In this episode, Xavier Bonilla has a dialogue with Peter Bellwood about the five million year history of humans. They discuss the genera and species of humans and the different types of humans that lived together at the same time, genes from early human species, and the four acts of human history. They talk about Hominins arising out of the Miocene, distinct features of Australopithecus, humans in the Pleistocene, Homo Erectus walking out of Africa, Homo Floresiensis, and Neanderthals. They discuss domestication and cultivation of plants and animals in the Holocene, rice and corn in the Fertile Crescent and in China, Maize in the Western Hemisphere, Anatolian hypothesis for languages, and many other topics. Peter Bellwood is Emeritus Professor in archaeology at Australian National University. He has his PhD from Kings College-Cambridge. His research areas have focused on population migrations during prehistory eras and the spread of Austronesian languages. He is the author of numerous books, including his most recent book, The Five-Million-Year Odyssey: The Human Journey from Ape to Agriculture. This is the final episode of 2023. And it is an odd episode. My guest is Gregory Forth. He is an anthropologist who specializes in the biological theories of indigenous peoples. Forth was doing this work on the Flores Island, Indonesia, during the 2003 discovery of a new hominin species: Homo floresiensis. This was an exciting discovery for many. But Forth was, in his own words, "gobsmacked". In his own studies, Forth had been puzzling over a species the local people called lai ho'a, a creature that was not quite human and not quite monkey. It was something in between. According to the local people, the lai ho'a live deep in the local rainforest. They are difficult to see. But people do see one occasionally. They are about a meter in height, just as Homo floresiensis. And they walk on two legs – a feature that separates humans from other mammals. So what should we make of all of this? Could Homo floresiensis, or its descendants, still be alive? Or is this just another fantasy in the realm of cryptozoology? And what would it be like to encounter a species that is half human, half ape? What rights would they get? How would it challenge our ideas about "humanity"? This is my attempt at making sense of this peculiar case. I hope you enjoy it! READ MORE To read the full story in detail, I highly recommend Forth's book, Between an Ape and Human: An Anthropologist on the Trail of a Hidden Hominoid. This week Drew takes us through the Arthur Conan Doyle saga with the fairies, and how he fell for hoaxed photographs....but we also read some of Doyle's writings on the subject of fae encounters, and they seem entirely rational. We then spend some time reading and discussing the topic of Homo Floresiensis, also known as the "hobbits" of the island of Flores. There are tales of encounters with "little people" that persist on this island to this day, despite the fact that the fossil evidence of these "hobbit" people is at least 12,000 years old, and perhaps as old as 50,000 years. We then move on to tales from Japan, with very similar themes, trickster beings that can be beneficial as long as the humans interacting with them abide by their word.   We will be performing at Howl at the Holler for the annular Eclipse on October the 14th, see the link for details: https://howlattheholler.com/ The Lebanon extension for our upcoming Egypt trip in February has a pre-extension, see the link for details: https://unchartedx.com/site/2023/09/28/feb-24-lebanon-tour-baalbek-still-available-now-with-8-day-jordan-option/   Thanks to all of you who support the show with donations and through Patreon. Both amazing and confusing experts in equal measure since it's discovery more than a decade ago - have we been able to learn anything new in recent years? In this episode Tristan is joined by leading paleoanthropologist Dr Adam Brumm from Griffith University in Australia. Becoming Bani Adam: Exploring Twelver-Shii Discussions on Human Ancestry - Mizan Institute

This episode discusses the alleged timeline of Prophet Adam (a) and various pieces of evidence including evidence in the fossil record, the Qur'an, and hadith. There are two plausible timelines for where to place Adam in history and the first is that is he existed more than 200,000 years ago and was the first of the Homo sapiens species. The second, and arguably more like possibility is that he existed 10-12,000 years ago. While exploring lines of evidence for human evolution, we will focus on explanations for the fossil record, and both scriptural and anthropological evidence that may help us navigate these two possibilities.
