Secretly Society presents a four-episode mini-series about friendship, music, and a story that is both heartbreaking and heartwarming alike - DeYarmond Edison. This series is narrated by the author, a friend of the band, and executive producer of the DeYarmond Edison official boxset 'Epoch', Grayson Haver Currin. This episode starts us off with DeYarmond Edison's move to Raleigh, North Carolina, a town with a buzzing music scene including the likes of The Rosebuds, Bowerbirds, and Ticonderoga. Hear the stories of the beginning of The Bickett Gallery Residency that at points was described as a "spiraling through concentric circles of disorder pushing the standard until it indeed almost broke". Joe brought in themes of improvisation learned at Bennington College, Phil taught the band Delta Blues and strings, Brad played with the idea of 20th-century ambient sounds in the style of Steve Reich's composition, and Justin challenged everyone's vocal capacity - including his own. The previously undisclosed story of the band that branched off into indie music legends, Megafaun and Bon Iver! Bowerbirds have been off the radar musically since 2012's The Clearing. Lots has changed for the B-Birds, which now centers solely around Phil Moore since his bandmate and former partner Beth Tacular has left to concentrate on her own artwork. 2021 sees a new Bowerbirds album, becalmyounglovers, and a new version of Phil himself. He writes to his fans “It's been 8 years since you've heard new Bowerbirds music and you and I have changed in ways that we couldn't have imagined back then.” Phil's intense connection to nature remains, as he has always been drawn to the outside world starting as a kid, going to college for biology and moving to North Carolina in 2005 for a job as a bird tracker. In our conversation, we probably spend way too much time talking about birds and birdwatching. I came to find a real appreciation for the activity hearing about it through Phil's experience and just might be inspired to pick up a field notebook and night vision monocular myself. It seems like a very calm and grounding experience, which can also be said for the music of Bowerbirds. There's also a deep dive into different kinds of anxiety that Phil experiences, which seems to be mostly logistical/non performance panic. He talks about different ways he understands and manages fear and anxiety. I also basically give him a lecture about how important his music is to people because it has meant so much and helped me through so much. Helping people has been one of Phil's main objectives for Bowerbirds and I'm here to tell him straight to his face that he's doing it. Now let's all go birding. Phil is so good. Thank you Phil. I would not want to put this on my head: A Victoria crowned pigeon, wearing a built-in fancy hat: A Victoria crowned pigeon baby. Such miniature floof: Show transcript: Welcome to Strange Animals Podcast. I’m your host, Kate Shaw. This week we are finally going to look at some birds of New Guinea, a topic suggested ages ago by M Is for Awesome! There are so many weird and amazing birds in New Guinea that instead of trying to talk about a bunch of them very briefly in one episode, I’m going to make this another ongoing series throughout the year. Every so often we’ll revisit New Guinea (in our minds, anyway) and learn about a few more birds. In this episode we’ll learn some basic information about New Guinea and then learn about two really interesting birds that live there. New Guinea comes up in lots of episodes because so many animals live there. It’s almost the world’s largest island, second only to Greenland. Australia is considered a continent, not an island. New Guinea is actually pretty close to Australia so there’s a lot of overlap between animals that live in Australia and animals that live in New Guinea. A big reason New Guinea has so many animals is its geography. It has everything from ridiculously high mountains with glaciers to lowland rainforests, savannas, wetlands, mangrove forests, rivers, lakes, alpine tundra, and coral reefs off the coast. About the only thing it doesn’t have is a desert. Most of the island is warm and humid with lots of rain. Of course people live in New Guinea too, and have for at least 40,000 years, possibly as long as 60,000 years. Back then, New Guinea was connected to Australia by a land bridge similar to the one that has connected North America with Asia when sea levels were low. Some of the earliest humans to migrate out of Africa settled in New Guinea, and the people there developed agriculture independently of the people who settled in the Middle East. More people arrived much later, only around 3,500 years ago, from parts of Asia. But because the land is so hard to navigate due to the mountains and rivers and so forth, people who moved to a new part of the island were largely isolated from the people in other parts. Some 7,000 languages are spoken on the island right up to the present day, with several hundred more languages once spoken. Unfortunately, as happens so often, after European explorers discovered the island in the 16th century, they decided they would like to have it for themselves. So they took it, which is just rude. The eastern half of the island is now independent as of 1975, called Papua New Guinea, while the western half, usually just called Papua, is now part of Indonesia. Indonesia is an Asian country and unfortunately, they’re being just as bad to the indigenous people of the area as Europeans were. There are still lots of places in New Guinea that scientists haven’t explored, mostly in the mountains, and undoubtedly lots and lots of animals and birds that are completely unknown to science. Some of the animals and birds of the mountains may never have been seen by any person at all. M specifically wanted us to cover bowerbirds, so let’s start with them. Bowerbirds live in Australia and New Guinea along with a few smaller islands, with twenty species known. You may have heard about them before, because a male bowerbird builds what’s called a bower and decorates it with items he selects to attract a female.

The Human Nature (HN) podcast features a series of 30 minute interviews with prominent persons, designed to mainstream natural history in such a way as to improve conservation outcomes. Each show has a single guest and is themed around an animal of their choice, in response to the question "If you could be any animal, which would you be?" The tone is consistently light-hearted and humourous, riffing off the fresh perspective gained by imagining life as another creature. The second part of each episode takes the form of a game show, whereby the guest competes against a choesn audience member on questions relating to their animal. In Episode 1, Elliot interviews Peter Rowland- Australian birdwatching guru, author and photographer- about his chosen animal, the bowerbird. He is challenged by Zac, Annabel and John for the quiz round. Who wins this tight-fought competition? Listen in to find out... Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Welcome to Burn, a post-apocalyptic game of danger, intrigue, and exploration! We start this episode by talking about passing out, then head into the irradiated Secret Military Research Facility in search of spoil. Along the way, our group gets lost, meets some pretty kitties, and finds some stuff, then heads back to the Caves where our Families live. Once inside, we Zoom Out to get a look at who all of the factions are within the Homeland and discuss how each of the four main player Families (The Shepherds, The Ripples, The Institute, and The Bowerbirds) react to the news that the Sun has indeed returned and is once again lighting the surface of the Earth. Also, is the Moon gone?REFERENCE SECTIONFollow us on Twitter:Nature Check: @CheckNatureJareth/GM: @maeamianSheryl/The Ripples/Islae: @RvingNaturalistPeter/Shepherds of the Cave/Charon: @petercoffeyJordan/The Institute/Lissa: @JordanBHarrodXander/The Bowerbirds/Ganymede: @ARTexplainsChannel art by Sheryl/The Roving Naturalist
