The complexities of EV battery technology are getting more and more... well... complex. But, while attributes like range, longevity, durability and chemistry tend to get much of the limelight, there's one aspect of EV battery R&D that sits in the background without getting the fanfare it rightly deserves: Testing."As the battery is becoming more and more important as the propulsion energy storage system, there's a lot of testing and a lot of validation that needs to be done," says Don Wright, Unico vice president of engineering. "Those tests are very demanding, and as the battery packs start to change and we're getting into higher voltages and higher powers, the test equipment that goes along with it needs to change as well. This is where we're starting to see the transition to much higher power systems and higher voltages for our test equipment; we even have battery pack test systems that go up to 2,000-3,000 volts for very large applications."On this episode of The Amped EV Podcast, Wright highlights the importance of adapting test equipment to accommodate emerging trends, expectations and new business possibilities regarding the future of battery-swapping technology, and what we know about the integration of solid-state batteries in EVs. The Buzz: www.thebuzzevnews.com

Her influence and advocacy for more diversity at NASA sparked new interest in space travel and helped to recruit brilliant STEM talents like Dr. Sally Ride, Colonel Guion Bluford, and Mae Jemison.SYNOPSIS: While Jonathan and Mr. Redge are at the Once Upon a Time Con, they come across an artist booth called Deep Space Drawings by Deanna. They meet Deanna, who is a fan of Star Trek and has created artwork inspired by the series. They share Nichelle Nichols story and her role as Lieutenant Nyota Uhura and how it was one of the first non-stereotypical portrayals of a Black woman on television. They also talk about how Martin Luther King Jr. convinced Nichelle Nichols to stay on the show because of the positive impact her character had on the civil rights movement. Besides her role as Uhura, Nichelle Nichols also created new interest in space exploration and opened the doors of opportunity for more people of color to work at NASA. Impressed by Deanna's art and inspired by the story of Nichelle Nichols, Redge decides to purchase some of Deanna's paintings. Throughout her career, she conducted 72 submersible dives, led more than 200 field expeditions, and pioneered the practice of underwater research through scuba diving. She cared deeply for sharks, swimming among them (and riding on the back of a 50-foot whale shark) in order to understand their behaviors. Check out @huggersveg on Instagram and his podcast on itunes, titled "Woke Stutters." Some of AJ's accomplishments include: He starved himself for 9 days to protest the killing of zoo animals in front of the Seoul mayor's house. And won! He worked undercover in the Korean dog fighting syndicate. He worked undercover in the exotic animal trade. He worked undercover in the Korean dog meat industry. He has worked undercover in multiple factory farms all over the USA. One case in Wisconsin was responsible for Nestle (the worlds largest food company!) implementing the most comprehensive and far-reaching animal welfare reform in all of human history. This reform includes...an end to the practices of tail docking and dehorning of dairy cattle, an end to the castration of piglets without painkillers, the phaseout of growth promoters for poultry, ending the intensive confinement of baby calves in veal crates, pregnant pigs in gestation crates, and egg-laying hens in battery cages. Literally billions of lives have been touched by AJ's work. He is the 2015 recipient of Mercy For Animals' Hidden Hero award. He is the president of CARE, the biggest Animal Rights group in Korea. “When you start winning, people start paying attention.” The MindSide Podcast struck gold this week as we brought on the star of the Netflix documentary, Last Chance U, founder of 10 Thousand Pencils, and nationwide inspiration leader, Brittany Wagner. Wagner has made a dent in the world of college athletics as she has turned her dream of impacting young athletes into a reality. In the show, Last Chance U, Brittany helped the football team of East Mississippi Community College become more than just a group of jocks who had no future other than football, "I had no expectations." Coming from a family with a psychologist as a father and a special education teacher as a mother, Brittany knew from her youth that she had a greater purpose. "This is what I was born to do." Inside this podcast, Wagner digs into the realities young athletes are faced with every day. She discusses how most college athletes are already given labels based on stereotypical judgement from their peers and even some authority figures. "These labels we place on these kids prohibits them from really figuring out their potential on their own." There is an underlining issue that is raised when these athletes are already told what path they "should" or "need" to go on to reach a society's definition of success. "I think we do a horrible job helping these athletes navigate the pressure of being a college athlete." Brittany compares a college football player's situation in Scuba, Mississippi, to a hypothetical situation where she is the one putting on the football gear in the locker room and then getting tackled on the field and feeling that shame and public humiliation that these kids must feel in the classroom. "They are unequipped." Wagner brings her own opinions on the educational deficiencies that these college athletes must climb past to reach success outside of the game. “We can teach them how to be true to themselves.” Brittany has started her own company, 10 Thousand Pencils to provide academic counseling services to student athletes everywhere. Antennas are at the very heart of our wirelessly connected world. Technology advances have completely miniaturized and concealed them to the point that people tend to forget that they exist! Antenna research is hotter than ever with applications like wearable and embroidered antennas which give birth to terms like “functional fashion”, more efficient energy harvesting which enables inductive powering in more situations and the study and analysis of specific absorption rates (SAR) which are directly related to the effect of wireless devices on our health. Dr Will Whittow, Senior Lecturer in Electronic Materials Integration at Loughborough University, talks about the current challenges being addressed and some of the ground breaking research that takes place in the field of antenna technologies. Interviewed by George Voulgaris for Tech Talks central.
