Warum fällt es nur so schwer, etwas für unser Immunsystem zu tun, wenn es uns gerade gut geht? BEGRÜSSUNG Das Verschlafen eines Schlafpodcasts EURE FRAGEN Max fragt: Wow, eure letzte Folge. Von dem schubweisen Altern habe ich zum ersten Mal in eurer Sendung gehört. Mein Eindruck ist, dass viele Männer eher mit 55 einen Alltagsschub erleiden als mit 60. So zumindest meine Beobachtungen. Was ist hier eure Meinung hier? Franz fragt: Mit 30 konnte ich lange oder kurz schlafen, und ich habe mich immer gleich gefühlt. Seitdem ich über 35 bin, führt zu wenig Schlaf zu absoluter Abgespanntheit. Gleichzeitig fällt es mir immer schwerer, lange zu schlafen beziehungsweise morgens mal länger zu schlafen. Sind diese Veränderungen normal, beziehungsweise, hat dies etwas mit den besagten 34er-Schub zu tun? DAS THEMA DER WOCHE: Fit in den Herbst Genau in dieser frühherbstlichen Phase können wir uns optimal für den Winter vorbereiten. Zudem folgt jene Zeitumstellung, welche wir positiv für uns einsetzen können. “Controlling temperature is something that is overlooked and undervalued in sports and just in life,” explains Dr. Kyle Sela, physical therapist, strength coach and founder of AVA Cooling Technology, who returns to The Code to talk more about the many benefits of palmar cooling. Thermoregulation is the body's way of preventing heat-related injury. The hypothalamus sends local signals to the muscles in the form of fatigue, as well as systemic signals of adaptation and behavior modification to get us to stop moving. When the glabrous skin of the hands, feet and face, come in contact with a source of cooling such as the AVA anti-fatigue bar, the network of cells underneath to generously dump heat, allowing for, even encouraging, a longer workout at a maintained intensity.  This means performance-enhancing capabilities for athletes of all levels, as well as health benefits for a number of issues. As the days get shorter and the weather gets colder, the time comes once more for the biggest decision of the winter: Do you blanket your horse, or not? And, which one? (Heavy, medium, medium-light, neck or no neck?!)  Some riders put a sheet on at the slightest sign of a chill, while others keep their horses bare regardless of outside conditions. And of course, there are the temperature charts that pop up each year, which are meant to apply hard and fast rules to blanketing, but never actually seem to.  In this episode of Equestrian Voices, host Caroline Culbertson sits down with Dr. Michelle DeBoer of the University of Wisconsin, who has a PhD in Animal Science and whose research delves into this singular question of horse ownership.  In their extremely informative discussion, they discuss all things blanketing, and some of the ancillary topics blanketing invariably brings up, including: Thermoregulation, and how horses use it to keep themselves warm (and how clipping alters that process) Why thinking that if you're cold, then your horse is also cold, is incorrect How breeds, body size, and age should affect your blanketing choices Why a hot bran mash doesn't actually help keep our horses warm (though it does warm our hearts!) Atemwegserkrankungen sind häufig diagnostizierte Erkrankungen in der Tiermedizin. Bei Hunden insbesonders ein potentiell gefährlicher Lungenarterienwurm. Haustiere können wie wir auch Probleme mit den Atemwegen haben. Die bekannteste Atemwegserkrankungen bei Hunden sind wohl der Zwingerhusten und ein Lungenarterienwurm- bei Katzen der Katzenschnupfen. Gefährlicher Lungenwurm In der Schweiz stecken sich immer wieder Hunde mit dem gefährlichen Lungenwurm (Angiostrongylus vasorum) an. Überträger sind Schnecken, welche im Gras oder an Grashalmen kleben. Wenn Hunde Schnecken oder Gras fressen, können sie sich mit dem Lungenwurm anstecken. Gezüchtetes Atemproblem Bei kurznasigen Hunde-Rassen wie dem Mops oder einzelnen Bulldoggen verursachen anatomische und damit verknüpft funktionelle Probleme der oberen Atemwege Atemnot und eine gestörte Thermoregulation. Einige dieser Probleme lassen sich nur chirurgisch in Kombination mit einer Medikamentengabe behandeln.

Wie? Was? Schon ein halbes Jahr rum??? Schon 24 Folgen Tierisch! rausgehauen? Wie kann das denn sein?! Ist aber so. Und zur Feier unseres Staffelfinales haben wir mit einem Live-Event in Köln die Vielfalt des Tierreichs zelebriert. Es war ein sehr bunter Abend, an dem Schnaps verlost wurde, es tierische Rätselrunden, Science Slams und Live-Musik gab. Und natürlich haben wir die letzte Folge der ersten Staffel Tierisch! aufgezeichnet! Für diese Folge kramen wir in den Giftschränken unserer Forschung, denn: Bei Forschung in freier Wildbahn kann so einiges schief gehen. Transekte liegen statt im Pantanal in Grönland und enden nach 10 Metern in einem Blutsturz, Antilopen hören den Knall und lassen sich deshalb nicht betäuben, und in Fallen sitzt alles, aber nicht das Tier, das man eigentlich fangen wollte. Eine wissenschaftliche Studie zu konzipieren und durchzuführen ist ein kreativer Prozess. Unter anderem, weil in der Feldforschung oft alles anders kommt als gedacht, aber auch eigentlich ganz grundlegend. Man beginnt damit, sich eine Forschungsfrage zu überlegen, und dann wird eine Methodik entwickelt, mit der diese Frage beantwortet werden kann. Also – optimalerweise. Wenn nicht wieder alles schief geht. So wundern sich zum Beispiel die Bewohner eines Dorfes in der Elfenbeinküste darüber, dass der Klopapierkonsum der ohnehin schon dubiosen Forscher im nahegelegenen Nationalpark auf einmal eklatant in die Höhe schießt. Und dann wundern sie sich im weiteren Verlauf noch mehr über Termitenhügel, die plötzlich in rosa Toilettenpapier gehüllt in der Savanne stehen. Dabei handelt es sich hier um eine geniale Vermessungsmethode für Oberflächen aller Art! Hört rein, um unter anderem zu erfahren, warum Lydia in diesem Jahr mit dem Forscherauto durch eine Wand fuhr.
