Why Every UFO Experiencer Said YES | Dean Alioto InterviewToday on Lehto Files, filmmaker Dean Alioto joins me to discuss the blurred lines between fiction and reality in the UFO world. Known for The McPherson Tape—a found-footage film that was mistaken for real alien abduction footage—Dean shares deep insights into how experiencers process trauma, why they wouldn't change their encounters, and what the media gets wrong about UAPs.

It all started 10 years earlier in 1989 with The McPherson Tape (aka U.F.O Abduction), which was lost to the world until it suddenly resurfaced within the UFO-tracking community as purportedly genuine evidence of a family's alien encounter (it's not). Once TV news organizations got ahold of it 5 years later, director Dean Alioto was tasked with remaking it for Dick Clark Productions. It's this 1998 version - just a year ahead of The Blair Witch Project - which showed on TV and fooled a generation of young viewers with some of their first exposure ever to found footage horror. We ended up discussing both over Thanksgiving turkey this year. Dig into yours and enjoy this week's find along with us!
We talk about this obscure alien invasion found footage film!
This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, presented by The Prince Charles Cinema, our hosts Jonathan Foster and Fil Freitas are having a nice Thanksgiving dinner when all of a sudden they see a bright flash of light, and the power goes out. They go outside to investigate, and to their surprise, they witness three aliens outside a spaceship performing a cattle mutilation. When they try to get them to be on the podcast, the aliens shoot at them with laser beams, and chase down Jon and Fil inside their house, looking for a way to get in. Will Jon and Fil survive this close encounter? It's week 2 of I WANT TO BELIEVE, our Spooky Ooky alien season, and we are talking about two films in one bite-sized episode with Dean Alioto's 1989 found-footage cult film, UFO ABDUCTION aka THE McPHERSON TAPE, and the 1998 made-for-TV remake, ALIEN ABDUCTION : INCIDENT IN LAKE COUNTY aka THE McPHERSON TAPE. Yes, they are both confusingly referred to as "The McPherson Tape".A huge inspiration on found footage films like The Blair Witch Project, these two strange pieces of media had many believing they were watching real footage of a family being hunted down by space aliens. Tune in to hear a crazy story of DIY filmmaking, genius marketing, a bunch of lies and conspiracies, as we tackle this film that had a young Jonathan terrified of little grey men for years..."Oh man. You know what I think I peed my pants... pans the camera down... Oh I did, I PEED MY PANTS! IM LOSING IT HERE I PEED MY PANTS, MAN! WHAT'S UP WITH THAT!"If you enjoy the podcast, leave a Rating and Review! Today’s guest is Dean Alioto, writer and director of the groundbreaking found footage horror film UFO ABDUCTION, which also became known as THE MCPHERSON TAPE. The film tells the story of a family whose house is surrounded by alien creatures one night, and while the panicked people inside the house become more and more frightened and try to deal with the situation, a family members records the entire event with a 1980’s-style home video camera. Dean made the film on a shoestring budget in 1989 while he was in his mid-Twenties, and while there have been several found footage and… The post #35: “It's Good to Be Ahead of Your Time, But Not a Decade”: Director Dean Alioto on Pioneering Found Footage Film UFO ABDUCTION appeared first on Talking Pictures.

Jamison and Blake start their second October episode with a rousing philosophical analysis of the word "spoop" and then we turn our attention to our favorite holidays. Mostly we are avoiding talking about The McPherson Tape because while it nails the found footage aesthetic, it falls flat on its face when it comes to scares and effects. We discuss the shift from footage with context to footage decontextualized for the audience and we pick apart what that shift is so fascinating. It's a fun (and, for us, mercifully short) episode! We hope you will join us. Clip from Mars Attacks. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/flybyfilms/message
Bring a bucket and a mop... for this UAP. This week, Cody and Matt search the skies for the first potential American found-footage horror movie. They discuss simple and effective storytelling, groundbreaking techniques in the beloved horror sub-genre, and the mysterious tale of how this movie gained its cult status. The boys also discuss alien smoke breaks, the acceptable amount of knowledge someone should have when it comes to repairing a roof, and drunken grandmothers that really make a party pop.Lock those doors and be weary of mind control and thanks for listening!Instagram/Twitter: @nighthowlspod

Ben & Rob grab their tinfoil hats and scan the skies for ‘The McPherson Tape'; a 90's bootleg that convinced thousands that aliens were here to steal your daddies! Distributed almost entirely via home-copied VHS tapes among UFO enthusiasts and conspiracy obsessives, ‘The McPherson Tape' was the FIRST found-footage horror movie in the history of cinema, with it's director Dean Alioto stating he wanted “War Of The Worlds for the age of video”. But is this actual footage of real life aliens hastily covered up by the US Government? Are we in the final year of the government hiding their knowledge of UFO's thanks in part to David Grusch's disclosure? And where is Tom Delonge? Your hosts range widely and freely on the topic of horror: specifically, found footage horror. The films discussed are The McPherson Tape, The Blair Witch Project, Backrooms, and Horror in the High Desert.Watch The Backrooms short we talked about here on YouTube.Director Dean Alioto talked with the Found Footage Critic about UFO Abduction and Alien Abduction: Incident in Lake County, aka The McPherson Tape:In 1989 Dean Alioto shot his first film, UFO Abduction, for a meager budget of $6,500—the master copy of the film was subsequently destroyed and thus the movie was never widely released. Ten years later Dean Alioto pitched UFO Abduction to Dick Clark Productions, who picked up the idea and gave Dean Alioto a $1.2 million budget to shoot a remake for television. In 1998, the remake was released entitled Alien Abduction: Incident in Lake County (a.k.a. The McPherson Tape).Over the years the names of these films has resulted in a great deal of confusion. Even to this day, both UFO Abduction and Alien Abduction: Incident in Lake County are referred to as “The McPherson Tape.”Found Footage CriticAn explorer named Tom covered the tragic story of the Death Valley Germans at his blog, OtherHand. The team sits down with Joseph A. Ziemba & Annie Choi, the Creators behind BLEEDING SKULL!On January 4, 2004, Joseph A. Ziemba launched BLEEDING SKULL! with a simple intention: to share a passion for obscure genre films and honor the filmmakers behind them. Since then BLEEDING SKULL! has become the authority on cinematic dispatches from the fringes. FANGORIA called BLEEDING SKULL! “The go-to encyclopedia for trash, bizarre, and shot-on-video horror cinema,” while VICE referred to it as “like a fever dream glimpse into parallel worlds.” Years of uncovering and celebrating outsider films led to the publication of BLEEDING SKULL! Thoughts on the film The McPherson Tape (1989) Do ya like found footage? Episode 039
Today, we chatted with Dean Alioto Dean. He got his start dropping out of two film schools (San Francisco State University and the University of Southern California) to work on films for Steven Spielberg, Clint Eastwood, and Oliver Stone. After making his directing/writing debut with The McPherson Tape, Dean made the award-winning independent film Crashing Eden and direct episodic TV (Watch Over Me) and several ones and two-hour bio-docs on Billie The Kid, Jessie James, and Lizzie Borden. Come aboard, let's get weird!
This week we're joined by writer, director and cinematographer Ryan Glover! His latest film, the quietly haunting queer horror The Strings is playing on Shudder! This movie was Scarred for Life approved last year when it premiered at Salem Horror Fest and we're so happy that people are able to see it and that Ryan had time to sit down with us. We dig into his horror history, which Alien movie is his surprising second favorite, the days of Rent 7 at Blockbuster and the way the small budget led to some of The Strings' most haunting imagery. Then we dig into Alien Abduction: Incident in Lake County, the UPN made-for-TV remake of The McPherson Tape! We discuss the 90s interest in aliens, the way TV would market alien things as real (e.g., Alien Autopsy) and why Alien Abduction terrified Ryan growing up. We also discuss the surprising ways this movie set the tone for found footage films just a few years later...Follow Ryan on Twitter. Follow Mary Beth, Terry and the Podcast on Twitter. Guest, Dean Alioto discusses how he decided to take UFOlogy seriously when he truly realized there was something to it, and talks about how he looks at the phenomenon now, his journey along the way that all started from the McPherson Tape, the original "found footage" movie he crated in 1989. Callers with an encounter and one with an insight on nukes.Show Notes
This week we're taken over by the first of 3 consecutive guest hosts, Terrell Trotty. Clark joins the show in spirit while attending a depressing college basketball game in person. After checking in with David Lynch and going over another edition of the TBR Report, engineer Randy retreads The Sparks Brothers and calls it the only good Edgar Wright film that was released this year. Oksana gets the most air-time since covering Bloody Mary films. Terrell ain't afraid of no ghosts and enjoys the latest in the Ghostbusters franchise. He also expresses concern for a scene in the original film where Dan Ackroyd receives fellatio from a ghostly figure. Russell takes an autumnal journey to Tootz Pizza with The Pizzagate Massacre. What's the most convincing horror movie you've ever seen?Today on Cult Talks: Weird Shit, we are still at Bigfoot Ridge, but we've moved on from Grassman and Jim... kind of.Today's episode discusses fictional horror movies that were presented convincingly enough to fool people into thinking they were real.First, we talk about the genius (and a bit dickish) marketing of 1999's The Blair Witch Project, before we hear the tale of The McPherson Tape, a 1989 movie that is figuratively, and literally, found footage.Next, we take a look at BBC's epic fuck up in presenting Ghostwatch on Halloween night 1992, a pretty great supernatural horror movie that nearly perfectly imitated a live broadcast. And thus, a generation of English viewers were traumatized.Let's get weird.
It's Halloween season and the boys are back in town to review some of the scariest found footage(ish) films concerning alien abductions. Joining Ryan are TV/Film writer, Andrew Sanford, and Film/Stage actor, Nick Westemeyer to discuss the films below. Did they live up to the hype? Did they follow alien abduction lore? And most importantly... were they any good!? We also hear from cast and crew from several of the films and what their experiences were like working on them, and we hear from YOU, the viewers/listeners on your thoughts as well. It's a jam-packed movie review party of cosmic proportions. We also here from YOU, the listeners, about your thoughts on these films! Amateur Archaeologist & Weird Creature Expert Sarah Crosley is back on the show this week to say maybe the Bigfoots & the Hobbits of the world aren't just fantasy creatures...maybe they were & possibly still are real. The story of Ebu Gogo is one of those folkloric creatures come to life in the form of actual skeletal remains found in a cave on the island of Flores in Indonesia. Now, Homo Floresiensis is a part of the story of evolution on this planet, like it or not. It's time to start looking at these old folk tales as not only fun myths but actual historical accounts that were documented & kept alive in the oral tradition of storytelling. Andy Sell from Ghoul School: A Horror History Podcast joins me in a crossover episode to discuss the absolutely bonkers history behind the infamous McPherson Tape. The Original movie, called UFO Abduction, depicted a family in the throes of an alien abduction caught in real time on home video. Was it real? Was it a hoax? Was the US Government involved? The creative mastermind behind it all, Dean Alioto, tells his story often but will people accept it? Of course they won't! This little film would come to serve as a blueprint & lay a lot of groundwork for future found footage films of the same ilk, namely The Blair Witch Project & Cloverfield. Join us as we discuss not only the story behind the making of the film but all of the insanity that occured after it was made that led to the remake 10 years later...then all of the insanity that occured after that was made. This week on the show, Amy watched The McPherson Tapes and Kyle had a rough couple days and did not. But we still did a podcast and we actually do a pretty good job talking about how cool the movie is. But there is madness in the air. If you ever wished more horror podcasts had extended conversations about the merits of the song “wub nub” from the end of Return of the Jedi, then your incredibly specific prayers have been answered...
