“It's going to be a challenge and yes, it's scary, but I know it's going to be a lot easier than being a race director. And I think it's important that runners know that and really appreciate race directors because it's a lot of hard work. And we're so lucky that there are so many races that we can now pick from.” - Susan Lowe-Wylde on running the Minotaur after directing it for many yearsSusan and Ian Lowe-Wylde own spry in Blairmore, Alberta, which is in the Crowsnest Pass region of Alberta. With Rocky Mountains on one side and prairie land on the other, the couple of 40 years love the variety of terrain in the region. They are always looking for adventure as they love being the ones that know the spots nobody else does. This passion and drive for the outdoors is a big reason why they love calling the Crowsnest Pass region home. They've witnessed a lot of change and growth over the years and their proud they've been part of that growth. The pass is becoming more and more popular with trail runners which has been good for their shop, and the fact they are so involved in the community means runners and outdoor enthusiasts get many opportunities to interact with them. Susan and Ian wanted to make a difference for runners and their downtown with spry, and they had to trust the process to get there. It wasn't easy in the beginning.“Our mindset is that, yeah, you know what? (The store's) probably not making money right now. We don't care. We're gonna make it great. So we just, we bought the right stuff and we did it the right way, even though there wasn't really a return on it for quite a few years. And I think now, now it is a really good, curated selection of stuff for running and, and hiking and climbing. And it's an interesting mix, it didn't just happen overnight.” - Ian Lowe-WlydeSusan and Ian were really fun to chat with. A couple that's been together for 40 years knows each other so well and it was fun getting their history from both of them. They're all about getting outdoors and sharing that love with others and we definitely benefit from having folks like this in our community! Business-as-usual will result in collapse of the global system midway through the 21st century. Professor Ian Lowe and Rod discuss how we might avert a looming crisis. Another report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) brings another round of disturbing news about the extent to which the globe continues to warm particularly as a result of the elevated emissions of the so-called green-house gases.  As long as we continue to rely on the burning of fossil fuels as our major source of energy, the greater impact we will have on the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere - and thus the continuation of the greenhouse effect. So what is to be done?   In this episode, our host Richard Bawden, welcomes back the distinguished scientist and commentator, emeritus professor Ian Lowe. With enviable clarity, Ian not only helps us understand the science, economics and politics at the heart of the matter, but explains in detail what we could do here in Australia about dramatically reducing our emission levels though technologies that are already well developed and in use in parts of the nation already.

“Sustainability and the New Economics: Synthesising Ecological Economics and Modern Monetary Theory” is a new book fresh off the print and on the shelves. It is an impressive volume containing chapters from a host of Australian game-changers including Michael Kirby, Ian Dunlop, Will Steffen and last episode's guest Ian Lowe. The book details sobering realities regarding business as usual economics, while offering many realistic and applicable solutions based around ecological economics and modern monetary theory. PGAP spoke with lead editor Stephen Williams to find out more about this impressive book, and why economics is front and foremost of the world's problems and why things need to change. Stephen Williams has a background in newspaper journalism and law. He began his journalism career at The Canberra Times in 2000 and subsequently specialised in environmental matters. His overarching interest is in designing sustainable societies. He believes mainstream economics can only provide a path to collapse. Did you know that climate mitigation models show that the only scenarios that avoid dangerous climate change are those which assume global population peaks in the next decade and then declines? Why is no-one talking about this? Luckily for us and the future of the planet, PGAP's two guests for this episode, Professor Ian Lowe and Doctor Jane O'Sullivan, have written a new discussion paper ‘Population and Climate Change.' Co-written with Doctor Peter Cook and commissioned by Sustainable Population Australia, this new report uses clear concise language with thorough scientific research to make a very strong case for the role that population plays in this warming world. PGAP speaks with Jane and Ian to unwrap the key points behind the discussion paper and to find out more about the stories behind these two inspiring people. The discussion paper ‘Population and Climate Change' can be downloaded from the Sustainable Population Australia website here (https://population.org.au/discussion-papers/climate/). You can find out more about SPA and their recent campaigns here (https://population.org.au/lets-rethink-big-australia/) and here (https://population.org.au/how-you-can-make-a-difference/). Ian was recently interviewed on ABC's Radio National Science Show on the ‘Population and Climate Change' discussion paper here (https://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/scienceshow/human-population-the-driver-of-greenhouse-emissions-and-all-env/13771554). Jane's interview can be heard between 00:33:08 and 01: 01: 50 I note that the New Economy Network Australia (NENA) were very kind in sharing the ‘Population and Climate Change' discussion paper. Their director, Dr. Michelle Maloney was one of the first guests on PGAP and both Jane and I have presented at NENA run conferences. NENA is collaborating with Griffith University's Yunus Centre to deliver a short course: " Building the Wellbeing Economy: Foundations for Learning and Practice." The course brings together 21 thought-leaders over 8 weeks to discuss how we might reshape the economy in which both people and the planet thrive. Political philosopher Jeremy Moss's Carbon Justice posits we have a responsibility to recognise and combat the moral harm done by the mining and exporting of our fossil fuels. Far from being a minor contributor to climate change, he contends, our massive exports of fossil fuels make us one of its key drivers.

I would like to acknowledge the work of Michelle Maloney, Anitra Nelson, Ian Lowe, Katherine Trebeck and Anne Poelina for having an impact on my views, outlooks, and philosophical positions that I have shared on this episode. I've been lucky enough to have them all as guests on PGAP! I'm sure we don't share eye to eye on every single issue and I'm quite proud of holding my own opinions. Australia has been directly involved in the nuclear industry for decades: from the establishment of the Australian Atomic Energy Commission in 1953 to the secret tests at Maralinga and the decision to export uranium in the 1970s and 1980s. Whether we like it or not we are part of the global nuclear industry and bear a moral obligation as guardian of around 30% of the world's uranium deposits. In Long Half-life, Professor Lowe exposes the fundamental challenges politicians and decision-makers face when their own time horizons rarely go beyond next year's budget or election. In this episode Gregory Dobbs chats to Professor Ian Lowe about landmarks in the political debate around nuclear power, the importance of ordinary people in the decision-making process, and the continuing existential threat to the human race the nuclear industry poses.

"Degrowth is happening whether we like it or not" - Michel Stasse In the 'Tasmanian Perspectives’ series, PGAP host Michael Bayliss travels around the Apple Isle to interview Post-Growth mainlanders who have resettled in Tasmania and to discuss their reasons why. In this episode, I travel to the Huon Valley to meet with Michel Stasse, long-time Degrowth advocate, founder of the 'Damn The Matrix' blog and DIO superhero who self-built an impressive self-sufficient, off-grid eco home in the Huon Valley. Mike kindly took some time aside for giving me a tour of his home where the on-site interview took place and discussed with me his reasons for moving from Queensland to Tasmania. We then discuss his life journey towards understanding limits to growth, standing for politics in Queensland, to his current advocacy for Degrowth and his reasons why electric cars and the green new deal won’t save us. I interviewed Mike in February on a hot day for Tasmania - mid 30s - and the day in which Australia endured the Facebook kerfuffle, including the removal of content from Australian activist groups and organisations. As such, there was a whiff of apocalypse already in the air, and during the interview Mike certainly doesn't mince words as he takes us somewhere down the deep end. So a 'health warning’ for anyone expecting a utopian outlook for this episode. Also a slight 'sound warning’ - the episode was recording on site in a dynamic living environment so there is the occasional background sound during the interview. The intro and outro are recorded in my current house-sit in Adelaide, which is right near a main road and right near an operational quarry. So there is the occasional background traffic rumble. Some may call it unfortunate recording conditions - I prefer to call it 'character.' Anyone listening who would prefer pristine recording conditions is always more than welcome to buy me a house somewhere nice ANYTIME. Did this episode scratch the surface leaving you wanting more? Want to find out more about Mike Stasse or Professor Ian Lowe, who is mentioned in my discussions with Mike and who I include an interview excerpt at the start of the episode? Well I'm glad you asked! The blog 'Damn The Matrix’ can be found here (https://damnthematrix.wordpress.com/) Michel discusses peak oil (and other fun things!) on YouTube here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=KuetSASTxXU) I interviewed Professor Ian Lowe as part of Sustainable Population Australia's 'meet our patrons' video series that can be found on the YouTube channel here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v3JW6-7O5EU&list=PLqZhQi8eQurRR5xL6xP9qGgyStq4xkVNt&index=4). The 2nd National New Economy conference in Australia began with a couple of extremely witty and profound keynote addresses. Together, Professor Ian Lowe and Aboriginal elder Dr Mary Graham craft a deft balance between gravity and levity, authority and guidance, and everyday language with a breadth of insight that genuinely captivates. Ian is an Order of Australia medal winner, former President of the Australian Conservation Foundation, and author of over 20 books. He talks of current trajectories and patterns, offering a broad take on what's required and what has worked for social movements most effectively in the past. Mary is a highly respected Aboriginal elder, Associate Adjunct Professor at the University of Queensland, and a consultant in Aboriginal community planning and development. She offers a sweeping perspective on ‘First Nations Economics' and its relevance to our society today. And tellingly, both speakers converge on the moral aspect of achieving the new economy transition. So what are the most important elements – the critical parametres - of the new economy? And how do we go about harnessing them towards making that new economy our reality? It's the divide that every marketer knows about, but is so rarely broached in the workforce. So what is it about sales and marketing that has polarised for so long? And why does this dynamic continue to exist when the outcomes of sales and marketing are actually the same?  This week on The CMO Show it's all about sales versus marketing. Or is it? We will ask the hard questions in an attempt to work out how these two historically divided fields are colliding and changing. Ian Lowe, founder and CEO at eccoh joins Mark Jones and JV Douglas to chat about why the marketing department should listen to the sales department (and vice versa, of course). With more than 20 years' experience in sales, Lowe's vision to pioneer a customer-centric sales revolution is reframing the sales and marketing space. “There's definitely a bit of tension between sales and marketing and I think part of that tension is because of the internal competitive nature of sales organisations,” Lowe said. “Typically sales people are taught sales skills and sales techniques to control the sales cycle to produce the results that they want to produce. Typically marketers aren't part of that sort of training.” Lowe's vision that the customer and their experience be central to the entire sales and marketing process is pioneering a new way of thinking in the Australian marketing industry. “I think sales is something that typically is fear based,” he told Jones and Douglas. “Once we take away all that baggage and all that sort of negativity, people just are able to be themselves and be comfortable with who they are and flourish individually in their lives and in their businesses.”
