Excerpt: (Re: Advice for new YouTubers) Just do it. Cliche question, cliche answer. No I'll get more specific. What advice? I think, I don't think, okay. My advice is, I think your first 20 videos are gonna be bad. That's my advice. Hafu (Hafu Go) is a Vancouver-based, Canadian YouTuber with at the time of this episode released over 850,000 Subscribers. He wasn't satisfied with his time at school studying marketing and the direction of his life and decided to give becoming a YouTuber a chance. He originally started doing videos related to school with Campus crawls at some of the biggest schools like Harvard, Stanford, and UBC. When the pandemic hit he could no longer travel and changed to things he could do locally. His big break-out video was Surviving 24 Hours with a Shaolin Kung Fu Master. This leads him to reach out to other disciplines to do similar challenges. He reached out to us in May of 2022, when he had a little less than 500,000 subscribers to do a Krav Maga challenge. Warriors Den Host and Lead UTKM instructor Jonathan Fader convinced him to do a true 24 hour Military Krav Maga Bootcamp challenge which he accepted and we filmed in June of 2022. We all had a blast filming it but words cannot do justice so you will just have to watch the video. Hafu Go's Channel About Section states "People who subscribe to this channel are driven visionaries. Our motto is "GO BEYOND." I want to liberate you from the limitations of your own mind. Subscribe and join the Go Gang if you want to join us in bettering the world." In this episode, we discuss Hafu's Journey on Youtube, Life, and even do a "Directors Cut" breakdown of the video. When Nina Cataldo moved back to Japan after finishing college she was surprised to find that even though she considered it her “motherland”, having grown up in Tokyo, she was seen as an outsider. This set her on the path to creating a community for women who identify as Hafu (mixed-race Japanese person) called “Hafu Women”. A proud Hafu herself, Nina advocates and educates for recognition and the fair treatment of marginalized communities in Japan. Nina is someone making waves and following her passions, so I just knew I had to interview her to find out more about her ikigai. Japan is often called a homogenous society, with Japanese people comprising 99% of the population. The issue of racial identity has been a powerful undercurrent in Japanese society throughout the nation's history, but it wasn't until the dawn of the digital age that these issues came to the forefront. Nina Cataldo is a half-American half-Japanese communications specialist based in Tokyo who created Hafu Ladies, an online support group for "Hafu" (Half) Japanese women to connect and share their experiences. Nina has been instrumental in spreading awareness of the complex issues surrounding race in Japan, and she joins the podcast for a wide-ranging conversation about life as a Hafu Lady. Introducing Nina Cataldo, legend of Community Building & The Hafu Ladies Community! Nina was born into a family that treasures internationalism and was raised in a bi-cultural and bilingual household. Raised between Tokyo and America's beautiful Pacific Northwest, she used her passion for words and storytelling as a powerful tool to connect people with the world. In this Podcast Nina shares with us so much rich information about her experience as a Japanese and American citizen and the experience of being both and moving between those worlds. The tale of her parents' meeting and their quick and surprise marriage and what being an only child means to her. Also just how their continued love and support is central in her life. The lines of artists and journalists in the family and how that has influenced Nina. How international her family is and the deep connection the US family has to Japan, then how she managed her move to the States aged 8 and her schooling, her transition through school, how she found the people who were 'like' her in school and university. I have a breakdown hearing how she used to write stories about the class rats PG and Snowball (rodent disco anyone?) in the USA. The great influence on of her teacher, Ms. Monroe and another champion had on her and how that encouragement was the fuel to her fire and how she pays that forward to be an amazing mentor other people, both the upcoming generations and reverse mentors people like me. She takes us through her school and university years in the USA and how she vowed never to come back to Tokyo after a visit, then came back here for one year to follow up on an opportunity. 5 years ago. Joining the dots backward - she notes that the subjects she chose at school actually support and inform a lot of her work today. Bizarrely - she was too Japanese for the Japanese society but she stays optimistic and moving forward at all times. Her first boss in Japan had a really healthy attitude to work-life balance and she brings some of his style of leadership and life cultivation into her leadership now. Nina took a huge leap of faith and took a Peaceboat Voyage back on September 2019, she explains all about Peaceboat and her experience and what it is like to sail on a ship for 4 months. In September 2018 she saw a gap in what she wanted in the Hafu (mixed race Japanese) community in Japan and started Hafu ladies, at first a brunch club. This group has grown to 900 women and Nina has full embraced the 3 pillars of the community: Educate, Empower, Embrace. And 'Fake it til you make it' or what that means to her. Nina has been educating in cross-race and culture matters with a leading news agency in Japan, hoping to educate in ways to do less harm to people of mixed race or different races. At the end of this conversation there is some background noise as Nina is at a place that has in indoor skateboard ramp! Huge thanks to inspiring Nina for sharing her background, her first 27 years and giving us a taster of the future. It's exciting - cannot wait to see what happens next. Continuing our theme from last week, we look at the history and present-day connotations of “hafu,” a Japanese word used to describe some half-Japanese people. Becky and Cedric trace the origins of the word back to the 6th century and share their ideas about the similarities between the mixed-race experience in Korea and Japan today.

Love the World! Dual nationality has been in the news lately. The professional tennis player, Naomi Osaka is about to reach her 22nd birthday, when she will have to decide (by Japanese law) which citizenship to have, Japanese or American. We have a very interesting, albeit sensitive, conversation about mixed race issues, citizenship, and national identity. Enjoy!Conversation highlights:A little chit chat on what the hosts have been up to.Naomi Osaka has to decide between US and Japanese citizenship by her 22nd birthday. From the age of 22 onward, Japanese nationals cannot have more than one citizenship, unlike some countries such as the UK and the US.However, even though this is law in Japan, it has never been officially enforced, so many residents do have dual citizenship. An example story of someone being informed, at immigration, of having dual citizenship yet was not forced to choose one. This shows how relaxed Japan is on this law.“Hafu” or mixed-race Japanese people are not accepted as being Japanese.A half Iranian half Bolivian 16 year old, born and raised in Japan has been threatened with deportation because he is not considered a Japanese citizen by “jus sanguinis” (right of blood), instead is classed as a foreigner overstaying his visa.Mixed-race Japanese who have lived all their lives in Japan, but may not look Japanese face discrimination.Does Burke get treated differently in Japan as someone who is half Japanese and half American?Does Ben get mistaken for being Japanese and does he feel more accepted because of his Asian heritage? The hosts discuss the difficulty for foreigners to make friends with Japanese people and the reasons why. When have our hosts felt the most immersed into Japanese society?Do the hosts feel that they have been accepted into Japanese society?Being a foreigner in Japan feels special because of the (mostly positive) treatment and attention they receive. Some Japanese who have lived overseas, once they return to Japan, struggle to adapt to Japanese society.Word of the day (proverb): Ichi-go ichi-eWebsite:http://podcast.voicesinjapan.comFollow us and check out our other content:https://twitter.com/voicesinjapanhttps://www.facebook.com/voicesinjapan/https://www.instagram.com/voicesinjapan/Get in touch: voicesinjapan@gmail.com

Miku shares her stories and thoughts on her international life experiences, how Hawaii is the melting pot of the world and what “Hafu” means. Language: English, Engelska, Inglés.
Featuring Lena Mikale of Hapa Bruja Lena and I spent some time navigating our cultures of Hapa and Hafu. We talked of what it means to tend to both sides, and how they each provide a different place for us to anchor into. We navigate her ancestry of way finding, find depth in the waters of the soul, and once again call upon the Emperor from a place of the embodied masculine. Not to be isolated and pushed aside, but integrated and held. These past weeks, I have been engaging in a challenge around White Supremacy. This challenge, #meandwhitesupremacy has opened by eyes to the narrative that continues throughout my daily life and the ways I am complicit in racial bias. I urge anyone, especially white identifying folx to check this out. I will post a link to more information in the show resources and again in my newsletter. Love the World! Here we go! Finally another episode of the most inconsistent relaunch in podcast history. But it’s all good as I talk about the documentary Hafu and read a poem to honor Mandela’s passing without properly explaining why I’m reading said poem. It was the poem that gave him strength while he was imprisoned. Takes two … Continue reading "Episode 73 – Ha! F U Hafu"

Japan has a reputation as being a homogenous society with very little in the way of multiculturalism, at times even going so far as to proudly proclaim themselves as mono-ethnic. However this is slowly changing as the number of mixed race people living in Japan grows with an estimated one in thirty babies born in Japan today are being born to a couple where at least one parent is not Japanese. On this show I talk to Lara Perez Takagi and Megumi Nishikura who are making a documentary film about the lives of five half Japanese or 'Hafus' living in Japan. For some being a mixed race person living in Japan has posed no problems but others have struggled to find their own identity and even going to far as to hide their non Japanese side.
