In 1965 an actress, dancer and singer accepted a small role in a new science fiction TV drama. Her expectations for the show were understandably low. But Lt. Uhura became the defining role her long career. The Regular Joes pay tribute to the life and legacy of Nichelle Nichols who broke barriers, changed minds, inspired countless people, and looked damned fine in a mini skirt. Having given most everyone else time to catch up, the Joes also review two recent teen centric dramas. First up Ms. Marvel from Disney Plus, which both introduces Kamala Khan and her world to the MCU and sets the stage for the upcoming Captain Marvel sequel. After that it's back to Hawkins Indiana for the wrap up of season four of Stranger Things. While most people are either nostalgic about, or totally wish to forget their high school years, few have had experiences quite like Dustin, Eleven, Jonathon, Lucas, Max, Mike, Nancy, Robin, Steve, Will, and Eddie. Who you're going to ask to the dance kind of seems trivial compared to demons, portals to the underworld, and the other seemingly unimaginable horrors they just keep running into. In spite of it all, could the most implausible thing be that most of these kids are still supposed to be in ninth grade? Thanks for listening!

This week we find the Enterprise crew on their way to Torona IV to meet the Jarada, an insect-like race that follows very strict protocols. This trip is to re-establish contact with the Jarada after a disastrous first contact 20 years prior. Captain Picard, under immense stress while preparing for this meeting, spends sometime on the Holodeck in an attempt to relax. Picard is joined by Lt. Commander Data, Dr Crusher and Ship's Historian Dr. Whalen, but instead of finding relaxation, they find themselves in a perilous situation. Meanwhile, on the bridge, the Jarada are insulted by Riker's attempt at contact and the crew tries to figure out exactly what they should do in order to avoid a repeat of the first Jarada contact. Will the Holodeck revelers survive the program? Will Riker avoid another Jarada incident? Will Wesley come in to save the day....again?!? “How do I talk with my more conservative friends and family?” is the number one question I get asked on this show. It's also something I've thought a lot about, because I have a LOT of conservative friends and family! While my batting record is far from 1.000, I've had some successes here and there. Today I talk with a former Trump supporter and disillusioned right leaning individual from South Carolina, who has a lot of questions, like… how can I trust the democrats will do any better? Why should I care about policies for people worse off than me when I don't feel secure myself? What if helping others makes me fear that I'll be worse off? Let's see if I can build some bridges and common ground and try to get us on the same page, or at least reading from the same book! Props to BJ for being willing to come on the show and have the conversation! Also, if you want even more 3RT, check out my recent appearance on the Hippy Dippy Roundtable! We discussed killing the filibuster, the threat of white supremacist groups, diversity training, wealth taxes, and the cancellation of Pepe Le Pew with a panel of people ranging from arch-conservatives all the way to commie! From the Commodore's Personal Log: On January 11, 2016, the REFIT of Standard Orbit took to the airwaves with a new sound, a new crew and a new mission starting with Episode 111: Hailing Frequencies Open. Feedback from the Fans and The Babel Conference. When the Standard Orbit “Refit” Crew began our shakedown voyage aboard the Trek.fm network on January 11, 2016, one of the tenants of our podcasting team for Trek.fm was to ensure that we - Norman C. Lao, Jeffrey Harlan and Ken Tripp - upheld the level of quality and content standards that the listeners of Standard Orbit and Trek.fm have come to expect from the incredible groundwork set by former hosts Drew Stewart and Mike Schindler. Theirs were large shoes to fill and the Refit Team had a daunting task to reach a bar that had been previously set so high with 110 shows. Nearly four months and 14 episodes later, the Refit Team just wanted to check in with all of our supporters and listeners to see if we have settled into a nice and steady cruising speed. The Chief (Ken), Mr. AtoZ (Jeffrey) and I have a great deal of fantastic content planned for the future. But, we also want to keep all of our listeners and Red Shirts engaged in the show that is crafted for you. We have loved every second that we have brought you in these first few months and there is a great road ahead to BEYOND and STLV50! Essential Season Three TOS. In this episode of Standard Orbit, we continue our coverage from Episode 120; delving deeply into Season Three with a more finely tuned eye and critical perspective. When it comes to ranking the "best" episodes of The Original Series, there are Top Ten lists ... and there are TOP TEN lists. Essential Season One TOS. There are Top Ten lists ... and there are TOP TEN lists. This episode of Standard Orbit is about the latter. Standard Orbit: A Star Trek Original Series Podcast

The Commodores of The Original Series. Several episodes in The Original Series introduced a few high-ranking and "intrusive" characters that shared one commonality: the rank of Commodore. From the Ahab-esque Matt Decker in The Doomsday Machine, to Robert Wesley who was in charge of the M-5 Multitronic System proceedings in The Ultimate Computer, to Commodore Stone who moderated the legal proceedings in Court Martial and several more; the Commodores were an authoritative, bureaucratic and at times overbearing extension of Starfleet Command. The Commodores added an additional layer of dramatic effect in The Original Series as they were usually at odds with Captain Kirk, Mr, Spock and the ongoing Five Year Mission of the U.S.S. Enterprise. They were akin to the overbearing and controlling "authority figure" that Kirk, Spock and others had to struggle against and overcome; a dynamic to which many younger viewers in the late 1960's related. In the end, the Commodore rank never extended past The Original Series save a few minor references in Star Trek: The Next Generation. The Enterprise Incident Commentary. As a follow-up to Standard Orbit 116: The Real Enemy Is War Itself, The "Refit" Crew wanted to take a look at the only other episode in the entirety of the 79 of The Original Series that featured the Romulans. We also wanted to do something a little unorthodox for this podcast. We are doing a "live commentary" of The Enterprise Incident–a very polished and exciting episode from Season Three and what we felt was the perfect compliment and a fantastic continuation of the Romulans and their alluring mystique that began with Season One's Balance of Terror. Please note that we will be commenting specifically on the HD remastered version and several of our comments address the amazing quality of the visual effects and overall production of The Enterprise Incident. If you are listening to this show in your car, or commuting to work or school, this probably won't make that much sense to you, unless of course you have this particular episode committed to memory. We hope you take the time and opportunity to sync up your rewatch of The Enterprise Incident with our commentary to accompany you. Enjoy! How The Enemy Below Influenced Balance of Terror. The Enemy Below tells the story of the epic "cat and mouse" game between an American Destroyer Escort Captain and the commander of a German U-boat. This 1957 World War Two classic film directly influenced Star Trek writer Paul Schneider as he crafted the narrative for what would become one of Star Trek's greatest episodes. Balance of Terror was a ground-breaking episode for Star Trek, as it brought a "military" essence to Starfleet and allowed the audience to grasp the political tapestry of The United Federation of Planets in the 23rd Century. Balance of Terror is a fan favorite for many reasons: the introduction of the Romulans, the humanizing of the enemy, and the application of sound naval tactics to help drive the narrative tensions. It was also famous for its bold decision to break yet another convention of the time: Women serving in combat. Almost 30 years later after this episode was produced, women were finally allowed to serve on warships. In addition, the military does not normally allow married couples on the same vessel for fear of that couple being killed outright in combat as almost seen with Robert Tomlinson and Angela Martine. Dissecting Spock's Brain. On this episode of Standard Orbit, we prep for surgery and perform a deep dissection and examination of what Star Trek fans have labeled as the "worst" episode ever in the history of The Original Series, and was even parodied as a stage production in 2004 for a limited run in Irvine, California at the Irvine Improv! William Shatner, in his autobiography Up Till Now, and in his memoirs Star Trek: Memories, called this one of the series' worst episodes; a "tribute" to NBC executives who slashed the show's budget and placed it in a bad time slot. There was a great deal of unrest happening behind the scenes at the beginning of Star Trek's third season. Gene Coon was trying to complete his writing contract and director Marc Daniels felt marginalized by executive producer Fred Freiberger. The show budget was always under pressure which in turn forced co-producer Robert Justman and Fred Freiberger to constantly redirect creative to fit production, increasing tensions between them and the NBC front offices. Did these underlying forces ultimately affect the return The Original Series on September 20th, 1968? Hosts Norman C. Lao and Jeffrey Harlan Guest Ken Tripp Production C Bryan Jones (Executive Producer), Norman C. Standard Orbit: A Star Trek Original Series Podcast

What's Past Is Prologue. Nostalgia is perhaps one of the most powerful forces that influences our lives. The Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary’s second definition of Nostalgia describes it as being “a wistful or excessively sentimental yearning for return to or of some past period or irrecoverable condition; also: something that evokes Nostalgia.” In today’s world of recycled Hollywood content, reboots, refreshes and retellings - has the entertainment industry created a rift in Star Trek fandom, to the point where preserving the "glory days" is the only way for some fans to move forward? In this episode of Standard Orbit, hosts Norman C. Lao and Jeffrey Harlan are joined by Portal 47’s Larry Nemecek and Mission Log’s John Champion. They take a deep and concerned look at the power of Nostalgia and its undeniable influence over fandom's appreciation for Star Trek; specifically The Original Series, and share their observations towards Nostalgia as it continues to influence the interpretation of perhaps the greatest of Star Trek's tenants: IDIC - Infinite Diversity through Infinite Combinations.
