This week we find the Enterprise in the middle of a dilemma. After receiving SOS's from two planets, one with a no technology and one with an advanced society, but both with problems that cannot seemingly be solved the crew must figure out how to best resolve this new dilemma. Through a series of awkward events, conversations and accidents Captain Picard finally comes up with a plan that will benefit all involved and get the guests off the Enterprise for good. Will the Irish takeover the Enterprise? Can a chicken fly? Does Worf have a childhood illness? Will Pulaski survive drinking poisonous tea? Can Riker wash feet? Will you laugh while watching this? This week we find the Enterprise missing two crew members. Captain Picard and acting Ensign Crusher make there way to Starbase 515, Wesley for his Starfleet Academy Entrance Exam and Captain Picard for a medical procedure that Dr Pulaski ensures him he's put off for too long. Wesley, not looking forward to spending several long hours alone with the Captain, is nervous and awkward while Captain Picard (who simply wants to read his book) is equally awkward and somewhat irritated. Meanwhile, back on the ship, the crew responds to a distress call from a ship crewed by the Pakleds, a not particularly intelligent race of beings. The Pakleds are in over there heads with their vessel which contains technology from various species none of which the Pakleds know how to operate. The Enterprises crew's efforts to help lead in a kidnapping and mind games which leave them all shaken and Captain Picard on the verge of death. Will Wesley and Picard make it to the Starbase without embarrassment? Can Geordi repair the damaged Pakled ship? Is Captain Picard tired of Dr. Pulaski? What is the deadly Crimson force field? This week we find the crew of the Enterprise happily galivanting through the Galaxy until the Captain is kidnap and held hostage by his own friend Q. Meanwhile, back on the Enterprise, no one knows Picard is gone and Geordi is trying to counsel an Ensign new to the crew. Once returned to the Enterprise Q confesses that he's been kicked out of the continuum and asks to be made part of the crew, stating that they need him because they aren't prepared for what's coming. When not given the answer he wants Q propels the ship deeper in the galaxy where they stumble upon a ship of unknown origin, what ensues will haunt not only the Enterprise but the entire Federation for years to come. Will the Enterprise survive Q's meddling? Will the new Ensign make a good impression on the Captain? Is Guinan psychic? Can Q ever truly be trusted? What is this new threat to the Federation? This week we find the crew of the Enterprise investigating planetary breakups in the Selcundi Drema Sector. After discussions with the Senior staff Riker assigns Wesley Crusher to lead this investigation. Meanwhile, Data is attempting to increase the frequency range of the ship's sensors, and in doing so, has made contact with a child from one of the planets in the system. Though they try to carry on like Data has not been contacted, the crew must intervene when the child asks for help. Can Wesley effectively lead a team of people? Will Data be reprimanded for his actions? Does Troi know how to ride a horse? Does Data kidnap a child? Do they figure out how to stop the planetary breakups? This week the crew of the Enterprise are making their way to Starbase Montgomery where they will pick up a Civilian Strategic Attaché, who will brief Commander Riker on his new assignment as Captain of the Aries. Upon arrival we learn that the Attaché is not someone Riker expects and is unhappy about encountering. Meanwhile, Wesley notices that Worf is not acting his usual self and becomes increasingly worried about his friend, though no one else seems to be. With these two separate issues arising plus La Forge being bent out of shape by criticisms from the Montgomery's analysis crew things on the Enterprise aren't looking so great this week. Will Riker leave the Enterprise? Will he fight an old man? Can Wesley figure out what's bothering Worf? Is Pulaski destined to become Riker's stepmother? Is Worf lonely? Can we get some pain sticks? This week the crew of the Enterprise find a shuttlecraft drifting through space, the only problem is this particular shuttle is sitting in the Enterprise's own shuttle bay. Upon bring the drifting shuttle aboard the mystery deepens when Captain Picard is discovered inside, but is it the real Picard, a double or a creature pretending to be the Captain? As the crew tries to sort it all out they find themselves in danger as a whirlpool in space opens up threatening to pull the ship in. Can crew figure out where and when the shuttlecraft and Picard double came from? Will they be able to prevent the Enterprise from being pulled in to the Whirlpool? Will Picard not only have a lengthy conversation with, but also kill himself? Can Riker cook? Do the writers continue in vain to make us like Pulaski? This week we once again meet up with our old friends from the Original Series in The Final Frontier. Everyone, except Scotty and Uhura, are wandering through Yosemite on a much earned vacation when a distress call comes in from Starfleet. Spock's brother has taken hostages and thinks he's found god, all he needs is a Starship to get him to the center of the universe. Will they make it to the center of the universe? Will they save the hostages? Does Uhura do a sexy song and dance in order to distract a group of vigilantes? Do we have to sit through a ludicrous sequence watching Kirk free climb El Capitan? This week the crew of the Enterprise stumble across a mysterious involving a piece of space debris, an inhospitable planet and a structure on said planet. Riker, Data and Worf beam down to find that the structure is a Las Vegas Hotel and Casino filled with people all of whom seem to be trapped inside. The raging storm outside makes communication with the Enterprise almost impossible leaving them not only trapped in the structure, but all stuck on the planet. What is this hotel really? How will they get themselves out of it? Will Data cheat at craps? Does Worf figure out how to get on an elevator? Do they witness a murder but fail to act? This week we find the Enterprise crew battling technical issues after meeting up with their sister ship that experienced, and subsequently was destroyed by, the same issues. The Enterprise, now stuck in the neutral zone, must contend with the technical issues, a Romulan warbird and the mystery of a lost ancient civilization. Will the Enterprise solve the problems prior to being destroyed? Will this trek into the neutral zone cause a war? Can they find this lost civilization? Will Data go blind? Can Picard save them all? This week we find the Enterprise crew transporting a young woman and her companion to the planet she was born to rule. This week we dive back into the films with The Voyage Home. The Earth finds itself threatened by a huge cylindrical probe which is set to destroy earth and everything around it. Only one ship and crew can figure out why the probe is there and how to fix it. The Ship, the Enterprise...the fix, time travel! The Enterprise crew finds themselves in 1980's San Francisco where they not only have to repair the Enterprise but also have to capture what the alien probe seeks, whales. Will the crew be able to find and secure the whales? Will they be able to precure parts and repair the Enterprise? Will they kidnap a woman Kirk is interested in and bring her into the future? This week we find the Enterprise crew racing to the aid of a Federation supply ship, but arriving to find the entire crew dead. This leads the Enterprise into a mystery that brings them to the last place the supply ship stopped, a Genetic Research Station. Upon arrival its learned that the Scientists housed at the station are also suffering from this mystery illness, but not all of the stations inhabitants dying. Now, Doctor Pulaski and Data must solve this mystery before time runs out. Will the mystery virus infect the Enterprise crew? Will Dr. Pulaski's curiosity be her undoing? Will Data be roped into another situation he didn't cause? Will Pulaski and Picard stopping fighting long enough to make any type of decision? This week the Enterprise crew comes to the rescue of a reclusive scientist and his young assistant. The scientist reveals that he help Data's creator complete his android project and intrigues Data with his knowledge and general storytelling. He also, seeks to change Data for selfish reasons. Will the crew be able to rescue the scientist? Will Data gain a Grandpa? Will Riker find a new love interest or have to fight Picard for her or will Data win her heart in the end? This week the crew of the Enterprise find themselves escorting a famous peace negotiator to his next talks. In the process Counselor Troi finds herself in a new romantic situation while the rest of the crew find the negotiator and his aides fascinating. This week the Enterprise crew come upon a cargo ship in need of repair, it's sole crew member turns out to be more than anyone expected. This guest brings trouble, romance and frustration (for Riker) with him, he also causes Data to try to learn how to be funny. Because of him the Enterprise finds itself in the middle of two warring Father's hellbent on seeing him either married or put to death, a matter which Captain Picard has to solve. All in all it's a slow day for the Enterprise crew. Will Data become a genius comedian? Will Riker see all the single women stolen from him? Will war erupt over a stolen jewel and a pregnant teen? This week we find the crew of the Enterprise waiting to rendezvous with another Federation ship that's 3 days out. While they wait Data and Geordi decide to have an adventure on the holodeck as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, respectively. At first the adventure is short lived, but with a push from Dr. Pulaski the computer creates a foe that even Data cannot defeat. Will Data smoke a pipe while Geordi hangs on his every word? Will Pulaski be saved from tea and crumpets? Will the Captain out wit Professor Moriarty and will we find out that Geordi is an excellent craftsman? This week the Enterprise crew stumbles upon a freighter suffering critical malfunctions and quickly steps in to save the day. The guests are from two neighboring planets one, who's population suffers from plague and the other who's population are seemingly thriving. This week we find the crew of the Enterprise on a rescue mission on the planet Minos. The USS Drake is missing near the planet, which was previously inhabited by renowned arms dealers. The mission goes sideways as the away team is attacked, Riker trapped and their rescuers, Picard and Dr Crusher, fall down a hole in the ground. Meanwhile, on the Enterprise, LaForge is doing his best while trying to keep the crew focused and the Enterprise from being blown out of space. This week the Enterprise finds itself in the middle of a Klingon scheme which not only puts the crew in danger, but also challenges Lt Worf's loyalty. This week we find the Enterprise crew on their way to Torona IV to meet the Jarada, an insect-like race that follows very strict protocols. This trip is to re-establish contact with the Jarada after a disastrous first contact 20 years prior. Captain Picard, under immense stress while preparing for this meeting, spends sometime on the Holodeck in an attempt to relax. Picard is joined by Lt. Commander Data, Dr Crusher and Ship's Historian Dr. Whalen, but instead of finding relaxation, they find themselves in a perilous situation. Meanwhile, on the bridge, the Jarada are insulted by Riker's attempt at contact and the crew tries to figure out exactly what they should do in order to avoid a repeat of the first Jarada contact. Will the Holodeck revelers survive the program? Will Riker avoid another Jarada incident? Will Wesley come in to save the day....again?!? "Dix" is a film-noir-esque detective from 1930s San Francisco (the city destined to become the headquarters of Starfleet... coincidence? I THINK NOT!) Like everything on the Holodeck (*tm *c *r) things go horribly awry and we question the very nature of our existence. Get ready to boldly go into this weeks episode - THE BIG GOODBYE!!!

Arranged marriages, galactic plagues, and the Hall of Wyatts... Oh My! In this week's episode, the Hailing Frequencies Open crew tackles the season 1 epidsode: Haven! We explore the deep cultural heritage of the Betazoids and their practice of arranging... and forgetting about arranging... marriages. But nobody puts Troi in a corner, not even her mom! And of course, things heat up between the families aboard for the joyous occasion. Mix in the space plague, and we've got ourselves an episode! Boldly go!

Buckle up kiddos! We're going to Sexy Fun Time Planet! This week, the HFO crew is joined by Tim O'Donnell to talk about "Justice". The Edo are a fun-loving race of child-like horn dogs who make love at the drop of a hat... ANY hat. But beneath this veneer of sensual utopia, there is a dangerous system of law keeping it all in balance. When Wesley gets involved, you KNOW there's going to be trouble. And with the Prime Directive being more of a guideline at this point in the series, the Enterprise crew may have a few tricks up their sleeves to figure this one out! Boldly Go!

ENGINEERING REPORT: Due to interference from a temporal anomaly, this episode is being released on the wrong star date. Back to our regularly scheduled hailing frequency patterns next time! In LONELY AMONG US, the Enterprise is visited by a strange entity as it passes through a strange nebula on an urgent delegation mission. The crew is possessed one after the other, and one of the crew is accidentally killed? No worries, with a secondary plot line that far outshines the main plot (I mean, werewolf-dog-monkeys chasing down snake people through the decks of the Enterprise?!? C'mon! That's gold!) this episode is ripe for the picking, our the intrepid crew of Hailing Frequencies Open will do their best to guide you through, with or without blue lightning!

This week, the HFO crew boldly go where no one has gone before... because, well, that's the title of this episode. We find our intrepid crew performing some "upgrades" to the warp drive. Wesley meets the Traveler, and d-bag Kosinski eats a heaping helping of humble pie. Will the Enterprise make it back from the far reaches of space in time for Picard to tell Wesley to ride shotgun on the bridge? Will the Traveler ever return? Will Kosinski ever shut up? This week the HFO crew is all about finding the Ferengi! As the Enterprise-D crew is in pursuit of a Ferengi ship with stolen Federation goods, they encounter an energy-draining planet from a long-dead empire. Suspicions arise from both Starfleet and Ferengi sides, until an unexpected guest arrives and confronts the away teams who are already at each others throats, quite literally. What will the HFO crew have to say about this particular mission report? Mostly stuff about space dildos and bad makeup.

The HFO crew has one of their toughest missions yet! Season 1 Episode 3 - Code of Honor is largely regarded as one of the worst TNG episodes of the series... Will our intrepid crew manage to wade through the not-so-subtle racist overtones and anti-feminist tropes around every corner? Will they laugh in the face of danger? Will they tell dad jokes? Will they impersonate Picard quite poorly? Find out and boldly go!

The crew of HFO are back and more naked than ever! In Episode 2, they encounter S1E2: THE NAKED NOW, and its going to their heads. While the Enterprise is observing a collapsing star, the away team encounters a science vessel where things have gone horribly and inexplicably wrong. Eventually the crew begins to show signs of a strange intoxication and Wesley has control of the ship? When the Standard Orbit “Refit” Crew began our shakedown voyage aboard the Trek.fm network on January 11, 2016, one of the tenants of our podcasting team for Trek.fm was to ensure that we - Norman C. From the Ahab-esque Matt Decker in The Doomsday Machine, to Robert Wesley who was in charge of the M-5 Multitronic System proceedings in The Ultimate Computer, to Commodore Stone who moderated the legal proceedings in Court Martial and several more; the Commodores were an authoritative, bureaucratic and at times overbearing extension of Starfleet Command. The Commodores added an additional layer of dramatic effect in The Original Series as they were usually at odds with Captain Kirk, Mr, Spock and the ongoing Five Year Mission of the U.S.S. Enterprise. They were akin to the overbearing and controlling "authority figure" that Kirk, Spock and others had to struggle against and overcome; a dynamic to which many younger viewers in the late 1960's related. In the end, the Commodore rank never extended past The Original Series save a few minor references in Star Trek: The Next Generation. The Enterprise Incident Commentary. As a follow-up to Standard Orbit 116: The Real Enemy Is War Itself, The "Refit" Crew wanted to take a look at the only other episode in the entirety of the 79 of The Original Series that featured the Romulans. How The Enemy Below Influenced Balance of Terror. The Enemy Below tells the story of the epic "cat and mouse" game between an American Destroyer Escort Captain and the commander of a German U-boat. This 1957 World War Two classic film directly influenced Star Trek writer Paul Schneider as he crafted the narrative for what would become one of Star Trek's greatest episodes. Balance of Terror was a ground-breaking episode for Star Trek, as it brought a "military" essence to Starfleet and allowed the audience to grasp the political tapestry of The United Federation of Planets in the 23rd Century. Balance of Terror is a fan favorite for many reasons: the introduction of the Romulans, the humanizing of the enemy, and the application of sound naval tactics to help drive the narrative tensions. It was also famous for its bold decision to break yet another convention of the time: Women serving in combat. Almost 30 years later after this episode was produced, women were finally allowed to serve on warships. In addition, the military does not normally allow married couples on the same vessel for fear of that couple being killed outright in combat as almost seen with Robert Tomlinson and Angela Martine. Dissecting Spock's Brain. On this episode of Standard Orbit, we prep for surgery and perform a deep dissection and examination of what Star Trek fans have labeled as the "worst" episode ever in the history of The Original Series, and was even parodied as a stage production in 2004 for a limited run in Irvine, California at the Irvine Improv! William Shatner, in his autobiography Up Till Now, and in his memoirs Star Trek: Memories, called this one of the series' worst episodes; a "tribute" to NBC executives who slashed the show's budget and placed it in a bad time slot. There was a great deal of unrest happening behind the scenes at the beginning of Star Trek's third season. Gene Coon was trying to complete his writing contract and director Marc Daniels felt marginalized by executive producer Fred Freiberger. The show budget was always under pressure which in turn forced co-producer Robert Justman and Fred Freiberger to constantly redirect creative to fit production, increasing tensions between them and the NBC front offices.
