Welcome back to another episode of The Video Store Podcast. This week, I have some new recommendations, featuring a selection of neo-noir classics from the '70s and early '80s. These films capture the essence of the genre with their complex characters, intricate plots, and moody atmospheres. I grew up as a fan of original noir films that I would see on TV late shows and weekend film fests. So as I got older, my enjoyment of these made a lot of sense.First up is The Long Goodbye (1973), directed by Robert Altman. This film features Elliott Gould as Philip Marlowe, a laid-back private detective navigating a world of mystery and betrayal in contemporary Los Angeles. Altman's unique take on Raymond Chandler's classic character adds a touch of humor and irreverence to the story. Pay attention to the film's soundtrack by John Williams, which cleverly reprises the same theme in various styles throughout the movie.Next, we have Chinatown (1974), directed by Roman Polanski. This film stars Jack Nicholson as private investigator Jake Gittes, who gets entangled in a web of corruption and deceit in 1930s Los Angeles. Faye Dunaway and John Huston deliver unforgettable performances. Keep an eye out for the film's meticulous attention to detail, from its period-accurate costumes to its stunning cinematography by John A. Alonzo. This might be the most famous film that has a nose-slashing in it.Moving on, I am recommending Night Moves (1975), directed by Arthur Penn. Gene Hackman stars as Harry Moseby, a former football player turned private investigator. As he searches for a runaway teenager, Moseby finds himself caught in a dark and twisted conspiracy. Hackman's performance, as you might expect, is a standout, and the film's ambiguous ending will leave you pondering long after the credits roll (Seventies!) Keep an eye out for a young Melanie Griffith in one of her earliest roles.Lastly, we have Cutter's Way (1981), directed by Ivan Passer. This film features Jeff Bridges as Richard Bone, who becomes involved in a murder investigation with his friend Alex Cutter, played by John Heard. The film paints a sad/confusing picture of post-Vietnam America and explores themes of disillusionment and betrayal. The chemistry between Bridges and Heard is electric, and Lisa Eichhorn delivers a heartbreaking performance as Cutter's wife, Mo.These films are essential viewing for any fan of the noir genre or films of the seventies. While they have a lot in common, they each also bring something unique to the table and showcase some of the best talent of their time, both in front of and behind the camera. There may be some dated or downright silly elements of Cutter's Way, Ivan Passer's 1981 mystery—but what's great about it outweighs any of its clumsiness and stays in the viewer's memory. Not enough people know about John Heard's performance as the unhinged, unlikable, yet undeniably compelling Alex Cutter; this film without any scenes of military conflict is one of the best about Vietnam. Join Mike and Dan for a conversation about the ways in which the title character resembles Captain Ahab physically, emotionally, and psychologically; how the film uses and then abandons Hollywood conventions; and the ways in which a convoluted murder plot doesn't detract from complicated issues of heroism, friendship, and justice. Like the rest of Europe, Czechoslovakia was busy making its own cinematic waves in the 1960s. Arguably, the Czechoslovak New Wave was one of the broadest and most formidable, stretching from extremely abstract art films to slice-of-life kitchen sink dramas. These filmmakers went in search of truth – indulging in a mix of dark humor, social satire and pure absurdism – and they would have gotten away with it too if it weren't for that dang ol' Soviet Union eventually putting the smack down on them. At the forefront of this movement was a special foreman – Miloš Forman, that is. By his side was Ivan Passer, Jaroslav Papoušek and Václav Šašek, all of whom graduated from FAMU and went on to work together closely as filmmakers. One rainy night in Santa Barbara, Richard Bone (Jeff Bridges) witnesses a man dumping the corpse of a young girl; when he later recognizes a local captain of industry as the man who could be the culprit, his unhinged and physically shattered Vietnam veteran buddy Alex Cutter (John Heard) takes this ball and runs with it, launching an ill-advised blackmail scheme against the tycoon. The 10th episode of Cultpix Radio WCPX 66.6 Smut Pedler and Django Nudo (with a faulty microphone - sorry)  take a journey into the psychedelic 60s and 70s of drugs films, celebrate Cultpix now being open for everyone to join and look at the new films on the site.Cultpix radio has been open to the general public for a week and with the exception of being pulled into the global Firstly outage (in good company with Spotify and CNN) things have been going moothly and the feedback has been encouraging. We look at how Netflix and others are copying us in terms of moving into merchandise, podcasts, celebrity birthdays and more - because clearly nobody was doing it before us (-;Cultpix has sold out and become part of the establishment as Swedish Film Institute has awarded us a grant to enable us to do more innovative stuff. We dive back into what drugs does to filmmaking. This is your cinema brain on drugs part 2: First we do an Alice double bill. Alice in Acidland who "travels through the dark and endless caverns of Acidland. The place for her is no fairytale." But it does features lesbian seduction and hippie nudity and sex. Meanwhile the short Curious Alice was produced by a US government agency  to warn eight-year olds about the dangers of drugs but ends up being a trippy and fun Terry Gilliam-esque animation. A trio of films from our friends Something Weird video all tap into the drug/hippie hysteria of the late 1960s. Psychadelic Sexkicks, Wild Hippie Party, The Acid Eaters. On the more serious end Alex de Renzy's Weed looks at the whole political, legal and cultural ecosystem around weeds and drugs in the early 1970s. He is better known for later directing porn classics such as Pretty Peaches and Babyface. Perhaps the best anti-drug documentary is the hard hitting A Day in the Death of Donny B. which looks at the damage heroine does to black people and communities, done in cinema verite style with a downbeat groove. Worth 11 minutes of your time. More typical for US anti-drug propaganda is the white middle class student who goes wrong with drugs, as in Narcotics: Pit of Despair, though at least the film was not the usual kiss of death for the career of the lead Kevin Tighe who went on to star in Lost and K-9. More mainstream drug portrayal can be found in Ivan Passer's Born to Win in which George Segal (who passed away this year) , Karen Black and a very young Robert DeNiro, all drift around Time's Square hustling and looking to score. Finally a side of Rome that tourists did not get to see gets exposed in Don't Count on Us from Penny Video (Ciao Simone!).  Finally we talk about some of the new films on the site and there are quite a few this week. Line Six/Linje Sex shares a lot of creative talent with Terror in the Midnight Sun. In addition to being a strong player, and often the Captain of the US Olimpiad team, IM John Donaldson is a renowned chess historian and author. He has been researching the life of Bobby Fischer for a decade, and he has been on the podcast in the past to discuss his prior publications on Fischer. Late in 2020, IM John Donaldson published his most comprehensive, and acclaimed Fischer work yet, Bobby Fischer and his World. This book was already named Chess.com’s 2020 book of the year, despite some stiff competition in a great year for chess books. I greatly enjoyed John’s work, which is a combination of biography and game analysis. In our conversation, of course we discuss details of Fischer’s life in some detail, with a particular emphasis on the new details John has uncovered. Iron City (White Whisker Books) Join L.A. novelist David Scott Milton for the launch of his new novel, Iron City! About Iron City: Frank Kalinyak, disgraced ex-cop, returns to Pittsburgh, Pa., “Iron City”, his hometown, from Tucson where he has been living a desperate existence since the death of his young daughter. He has been summoned home by Bobby Mack, an Assistant D.A., to find out who murdered an old high school friend. Kalinyak is swept into a whirlpool of bizarre killings, religious fanaticism, church duplicity, hustlers, cops, junkies, old friends gone bad. Amid the fractured landscape of Iron City, rusting mills, rotting industry, he struggles to find sense in his life. Ultimately he must ask: who is he and can he survive? David Scott Milton started as an actor in New York, learning acting and playwriting at  Theatre Genesis alongside Sam Shepard, Leonard Melfi, and Murray Mednick. Milton's first play, Bread, appeared at the American Place theatre, and he had a half-dozen more plays appear Off-Broadway.  Duet premiered on Broadway, starring Ben Gazzara. Milton's play Skin won the Neil Simon Playwriting Award. When Milton moved to Los Angeles in the seventies, he fell into film writing and fiction writing. Ivan Passer directed his first screenplay, Born to Win, starring George Segal and Karen Black. Iron City is his sixth novel. He taught playwriting at USC starting in 1977, and for thirteen years, he also taught creative writing to men at the maximum security prison in Tehachapi. He wrote an article about the the prison for the Los Angeles Times (click here) and he created a one-man show, Murderers Are My Life, which was nominated as best one-man show by the Valley Theater League of Los Angeles.
