Following the thread from last week's discussion, we're taking a close look at how hygienists get paid and, most importantly, how they can get paid well. Rachel Wall (who previously appeared on episode 109) was kind enough to stop by again to discuss how compensation can be most efficiently and fairly distributed throughout any clinic's hygiene department. Rachel Teel Wall, RDH, BS, is the founder and owner of Inspired Hygiene. Through coaching and seminars, Inspired Hygiene aims to maximize the profit and productivity of every dental team's hygiene department with a particular focus on compensation models. Her two decades of experience in the industry encompasses her time as both a hygienist and an office administrator. In this episode, Rachel chats with us about the importance of everyone playing their role in a dental practice and what she thinks makes for an ideal compensation model. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: Interview starts: 2:50 - Looking at the different compensation models available to hygienists. - Explaining the 3:1 compensation model. - Understanding everybody’s responsibilities in a dental clinic. - Making the most of your time, your dentist’s time and managing patient relations.  - What Rachel believes is the best compensation model for everybody involved. - Finding that right balance between overtreatment and undertreatment. QUOTES: “I think everyone should at least be open to adapting and learning new ways.” “A business owner has a responsibility to make sure the business is profitable, and then we as hygienists have the responsibility to at least be aware of that and know where we stand.” “I think everybody should have the opportunity to be on the other side of that table at least once in your life because it’s quite sobering.” “I wanna learn more about your treatment philosophy so that I can do a better job of recommending treatment that matches what you would recommend.” LINKS: Inspired Hygiene Return on Hygiene book - Use promo code TALE to pay only $12.95! 3:1 video https://inspiredhygiene.com/hygiene-compensation-is-it-a-win-win/?fbclid=IwAR0A20kvE-H-VXWi1EF6CwANAHGsdDdhiCWvape6f6jAZichvtJ6XIJspKk https://www.dentistryiq.com/articles/2018/10/hygiene-production-as-percentage-of-total-production.html?fbclid=IwAR3y3uoXAcg_VPTdqCqNhVWnhax6e7JrL6HsUB70muJo23V1clOcb-BQEV4 A Tale of Two Hygienists homepage - https://ataleoftwohygienists.com/   AToTH on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/aTaleOfTwoHygienists/    AToTH on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/ataleoftwohygienists    AToTH on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/atoth/?originalSubdomain=ca

Rachel graduated from Glasgow Caledonian University in 2004 with a BSc in Medical Illustration. After a few years of work and starting a family, Rachel decided to go back into clinical dentistry and completed a course in dental therapy in 2013. While doing the course and working, Rachel decided she wanted more of a clinical scope and decided to get into dentistry, leading her to the University of Aberdeen in 2017. She is currently a dental student and continues her artwork. A few years ago, her artwork began to get noticed and she was commissioned by the British Dental Journal to illustrate a series of covers for the 100th year anniversary of their BDA Library, which is what shes been illustrating for the past few months. In this week’s episode, we talk about what motivated her to go back to school and get her credentials, and what has been the ambition behind her ongoing evolution and not settling for where she was. We talk about the power of art in dentistry, and science in general, as well as Rachel’s hope to leave behind a legacy of art and excellent patient care. There are so many great reasons to be involved in the BuildHer Collective.  Building can be a stressful and somewhat lonely journey but with a group of passionate and collaborative women supporting you all the way through, the building journey becomes so much more fun.   In this episode, Rebeka visits one of our very stylish and thoughtful BuildHer’s, Rachel Harris, to talk about the recent renovation of her beautiful family home in Preston.  Purchasing the Calafornian bungalow a number of years ago while living interstate, Rachel and her husband knew there was a lot of work to be done but instead of rushing ahead, they took their time to carefully research and be thoughtful throughout the design phase.   Rebeka talks to Rachel in detail about the extension to the back of her house, specifically how she implemented passive solar principals such as cross ventilation, heat pumps, a solar chimney and so much more.  By incorporating these design features into the build, Rachel’s home is not only comfortable all year round, but also oozes a thoughtfulness which resonates in each space.   Building and renovation takes time and it can be tempting to cut corners or just take the easy road to get the job done.  What Rachel did so well and we are so proud to see, is that she was thoughtful in the design process to determine the values of her family.  By doing this and taking a bit more time in the design phase, she created a beautiful energy efficient home with well designed spaces that capture sunlight and make you want to linger a little longer.   Rachel’s thoughtfulness is tangible in every aspect of the design.  Tune in to hear more about how Rachel incorporated passive solar principals into her build and how you could do it too!   LINKS: Website: https://buildhercollective.com.au/ Instagram: @buildhercollective Register for a call: https://go.oncehub.com/BuildHer

In part 2 of Cheryl’s interview today with Rachel Gutter, President of the IWBI, they discuss the IWBI’s new Task Force---with more than 250 members---whose goal is to help reduce the health burden of COVID-19 and other respiratory infections in the built environment. Rachel shares, “There was an unprecedented opportunity and a moral obligation in this crisis and we stood up the Task Force. I am thrilled to report that we had more than 400 volunteers raise their hands to participate, and the diversity is what is so astonishing.” This and more on the changing face of health and wellness in the built environment on part 2 of today’s episode with Rachel Gutter. The International WELL Building Institute is a public benefit corporation with a mission to improve human health and well-being through the built environment. The WELL v2 pilot is the latest version of its popular WELL Building Standard (WELL), and the WELL Community Standard pilot is a district scale rating system that sets a new global benchmark for healthy communities. WELL is focused exclusively on the ways that buildings and communities, and everything in them, can improve our comfort, drive better choices, and generally enhance, not compromise, our health and wellness. IWBI mobilizes the wellness community through management of the WELL AP credential, the pursuit of applicable research, the development of educational resources, and advocacy for policies that promote health and wellness everywhere. IWBI is a participant of the United Nations Global Compact, the world’s largest corporate citizenship initiative, and helps companies advance the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through the use of WELL. More information on WELL can be found by visiting: https://www.wellcertified.com/ and http://placesmatter.com. In Part 2 of Cheryl’s conversation with Rachel Gutter, you will learn: What was the IWBI office environment like when COVID-19 hit? As a response to the current global pandemic, the IWBI announced on March 31st, its assembly of a Task Force---with more than 250 members---whose goal is to help reduce the health burden of COVID-19 and other respiratory infections in the built environment. What is this task force and how can it help healthcare design professionals, moving forward? Why was it important to include academics and public health leaders from other countries outside of the US in IWBI’s Task Force? What is the timeline of the Task Force and what is happening now? What is the WELL Conference? As the healthcare design community in the US begins to reassess and strategize about how to best work with their clients moving forward on infectious disease control issues in the built environment, what specific things should they be now focusing on? What is the most important thing the healthcare community can do to prepare for another outbreak? How can the IWBI help mitigate and address the mental health issues--the trauma from this time? How is the IWBI partnering with hospitals? What is the first step for healthcare professionals interested in the WELL Building Standard? How to build up your own WELL scorecard within your own building. Why there’s never been a better time to take the WELL AP Exam. Right now, the cost is 50% off with a $99 price tag for students. What Rachel learned during her work at USGBC that she has applied and is applying to her work on the IWBI. How both Rachel’s Grandmothers powerfully influenced her life and her work. Rachel’s advice for the younger generation of interior design and architecture students who are considering health and wellness and healthcare as a specialization, but are also afraid of it. Rachel’s gift is to invite us to be present and purposeful in our lives and that same presence and purpose calls us now to take that pain and turn it into deeper understanding and action. To support that, in the show notes, I’m including a link to an episode I recorded a few years ago with the co-founder of Mother’s Against Police Brutality Sara Mokuria, and to a set of Anti-Racism resources that Rachel shared in a post, she wrote today. Also in that post, Rachel offered these words from her new book Live Love Now, that I invite us to sit with, along with a few moments of silence, to honor George Floyd, and so many other men like him. "What if we responded to the injustices inflicted on human lives with empathy and action rather than defensiveness or apathy? What if we lived as if we truly believed it’s not 'your back' or 'my back,' but 'our back'?"   Resources Mentioned in the Opening Call to Action in Honor of George Floyd:  Ep33: Beyond the Trauma: Legacy, Compassion and Change with Mother’s Against Police Brutality Co-Founder Sara Mokuria Anti-Racism Resources   The Mother's Quest Manifesto Challenge is technically over, but the Reflection Journal, live videos, and reflective prompts are all still waiting for you in the Mother's Quest Facebook Group. My guest this week is historian and author Dr. Rachel Chrastil. She recently wrote a book called How to Be Childless: A History and Philosophy of Life Without Children. We discussed the intersection of her professional and personal interest in this topic—Rachel herself has chosen not to have kids—and several of the myths about a life without children. Her perspective is uplifting, as she emphasizes the joy in living that is available to all, regardless of parenthood status, and the symbiosis that exists between those who do and those who don't have kids. Topics we touched on in this episode included: How common childlessness is (about 15% in the US for women 45 and older) How Rachel’s voluntary childlessness affected her decision to write this book The difficulty in clearly distinguishing between voluntary and involuntary childlessness Why being childless has gotten a bad rap, while having a kids is seen as wholesome and virtuous The gravity that many people feel from being the final link in the chain of life that led to them The frequent accusation that women who choose to be childless are “selfish” The difficulty in talking about one’s decision not to have kids Challenges related to the fear of regret around childlessness Research on the association between happiness and parenthood Making the most of our choices rather than making perfect choices What Rachel loves about her life The prospects in old age for parents versus the childless The interdependence between parents and the childless Her book is available on Amazon: How to Be Childless (affiliate link). Rachel Chrastil, PhD, author of How to Be Childless, is a historian of modern Europe, an award-winning teacher, and a Fulbright Scholar. Her first two books, Organizing for War: France 1870-1914 and The Siege of Strasbourg, examine civilian dilemmas in the face of war. She lives in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she is Professor of History and Associate Dean in the College of Arts and Sciences at Xavier University. One day in the early summer of 2017, about four hundred people disappear from their lives. They leave behind cell phones, credit cards, jobs, houses, families--everything--all on the same day. Where have they gone? Why? The only answer, for weeks, is silence. Kevin Moore is one of them. Former military, disaffected, restless, Kevin leaves behind his retail job in San Francisco, sends a good-bye text to his mother, dumps his phone and wallet into a trash can, and disappears. The movement calls itself the Massive Brigade, and they believe change isn't coming fast enough to America. But are they a protest organization, a political movement, or a terrorist group? What do they want? The FBI isn't taking any chances. Special Agent Rachel Proulx has been following the growth of left-wing political groups in the U.S. since the fall of 2016, and is very familiar with Martin Bishop, the charismatic leader of the Massive Brigade. But she needs her colleagues to take her seriously in order to find these people before they put their plan--whatever it is--into action. What Rachel uncovers will shock the entire nation, and the aftermath of her investigation will reverberate through the FBI to the highest levels of government. Special Guest: Olen Steinhauer.

My guest for The Happy Hour # 227 is Rachel Joy. Rachel is a pastor's wife, mom to four and the Founder & Executive Director of Sparrow Women. Sparrow Women exists to catalyze the next generation of reconcilers. Rachel is a believer in strong coffee, long dinners, and spontaneous dance parties. On today's show Rachel shares the story of how she came to start Sparrow Women and the Sparrow Conference. Rachel and I talk about what it was like for her when she first started to dig deep and ask questions about racial equality, reflect on her own privilege, and examine how the world is truly set up. I love how Rachel says we are all Kingdom Cultivators, but to do the work, we must first understand what God's kingdom is.  Rachel and I discuss how the topic of racial harmony and reconciliation can seem overwhelming at first, and she provides some first steps to take. Rachel also honestly shares how the walk can be messy, the conversations difficult, and we're not promised that it will be easy. But, we are called to be peacemakers and reconcilers, and with Christ, it is possible.  {You can listen to the show HERE, and make sure you never miss a Happy Hour by subscribing through your favorite podcast app (ie. iTunes, Stitcher).  And of course, I would love if you would share with your friends!} Links From the Show Sparrow Women Sparrow Conference 2019 - Use code: HAPPY for special discounted rate! Not to mention, her and I have something in common as she just found out she’s pregnant, this time with her second child! You’re going to hear how she started her first online business in the fitness space 6 years ago when she was pregnant with her first daughter. Back then Rachel knew she wanted to create something fast online, and she was so successful running her own Facebook ads for her boot camp that other fitness trainers started approaching her for help growing their businesses. Rachel now has an online web design and Facebook ads agency serving coaches and online course creators that has really taken off. In fact, Rachel is fully booked and has a waiting list of at least 6 months at the moment, but getting to this point wasn’t without some struggles, which she talks about today. Rachel’s been able to build an amazing business working with the right clients, and she now just works with clients launching.  In this episode, Rachel is going to share how she has actually been able to grow more quickly by keeping things small, and by “scaling back.” The most exciting takeaway for listeners of this episode is hearing that there will never be a shortage of work for good Facebook ads managers! My guest for The Happy Hour # 196 is Rachel Henry. Rachel is wife to her high school sweetheart, Simon, and they have six beautiful children whom she's home-schooled for the last two years. Rachel and her family reside in Florida where they like to live like they're on vacation every day! Friends, I'm going to get straight to it - today's show is difficult to listen to. It's difficult, but incredibly powerful and full of hope and healing amidst tragedy. A few warnings: in the episode today Rachel talks about the night that her home was broken into and she was raped. I encourage younger ears to have an adult listen first. Also, if you struggle with fear around these topics, have a trusted friend listen first and guide you on if you should listen and/or any parts you should skip. What Rachel has experienced is absolutely horrific. As you listen to her share her story, you will also hear loud and clear the hope she carries, and how God has been with her and her family through their journey. I was floored listening to her describe the trial and how she faced her attackers and told them she forgave them, and how she's prayed for them. In the last part of the show, Rachel talks about her journey of healing and how crucial it was to find the right therapy. Rachel describes the effectiveness of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) with traumatic experiences and how it could help others. I am incredibly grateful to Rachel for her vulnerability and sharing her story so that others would be encouraged and have hope. {You can listen to the show HERE. And of course, I would love if you would share with your friends.
