The conversation is rich with insights and personal anecdotes, making it a compelling listen for anyone interested in the intersections of faith, culture, and personal growth. In this conversation, Janice Lagata shares her journey from moving to New York and joining Hillsong to her struggles with church culture, identity, and the impact of purity culture. She reflects on her experiences within a male-dominated evangelical space, the expectations placed on women, and the burden of not having a personal testimony. Janice discusses her eventual departure from Hillsong, seeking healthier communities, and the complexities of serving in church environments that demand much while often perpetuating shame. In this conversation, the speakers delve into the complexities of faith, race, and the intersections of capitalism and evangelicalism. They explore the trials of personal transformation, the cultural discrepancies faced by people of color in faith communities, and the problematic nature of church planting. The discussion also highlights the spiritual capitalism inherent in evangelicalism and the stagnation observed in deconstruction spaces, ultimately questioning the authenticity of new leadership dynamics. In this conversation, Laura Anderson and Janice Lagata explore the complexities of leaving evangelicalism, addressing themes such as embodied fundamentalism, the impact of capitalism, the challenges of grifting, and the role of privilege in ex-vangelical spaces. They emphasize the importance of personal responsibility, community, and self-trust in the deconstruction journey, while also recognizing the need for diverse voices and perspectives in these discussions. To connect with Janice, check out her website: https://janicelagata.com/ –from there you can join her Patreon, Substack, and hear about the other cool projects and offerings she has! This podcast is brought to you by the Center for Trauma Resolution and Recovery: an online trauma coaching company whose practitioners are trauma informed and trauma trained to work with individuals, couples and families who have experienced high control religion, cults, and religious trauma. Her work consistently laces themes of race, religion and gender with threads of witty wordplay and hopeful skepticism. In her capacity as an “exvangelical” person, she is known for being a vocal critic of evangelical megachurch culture in general and the hillsong brand specifically because she believes (almost) everyone involved deserves better. You've seen (hopefully) The Secrets of Hillsong. You lamented how it centered Carl Lentz cosplaying Zoolander at his "corporate" job (That wasn't just me, right?). And you were introduced to Janice Lagata, if you didn't already know her work. So forget Carl and listen to Janice tell her story of attending Hillsong "College" in Australia and being part of the beginning of Hillsong NYC. More importantly, listen to her talk about getting out and moving on. Janice's podcasts, God Has Not Given, and Bad Words, are great resources for all of us moving on from evangelical faith. In this video I talk to my new friend Rachel about the first two episodes of the new Hulu and FX docuseries The Secrets of Hillsong. Rachel attended Hillsong college back in 2000 and 2001 and was in her second year as Carl entered his first. In addition to sharing her feelings on the docuseries, Rachel shares how she and others felt about Carl Lentz before Brian Houston and Hillsong elevated him to the level of celebrity pastor. I appreciate Rachel so much for being willing to share her thoughts. We believe it's important for people to have access to all sides of this story and be aware of the risks of being in a church with Carl Lentz strategizing or speaking in any way. Hillsong and Carl Lentz still have a lot to answer for, and we hope this story brings a little more light to the story. Don't forget to follow me on TikTok and Instagram @the.cassiemarie. I LOVE hearing your thoughts on these episodes and would love this to turn into an even bigger discussion. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/intothecultiverse/support

Jesse is a queer, non-binary actor and performer. They learned to sing, and fell in love with performance, in the Pentecostal Church as a kid and after school they studied songwriting for two years at Hillsong College. Jesse knew they were queer all that time but knew they couldn't come out and live authentically if they wanted to remain in the church. Dan connects with former Hillsong Boston volunteer, Noemi Uribe, who shares her personal pursuit of healing, change, and identity outside of Hillsong. Dan's journey then takes him to the controversial Hillsong College, which was recently forced to relocate its campus from Phoenix, Arizona to Orange County, California. Joined by former Hillsong College students Bailey Krawczyk and Joe Sanders, Dan makes a discovery that suggests Hillsong's own pronouncement of systemic change may be a facade.Watch Hillsong: A Megachurch Exposed on discovery+. GRACE IS BACK! and she's telling it like it is. We sat down to kick off recording Grace's own history with Hillsong and thought we'd go over some updates. She'd had a few chats with some insiders and has taken the liberty of sharing news with us all. We discuss the recent Hillsong conference, or what's left of it, and Hillsong College or what's left of it, and it's going to take until the end of episode 2 before I get Grace to tell us exactly nearly her Hillsong background. So pull up a chair, or come hang over the back fence and let's talk!
You'll enjoy part 2 of my interview with my friend, Curtis Honeycutt.Curtis is one of the most interesting individuals that I've ever met. He's super outgoing and an idea-a-minute yet he's an introvert (I relate to the introverversion). His upbringing was both good and horrible. His best friend stuggled with cancer and someone shot his brother. He sought riches then found Jesus. He attended Hillsong College in Sydney where he met his future wife. They traveled the U.S. attempting to support hurting pastors. Then they planted a church that's into multiplication. Today he serves as Leadership Development Pastor with a thriving network of churches. The guy is a reader and amatuer historian. This promises to be an interesting interview. Given that 90% of Hillsong College students in Australia are international, it's kinda important to know how those students are treated and what the actual education is like. Yolandi Bosch found out when after saving up, she applied to Hillsong College to further her skills and her relationship with God. What she found was she had paid to be part of an entertainment machine, where students were graded according to their marketability, and if they had none, they paid to be rejected. Far from home, seriously ill at one stage and forced to volunteer with a fever, Yolandi describes the place that had seemed so appealing and so godly.
We talk Hillsong history, theology, and music with insider and scholar Dr. Tanya Riches. The basis of our conversation is her recent co-edited volume (with Tom Wagner) The Hillsong Movement Examined: You Call me Out Upon the Waters (Charis, 2017).
