Send us a textEpisode 190 of the Hey You Guys Podcast is here, and this week, Liam and Rob look back at 1994's anime-inspired cult classic, Guyver: Dark Hero. Is it well directed? Probably not. Is the script and acting any good? Hmmmm, that's probably a no too. Is it loads of fun? Yes.....yes it is. Guyver: Dark Hero is far from perfect, but with it's exceptional choreography, wonderful martial arts action and great costume design, it remains an enjoyably daft take on the beloved source material.....if you can look past its faults of course. Armed with a guest co-host, our heroes puzzle out a sequel to a film about Cronenberg alien goo Power Rangers armor.
This week we are talking about a movie that is celebrating its 30th anniversary, "Guyver: Dark Hero." This movie had to have influenced "Power Rangers" and completely knocked my socks off. This one had us discussing hitchhiking adventures and the unexpected dangers of gas station chili, the amazing SFX, hiding drugs in the plastic of Barbie dolls, the fact no one is shocked by a spaceship showing up out of nowhere, and a ton more. Such a fun movie to discuss. Watch the unedited review at sequelsonly.com/guyver2 The next sequel up is going to be a late celebration of 4/20 by discussing "How High 2" and for it, I chatted with Susan Gallagher. Susan is a southern belle who had a very interesting journey to acting, but her desire for the business helped her land roles in hit series like "Cobra Kai". She was a blast and shared one of my favorite audition stories ever. Ben and Pogues watch Guyver: Dark Hero. They talk decent monster design, incredibly slow pacing, and Ben reveals how news works in this film.
Chris and Arian discuss Steve Wang's DTV opus, Guyver Dark Hero. The show is especially apt, as the duo attended the 30th anniversary screening in Santa Ana, California. They recap the event along with a hardy brekdown of what makes Dark Hero a great flim. Steve Wang is a legendary special effects artist who worked on PREDATOR, HELLBOY, GREMLINS 2 and dozens of other stone-cold classics. He's also a great director. No one in North America has done a better job of marrying complex practical special effects and high octane Hong Kong-style action than Steve Wang in films like KUNG FU RASCALS, GUYVER: DARK HERO and DRIVE (1997). I enjoyed speaking to Steve about his directorial career, and topics under discussion include his time as the director (briefly) of POWER RANGERS: THE MOVIE, an unmade Steven Seagal film, and a reboot of FIST OF THE NORTH STAR that was meant to star Mark Dacascos! *** For an interview more centred around Steve Wang's make-up career, check out his great appearance on THE DARK SOCIETY PODCAST: https://soundcloud.com/darkartsociety/steve-wang-ep-155. Hollywood doesn't really have a great track record when it comes to doing live action films based on anime. Only twice have they accomplished in doing great adaptations with Speed Racer and Guyver: Dark Hero. So in comes Ghost In The Shell which despite it being a film thats all fluff and no substance, it manages to also not being an entirely horrible film. Overall what we have is a very paint by numbers film that hits the fanservice stuff from the anime but doesn't nail the deep philosophical stuff the 95 movie, manga and even the tv show did. 3BG rating: 2 out of 5
Travis once again transforms into a Japanese superhero character in Guyver: Dark Hero (1994). Will he find love? Will he uncover another insidious Zoanoid plot? Will he fight like a Mighty Morphin Power Ranger? You can find out to listening to this week's exciting episode! http://searchforschlock.com/media/podcasts/sfs-058-dondi.mp3 Download MP3 Based on a comic strip that was published for three decades but that you've somehow never heard of, Dondi is the story of an adorable orphan boy (David Kory, a child actor so bad that nobody even seems to have done a 'where are they now' piece on him) who gets adopted by a philandering American G.I. (world-weary Fugitive star David Janssen, looking miserable as ever in this upbeat role). There's a federal law that all descriptions of this movie must contain the word "saccharine", so there you go, feds. This movie was brought to our attention by the very hit-or-miss Fifty Worst Films of All Time, and in our opinion at least, they got this one right -- it may well have unseated the abysmal Guyver: Dark Hero as Worst Piece of Crap We've Ever Sat Through for This. Original post located at searchforschlock.com.
http://searchforschlock.com/media/podcasts/sfs-027-GuyverDarkHero.mp3 Download MP3 Not nearly long enough ago, because the guy who wrote our theme song demanded it, we watched The Guyver...and declared it The Very Worst Film that we've watched for the purpose of podcasting. But the sequel must not be so bad, right? Certainly the guy who wrote the 'Reception' chapter of the Guyver: Dark Hero Wikipedia entry thinks it's better than the original.
