Within the rugged valley of the Crowsnest Pass, 1920, a daring robbery had sent shockwaves throughout the Canadian Rockies and her many communities. Three bandits held up a locomotive bound for the town of Crowsnest, their unknown motives as much a mystery as the men themselves. Nestled within the Canadian Rockies in southwest Alberta is Crowsnest Pass. The name is a translation of Native American words that meant "the nest of the crow." Crowsnest Pass is an area of stunning scenery, but also a place of tragedy, rum running, coal mining and was the home of the last woman to hang in Alberta. There are many interesting stories about this location and several of them seem to have ghosts connected to them. Join us for the history and hauntings of Alberta's Crowsnest Pass! In this emotionally charged episode, Kelly covers three disasters in Alberta that have led to the reported hauntings of all three sites. The Frank slide of 1903, The Hillcrest Mine Disaster of 1914, and the Bellevue Mine explosion of 1910. Do the ghosts of those lost in these disasters still wander the Crosnest Pass? Or, are the echoes of the past sometimes meant to be left unsolved? Huge thanks goes out to Andee and the crew over at the Frank Slide Interpretive Center. “It's going to be a challenge and yes, it's scary, but I know it's going to be a lot easier than being a race director. And I think it's important that runners know that and really appreciate race directors because it's a lot of hard work. And we're so lucky that there are so many races that we can now pick from.” - Susan Lowe-Wylde on running the Minotaur after directing it for many yearsSusan and Ian Lowe-Wylde own spry in Blairmore, Alberta, which is in the Crowsnest Pass region of Alberta. With Rocky Mountains on one side and prairie land on the other, the couple of 40 years love the variety of terrain in the region. They are always looking for adventure as they love being the ones that know the spots nobody else does. This passion and drive for the outdoors is a big reason why they love calling the Crowsnest Pass region home. They've witnessed a lot of change and growth over the years and their proud they've been part of that growth. The pass is becoming more and more popular with trail runners which has been good for their shop, and the fact they are so involved in the community means runners and outdoor enthusiasts get many opportunities to interact with them. Susan and Ian wanted to make a difference for runners and their downtown with spry, and they had to trust the process to get there. It wasn't easy in the beginning.“Our mindset is that, yeah, you know what? (The store's) probably not making money right now. We don't care. We're gonna make it great. So we just, we bought the right stuff and we did it the right way, even though there wasn't really a return on it for quite a few years. And I think now, now it is a really good, curated selection of stuff for running and, and hiking and climbing. And it's an interesting mix, it didn't just happen overnight.” - Ian Lowe-WlydeSusan and Ian were really fun to chat with. A couple that's been together for 40 years knows each other so well and it was fun getting their history from both of them. They're all about getting outdoors and sharing that love with others and we definitely benefit from having folks like this in our community! Happy Masters Week everyone. For me, this is THE most magical week of the year. As they say, The Master is a tradition unlike any other. This week both parts of the show are dedicated to taking you inside the tournament to give you a sense of what it's like to be on those magnificent grounds. I kick it off with Tom Patri, who has been out there several times with his good friend, 1992 Masters Champion Fred Couples. Also joining me in Part 1 is John Cook. Cookie played in 15 Masters tournaments dating back to 1979. He earned his way into that Masters field with his victory in the 1978 US Amateur. Tom Patri shares stories of being alongside Fred Couples during his run to the Green Jacket in '92. To this day, none of us know how Fred's tee shot on #12 didn't roll back into Rae's Creek. We hear what Fred's reaction was. Tom also shares some of his other favorite Masters memories, the legends he wished could have donned a Green Jacket, and current players he'd love to see win. I also get his thoughts on Scottie Scheffler's place in history if he were to win his second Masters. Check out Tom's YouTube Channel where you can get over 300 free video lessons: https://www.youtube.com/@TomPatriGolf John Cook takes us down Magnolia Lane, remembering that first drive up alongside his mentor Ken Venturi. We hear about his night in the Crows Nest and the Augusta National memorabilia he collected over the years. I also get Cookie's thoughts on what's driving television ratings down, and why the networks are trying to replace the great Analysts that many of us love. Give John a follow on Twitter @johncookgolf & Instagram @jncookosu.

Former PGA Tour Pros Bill Mallon and Scott Gump joined me in Part 2 of last week's show. Bill Mallon played Tour in the mid to late 1970s during the Golden Age of the PGA Tour. After winning 43 amateur titles he earned his way through Q-School in 1975. He finished 6th at the 1976 Western Open, 3 strokes back of Al Geiberger. He played in the 1977 US Open at Southern Hills. The heat that week was brutal but Bill talks about how he thrives in conditions like that even though he's from New England. We talked about the death threats that eventual winner Hubert Green dealt with that week. Bill decided to walk away from the Tour after the 1979 season and go back to college to get his medical degree. He became a leading Orthopaedic Surgeon and medical advisor to Golf Digest. I got his thoughts on what Tiger Woods is now trying to play through following his surgeries to fuse a joint in his foot and vertebrae in his back. Scott Gump was a tremendous Amateur player as well. He was the medalist during the stroke play portion of the 1987 US Amateur. He earned his way on Tour by finishing 3rd at Q-School in 1990 and then winning on the Space Coast and Korn Ferry Tours. You'll hear his stories about that US Amateur and the grueling 6 rounds of Q-School. His good play at the '87 US Amateur earned him a trip to the 1988 Masters. Scott recalls his stay in the Crows Nest for the week, the legendary inexpensive meals, playing a practice round with Gary Player, and playing in the Par 3 Tournament. We then hear about his hot play late in the 1991 season at The International Tournament and the Walt Disney World Classic.
When millionaire Australian socialite Margaret Wales-King and her husband, Paul King, disappeared in April 2002, friends and family became concerned something serious had happened to the older couple. Those fears and concerns were confirmed a few weeks later, when park rangers discovered their bodies in a shallow grave in Marysville, Victoria. Margaret and her husband had been clubbed and strangled to death. The press dubbed the murders “the society killings” and the tragedy captured the Australian public's attention for the ways it seemed to have been pulled right out of a classic mystery novel. Yet for all the couple's wealth, nothing appeared to be missing from their home and their bodies were discovered still wearing jewelry and in possession of credit cards and other valuables. Under the circumstances, police looked to Wales-King's children, who stood to gain a great deal of money in the event of Margaret's death. Within a week the case started to come together, and a suspect was revealed. While most of the family responded to the Wales-King murders in a manner one would expect, thirty-four-year-old Matthew Wales behavior was erratic, explosive, and suspicious. Upon interviewing Matthew, investigators learned he was the last person to have seen his mother and stepfather the night they were murdered, after having dinner with Matthew and his wife, Maritza. A few weeks later, after multiple interviews, Matthew Wales confessed to murdering his parents; though why he had done it came as a shock to everyone who knew the family.ReferencesAnderson, Paul, Philip Cullen, and Mark Butler. 2002. Marie Brennan and Lew Zipin talk about their research and action-research projects with schools and universities. They present a direction for education that is intertwined with commmunities - with students researching issues that matter to them, while drawing from a range of sources and 'knowledges', and forming relevant relationships in the process. This is contrasted with the current top-down, command-and-control approach of our schools and universities, within a Neoliberal, corporatised model. Certainly, Marie and Lew's approach is much better suited to meet the many challenges facing us, such as economic disadvantage, global warming, and the effects of colonisation. Nikki Mottram talks to Cheryl Akle about how her career as a child protection officer influenced her debut crime novel, Crows Nest, which is out now. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
If you love a good crime novel, you will love our special guest!Today in The Good Girl Confessional, host Sandy Lowres chats with Crime Writer Nikki Mottram. While at home with a new baby and a toddler, Nikki was looking for a creative outlet and so began a love affair with writing. When Nikki had her own children, she started to see her career in child protection in a whole new light. Drawing on those experiences in child protection, but affected by a 30 year old unsolved murder of two women she had read about, Nikki's debut novel, Crows Nest, combats the often ineffectual essence of social workers previously portrayed in books and film, bringing forward a main character, Dana Gibson, written with intelligence, both hardworking and ruthless when it comes to the protection of children. Through Nikki's unique and well informed lens, she challenges the misconceptions of the child protection industry through a heart-twisting and compelling small town crime fiction. Nikki's debut novel, set near the town she actually lives in, is gripping, with believable and fully formed characters. Having signed a two book deal with UQP, Nikki's second book coming in 2024!You can follow Nikki here:https://www.instagram.com/nikkiamottramNikki's book Crows Nest is available in all good bookstores.-The Good Girl Confessional is the award-winning Podcast of WB40 - Women Beyond Forty, a platform for women 40, 50, 60 and beyond. I think a lot of us have come to know the forms of Christianity that we don't want. We've seen politicised versions of faith that we want nothing to do with. We've witnessed institutional failings, scandals and cover-ups that we want to distance ourselves from. But, sometimes it's harder to answer the question, what now? How do I put the pieces back together?A few years ago someone told me it's not enough to know what you're running away from. You'll be sustained by knowing what you're running towards. I think there's a lot of wisdom in that. So, the question is, are there more attractive, beautiful, faithful, life-giving ways of following Jesus? When I see people embodying and giving voice to authentic answers to this question it gives me great hope. Graeme Anderson is one of those people. He's a pastor at Northside Baptist in Crows Nest, Sydney and over many years his understanding of what it means to follow Jesus and to live in the kingdom Jesus described has evolved significantly. It's moved from a knowledge-based, propositional faith to an embodied, open, generous way of being in the world that is attentive to what love might look like here and now. To help other people experience this Graeme's written a book called Follow — and created a range of accompanying resources including a 4 week email devotional series. I've just finished it and was genuinely surprised at how refreshing, accessible and invitational it was. If you're interested you can check it out at follow.org.au Here's a conversation with Graeme about what following Jesus might look like when we feel our institutions have let us down.

Even though we're just past Women's History Month, it's never a bad time to spotlight the impact of an Indiana architectural trail-blazer who had both pizzazz and spunk. Beginning in the 1950s, when women home builders were a rarity, Avriel Shull designed and built mid-century modern homes in Carmel, Indianapolis and other Hoosier cities. National periodicals eventually distributed the house plans of "Avriel" (she often was referred to by her first name only), with orders for her home patterns continuing long after she died in her mid-40s in 1976. "Years before branding became an essential component of business success, Avriel was both a well-known company brand and a synonym for modern design," according to our guest, Connie Zeigler, owner of C. Resources, on this encore of a show originally broadcast in 2019. A historian, researcher and preservationist, Connie prepared the nomination for the National Register of Historic Places of the Thornhurst subdivision in Carmel, where Avriel designed 21 mid-century modern homes. Connie also prepared a National Register nomination for Ladywood Estates, an apartment complex (now condos) in Indianapolis designed by Avriel that opened in 1967. Just as Avriel's homes created something of a stir - with their floor-to-ceiling windows, sliding glass doors, vertical cedar siding and walled patios during an era noted for basic ranch houses - red-haired, charismatic Avriel drew attention on a personal level as well. In 1951, Life magazine devoted a multi-page photo spread to her splashy wedding, during which Avriel entered amid a release of white birds; at 2 a.m., she lifted her white gown to perform the can-can. Her husband was one of Indiana's best-known journalists of the era. An irreverent TV columnist for the Indianapolis News (and, before that, for the Indianapolis Times), R.K. Shull also answered reader questions in "Shull's Mailbag," which appeared in 260 newspapers across the country. None of that overshadowed his wife, who, as Connie has written, "lived life at breakneck speed." According to Connie, Avriel "often laid the stone herself on the houses she designed." As for an enduring architectural legacy, Connie notes that "At least 100, and probably more, of her houses are still standing in central Indiana." But Avriel was not an architect. In fact, although she studied at what was then the John Herron Art Institute during the 1940s, Avriel never earned a college degree. In all of her Thornhurst subdivision houses - which were the focus of a 2017 home tour organized by the Carmel Clay Historical Society - Avriel featured modern fireplaces, some of which she built herself. In a cover story about Avriel for a 2012 issue of Traces magazine published by the Indiana Historical Society, Connie notes that many of the fireplaces "had two-sided hearths opening into two different rooms." Connie writes that for home interiors, Avriel chose vinyl-topped stools, tripod-legged lamps and sofas with hairpin legs, "unlike the ruffled sofas and overstuffed chairs of earlier eras." In many of the bathrooms, she painted murals - and added an elaborate "Avriel" as a signature to her work. By the mid-1960s, Avriel landed contracts to design homes in upscale neighborhoods on the northside of Indianapolis including Avalon Hills, Crow's Nest, Meridian Hills and Sunset Lane. In the final years before her death just shy of her 45th birthday, Avriel was building houses in Brownsburg, Kokomo, Westfield and Evansville. Our guest Connie Zeigler, after a long, influential career focused primarily on Indianapolis-area history and architecture, moved last month to Providence, R.I. "I'll continue to do research and writing on a variety of design and architecture-related subjects," she reports, "including a book on several unheralded women designers married to well-known architects from the mid-20th century."
