In 2010, Johnny Solomon's band, Communist Daughter, was on the rise. But behind the scenes, Johnny was struggling—he was drinking heavily, and abusing meth to the tune of $600 a week. "People see it from the outside, but it's impossible to explain from the inside of what it does to your soul," he told me about his addiction. "I did really terrible things to the people I loved." When Johnny realized it was time to get help, he called one of the people he loved most—his mom, Nancy. She paid for him to go to rehab, which helped him get clean and gave him a diagnosis of bipolar disorder.  After Johnny got sober and went on medication, his band regrouped and continued touring and putting out albums. But then, a few years later, it was Nancy who needed help, as her health declined due to a degenerative nerve disease. So Johnny and his wife—and bandmate—Molly packed up their life in Minnesota and moved in with Nancy and her husband in San Diego. It's a very different life from the one they were imagining at this point in their marriage, when they were hoping to start a family. And caring for Nancy has meant that their music careers have been put mostly on hold. But Johnny says there are aspects of the change that feel healthy, especially given the difficulties he experienced trying to stay sober in a touring musician's lifestyle. "I love routine," he told me. "I love it, because when things get out of control then I start to really lose control." I went to their shared home to talk with Johnny, Molly and Nancy about what their life together looks like now—and what's been hard about building it. This episode first aired in 2018. What a Creep: Johnny Carson “King of Late Night Creep” Season 10, Episode 2 Johnny Carson was known as the King of Late Night with NBC’s The Tonight Show which he hosted between 1962-1992. He was so popular that the phrase “going to bed with Johnny Carson” was part of the vernacular. In his lifetime, he won 6 Emmy Awards, the Peabody Award in 1985, The Presidential Freedom Award in 1992, and the Kennedy Center Honor in 1993. When Johnny retired from show business on May 22, 1992, it was such a big media news story that some outlets refused to run new episodes so that he could have as large of an audience as possible. The Tonight Show was considered key in the careers of comedians like Joan Rivers, David Letterman, Jay Leno, Roseanne Barr, Ellen DeGeneres, and Jay Leno. Having a set on the Tonight Show was considered quite the coup—but it was even better when Johnny invited you to the couch afterward. People like Drew Carey, Tim Allen, and Ray Romano had television deals after appearing on the Tonight Show. He had power! He was flirtatious with women (a habit David Letterman picked up from him) and a famous story from the 1960s had actress Ava Gabor as a guest who brought her Persian cat sitting on her lap. She supposedly asked Johnny “Would you like to pet my pussy?” Johnny said, “Sure if you move that damn cat out of the way!” Turns out, that is not true. But what is true is that Johnny challenged her to a game of Twister in 1966, and the popularity of the game skyrocketed. Johnny was famous for being suave, handsome, married a few times, liking a drink in the evenings, and having feuds with random people. He was a man who could talk in front of 20 million a night but if he had to have a conversation with ten people—he was so awkward that it would make the experience uncomfortable for everyone. When he left the Tonight Show he basically disappeared except for one appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman. There is a whole story about the Tonight Show, David Letterman, and Jay Leno that we will talk about on our next Patreon bonus ep. Anyway, mainly due to his decades-long addiction to cigarettes, Johnny Carson died of respiratory failure on January 23, 2005, at the age of 79. He was survived by his 4th wife, Alexis Maas, 2 sons, and his younger brother. A nonreligious person who was quietly a part of the Skeptics movement—he had his body cremated with no public service or memorial. His legacy is he was one of the best television performers of all time. He kept his act (mostly) fresh with the changing times and was a big believer in promoting new talent. Behind the scenes, he was known for being shy and awkward and could carry a grudge that lasted for decades. Some of that behavior puts him in the Creep category which is why he is the subject of our show today. Johnny, Yo-less, Wobbler, Bigmac and Kirsty travel back to World War II, on the eve of the "Blackbury Blitz". Hiring Engineers: Junior, Senior, or Boot Camp Graduates? Johnny Ray Austin Shares His Take

If you’re an engineer in a leadership role where you’re dealt with the task of developing teams, the hiring process can be daunting. Do you hire junior engineers that you can shape and mold? Or senior engineers who are experienced, but come with baggage? And how do you throw boot camp graduates into the mix? Johnny Ray Austin joins me to lend his thoughts on the hiring process, including what he looks for in an engineer. Don’t miss it! Johnny is an experienced engineering executive and international public speaker. Johnny claims he got into leadership by sheer luck—but he ended up taking the leadership position and never looked back. He’s now the VP of engineering and CTO at Till, a company that helps people pay, stay, and thrive in their homes.  Outline of This Episode [2:23] Johnny Ray Austin’s background in engineering [4:33] The biggest mistake Johnny’s made—and the lesson learned [7:35] Transitioning into leadership: Johnny’s top tips [9:58] Handling remote work amidst a pandemic [14:00] “The Death of the Full Stack Developer” [18:54] How do engineering leaders keep up with new technology? [24:50] Hire for strengths, not lack of weaknesses [20:57] Develop a hiring process based on your company [27:24] Junior engineer vs. senior engineer: which is better? [31:38] Advice for managers for coaching junior engineers at home [34:18] Why you don’t want to rush through the junior engineer phase [38:15] Bootcamp graduates: to hire or not to hire?  [41:10] Embracing the concept of radical candor “The Death of the Full Stack Developer” Johnny’s talk, “The Death of the Full Stack Developer”, was a culmination of what he's seen developing in the industry. He’s seen an evolution of people switching engineering midway through other careers. The people who are switching have a more difficult time because of the expectations that are placed on engineers to know it all.  Catching up to everything that’s happened struck Johnny as silly. He can’t keep up with all of the new stuff out there. It also depends on our definition of “the stack” (It’s typically short-hand for front-end and back-end experience). 80% of people land on their website from a mobile device—but no one talks about mobile devices when they talk about the stack.  The full stack encompasses a lot more than what we mean when we use the phrase. When you look at it that way, it’s unreasonable to expect someone to be an expert in the entire stack. The true full stack developer is dead and gone. Johnny is quick to point out that that doesn’t mean you can’t be good in multiple areas. But you have to recognize that there are specialties. While you do want as much bang for your buck as possible when hiring, you can't burn people out. You have to set expectations accordingly. How do engineering leaders stay on top of new technology? Keep listening to hear our discussion.  Hire engineers for their strengths—not lack of weaknesses Johnny points out that—as an industry—we assume that one hiring process is going to work for every company out there. But it’s up to you to find a process that works for you and your team. You have to take into account questions like: Can they grow into what I might need in a year? Or 18 months? Does your company align with their future goals? The paradox is that you need to stop hiring for the now—and hire for tomorrow—while still solving today’s problems.  John screens a potential team member’s ability and willingness to grow with the company from the first phone call. He talks about their ambitions as a business and asks if the potential engineer can see themselves growing with that vision. Are they interested in leadership? Are they willing to mentor other engineers? What is their mindset regarding operational excellence? He’s honest about his expectations moving forward.  Hiring engineers is a risky endeavor. Bringing on the wrong person can damage the team. Johnny emphasizes that you should hire engineers based on their strengths. Then, you can hire other engineers to fill in the gaps. They can learn from each other while complementing each other.  Where are they really strong? What are their interests? Some people are good at cranking things out. Some people are great at communications. You want your engineers to work on the things that allow them to thrive. You need to build teams that are diverse because together you have something greater. Junior engineer, senior engineer, or boot camp grad: which is better?  Johnny points out that if you hire a senior engineer, you reap the benefit of their experience and track record. So there’s less training involved—but they often come with baggage. They’ve done things a certain way their entire career and tend to be resistant to learning new methods. With a junior engineer, you don’t get the experience—but you don’t get the scar tissue either. You have a blank slate. They can grow in a way that fits your company.  When Johnny is considering a junior engineer, he looks for two things: intellectual curiosity and the types of questions they ask. It’s a good indicator of someone willing to level up and gain experience. He’s found that intellectual curiosity is positively correlated with great performance.  To further complicate the hiring options, boot camp graduates can be thrown into the mix. Johnny is an advocate for hiring out of boot camps. Some of the sharpest engineers he knows had no formal education of any kind.  Someone with a CS degree knows a lot of theory but they have no clue how to be a day-to-day software engineer. Bootcamp developers have the day-to-day software engineer requirement without the foundation in theory. They often also have industry experience in other fields that they can bring to the table. Either way, there will be gaps to fill. As a manager, you have to decide which gaps you want to fill and train. This week on MIA Radio, we chat with Paula J. Caplan. Paula is a clinical and research psychologist, author of books and plays, playwright, actor, director, and activist. She was born and raised in Springfield, Missouri, attended Greenwood Laboratory School, received her A.B. with honors from Radcliffe College of Harvard University, and received her M.A. and Ph.D. in psychology from Duke University. Currently, she is an Associate at the Du Bois Institute, Hutchins Center for African and African American Research, Harvard University. She has been a Fellow at the Women and Public Policy Program of the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard; a Lecturer in Harvard's Program on Women, Gender, and Sexuality in the Psychology Department. She is former Full Professor of Applied Psychology and Head of the Centre for Women's Studies in Education at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, and former Lecturer in Women's Studies and Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto. Paula is also a passionate and steadfast advocate for service members, veterans and their families. She has written: When Johnny and Jane Come Marching Home: How All of Us Can Help Veterans and has founded the Listen to a Veteran! Project. In this interview, we discuss Paula’s work to support service members, veterans and their families, and the role psychiatric drugs have played in harming these communities. We discuss: Paula’s experiences that drove her towards working in mental health and advocating for veterans, which came from her father’s service in World War II. This included combat in the Battle of the Bulge. After hearing her father’s story that had been recorded as part of a history project, she learned her father had been a forward observer, and as result learned he had been on the front lines of the war. This led to her realizing that most American’s don’t understand military service and the only way of doing this, is through hearing veterans’ stories. Prior to the invasion of Iraq, she became concerned about the care of service members of veterans and veterans upon their return from war, and more concerned of the “psychiatrization”, diagnosing and prescribing psychiatric drugs to veterans. To get started in her efforts, she began by listening to a veteran share his experiences with her. The veteran talked for three hours, and Paula just listened. The next day, he called her and thanked her for listening, as he got a good night sleep for the first time in years. This led to her starting Listen to a Veteran, which was originally called “When Johnny and Jane Come Marching Home”. As part of this initiative, a veteran of any era can meet with another person who has volunteered to listen to the veteran share any stories or experiences they’re interested in sharing. Paula has faced barriers in getting this program expanded to the VA or throughout the “mainstream” mental health community because the system has been created to function based upon current “evidenced-based” best practices. How Paula is positive that we are currently causing harm to veterans and that alternative approaches need to immediately be implemented throughout the Department of Defense and Department of Veterans Affairs. How “therapy” needs to be dropped from the terms “art therapy”, “music therapy” and the like, so we can stop pathologizing individual experiences, and instead support people in doing things that improve their overall well-being. Any veterans who want to be a listener as part of Paula’s Listen to a Veteran initiative, or would like to have someone listen to them, they can go to listentoaveterans.org.

Jennifer has a Master’s Degree in Human Nutrition from the University of Southern Mississippi and will be giving away free tips to her listeners that she has given to countless clients as a health and wellness expert for the past twenty-three years. Jennifer’s journey began after getting frustrated with her own health journey so she decided to dig deep and see what she was missing. What she discovered was a very lopsided approach to healthy living. It’s very common for people to simply rely on a diet, an exercise routine, or a supplement. This one-sided approach simply leads to frustration and doesn’t fully address the whole body and holistic health. Jennifer quickly identified barriers that were holding her back from living life to the fullest. By addressing those obstacles, she started to see the beauty of harmony between body, mind, and soul. During her personal health journey, Jennifer became increasingly frustrated with the lack of simple, realistic, and holistic wellness information. After identifying this gap and huge need, Jennifer decided to launch her own company so she could coach and encourage others. That company is called Healthy Harmony. "Do you know that there's going to be two different groups of people in Heaven? There are going to be a group of 144,000 in heaven. But there's also gonna be another group, which is what God calls the great multitudes. Those are going to be the followers of Christ, those who are faithful to the end. But the way I see the 144,000 is there going to be 12 groups of 12 tribes of Israel. I just look at them as heroes." Family Discussions: What can you do today to be a hero to somebody in your life that needs a role model to follow?  If somebody looks at you, do they see a man or woman who's walking and following the lamb wherever he goes?  Transcription: 00:14          Do you know that there's going to be two different groups of people in Heaven? Unfortunately today, one of the cults - the Jehovah's Witness Cult teachers, that there's only gonna be 144,000 people in heaven. That's it. And so there is a fight to see who can do the most good deeds so they can become one of the 144,000. Can you imagine living your life knowing that that's all that we're going to get to heaven? Well they haven't read their scripture clearly because there are going to be a group of 144,000 in heaven. But there's also gonna be another group, which is what God calls the great multitudes. Those are going to be the followers of Christ, those who are faithful to the end. But the way I see the 144,000 is there going to be 12 groups of 12 tribes of Israel. I just look at them as heroes.   01:05          Listen to what scripture says about the 12,000 from each of the 12 tribes of Israel in Revelation chapter 14 verses three and four. It says this, "and they sing a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures and the elders and no one could learn the song except the 144,000 who had been purchased from the earth. These are the ones who've been not defiled with women, for they have kept himself at chased. These are the ones who follow the lamb wherever he goes." Isn't that great? "These are the ones who follow the lamb wherever he goes. They have been purchased from among men as the first fruits of God. And to the lamb."   01:48          Even the 144,000 have to be purchased of the blood of the lamb. But I just see them as heroes and I don't know if that's the way God sees it, but it's the way I see it. And I love the passage. "They're the ones who follow the lamb wherever they go." Who's your hero by the way? Who are the people on this earth that you look up to? Well, for me, it's not the gigantic business. You know, guys, the successful, you know, Donald Trump's and Bill Gates. It's certainly not the ones who flesh trophies around after winning gigantic Olympic championships or sports championships. To me, it's the folks who follow the lamb wherever he goes. You know who my hero is? He's a boy named Johnny Stallings. Johnny was born with down syndrome and Johnny lived 46 years, even though the doctors told him that he was only gonna live for four months. When Johnny died a couple of summers ago, I went down to visit with his dad, Gene Stallings, who's one of my very best friends and coach took me to Johnny's room.   02:50          And you know what? There wasn't one trophy in his room, although Johnny had been given dozens of trophies because he was the most likable person that you've ever met. When we traveled with his dad for these coaching to teams all over the country. They'd give Johnny all these great trophies, but Johnny would give them away. They'd given footballs with signatures that were worth, you know, thousands of dollars, I suppose, of some of the greatest players that ever lived. And Johnny would go outside and he'd give it away to somebody else. Johnny was a hero and as Coach Stalling, said, you know, the kid, he never had an impure thought. He never had an impure word. Somehow this kid couldn't count to 10, but he never forgot your name. And he had a smile that would melt the ice caps.   03:33          You know who a hero is? A hero is a dad. Who would you look at his son or daughter. And you say, tell me about your dad and that son or daughter says, my dad is the purest man I know. My dad is a godly man. That man is my hero. There's heroes all over this planet. They're in every home in America. There are kids who are walking into the school and standing firm for Christ. There are university students who are walking across their campus and when they graduate, there are dozens of people following Christ because of their life. Well, the heroes of the Bible are 12,000 from 12 tribes of Israel, but the heroes of the earth are the multitudes who are following Christ. And my question for you today is this, what can you do today to be a hero to somebody in your life that needs a role model to follow? And if somebody looks at you, do they see a man or woman who's walking and following the lamb wherever he goes? What a great challenge. What a great way to live.

Well, this week we talk to a fellow defender of liberty, economic time traveler and vice chair of the Mises Caucus, Luke Ensor! Luke wants to promote Austrian economics into the party and to advocate applying the science of human action—praxeology—in Libertarian Party efforts to counter modern-day Statism, and bring justice to the galaxy! Well, so listen to one of the Defenders of Capitalism, Luke Ensor! About The Guest: Luke Ensor grew up in a Republican household, he saw politics as being important to what happens in life as opposed to sports. Luke had his paradigm shattered with a YouTube trilogy called "Law Without Government", Ensor then stumbled around before finding Larken Rose and the Mises Institute, and he became an anti-political anarchist for a few years, and then he rethought his positions but was not impressed with Johnson/Weld, got more heavily involved in the party after the 2016 election. I'm a philosopher, poet, political operative, agrarian, bibliophile, and professional ditch digger, preferring the world of ideas to the following after men. Born into a family of farmers and construction workers, I diverged and immersed myself in books and learning. But ultimately I returned home and took up the working in the family construction company. My first political campaign was in 1964 at age 7, I pedaled my bike over my Nashville neighborhood handing out 500 pencils, and 500 buttons for Barry Goldwater. From that point on I was hooked. At present, I live on a small farm in Flynn's Lick, Tennessee, in a 500 sq. ft. house I share with a demented Sheltie dog. I am a past chair of the LPTN. And I'm known in all Libertarian circles as Liberty Claus. Also, Tom is probably one of the few Boomers that doesn't type in all caps. And actually listens to what young people have to say. Show Summary: Eric Peters Is Coming for Muh Roads! Johnny and Raylene have a great time talking with Auto-enthusiast, Eric Peters. His knowledge of the industry and government evils pair perfectly with his no-nonsense candor and sense of humor. When he talks about the cronyist protectionist policies, unnecessary regulations, and privacy concerns we are affected by, it's difficult to not be fired up! This guy is a road warrior for liberty, and when you listen to this show, you'll know why. About the Guest: Eric started out writing about cars for mainstream media outlets such as The Washington Times, Detroit News and Free Press, Investors Business Daily, The American Spectator, National Review, The Chicago Tribune and Wall Street Journal. At some point, it occurred to him that cars – and of course, motorcycles – represent freedom, but that the freedom to drive (and freedom to drive what you wanted to drive) was being systematically undermined by authoritarian control freaks dressed in red and blue. His former conservatism evolved into Libertarianism, this oddball idea that live – and let live – ought to be the basis for human interactions. His books include Road Hogs (2011) and Automotive Atrocities (2004). His latest book, Don’t Get Taken for a Ride, was published in 2017. You can get a copy of it here, for your favorite price. Eric lives in the boonies of rural Southwest Virginia with various animals and won’t get near an airport until the TSA’s Submission Training goes away. If you’re interested in contacting him about a radio or TV interview, speaking engagement or freelance project, drop him an e-mail at EPeters952@yahoo.com. About The Host: Johnny “Rocket” Adams was the creator and host of “The Johnny Rocket Launch Pad – Libertarian Rock n’ Roll Experience” and now “BLAST OFF with Johnny Rocket!” He’s also a musician, graphic artist, author, and former Chief Warrant Officer. Johnny spent his early days earning his stripes as a helicopter pilot in the U.S. Army. Back stateside, Johnny immersed himself in the classic works of Murray Rothbard, Henry Hazlitt, and Ludwig von Mises. From there the AnCap known as “Johnny Rocket” was born. Financial Autonomy
Investment Power-Ups - Episode 53

Financial Autonomy

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 10, 2018 12:03

Episode 53 – Investment Power-Ups I was binge watching a fictional Netflix series last week about a group of 4 guys who had made an app that had become a huge hit, Angry Birds style. Each of the 4 guys had particular skills, and there was a scene where one of the guys was feeling pretty lost. He bemoaned to his friend how such and such was great at art, another coding, and the 3rd guy, the one he was speaking to, was great at game design. But he asked, what was he in the group for? His friend considered this for a moment and said, “you know what you are in the team for? You’re the power-ups. When we were just about to run out of money, you went out and found more. When Johnny went off the rails, you brought him back. You hired some key people without whom, none of this success would have happened. And you made us all rich when you found a buyer willing buy our business. So, yeah, you’re the power-ups”. It was a great scene and it really stuck with me. It also made me think about what the power-ups are in the investment world. What are those things that really accelerate your investment plans? Well, I believe there are 3, and that’s what we’ll be exploring in today’s episode. A great way you can keep up with what’s happening here at Financial Autonomy is to sign up to our monthly email update “Gaining Choice”. You can do that by clicking on the Updates tab, which, depending on the device your using will be either at the bottom or right hand side of the page. As well as sharing the episodes released in the previous month, I share a Financial Autonomy experience or observation that’ve I’ve come across, news about what we’ve got coming up, and a podcast tip of the month. Importantly, it is only monthly, so we won’t be filling your in-box with more content than you could ever consume – as you will hopefully have noticed with these fairly short podcast episodes – quality over quantity is our mantra. Wikipedia describes power-ups as “objects that instantly benefit or add extra abilities to the game character as a game mechanic.” If you’re old enough to remember Pac-Man, the power-up of eating the power dots in the corners let you chase the ghosts, or in Sonic the Hedgehog, the most common power-up made you go much faster. From Super Mario Bros to modern day Clash of Clans, power-ups are an integral part of most video games. Whilst all of these games can be played without the power-ups, the core objective of the game is either impossible or at least extremely difficult to achieve without using them. And so when thinking about the achievement of your Financial Autonomy goal, whether that be a 6 month mini retirement at age 40, a career change next year, or a move to a regional town, what are the investment equivalents of a power-up, that can bring your goals within reach. I have identified 3 investment power-ups. They are: Regular savings and dollar cost averaging Gearing Dividend reinvestment and compounding Let’s take a look at each in some detail.    Regular savings and dollar cost averaging If you want to build up wealth to gain the choices in life that you deserve, then you need to save. And there is no better way to save than to commit to a regular savings plan. By this, I mean you have an automated process whereby a certain amount of money is transferred out of your normal living bank account and into investments. There are two reasons why this strategy brings success. For one, it bakes in discipline. The investment just happens. No chance for you to spend the money on some other non-essential item, or use the cash to book a flight to Hawaii. Part of the discipline benefit is also that it ensures you live to your budget – the money just comes straight out of your account, so you can only live off what remains. Savings discipline is far from an easy thing, so don’t under-estimate this benefit. The second reason an automated regular savings plan works is because of dollar cost averaging. Now I realise this is a bit of jargon, which is something I usually try to avoid, but in this case it’s not a tough concept to get your head around. Dollar cost averaging deals with the fact that there is never a perfect time to invest. It reminds me of something a keen fishing friend of mine once told me – “the best time to go fishing is whenever you can”. So rather than picking one moment in time and hoping that it proves to be a great entry point for your investment, you invest regularly, typically monthly. The price that you pay for your investment will vary month to month. Some months you pay a little more, some a little less. But over time what you get is the average price. Sure you don’t get the lowest price, but you also don’t get the highest either. A great example of how effective this process can be was seen during the 2008 period where share markets declined considerably. Many people who invest discretionarily, put things on hold during that period and sat on their cash. But for those with automated regular savings plans, they bought every month, and when markets recovered from 2009 onwards, the prices they paid for their investments during that period looked really attractive. There was no way to know during 2008 when the market would reach the bottom. So holding off and trying to pick that point is a mugs game. But through the discipline of investing regularly, you continue to buy during the dips, and you get the dollar cost average benefits of averaging out your purchase price. In fact assuming you are an employee, you are already engaged in an automated savings plan that utilises dollar cost averaging – it’s your superannuation contributions.   Gearing The second investment power-up is Gearing, and this is probably the most impactful. Gearing means borrowing for investment purposes, and like gears in an engine, the purpose is to magnify outcomes. As a simple illustration, if you have $10,000 invested and it grew by 8%, at the end of the year you would have $10,800. But had you matched that $10,000 with another $10,000 or borrowed money, your total investment would have grown to $21,600. Once you paid back the $10,000 that you borrowed, you’d be left with $11,600, so double the gain, or growth of $1,600, compared to the original $800. Now of course no-one will lend you the money for free, so you will need to pay some interest on the money that you borrowed, and that will reduce your gain. Indeed if the cost of borrowing were high enough you would reach a point where it would wipe out all of the gain. But the point is that for the same investment return, your gain is greater as a consequence of having geared. Now of course when thinking about gearing it is always important to remember that gearing magnifies both positive and negative outcomes. So in the earlier example, had the original investment lost 8%, then under the geared scenario the outcome would have been even worse. So gearing isn’t a free hit. It needs to be considered thoroughly. In particular your investment time frame is important. You need to be able to wait out an investment market downturn. In my work with clients I wouldn’t consider a gearing strategy unless the investor had a time frame of at least 5 years. Property investment is perhaps the best known form of geared investment. There aren’t many people who pay cash for a property. Back in episode 25 I highlighted the significant impact that gearing had on my first property purchase, so if you haven’t already consumed that one, check it out Episode 25 – My 68% return. The power of gearing – how smart borrowing can accelerate your journey to financial autonomy.   Dividend reinvestment and compounding I’ve written and spoken a lot about the power of compounding, most recently in the Settlers of Catan / Early Retirement episode, number 43. Sometimes described as the 8th wonder of the world, the idea of earning interest on your interest is compelling, and certainly qualifies as an investment power-up. The best use of compounding is reinvesting dividends on share and ETF investments. I’ve had several clients over the years who bought Commonwealth Bank shares back when they floated all those years ago. They bought a few thousand dollars’ worth, and ticked the box to have the dividends reinvested. That means that each 6 months when a dividend is paid, instead of the investor receiving the cash, the money is used to buy more shares. Roll forward 20+ years, they’re retired and are thinking about a new car or a big European holiday. Those CBA shares that they haven’t given much thought to are now worth $80,000, and they’ve got some great options. Sure, the share price has gone up, but that alone would have only gotten them to about $25,000. The rest of the growth is the power of compounding. And let’s face it, if they had have taken the cash with each dividend payment, it would have just got absorbed into the normal spending. A new pair of shoes, or the electricity bill. There’d be nothing to show for it now. Again, your super fund will be doing a form of this. All the earnings go back into the fund to fuel further growth. It explains why, early on in your working life your balance doesn’t seem to grow a lot, but 20 years into your career you tend to see more rapid gains – this is your past earnings generating new earnings. So there you have it, my 3 investment power-ups – Regular Savings and Dollar Cost Averaging, Gearing, and Dividend Reinvestment and Compounding. Hopefully you can use some or all of these to power-up your journey to Financial Autonomy. She paid for him to go to rehab, which helped him get clean and diagnosed him with bipolar disorder.  After Johnny got sober and went on medication, the band regrouped and continued touring and putting out albums. But last year, it was Nancy who needed help, as her health declined due to a degenerative nerve disease. Johnny and Molly Solomon in the backyard of the house they share with Johnny's mom Nancy and her husband. (Anna Sale)

Ep#40: Self-Publishing Advice Podcast: Indie Author Fringe Highlight with Sean Platt and Johnny B Truant of Sterling & Stone believe the key to writing better is to write faster. Here they talk about their creative process, how planning helps authors to write a better story in less time, even if they're "pantsers", and their new story-planning app. A lot of indie publishing is frontier thinking. Sean and Johnny have been figuring the best way to approach their writing process, and in this podcast they share some lessons and techniques they’ve learned along the way. Here are three elements from this podcast that really resonated with me: Understanding your genre foundations. Know your characters. The importance of cover design for your readers, and you. Want to know why some books sell more than others? This information is out there and accessible to anyone who wants to take the time to understand their genre better. At the end of the day, if you want to sell more books, you have to write books that appeal to the genre’s core audience. When Johnny and Sean first started writing together it was as simple Sean coming out with a very simple outline and then Johnny turning it into a book. Along the way, David Wright joined the writing team, and they developed a systematic way of writing together that allows them to establish core relationships with the characters. At the end of this process, there’s enough information for each of the writing team to be able to picture the locations and know the characters. They have a connection with all of them, and this is one of the elements that allow them to write their stories faster. The Cover Design topic never gets old! But what was interesting was hearing about Sean and Johnny’s writing process. For Book 1 in the Invasion series, they commissioned the book cover before they started writing, and it provided some creative inspiration for their story details. During their cover design discussion, Johnny and Sean also discussed the importance of genre conventions in the cover process. Yes we all want our book to stand out in our genre, but if you design against the established conventions, especially in the major genres, you may end up getting passed over rather than stand out.  Our weekly Self-Publishing Advicebroadcast is brought to you by ALLi, the Alliance of Independent Authors. #14 -- Johnny Hanna, Building Homie as a Company to Last and to Own

Founder and CEO of Homie, Johnny Hanna defies the entrepreneurial stereotypes. He is father of six kids under nine, and when his wife calls to remind him to come home from work, he does. Even more contrarian, Johnny Hanna has never been focused on the big exit. Instead, he has created companies "built to run," building cohesive teams and turning away from big-ticket purchase offers. When Johnny's first company, Entrata, reached $100M in recurring revenue, his gut told him it was time to move on in an amicable parting with his co-partners. He saw an opportunity to materially disrupt the real estate market at last. Unlike Zillow or Redfin, Homie is designed for the home seller who wants to cut out the real estate agent, save money and streamline the sale process with "pure automation." With 70% - 80% of home buyers finding their homes online without the assistance of an agent, the vision seems inevitable, and Johnny just may have the tools and tenacity to make that possibility a reality.. When it comes to leadership, Johnny's humble, down to earth attitude is a huge part of what makes him a success. He says,"I'm confident in what I don't know," and he isn't afraid to hire people who (according to him) are smarter than he is to fill in the gaps in his knowledge. Unlike many startups whose company culture is left to evolve organically, Johnny pays close attention to fit when hiring. He looks for loyal and positive-minded candidates. Johnny’s interview on the Real Leaders podcast with Sue Heilbronner offers a glimpse of the character of a founder who doesn't fit the standard mold. He prefers Utah to the Silicon Valley. He relishes the pressure from his board. He wants to solve the problem Homie addresses no matter who invests in it.
