Michael Glover went from Lehman Brothers to an #entrepreneur of one of Long Island's new showcase #pickleball clubs. He'd be the first to tell you he had no idea what he was doing when he started. In this episode, we talk about how Michael stumbled into pickleball, why he jumped into a second, bigger facility even as competition was exploding, and what actually keeps people coming back to his club even with a flood of new facilities on Long Island. We also get into why this game caught fire the way it did, what the banger vs. dinker debate says about where pickleball is heading, and why the rating system drives people crazy. Michael has great insights and advice on how to keep Pickleball sane and fun. For existing and would-be entrepreneurs, the best part of this conversation is what Michael says is the only way you keep customers coming back. Spoiler-alert, it has nothing to do with marketing, sponsors or big events.
Acting can be a tough profession. Writer/Director Michael Glover Smith talks about why people are drawn to actors, the dangers of AI, and the sacrifices an artist must make to bring their work to life. Split Tooth Media has done extensive coverage of Michael Glover Smith's body of work over the years. Our own Bennett Glace has interviewed him three times — once when his film Mercury in Retrograde (2017) streamed as part of the Gene Siskel Film Center's “Film Center From Your Sofa” series, and again after the release of his feature film Relative (2022). A third interview was conducted to follow a Split Tooth Presents screening of Mercury in Retrograde at Portland's Movie Madness Miniplex. Since then, Smith has premiered two films here on our site — Paper Planes (2023), a melancholy Christmas story about agoraphobia, and a vulnerable account of a first date entitled Handle With Care (2024). It is easy to write so much about a creator whose output has been as consistent as Smith's. In 2026, he already has two artistic endeavors of note. The first is Bob Dylan as Filmmaker: No Time To Think, a book by Smith released on March 2. The second is his fifth official feature film, Hekla, which premiered at the 29th annual George Lindsey UNA Film Festival in Alabama on March 6. It was quite the busy week for Michael Glover Smith, but he still made time to chat with me about these two new projects and his career as a whole. With Hekla, Smith crafts his most intimate portrait of a Chicagoan to date. The film's titular character, a young actress played exuberantly by Elizabeth Stam, spends an entire day moving from one audition to another, rarely getting a moment to breathe. During all of this, she has to deal with relationship issues, headshot appointments, and a live bar performance of Macbeth that night. The character of Hekla first appeared in Smith's film Relative and Stam was an obvious standout amongst the cast. The decision to revisit this character also marks Smith's first time making a film without an ensemble cast at the forefront. Typically, a Michael Glover Smith venture features two couples, three couples, or an entire family to keep up with. Here, the filmmaker shows growth in his ability to focus on a sole protagonist, one that Stam herself helped him craft. The film has already garnered some rave reception from those who saw it in Alabama and will continue its festival run this week on March 28 at the Beloit International Film Festival in Wisconsin. Tune in to hear my conversation with Michael Glover Smith. He was an incredible guest on the podcast and had lots of great advice to give to those crazy enough to pursue a career in film. We discuss the importance of collaborating with the same people throughout your career, pushing your stylistic limits as a director, and taking chances in the editing room. Give it a listen.

A deep dive into one of the most overlooked -- and fascinating -- sides of the 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature winner: Bob Dylan, the filmmaker. While his music and lyrics have been studied endlessly, his work behind (and in front of) the camera remains largely unexplored. No other book has taken this angle, and with Dylan's legend still growing, the audience is more than ready for a bold new take. Bob Dylan as Filmmaker: No Time to Think (McNidder and Grace, 2026), the first book of its kind, opens up exciting new ways to think about the artistry of Bob Dylan. It offers a captivating exploration into movies that, according to Michael, showcase Bob Dylan not just as a subject, but as the primary author. These include Eat the Document--a short, experimental television film shot in 1966 and released in 1972; the sprawling, genre-blurring epic Renaldo and Clara (1978), both directed by Dylan himself; and the darkly surreal Masked and Anonymous (2003), directed by Larry Charles but co-written by and starring Dylan. Bob Dylan as Filmmaker explores what these movies reveal about "how it feels" to be Bob Dylan during three defining eras of his career: the revolutionary 1960s, the introspective 1970s, and the enigmatic early 2000s. Just as crucially, they illuminate Dylan's remarkable instinct for using film not merely as a medium, but as a deeply personal mode of expression. The book also provides an essential survey of Dylan's most recent movie projects, including those by other directors, in which Dylan's influence is less overt but no less powerful. Here, Michael argues that Dylan operates as a kind of "invisible co-author" in Martin Scorsese's Rolling Thunder Revue (2019), where Dylan appears as a slippery, self-mythologizing interviewee; Alma Har'el's haunting Shadow Kingdom (2021), a stylized livestream performance; and James Mangold's A Complete Unknown (2024), the Timothée Chalamet-led biopic shaped in part by Dylan's behind-the-scenes "script approval." Michael Glover Smith is a Chicago-based filmmaker, author and teacher. Michael's most recent movie, Hekla, starring Elizabeth Stam, will have it's festival premiere in early 2026. Michael is also the director of four award-winning feature films, the most recent of which, Relative, stars Wendy Robie (Twin Peaks) and is distributed by Music Box Films. His previous book, Flickering Empire: How Chicago Invented the U.S. Film Industry (co-written with Adam Selzer), was published by Columbia University Press to acclaim in 2015. On Tuesday, December 3. Michael Smith and I flew down to Orlando, FL from Chicago, IL for a press and guild screening of the new James Mangold film about Bob Dylan. It was an amazing experience. Immediately after the film, Michael and I went to the AMC theatre bar and talked for almost 2 hours about the film. Unfortunately I only hit record about halfway through our conversation, so you will be joining us mid-convo. First you'll hear the 45 second spoiler free reaction and then we'll transition to the full conversation. Please be aware this is a FULL SPOILER REVIEW. If you haven't seen the film yet, I highly recommend you turn this off now, and wait until after you see it. You have been warned! Enjoy! Michael Glover Smith loves movies so much, it was inevitable that he would go on to make some of his own. Not only that, he writes about movies, teaches film classes, and has even written a book on Chicago film history. I had the immense pleasure of finally catching up with MERCURY IN RETROGRADE and shared my reaction to a casting choice during our interview here, but the bulk of the conversation surrounds his latest film, the empathic family dramedy RELATIVE. A great ensemble of talent carries this sweet story of a Chicago-based family getting together for their son's college graduation. A lot of tension emerges but so does a lot of compassion and concern for one another. Wait til you hear about some of the cast, especially the accomplished actors that play the parents. Michael shared a lot of interesting and unexpected connections regarding everyone and even though we talked for close to an hour, there were other questions I could've asked since he's articulate/passionate about his work. Definitely check out the RELATIVE website below and if you get this in time, there's a special screening event taking place in the neighborhood where he resides and where some of the film was shot. If you miss that screening at The New 400 coming up, there will be plenty of opportunities so stay tuned. Grateful to Michael for taking some time out and looking forward to talking with him again. Stay tuned for more content this month coming from Bill Ackerman and my first director-centric episode in quite awhile comes out in a couple weeks! With the Sundance Film Festival wrapping up, there are still more discussions to be had about the fest's most exciting entries. Alongside his regular collaborations with Richard Linklater, composer Graham Reynolds finds the time to score other intriguing indies like Samantha Buck and Marie Schlingmann's riveting, idiosyncratic Sister Aimee - a Dust Bowl-inflected journey extrapolating from the real-life disappearance of a traveling evangelist in the 1920s (Anna Margaret Hollyman), imagining that missing period as a vibrant road trip to the border with her lover (Michael Mosley) and a mysterious Latina guide (Andrea Suarez Paz) in tow. Together, we talk about the origins of the project, the importance of capturing the Western feel of the film, and the challenges and delights of working with filmmakers like Buck, Schlingmann, and Linklater. Before that, however, I was extraordinarily pleased to sit down with fellow Chicago critic, friend, and filmmaker Michael Glover Smith (Mercury in Retrograde) about his latest Chicago-set film, the comedic triptych Rendezvous in Chicago. Structured by three different couples at three different stages in their relationship - a man and woman's first conversation in a bar, a gay couple taking some simple-yet-bold next steps, and a woman kicking her deadbeat boyfriend out of their apartment - Rendezvous carries the intimacy of Rohmer alongside the sparse experimentation of Bresson, in a much lighter and more accessible package. It's a cracking entry in the filmmaker's already strong oeuvre, and we get into some spoiler-heavy talk about the film before its Chicago premiere this weekend at the Gene Siskel Film Center. My guest today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview is a man who as soon as he connected with me I thought "I need to have him on the show" First he is British, and you can't fail to love a bit of British can you? Secondly his email subject was simply "An Entrepreneur Who Lost His Mind" You can't fail to love a bit of Insane British can you? As he says "I've spent most of my life feeling sort of… broken. Especially in the brain department. As a teenager and young adult, I was secretly crippled with social anxiety. Going into any social situation involving anyone I wasn't super close to would, to put it technically, cause an internal shit storm. At one point I couldn't even leave the house without getting embarrassing sweat stains under the arms, even in the dead of winter. After managing to bury all this deep inside me (cos that's what a 'real man' does), I tried to somewhat get on with a normal adult life. I went to university, got a job, quit, got qualified as a personal trainer and embarked on a career in health and fitness that ended up with me owning my own studio. Then I hit a brick wall. Despite finally having a growing business that I'd worked my balls off for, I was miserable, overworked and monumentally lonely. In fact, I was depressed. So I gave up on what I thought was my dream business. I sold the equipment, referred all my lovely clients to other trainers and even sold my car and many other possessions. And I embarked on a journey to discover what the hell was going on in my head and heart that was preventing me from being that seemingly elusive combination of happy and successful. And when you listen to his podcast "The Enlightened Entrepreneurial Badasses" Podcast" episode one you can see that this is a guy who realises that you start with whats in your heart. And then program your brain to be able to achieve it. A quick two step, that is ready to be taken, is so simple, but so complicated at the same time. So when you hear this guy talk about the hustle he has taken to get his own business. The long hours it took. Was he always on a path to losing his mind, or could he have done something so different? And is he truly happy where he is, or is he still on the path to losing his mind, just in a different setting? Well lets find out as we bring onto the show to start joining up dots with the one and only Mr Michael Glover

It's enabled me to believe that it's ok to express my emotions and not to suppress everything. Now I know it's not weak of me to have these emotions. I'm still a man, even though I might express emotion.Thoughts on BreathingBreathing is what I use to keep myself focused on the present moment. It's a huge part of our health. If we have a poor breathing pattern, it can screw up a whole host of other things. Breathing is the only thing we can concentrate on right now, and it just reminds us that it's happening right now. I imagine my breath and I imagine the little particles of air going in and spreading throughout my body. This brings me to the present moment and to what's going on inside my body.Suggested ResourcesBook: How To Eat, Move and Be Healthy by Paul ChekApp: www.Brain.fm (This is a website, they don't have an actual app yet)

Just when you thought you had all of this Health and Fitness stuff all figured out, someone like Michael Glover comes along and blows your mind. After this conversation with Michael Glover, I've taken another look at my own programs and look forward to adding his mindset to what I've been doing for years. You know I'm big on mindset when it comes to reaching your goals in being a abundant man. In this episode, we're all going to learn how to apply mindset to your health and fitness like you most likely never considered. [spp-tweet tweet="You get to decide who you want to be"] Michael Is not what you could call normal. You can probably tell that by reading or listening to any of the content Michael puts out there. But that's just Michael! And he's recently made a commitment to himself to show up in everything he does as fully and unapologetically as 'Michael' as possible. You see, since 2011 Michael has read, researched, studied and worked in the field of health and nutrition pretty extensively. It's something it could be said he has an obsession over. Yet in the past Michael held back talking about health in the way he really wanted to talk about it because he was worried what people might think. So he basically said "screw it" and decided it was time for some authenticity up in here! And to allow his pretty dry, dead-pan sense of humour to shine through while giving what he believes to be some top quality nutritional and health guidance. You're going to love this conversation...
