A dysfunctional team of MI5 agents and their obnoxious boss, the notorious Jackson Lamb, navigate the espionage world's smoke and mirrors to defend England from sinister forces. John Fardy presenter of Screentime takes a look at the show Slow Horses on this week's Boxed.

John is joined by former South Bend, Indiana, mayor and once and future presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg to discuss the state of the presidential race with 45 days to go before November 5: why Kamala Harris is playing a stronger homestretch hand than Donald Trump; what Trump and J.D. Vance's incendiary lies about the Haitian immigrants of Springfield, Ohio, have in common with Joseph McCarthy's Red Scare; and how Harris-Walz can seal the deal in the Blue Wall states of PA, MI, and WI. Mayor Pete also explains why he's a Slow Horses junkie, his husband Chasten is merely Slow Horses curious, and whether the chronic flatulence of Gary Oldman's character Jackson Lamb is a feature or a bug.

Ben and Nemone put Jackson Lamb from Slow Horses on the couch. Gary Oldman's version of Mick Herron's character has become household name, and you can see why. A man with many layers, a million secrets, and a lightning rod for other's emotions – perhaps he is the perfect Freudian analyst. Nemone gives us a crash course in transference and counter-transference, looks at why people mask and create false selves, and what drives people into a career where they hide their true selves from everyone, including themselves. This is the PERFECT watching companion to Season 4 of Slow Horses, coming 4th September on AppleTV+! And if you want to look at false selves, then listen back to our episode on The Morning Show's Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon. Ben and Nemone put Moira Rose on the couch and take a deep dive into her narcissistic tendencies, and what effect that has on the rest of the Schitts. Nemone explains how narcissism is not as easy to spot as its widespread use would have you believe. We also discuss the collection of wigs that Moira keeps in her closet and why they are transitional objects. And if you're interested in hearing more on narcissism, then check out our episode on Game of Thrones' Cersei Lannister. Ben and Nemone discuss Helen McCrory's iconic Poly Shelby from Peaky Blinders. She's a devout Catholic, but up to her neck in the murky world of bootlegging and murder. Nemone gets into the thorny question of how she might match those up, and reveals how each of us has a ‘silent observer' inside. We also dive into the history of women's rights in 1920s England. Episode 291. We conclude Apple April by watching season one of the Apple TV+ espionage drama, Slow Horses. MI5 agents who have notorious failures but who aren't incompetent enough to be fired are demoted to Slough House, an outpost where they do menial tasks under the command of the misanthropic Jackson Lamb. This team of misfits has a chance to prove themselves when they stumble upon a kidnapping conspiracy that may have been orchestrated by one of their own M15 bosses. We discuss how the show builds on its ensemble cast and knows exactly when to give you more time with a supporting character, the balance of dumb mistakes with genuine clever spycraft, and a scene where Gary Oldman farts that will make all dads stand up and clap.(00:00) - Intro (00:04) - Welcome and banter (04:05) - Non-spoiler thoughts on Slow Horses s1 (13:52) - Housekeeping (20:04) - Spoilers!! Bust out the fancy beer and liquor, as the Bums ring in the New Year with Episode 100 (and the crowd rejoiced)!! On the front nine, the Paddy Files have turned up missing, along with our NFL picks; the Bums wrap up NFL chatter heading dead into the final week of regular season play; the Bears year-in-review and prognostications are flowing like wine; draft preview chatter; Denver's brass tells ‘Mr. Unlimited' to stuff it in his a**, as Payton is playing King Dick; David Tepper's infamy reigns on, as he learned nothing in Pittsburgh with the Rooneys; other notable NFL bits-and-bobs; a College Football National Championship preview, featuring M and Dub; ladies trying to get beads in the French Quarter; Dodgers are spending like cross-faded, drunken sailors (atrocious post-season track record notwithstanding); Draymond is acting “a thug”; and close with NBA Game Ball Gate, featuring the bitch ass skipper of the Pacers, Rick Carlisle. The thing about intergalatically famous beer reviews, is they never get old; as was the case with the Bums first beer review for 2024; Old Irving Brewing in Chicago, IL get the nod to help celebrate the New Year and the Bums of Monarchy's 100th Episode — showcasing a Barrel-Aged Champurrado Krampus (2022), an Imperial, Double Milk stout with a whopping 14% ABV — oh mama, get your Mexican chocolate on; Karen Rodgers is inexplicably picking conspiracy theory bones with Jimmy Kimmel; perennial stand up comics, Dave Chappelle and Ricky Gervais are under the rainbow microscope once again; Paddy tells tales from Marco Island, FL; the Holiday season has put a strain on the Bums' livers; RIP to half of Starskey & Hutch; Apple TV has a major hit with Slow Horses series, led by hilarious front-man, Jackson Lamb; and close with a 100th-episode salute. Our massive, global listener following hasn't gotten to our heads yet, so talk to us while the getting is good. All of this majesty, mixed with a tiny dose of static.Recorded on January 5th, 2024 at B.O.M. northwest headquarters ‘The Eagle's Nest' in Chicago, IL USA.

For Academy Award-winning actor Gary Oldman, now is the perfect time for his first TV series. Calling today a “whole new era of TV” after years of “snobbery” from film actors, he says, “You will see some of the best writing and acting and cinematography and set design in your home, on your TV,” Oldman told Newsweek's H. Alan Scott. And that's exactly what you'll find in his Apple TV+ series ‘Slow Horses,' now in its third season with the fourth already filmed and waiting in the wings. Based on Mick Herron's Slough House book series, Oldman plays Jackson Lamb, the disheveled (and likely intoxicated) head of a U.K. MI5 division for security agents who have screwed up but not been fired. “He's in, but he's out. It's that thing of being really very good at something in a world that you absolutely despise.” Lamb is more in line with Oldman's usual roles, more adult-driven, with the exception of one of his most famous characters: Sirius Black in the ‘Harry Potter' franchise. “My fan base went from [age] 36 to 6 overnight,” he said, adding he's so “privileged” to have been a part of it. Apple TV Plus recently launched Season 3 of Slow Horses starring Gary Oldman as the disheveled, flatulent, and often drunk Jackson Lamb. It is also midway through its Monarch Legacy of Monsters show that expands Legendary's Monsterverse. I had an opportunity to speak with some of the creative folks behind both shows. First, I'll be speaking to Oldman and co-star Jack Lowden about where their characters are in this latest season of Mick Herron's espionage tale. Then I will talk to the people behind the camera who are bringing Godzilla to the small screen.

Nominated four times, he won the Booker Prize in 1989 for The Remains of the Day, and was most recently nominated for an Academy Award for his screenplay for the 2022 film “Living.” In this interview, he discusses his most recent book at that time, When We Were Orphans, and talks about how he became a writer and the relationship of his Japanese heritage to his life in Great Britain, where he's lived since he was six years old. His most recent novel, a parable, is titled Klara and the Sun, and was published in 2021. Mick Herron answers readers' questions about his novel, Slow Horses, the first in his hugely popular Slough House series. In it we meet the 'Slow Horses' for the first time; failed spies who instead of being pensioned off, find themselves working in Slough House, near the Barbican in London. Here, they carry out menial administrative tasks of little or no importance, led by their offensive, vulgar boss Jackson Lamb. In this novel, the Slow Horses find themselves unexpectedly at the centre of the action. Thriller writer Mick Herron is the heir to John Le Carre - the author of the wildly acclaimed Slough House espionage novels. The TV adaptation named after the first in the series, Slow Horses, is one of the best shows around - no mean feat in our golden age of TV drama. It stars Gary Oldman as Herron's Falstaffian protagonist Jackson Lamb. The latest Slough House novel, Bad Actors, has just come out in paperback. Mick sat down with Hannah MacInnes live on stage a couple of weeks back to tell us more. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
In today's episode of Bingeworthy, our TV and streaming podcast host Mike DeAngelo gets pulled back into Apple TV+'s London-based spy series, “Slow Horses.” Based on the Mick Herron novel of the same name, the show follows Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman), the slovenly, irascible, insubordinate leader of Slough House —a destination for all of British Intelligence's misfits and career f*ck-ups. In the second season, which premiered its first two episodes last week on Apple TV+, the derogatorily dubbed “Slow Horses” stumble into another far-reaching case when a former colleague of Jackson Lamb's is found dead on a bus. Returning to Bingeworthy to discuss the show are cast members Gary Oldman, Saskia Reeves, and Jack Lowden. The cast took a break from shooting seasons three & four back to back to discuss season two. During the interview, Oldman revealed that he may have based a piece of Jackson Lamb on a famous former colleague, Anthony Hopkins. Chris Harris talks to Slow Horses star Gary Oldman about EVs, first cars and fast cars - namely his Chuck Beck replica of a 550 Spyder. Oldman chats about giving his son driving lessons in a Porsche Cayenne, the other vintage car he has in his garage and why taking on the role of Jackson Lamb was quite a grubby experience. In Slow Horses, Gary Oldman plays Jackson Lamb, the slovenly, burnt-out head of Slough House — a rundown, disregarded division of MI5, and serves as a dumping ground for British spies who've made huge mistakes. In the podcast this week, we're speaking to award-winning author, Mick Herron. Mick is the author of the bestselling Slough House novels which have won two Crime Writer's Association Daggers, been published in over 20 languages, and are the basis of a major forthcoming TV series starring Gary Oldman as Jackson Lamb. He is also the author of the Sarah Tucker /Zoë Boehm series, and the standalone novels Reconstruction, Nobody Walks and This is What Happened. “The John le Carré of his generation” according to fellow crime writer, Val McDermid, Mick's books were a slow burn, with Slow Horses (the first in the series) making it to number one an incredible seven years after it's initial publication. Mick now has a huge army of fans that eagerly await every new addition to the Slough House Series.
Soon to be a TV series starring Oscar-award winning Actor Gary Oldman as Jackson Lamb. The seventh book in the Sunday Times best-selling, award-winning, Slough House series, featuring Mick Herron's much loved band of disgraced spies and their notorious leader, Jackson Lamb. 'Kill us? They've never needed to kill us,' said Lamb. 'I mean, look at us. What would be the point?' A year after a calamitous blunder by the Russian secret service left a British citizen dead from novichok poisoning, Diana Taverner is on the warpath. What seems a gutless response from the government has pushed the Service's First Desk into mounting her own counter-offensive - but she's had to make a deal with the devil first. And given that the devil in question is arch-manipulator Peter Judd, she could be about to lose control of everything she's fought for. Meanwhile, still reeling from recent losses, the slow horses are worried they've been pushed further into the cold. Slough House has been wiped from Service records and fatal accidents keep happening. No wonder Jackson Lamb's crew are feeling paranoid. But have they actually been targeted? With a new populist movement taking a grip on London's streets, and the old order ensuring that everything's for sale to the highest bidder, the world's an uncomfortable place for those deemed surplus to requirements. The wise move would be to find a safe place and wait for the troubles to pass. But the slow horses aren't famed for making wise decisions
Slough House by Mick HerronSlough House by Mick Herron is the 7th in a fabulous series set in the world of MI5 – the place of the title is an office building where disgraced MI5 operatives are sent and spend their working days in a kind of purgatory, supervised by Jackson Lamb – a slothful, boorish, witty and possibly genius manager. The Royal Correspondent by Alexandra JoelThe Royal Correspondent by Alexandra Joel is set in the swinging 60's, during Princess Margaret's marriage to an unconventional photographer sparked interest around the world. In this novel based on that event, Blaise Hill is a feisty young journalist from a rough neighbourhood in Sydney who's sent to London to cover it, and finds herself caught in a world of love and betrayal, family secrets and conspiracy in the heart of high society.LISTEN ABOVE
A Stab In The Dark: A UKTV Original Crime Podcast with Mark Billingham
In this brand-new episode of A Stab In The Dark, award-winning crime writer Mark Billingham talks to Mick Herron, one of the most critically acclaimed writers in the UK. Throughout their chat, they discuss Mick's 'Slough House' series of spy novels, the origins of his beloved lead character, Jackson Lamb, and the forthcoming TV adaptation, starring Gary Oldman. Mick also exclusively reveals the title of his new book, not out until 2021. Elsewhere, our man with the spyglass, Paul Hirons, provides a potted history of the Great British spy novel. Welcome to the latest Irish Times Books Podcast, an interview with Mick Herron, the author of the Slough House series of spy novels. Herron is originally from a working-class background in Newcastle but went on to study English at Oxford, where he still lives. Described as the John le Carré of his generation, he has created the bestselling Slough House series which features a rogue's gallery of spies who have screwed up or been stitched up and are as a consequence desk-bound – “less MI5, more 9 to 5”. Presiding over them is the magnificently monstrous Jackson Lamb, a brutally insensitive, belching, boozing, Falstaffian figure who makes their lives a misery but ultimately has their backs. The latest book in the series, Slow Country, is one of the best so far, tightly plotted, wittily written and as a bonus a pitiless portrait of Brexit Britain. Herron shares his views on the current political drama gripping the UK as well as his influences and writing methods.
In our first hour of today's show, Randy talks about Gun Control and School Safety Reform. He also talks with Jackson Lamb about his new book "Kid of a Cop," and about the tomorrow. If you would like to get your stories to Jackson, but won't be able to go to the rally.
