Send us a textWe're revisiting an episode from the early days of Dorktales Storytime as we get ready for the launch of Season 6 with brand-new tales and adventures on February 6th! “The Three Little Hogs” was the very first fairy tale we told when the podcast began in 2020. It's where you'll meet the three hedgehog brothers—Percy, Porky, and Peregrin—and encounter the Big Bad Wolf before he had a change of heart. Relive the beginnings of Jonathan and Redge's budding friendship before they set off on their storytelling journey together. The Three Little…HOGS? Who's heard of that? According to Mr. Reginald T. Hedgehog, our Dorktales sidekick, it's a classic tale from the fairy tale cannon! Come hear our storyteller recount the story of hedgehogs Porky, Percy and Peregrin, and their ultimate triumph over the dastardly wolf using a glue pot, rapier and a wheel barrow. According to Percy, “It's epic, man!”Go to the episode webpage: https://jonincharacter.com/dorktales-three-little-hogs/ HEY GROWNUPS: Sign up to receive our podcast newsletter every two weeks and you'll receive FREE access to our Dorktales Storytime Podcast's Resource Library filled with activity guides, conversation starter PDFs, printables and more: https://dorktalesstorytime.aweb.page/Dorktales-Library-Card CREDITS: This episode is a Jonincharacter production. Send us a textAs we prepare for the exciting launch of Season 6 of Dorktales Storytime on February 6th, we're revisiting some favorite past adventures. Ever wondered how Jonathan found the magical doorway into Once Upon a Time or met his storytelling best friend, Reginald T. Hedgehog? This is the backstory to all our Dorktales adventures. This also answers the question our listener friend, Jose, asked about how Jonathan can go between Once Upon a Time and the real world. On an otherwise normal day, a portal opens in a mysterious tree hidden in the very corners of a California redwood forest. Jonathan walks through the trunk and tumbles into the mystical, magical land of Once Upon a Time. Mr. Reginald T. Hedgehog, who's out on his daily walk around his hovel, encounters this lost human. The two discover their kinship and begin their quest to bring joy and understanding to others through stories. As the sun sets behind the Cliffhanger mountains, they set sail across the Fantasea in pursuit of their first storytelling adventures!Go to the episode webpage: https://jonincharacter.com/the-magical-doorwayHEY GROWNUPS: Sign up to receive our podcast newsletter every two weeks and you'll receive FREE access to our Dorktales Storytime Podcast's Resource Library filled with activity guides, conversation starter PDFs, printables and more: https://dorktalesstorytime.aweb.page/Dorktales-Library-Card CREDITS: This episode is a Jonincharacter production. There's a serious problem in the community garden! The beloved apple tree is in a sad state, and Redge worries there won't be apples for snacking, pie baking and cider making in the fall. Abracadabra! Alakazam! In swoops Zinnia Fig riding on a cluster of wild onions to declare the tree is experiencing the dreaded DROOP. Can the Folktale Forest's favorite hedge witch use her practical earthly magic to cast out its doldrums and bring on the blooms?Episode webpage: https://jonincharacter.com/zinnia-fig-and-the-droop/ SUMMARY: Jonathan and Redge are enjoying a beautiful day in the community garden. They notice the apple tree, which should be blooming already, doesn't look happy so they call upon Zinnia Fig, the Folktale Forest's hedge witch, who says the tree is experiencing a sad state known as “The Droop.” Zinnia explains that sometimes trees need to feel their way through sadness and offers support and encouragement to the tree. They fertilize the ground and speak kind words to the tree, which starts to show signs of improvement. The flowers on the tree begin to bloom again, and Zinnia assures them that with care, the tree will fully recover. Grateful for Zinnia's help, Jonathan and Redge express their appreciation, and Zinnia performs a final incantation to bring joy to their day.PARENTS, TEACHERS, HOMESCHOOLERS: Overall, the story promotes themes of friendship, patience, positivity, acceptance, collaboration, and a deep appreciation for the beauty of nature. Welcome to Redge's K.N.I.G.H.T. School, the Knowledgeably Noble Institution for Gallant Hero Training! Here Hedge Knights in training discover their own inner powers, cultivate their courage, celebrate everyone as they are, defend the realm from darkness, and BRAVELY bring about the light. Young Archie doubts he has the right stuff, afraid that he will never be worthy enough to take such a hedge pledge. He's ready to leap when he learns that he already possesses exemplary knighthood qualities—a kind heart, the curiosity to learn, and the power of his own story! This episode includes the song, Firefly Light, an anthem to our own heroic journeys and the importance of our communities and the stories we share together. SPECIAL MESSAGE FOR PARENTS AND EDUCATORS: In our stories, we incorporate empowering messages and lessons for kids, especially those who are being marginalized and misunderstood. This is an important episode for our team because both of the voice actors are on the autism spectrum—one who is a seasoned professional and the other who is just beginning his acting career. They embody the themes in this story: to be yourself, share your gifts, empower others, and brave your fears to bring about the light. They are working together to find their places in a world that doesn't always accept those who are different. Rude! Ill-mannered! Uh oh! After only one night of their visit, Mr. Redge declares that his cozy, country inn experience is over for his city cousin, Rodge. It seems that these two are set on squabbling instead of enjoying their time together. Does Rodge really feel superior because he lives in Litropia and not the Folktale Forest? See how this tale of competing and comparisons turns into acts of mutual appreciation.PARENTS, TEACHERS AND HOMESCHOOLERS: This story was inspired by Aesop's fable, “The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse.” The narrative illustrates how easy it is to make the wrong assumptions about someone else's behavior, and how we can envy what others have instead of appreciating all the good things in our own lives. Be gracious and grateful instead of judgmental and resentful. The princess from Mythdom breaks all fairy tale stereotypes when she tells the story that her time in the tower was for scientific innovation and experimentation. Her patented, three-step, hair strengthening system could win her a STEM scholarship! Can she shimmy down the tower's trellis and make her way through the peat bog path to get to the science fair in time? “Poppycock, nonsense and hedge-hogwash!” declares Mr. Redge when he learns winter is responsible for all the cold white stuff making his wallaby friend's toes and tail freeze. Before emotions heat up to a high degree, the magical weather pixie known as Jack Frost pops in to share what's so cool about the chilly season. Can he ultimately prove to the Folktale Forest's creatures that there's no business like snow business?PARENTS, TEACHERS AND HOMESCHOOLERS: This story was inspired by the tale of Jack Frost, a personification of frost, ice, snow, sleet, and winter. The story points out the many reasons to enjoy winter—from special activities indoors and out—and how you can appreciate the gifts that each season brings.Episode webpage: https://jonincharacter.com/a-winters-tail/ Dorktales Storytime Podcast website: https://jonincharacter.com/dorktales-storytime-podcast/SPECIAL THANKS: Our chill Jack Frost is performed by Kyle Elliot, a professional voice over talent: https://www.kyleelliot.comCREDITS: This episode has been a Jonincharacter production. ‘Tis the season of good cheer and you, dear listeners, are our reason to be merry! Once Upon a Times' traditional hedgehog holiday has almost begun—but before the festivities commence, Mr. Redge has invited the Folktale Forest's Society of Bards and Balladeers to give you a glimpse into the magic of Jolly Holly Day. So, with narrative expressions of joy and great glee they present the poem, 'Twas a Night Most Jolly Holly. PARENTS, TEACHERS AND HOMESCHOOLERS: This episode was inspired by “Twas the Night Before Christmas,” to describe a holiday tradition from our imaginative land of Once Upon a Time. It demonstrates another important form of storytelling: the narrative poem. Poetry is a form of self-expression and it helps us understand and appreciate the world around us. After tumbling down the rabbit hole, Alice and Mr. Redge find themselves smack dab in the middle of the Queen of Hearts kingdom. Seeing her subjects so forlorn over her majesty's ill-temper, the two concoct a clever croquet challenge to rid her of her crotchety ways. Can the queen learn their lesson of cooperation and good sportsmanship, or will she command that everyone go, OFF TO THEIR BEDS?!PARENTS, TEACHERS AND HOMESCHOOLERS: This is a reimagined story based on “The Queen's Croquet Ground” chapter in the classic, “Alice in Wonderland” story. The queen's behavior demonstrates constant demands for perfection and poor sportsmanship. In the end, she learns lessons in cooperation, teamwork, and finding better ways of working with others. As soon as the leaves fall, you'll find the Folktale Forest hedgehogs collecting and turning them into maple leaf medals. Now, Jonathan and Mr. Redge are adding to this honored tradition by celebrating the unique talents of all their forest friends. Come and hear their razzle-dazzling awards show with dancing trios, wonderful wordsmiths, astonishing acrobats, and one famous rooster who cockadoodle-doesn't miss a beat! It's aliiiive!! Deep in the Foreshadow, the ever-dark lands of Once Upon a Time, lived Hogenstein, the infamous warthog scientist who invented “It's Alive No. 5!” Using this freaky formula, a lightning rod and a fierce thunderstorm, he and his loyal lab assistant, Lugo the bat, brought a super creature to life. Muahahaha! But wait…that's not what's so terrifying about this tale—the scariest part is when the creature goes out into the world alone to face his fears.PARENTS, TEACHERS AND HOMESCHOOLERS: This is our reimagining of the classic, “Frankenstein,” where facing one's fears is scarier than a spooky story. In our version, the creature goes out into the world on his own, tries things he has never tried before, and has the courage to never give up. He kept trying his best, even when the townspeople judged him before he had the chance to show them his big heart. There's tension in the Folktale Forest! Two friends clash over blueprints for Midge the Pidge's new birdhouse. As their issues begin to spiral out of control, they learn the legend of Pecos Bill – the rootinest-tootinest, roughest, toughest cowboy who tamed a tumultuous tornado and created the Grand Canyon. Yippee-ki-yay! The tall tale ultimately calms their chaos and carves a path towards a cordial compromise. PARENTS, TEACHERS AND HOMESCHOOLERS: This is our reimagining of the classic tall tale, “Pecos Bill and the Tornado.” In the story, two friends are working on a project and tensions build when they disagree. When both are unwilling to bend, their problem begins to spiral out of control into a much bigger issue. The larger-than-life tall tale teaches them the value of partnership, communication and meeting each other halfway. We're so happy to be bringing you a story that Mr. Eric told along with our friend Jonathan Cormur on his podcast, Dorktales Storytime. Normally, we replay an old favorite once a month, so I hope you all enjoy this rare treat! Dorktales Storytime, hosted by voice actor Jonathan Cormur, is a podcast featuring slightly wacky and very geeky retellings of classic fairy tales with social-emotional lessons and the untold stories about the hidden heroes of history. The Story: It's the perfect day for pure play! Sherlock Nettlesbee, the great deducing squirrel detective, joins Jonathan and Mr. Redge in an afternoon of imagination and good old-fashioned make believe. When their cloud gazing doesn't cut it, Sherlock declares that “the Improv Game is afoot!” Can the trio find inspiration from Mary and her little lamb, Lula? Yes and…they're sure to find a whole-lotta playful, floofy fun everywhere they go! PARENTS, TEACHERS AND HOMESCHOOLERS: This story is about making time for imaginary play! Improvisation, or improv, is when you make up a story, or a scene, or a little bit of music on the spot. The ‘Yes And' game is when you listen to another person in your improv scene and agree with what they are saying—that's the ‘yes' part—and you use your own ideas to build on their thoughts—that's the ‘and' part. It's entertaining and very fun, plus it also encourages listening skills, collaboration and cooperation. Join Jonathan, Redge, and Big Bad as they learn how to understand one another, and huff and puff their stress away. PARENTS, TEACHERS AND HOMESCHOOLERS: Recognizing overwhelming feelings is one of the first steps towards feeling better and managing stress. Will these best bro buddies help each other to safety when the bear barrels towards them in full bluster? Or will one have to learn a righteous lesson about who he can truly count on when things get tough?PARENTS, TEACHERS AND HOMESCHOOLERS: This is our reimagining of the Aesop fable, “The Two Travelers and a Bear.” The theme of this story is “What is a true friend?” Good friends don't just care about themselves. A story of diving, discovery, and the Shark Lady! Fascinated by marine life as a child, Eugenie Clark grew to become a leading ichthyologist and changed the way scientists study ocean life. Throughout her career, she conducted 72 submersible dives, led more than 200 field expeditions, and pioneered the practice of underwater research through scuba diving. She cared deeply for sharks, swimming among them (and riding on the back of a 50-foot whale shark) in order to understand their behaviors. She inspired the public's curiosity, awe, and wonder, turning the tides on what we thought we knew about these misunderstood ocean creatures. Harumph! Why is a new neighbor making Mr. Redge's quills stand on end? Maybe his outlook will change after hearing the story of the pompous peacock who struts his fine feathers while prejudging the friendly crane. Will he connect with the crane's advice to stay open minded, or will he stand firm with his first fowl impression? PARENTS, TEACHERS AND HOMESCHOOLERS: This is our reimagining of the fable, “The Peacock and the Crane.” Seeing past the surface is the lesson of this story. Sometimes we tell ourselves that our value is only skin deep and it makes us feel insecure. We can also be too quick to cast judgments on others before we get to know them. It's character that matters. A seafaring tale of daring do in a long dress and petticoats! At the young age of 15, Ida Lewis helped her father with his lighthouse keeper's duties on Lime Rock. She grew to become the small island's sole keeper responsible for protecting and guiding ships to safe harbor. Throughout her life, Ida fearlessly rowed her small skiff out in rough storms and icy waters to rescue people (and a sheep). She became famous after saving two drowning soldiers in a snowstorm and was named, “the bravest woman in America.” But the lighthouse, not the limelight, was where Ida Lewis found her lifelong happiness. “Question everything!” That's Rapunzel's motto. PARENTS, TEACHERS AND HOMESCHOOLERS:This is our reimagining of the fairy tale “Rapunzel.” The character, Rapunzel, breaks traditional princess stereotypes, demonstrating a passion for STEM, especially science and invention. It's the Folktale Forest's annual Diamond Pitch Pennant! Mr. Redge is upset that his team, the Woodland Wonders, lost their first game. He's sure that he alone is the reason his team is known as the understory underdogs. It takes the tale of one parched yet patient hedgehog with a brilliant idea to prove to him that his one, two, three strikes you're out experience is why he's the team's M.A.C (Most Awesome Critter)! PARENTS, TEACHERS AND HOMESCHOOLERS:This is our reimagining of the fable “The Crow and the Pitcher.” It's a story about creative problem solving that leads to the understanding that success comes from practicing and building your skills step by step (or stone by stone according to the fable). After worrying that the forest creatures don't respect him, Mr. Wolf exits his cave at sunset and is surprised by his new fearsome and formidable shadow. Feeling large and in charge for the first time, he struts about declaring he's now the forest's fiercest foe! It takes the setting sun and one small sparrow to break his illusion, and help him realize he's already admired for being his authentic ol' softy self.PARENTS, TEACHERS AND HOMESCHOOLERS: This is our retelling of the fable “The Wolf and His Shadow” with a self-acceptance message. The lesson is that your worth is not measured by your outward appearances, so you don't need to pretend to be someone you're not so others will like and respect you. In this episode, we hear from Jonathan Cormur, host and storyteller of the Dorktales Storytime Podcast. Travel back in time to listen to “The Dorktales Broadcasting System” radio broadcast about the life of Hedy Lamarr! Who knew that Hollywood’s famous film star from the 1930s and 40s was one of the most brilliant minds of her time? Adored by the public as “the most beautiful woman in the world,” Hedy Lamarr’s real talent was technological innovation and invention—from light up dog collars and updated stop lights to aircraft wing design. Her crowning achievement—frequency-hopping—is what makes cell phones, GPS, Bluetooth and wi-fi networks possible. After you listen, we’ll challenge you to use your imagination in an activity inspired by Hedy Lamarr’s curiosity and passion for invention. Now let’s listen to the story and learn more about this amazing hero of history!
