and so people deserve to hear your unique views on the subject – your experiences, your voice, you lens, your interpretation and your insights. Your Social Media profile, particularly something like Linked In offers great opportunities for a small business owner or soloproneur that is leveraging their own brand – you own your own profile, you can add agility, personality and so much more which is a threat to larger companies. Jane shared how she stays motivated every single day – Jane thinks it is important to be really clear about your purpose and what you want. Jane shared she thinks that motivation really hits you when you have a choice at 2:00 am in the morning and you have the choice of going to bed or finishing that last bit of work because you really want to do it and get it done. Jane says she believes that it is in those moments that your motivation will either work for you or against you and it is in those moments that purpose is really important. Jane says some other factors that really keeps her motivated is that she is very particular about the people that she works with – she chooses to work with thought leaders and experts in their fields as they inspire her. She further stated that if they bring the best to her and inspire her then she can bring the best to others and inspire them. Jane also shared that it is important to find a group that you can belong to that are similar to you such as an industry association etc. and then Jane said there is also the basics such as eating well, get enough sleep as these activities help to make you more productive and efficient. Jane shared the one website, online tool or app that she absolutely cannot live without in her business is LinkedIn as a Social Media platform but the one app she cannot live without is actually an app that she created. Jane spent some time as a Productivity Consultant working with some real large corporations, she did a lot of work helping CEO’s and EA’s how to work really well together and what she found working with the two set of persons was the speed of communication between going to meetings and being on the run. Jane said she was looking an Concur, which is an IT company that looks at the on-the-go economy and how there is this shift to doing things on the go. Jane said the app she has created is called “Memo-Mailer” and it can be accessed at memomailer.com and it is available on iTunes. Jane stated the way that it works is holding down the button in the app – say what you have to say and then the app will email the memo to your Inbox. Jane said sometimes ideas come along at really inconvenient times and this tool really captures those things. Jane stated that she built the app with her colleague Dermot Crowley, who is an expert in Productivity and he has written the book Smart Work, which was recently released and hit Best Seller in Australia. Jane said that’s the app she definitely cannot live without. Jane shared some books that have had the biggest impact on her Sew Your Thoughts by Matt Church, he has spent the last 30 years helping people who are experts in their fields commercialize their ideas. She also mentioned Book Yourself Solid by Michael Port, which is a New York Times Best Seller and Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey. Jane mentioned another book she really believes is great is How the World Sees You by Sally Hogshead, she has created a diagnostic testing that helps people identify what makes them fascinating. Jane also mentioned Seth Godin’s Linchpin as a great book too. Jane gave us an additional nugget through the book – Mindset: The New Psychology of Success by Carol Dweck – another “must read!” Jane shared the one thing that is going on in her life right now that she is really excited about is a piece of work that she is working on to further develop her Linked In engagements with clients which will be called the Lead Generation Indicator. The tool is specifically designed for people who are experts in their field and will help clients identify 12 activities that will grow your business even if it is from scratch with absolutely no clients. A complete package for business owners. Kay stated that listeners can find him on: Jane Anderson LinkedIn Jane Anderson Facebook Jane Anderson Instagram Jane Anderson Twitter Jane Anderson SnapChat Jane Anderson Periscope Jane Anderson Website Jane shared a quote that she has on her wall and sees all the time during times of adversity – “If you are going through hell, keep going.” Winston Churchill ***Jane says she feels that this is a quote that she believes is in the trenches with her when she needs to hear something real and authentic.   Links Book Yourself Solid by Michael Port Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey How the World Sees You by Sally Hogshead Seth Godin’s Linchpin Mindset: The New Psychology of Success by Carol Dweck

Today we’re going to talk about how to take that “thing” that you’ve had forever and actually create an asset without doing a whole lot of extra stuff.  We’re talking about that YouTube channel that’s been sitting on the back burner, that’s kind of collecting dust, and right now, it could be collecting more leads and more sales. For me, personally, I use YouTube to drive sales, to build a list, and to really get great results.  This is something that I’ve been doing since 2007, and I’ve been doing it just kind of matter-of-factly.  I’ve seen these results.  I’ve seen traffic to my website. I’ve seen sales, and I thought, “How can we improve upon that?”  Really, what I have studied in the past 8 months is really all around that. The promise is: [bctt tweet="How to take your YouTube channel, drive more traffic to it and convert the traffic into leads/sales " username="danielhall"]And ultimately create an asset that is valuable and important to your business. One of the great things about YouTube videos is that you can put them up and people can access them, so you have this ability to cast a wider net.  You can reach out and connect with people who have never  otherwise heard of you. Download the Complete PDF Show Notes Free for this Episode Not only can people access the information, not only can you provide a huge, valuable resource for other people, but other people that don’t have any idea who you are can find those videos.  Right now, if you were to search for “Apple Branding,” my video ranks #1, and then, all of the other videos on Page 1, the first 10, they’re two years old, they’re three years old, and I think, like, the sixth video is 10 years old. Imagine really having the foresight to build a channel out.  Not just to think, “Hey, YouTube is where I stick my videos.  That’s my video hosting,” but to build a channel, and to be able to drive views that can bring people on your list, or to sell products, or to really gain that exposure and authority.  To me, that was one of the reasons why I wanted to dive in.  I couldn’t think of any other platform that would allow me to drive traffic year after year, like YouTube can and does. All right, all right, all right. Today I've got a sweet story for you guys. I was, so it's Monday right, and I was coming out of church and yesterday I was in church and this guy and I just got in this conversation. I've seen him before. I've haven't really talked to him that much though. Great guy. I was sitting there and actually we were walking out and our little kids were running around screaming like crazy right and he goes, "You're in the Army right?" I said, "Yes". He goes, "I don't know if I should publicly say that but I just did so." He goes, "Man, like is that cool and stuff?" I was like, "Just like anything there's pros and cons you know. There's really fun times and there's really boring times." He goes, "You do marketing stuff right?" I said, "Yeah, yeah, yeah." He goes, "So what do you do?" I start telling him. I go, "Hey, I build sales funnels and I do this and this and this." He was like, "This is really really interesting." I could tell like something was bothering him. He looked over and I asked, him, "What do you do for work? You do like supply chain management stuff?" He was like, "Yeah, yeah, yeah." I was like, "I almost did that in college but like you guys are crazy smart. Like you guys have so much" ... I remember my supply chain classes that I took being up all night making these ridiculously huge Excel models. They were cool but man it was rough. It was super super rough to do that stuff. My brain ... I wasn't cut out for it. I got bored really quick. He goes, "That's just the thing man. Like I'm so, I don't know, I can't say what it is." I was like, "Are you just really really bored?" He goes, "Yeah". He goes, "I'm so bored. I hate my job. I hate what I do. I don't ..." He got animated. It was the first time I'd seen him kind of open up. He and I have spoken before but you know small talk. We're not really friends or whatever. It's not that we're not but we just haven't done anything. Anyways he starts opening up to me. He's telling me how bored he is with his life. He said, "The only think that I like about my job is the fact that it provides for my family. I like that. I hate going to work though. I hate doing what I do." He looked at me and goes, "You are so lucky." I felt like, I mean I didn't know how to react to that because yes, I am. He was like, "You wake up every single day and you're excited to go to work." I was like freaking yes man. It's not even seven o'clock in the morning right now and I'm all ready at the office. I get up early to just crush it because you guys know that I have a normal job on the side so I do this in the mornings and I build sales funnels in weird times of the day so that I can keep moving towards my dreams and make extra money and it works. I make a lot of extra money with this. He looks at me and he's like, "You're so lucky man." He's like, "And you're in the Army. How's that? Is that super fun?" It's just like, it's exactly what I said before man, it's like, there's really good times and there's really boring times. Anyways, there's a book by Tim Ferriss. I'm sure you guys have all heard it, The 4-Hour Workweek. In that book, the first time I read it, I thought this was kind of a weird comment that Tim Ferriss said in there and Tim Ferriss, I remember he said, "The real thing that we're fighting in this life is boredom." I thought, I don't know if I really agree with that. I don't know. I wish I could remember the rest of the quote. I should have looked it up before I started recording. He said, "The real thing we're fighting in this life is boredom. We should do things because it excites us and that's the only reason." I started thinking about why I am where I am and that actually is one hundred percent spot on true that I started learning how to drive traffic because I thought it was really freaking cool and I could send traffic over to tons of different sites and make money. I remember the first time that I made money online. I went to sleep. My buddy and I was working on stuff and I had just convinced my internet marketing teacher to not let me, I said, "Hey, please don't let me come back, I don't want to go back to class. I've all ready been studying this stuff for awhile. You guys are talking about the basics and it's killing me." I said, "No offense but can I go do this instead right?" I drew up a plan and it was just a sales funnel. I had an opt in page, an order from, there was an up sale and something else. It was for affiliate products right? I said, "This is what I want to go build and I wasn't to do this instead of your class." I can't believe he let me do it but I thank God every day that he said yes because he very well could have just changed my life right there, which he probably did because it worked. I went out and I built it and I remember that night I was like, "Gosh, I hope this work." I sent traffic to it. I spent fifty bucks which to me was a huge amount of money. Fifty dollars in traffic and I went to sleep and I woke up the next day and immediately pulled up my computer and I was looking at it. I was like, "Holy Crap!" There was fifty dollars back in my account. I broke even. There were seventeen people who had seen it and had opted in but didn't purchase so I gained seventeen contacts and fifty dollars. I was like, "This is crazy. Oh my gosh." I was a little bit disheartened because I didn't make money right? All I got was contacts. I didn't understand how cool it was and what I had just pulled off the very first time that I had tried it. We call that a self-liquidating offer. I had made no money but had gained customers, so my cost to acquire a customer was zero which to any VC firm or whatever, is nuts. I went through and I could re-market to those people and I could make more money with them. Anyways, I was going nuts. I got super excited and I started going and driving traffic for Paul Mitchell that was local there and got introduced to eight more Paul Mitchell's through California. My buddy and I started building websites for some of their upcoming celebrities who were being on TV. I did it because it was exciting. I was fighting boredom and my brain works at a billion miles an hour. You guys can probably hear it. Sometimes I talk super fast but I just, I was fighting boredom. That's what you should do. Go fight boredom. That's the real enemy is boredom. Gosh, I hate going to ... The reason I love my job so much, my normal job, is because it's different every day. I do a different thing every single day. It's the reason I chose marketing. I remember I was talking to a professor and a teacher. I know I talk about college a lot but there were some things I really liked about college and things I hated and I'm not necessarily that old. I'm only twenty-eight. For me college was not that long ago and so there's always lessons I still did learn from college. I'm glad I went and I'm glad I did it. There was a teacher that I sat down with and I was like, "Look, I don't know what I want to do. I can see myself being in finance. My brain can handle that stuff a little bit. I can see myself being in supply chain. That stuff's really interesting to me too. Marketing is interesting but it seems like the one that I would actually like the least." I can't believe I said that, which is very funny. He's like, "You're built for marketing." I said, "What? Aren't they like a dime a dozen?" He said, "Well yes, but you don't need to be." I was like, "There's no tangible skill that comes with marketing though." You don't study marketing and come out and go, this is x, y, z like engineers who say, "Hey, I can make you a blueprint. We'll get it going over to an architect and then you've got a building." Marketing people don't do that stuff. I said, "What do you guys do?" He's like, "The reason I think you're going to like it is because there's literally a different problem every single day." He was the chief marketing officer of Denny's for a long time and Little Caesar's. He's actually the guy that invented cheese crust. You know the cheese filled crust. He thought about that and he was like, "Hey, let's just try it out." He told me that for a long time there's not string cheese in any stores in America because he kept telling all the managers to go buy it up because they exploded their projections. People wanted cheese filled crust. Anyways, random story. Anyways, he told me that in marketing you get to go solve a new problem every day. My problem right now is I'm trying to find a good Blogger. I don't like writing but there's some articles that I need written all right. I'm going to go solve that problem. Another problem I'm having right now is I want to go find one more awesome sales guy that I can manage all my other sales guys with and pay more than the others. That's a problem I'm trying to solve right now. It's fun because I can go out and okay, how am I going to get new blood into my business. How am I going to sell more sales funnels. How am I going to get more people to try ClickFunnels because I absolutely love it and I do get a little bit of commission with it. That's my business model and that's how I make money. How am I going to that? I get to think of all all these cool problems and come up with all these cool strategies and really the number one thing to fight in this life is boredom when it comes to professionally. Boredom. Don't be bored. If you're bored at your job go quite it. I'm serious. Go, maybe not right off the bat. But seriously go get a book that has a really interesting title. If you want to go make money in a different way then start. Holy crap, start. Life's too short to do stuff you freaking hate. The guy yesterday I was talking to was saying, "Hey, you're super lucky and I just hate my job." I said, "Well there's some books I'll give to you if you want that really have pushed me forward. The books that have really made the huge difference in my life." He's like, "Well yeah, that sounds awesome, let's do that." I was like, "Yes, let me show you what I do and let's see if we can kind of save you man because that sucks." I can't remember the name of the book. I'm looking at the bookshelf here. Gosh, I can't remember the name of it. You know, anyways, one of the major lessons. It's on the back of the cover. It says ... Oh, it's a book called, How the World Sees You, Seven Reasons to Discover How the World Sees You. I just want to read these real quick. The first one is, the world's not changed by people who sort of care. The world is not changed by people who sort of care. You kind of have to really care. I've talked about that in a previously podcast, how you have to be purposeful. Number two, you don't learn how to be fascinating, you unlearn boring. Number three, instead of focusing on strengths, highlight your differences. That alone has made me really stand out. There's some things I really suck at. I just would hate to be an account. I would hate to be a lawyer. There's people who love it so that's great and I'm going to hire them out. Just because I can do something doesn't mean I should. I should do the thing that distinguishes me the most, which is building. I'm actually quite a good funnel builder. Until I realized that I kind of stayed in the back scenes. Number four, every time you communicate you're either adding value or taking up space. I hope that you guys think I'm adding value. I'm trying to give you guys cool nuggets and get you motivated to do stuff. Number five, to become more successful don't change who you are, become more of who you are. Number six, if you don't know your value, don't expect others to know it, which is true. I charge ten grand for my sales funnels. Those are the ones I kind of pre-built for a certain industry. I charge fifteen grand for custom funnels. Until I actually said that for people, I actually worked for free for a long time, which is good. You should go work for free for awhile. Get results, get testimonials, if you're just starting out. If you don't actually come out and say, "Hey, this is how much this is going to be", before you start building, before you start doing whatever it is you're going to go do. I don't care if you're not building sales funnels but whatever it is you're going to go do, then people aren't going to, they're not going to pay you any money. Number seven, the greatest value you can add is to become more of yourself, which I kind of all ready said that. This is kind of six things. The biggest one I wanted to say is that you need to unlearn boring in your own life, not just in your marketing, and then just because someone says, like working nine to five is awesome but it doesn't always take me eight hours to get my tasks done for the day. Go do something else. Work on something on the side. Instead of focusing on your strengths, highlight your differences. That's like Marketing 101 right there as far as personal branding. Anyways, I'm kind of ranting now again but I just want you guys to know that the thing you need to be doing is like I said, unlearning boring. Fight boring. You can't, number one you can't be boring in your business but number two, you can't do boring over and over again in your life and expect to maintain potency. You can't. Don't be like that guy that I talked to yesterday. If you hate your job, man, start making moves to quit it. Figure out what you do like. If you need help, here's a trick. What do you think about when you don't need to be thinking about anything? That's one of the reasons I chose business. That's one of the reasons I chose building stuff. Because I started thinking, holy crap, every time I have nothing to be thinking about, meaning I don't need to be doing homework, I didn't need to be working for a client that I had during college, I was away from home so I wasn't talking to my wife or anything, I wasn't around other people. The things I would think about was always business related. I was always thinking, "Oh, how could I sell that. How could I do this. How could I do this. Wow, this was a great idea." I fell into that wow, it's a great idea trap for awhile but when I actually started putting things into action, anyways, it was really, anyways. Go out and don't, just don't be boring. Just go figure out what it is you want to go do. Figure out what excites you. Think through, what do I think about when I don't need to be thinking about anything. The answer to that it is usually what is really going to excite you. Just follow that trail for a little bit and you'll probably find the answer. Anyways guys, I want to thank you guys for listening in. As always please go to salesfunnelbroker.com, download some of the free funnels if you don't know where to get started and just tinker with them. You do need to ClickFunnels account but that comes with a free trial when you download that link. If you have any questions go to the HeySteve page there and you can record right off the browser page of recording to me and it will email that voice recording to me. I kind of vent the questions and if the question pops up on the show, then I will go ahead and send you guys a HeySteve t-shirt. It's a sweet t-shirt. I'll go through another podcast episode on how I made those t-shirts without really needing to. How I made them not on my own. Anyways guys, I'll talk to you later and please let me know what you think about this. All right guys, see you.

Today’s Guest After two and a half years of interviews and solo shows on this podcast, I'm super excited to introduce a new format. You may know Jo Casey from previous episodes: I interviewed her for episodes 21 and 121 (no, we didn't plan the numbering there...but I like it!), and Jo interviewed me for episodes 31 and 115. Plus, I've been on her podcast twice, first talking about social media http://www.jocasey.com/hollyworton/ and later talking about coaching http://www.jocasey.com/whp-27-combine-coaching-expertise/. So you can see that we have loads to talk about! I wanted to partner up with someone this year to do some co-hosted episodes, and we decided we'd make a great match. The idea is to have a conversation (much like my regular episodes) around a single topic each time. We started out experimenting with this new format for episode 132 and got great feedback, so we're giving it another go. Today, we talk about our top ten business books that have changed our lives and businesses. We discuss at which point in our business we discovered these books, and how they helped us. We also share whether each title is best in paperback format (so you can use it as a reference to take notes and come back to it again and again) or if you can get it as an ebook for ease of reading and carrying around. I'd love to hear what you think of this new format! Please comment and let me know. Also, we've got a whole list of topics that we want to discuss on this show, but please drop us a note in the comments and let us know what you'd like to hear us talking about. Thanks! About Jo Casey Jo Casey is a certified life coach, trainer and coach mentor.  She’s British, slightly nerdy and allergic to the marketing bullsh*t in the coaching industry. For anyone in a distracted and competitive environment, the real issue is not how you see the world. The real question is… how does the world see you?   My dear friend Sally Hogshead is our guest on today’s episode, and Sally created the Fascination Advantage®, the first personality assessment that measures how others perceive you! After researching over 600,000 people, her algorithm can pinpoint your most valuable differentiating traits. Unlike Myers-Briggs or StrengthsFinder, this test doesn't measure how you see the world – but How the World Sees You. Her recent book, HOW THE WORLD SEES YOU, was a #1 Wall Street Journal bestseller! Working with companies such as Nike, Aflac, Godiva, Jägermeister, Avon, and the Wall Street Journal, Sally creates and leads global marketing campaigns, and also teaches companies how to use their brand personality to fascinate in social media and customer experience. Today, Sally teaches us how to instantly persuade and captivate in a world with a 9 second attention span, using your own unique competitive advantages – including how to captivate customers and close the sale. As the only speaker and author on the topic of fascination, Sally has developed a scientifically-based system of influence, based on the brain's hardwired patterns. This is for any goal that requires powerful communication— from selling insurance to motivating employees. Take a listen and give us a review if you like what you hear!

If you haven't seen your friends douse themselves in ice to support ALS research yet, you're probably living under a rock. The ALS Ice Bucket challenge has raised over $13.3 million (compared to $1.7 million last year) and has over 260,000 new donors. Why is the ice bucket challenge so effective? 2 reasons:1) It plays on the power of video, which is much more visceral and experiential than text or photo could ever be.2) It happened concurrently with the new Facebook update that now allows videos to autoplay in your news feed. The other important reason this challenge has succeeded is that it wasn't ALS who asked people to dump ice on their heads, it's friends. And while we may not all have a personal connection to ALS, we do have personal connections to our colleagues and friends so we want to support the cause in their honor. This is a lesson that all businesses, not just non-profits can learn from: Social media is about people, not logos, and it's the individual connectivity that makes campaigns successful.SUBSCRIBE: https://www.youtube.com/jaybaer00SPROUT SOCIAL SHOUT OUTToday's Sprout Social shout out is a three-part challenge to Sally Hogshead (http://twitter.com/sallyhogshead), author of the new book, How the World Sees You (http://www.amazon.com/How-World-Sees-... Rory Vaden (http://twitter.com/rory_vaden), best-selling author of Take the Stairs (http://www.southwesternconsulting.com... and Jess Ostroff (http://twitter.com/jessostroff), Managing Editor at Convince & Convert and Director of Calm at Don't Panic Management (http://dontpanicmgmt.com). You have 24 hours to complete the ice bucket challenge and/or donate $100 to ALS research!OUR SPONSORSCandidio (http://candidio.com), a simple and affordable video production company.
