This week, we watched Season 1 Episode 19 (“Kid Gloves”) and drank another wine from our ol' reliable vineyard: Decoy. Jules swilled Decoy's Cabernet Sauvignon, and Brie misunderstood the assignment (she got Josh again, by mistake). Tune in as we chat about the beauty of the ‘simplistic-plot-that-packs-a-moral-punch': the kind of bare-bones storytelling that must be perfected in a 22-minute episode. Enjoy!
Thank you to Ryan for coming to the flat, sinking a few cans and chatting a lot of shit with me. A second attempt was made on Trump's life this past week and for the miniscule amount of coverage the mainstream media gave it over a barely 48-hour news cycle, most of that time was dedicated to manufacturing the narrative that Trump is to blame for unhinged leftists and regular MSNBC consumers constantly trying to kill him. As if that wasn't bad enough, Hillary Clinton (of all people) took this opportune moment to shill her next memoir and complain to Rachel Maddow that the media isn't tough enough on Trump. It appears that the media's sole purpose (other than groveling to the powerful) is to warp reality into some funhouse version, 180 degrees from the truth. In another neposode, Chaz and Schatz welcome Gary “G-Mann” Baumann of Steel Revenge, the band he's in with Chaz. Gary has a long history playing bass and guitar in bands in and around Northern Colorado for most of his life, and has the stories to go with it. Join us for a great journey back through the glory days of the Colorado rock scene from the inside out. Gary waxes nostalgic dropping some pretty big names, as well as a few brain farts along the way. We hear about: - Turning a family cow into brand new Epiphone - Being a roadie and sound guy in and around Denver - Being left a schedule one present from the opening act that ROCKED anything he'd ever seen - Opening for rock's biggest Canadian trio in our humble cow-town in the late 70's - “Making $14 the hard way” as a working musician in Denver in the 70's, 80's, and today - Being the guy who owns the PA, and all that implies - Making music with family, friends, and world-class musicians in the Rocky Mountain west Gary's fond memories of fun and good times make for a down-home evening of well-spun rememberences of a music scean more active than you might think from the outside looking in. The wheel gives us Kid Gloves off 1984's Grace Under Pressure, a song we generally knew, er...some of us...one of us at least. The voting turns out in surprising ways, which is always a treat for this weekly fanboy-fest. We name-drop usual suspects like rushvault.com, and we thought fondly of Ed from rushisaband.com. Prophecy Radio episode #117 discusses Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1, episode 6, “We Take a Zebra to Vegas.” How was Lin-Manuel Miranda as Hermes? What did they change from the books? Is Grover everyone's number one suspect for the lightning thief!? We also tackle the latest Percy Jackson news and read a few pieces of listener feedback. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and Updates (00:01:44) Take this quiz to find out which hero you are. Here's the BTS video for episode 4. Have you seen the BTS video for episode 3? If so, send it our way! Did you see how close they're standing in the episode 5 poster!? Rick has been sharing a lot of memories on Threads. James Bobin has been nominated for a Directors Guild of America award for his work on Percy Jackson and the Olympians! There will be a Camp Half-Blood experience in São Paulo, Brazil. Kristen JUST MISSED the Percy Jackson and the Olympians exhibit now in Hollywood Studios. Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1, episode 6, “We Take a Zebra to Vegas” (00:15:21) What did we think of this episode overall? Let's kick off our discussion by breaking down Percy's latest nightmare. The Iris Message scene was amazing for SO many different reasons. Why was Luke in Chiron's office??? You should've heard our shriek when Luke called Percabeth an old married couple. Percy needs to be a little more aware of how sensitive some demigods are about their parents. Who has two thumbs and can release a horde of animals into downtown Las Vegas? Does Grover not care about humans? Did you catch that cute turtle on the median? The Lotus Hotel and Casino was beautiful, inside and out. “Levitating” by Dua Lipa was an inspired choice. We love how the kids immediately remembered about the Lotus Eaters. Graphic novels (and audiobooks) still count as reading!! We finally get a Wise Girl!!! Grover seemed a little miffed at Annabeth. We get some backstory on Luke and Hermes. Meanwhile, Grover meets Augustus. Annabeth doesn't know what to do about the bigger plan at play here and Percy is SHOCKED. Why would Pan be in the Lotus Hotel and Casino? Does anyone know what story Hermes was telling when he was first introduced? The way Hermes' face turns pained when they introduce them as Luke's friends! Was there anything of note in Hermes' office? Annabeth has all the subtly of a sledgehammer. Mortal/god relationships are toxic. What was up with that Young Percy flashback? Hermes is insidious in a different way from Ares. Did you catch Annabeth pulling out her hat as she left? Hermes has some great quotes about parenting. What is Hermes' motivation here? Speaking of motivation, what about Augustus' motives? Was Grover actually close to finding Pan? Percy chose not to lie to Grover about how he kind of made them late. The driving scene was hilarious, and we loved every second. Does 3N17 stand for anything? They made it to Santa Monica in one piece!! This episode gave us some flashbacks to the Tartarus scenes from the books. Is this the same nereid from the other episode? The deadline already passed!! Percy refuses to give up on his quest. There's no way one of those pearls doesn't break, right? What's the difference between a nereid and a naiad? Feedback (01:51:13) notjustanotherfangirl is looking forward to season 2's credits sequence. Nicolaas rightly says that mechanical monster from episode 1 was a rhino, not a bull. Morgan had a guess for those bat/serpent/octopus creatures. Judith likes that Grover doesn't eat random things when he's upset. Jessica wants to know which added scenes we've liked best so far. Solomon had some thoughts on Medusa. Toby Stephens News warns us that making viewers reevaluate the definition of monstrosity is Jon Steinberg's love language. We need Athena and her owl ASAP. Jessica writes back in to talk about the winter solstice visit. And Nicolaas also loved Hephaestus' musical cues. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 118, in which we'll discuss Percy Jackson and the Olympians episode 7! This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Liz and Andrew lead off with the blockbuster Washington Post story that the FBI and DOJ had to be browbeaten into investigating Donald Trump. After that, the duo tackle a bunch of stories surrounding the Trump indictments, including developments in both the Florida and New York cases, Rudy Giuliani being a jerk, and much, much more. In the Patreon bonus, Andrew and Liz duo answer one of your burning questions: how exactly is the Trump documents case going to go to trial if only a handful of people can see the documents he's charged with having willfully retained? The Alan Cox Show
Welcome, Neighbor! John went to see "Nefarious" at the theater, and it was quite the experience... These previews are NOT approved for all audiences. He shares his favorite quote from the movie, and admits he generally enjoyed watching Satan beat the Atheist. The following is a much longer-than-intended discussion about the use of language, violence, and gratuitous sex in Rated R movies. (See: "Boobs and Swords") Also, on the complete opposite end of the spectrum, we reminisce about an old made-for-TV special that's near and dear to our hearts... Later: let's talk about a book that's being promoted to Christian women, but let's pretend to censor the author's name. "Shasta McGwire" is about to release a book called "She Deserves Better." The premise is the church uses a double standard when teaching boys and girls about sex/modesty. (We've never heard that before, right?) It's not faaaaaaaaaair, Neighbor! John doesn't want to call out the author by name, because he doesn't want to deal with their shrieking and finger-wagging. In other words, he doesn't love them enough to tolerate their tantrums in order to tell them something they need to hear. (That's probably what led to thousands of spoiled, insufferable women in the first place...their parents felt the same way when they were young.) The obvious question, though, is: "She deserves better THAN WHAT?" The Bible says we discipline children when we LOVE them. Only a fool despises wisdom and learning. So what's with all these "adult" Christian women, complaining that they're getting more discipline than their brothers? Even if it's true (and it's not), why are women demanding to be treated with Kid Gloves? There's nothing BETTER than holding someone to a very, very, very, very high standard. If you don't, they turn into whiney, self-sorrying Feminists. (Or self-pitying. Whichever you prefer.)Contact The Comedian Next Door by emailing nextdoor@johnbranyan.com. VLOG: Trump Watch, another week; Pras Michel trial to start- with Guo? SBF kid gloves continues; Do Kwon indicted. SVB given to First Citizens, crony capitalism like corrupt UN
On this spirited episode of Mind the Mess, we start in a way that we have never started before. Out of order. We're just talk guys, just shooting the poop if ya know what I'm saying. Anyway we start with TV shows that we are watch and one particular one that RJ is to watching. This is the first time in the episode that Medium T turns red. Then we get into some sports talk! Football! So much is happening including potential collusion against Lamar Jackson. We debate what we would do if we were a GM. Medium T gets more red. Plus why does Ja Morant and Joe Mixon hate kids? Speaking of kids. Kid Gloves. Ever used those two words together in a sentence? Do you hear people use it? Medium T believes so and he legit almost pops a vein this time. Spirited, out of order and down right stupid. Enjoy!
As we steadily continue our slow climb to the end of Season 1, we encounter an episode that has…some issues. While the plot revolves around a necklace Alan gives Cory for his birthday, why does no one else acknowledge the special day? Did Feeny ALSO teach them in 4th grade? And was this episode just one big setup to recreate a shot from The Graduate? All this, and what the hosts think of the hooting and hollering during their swimsuit scene, on this Scuba Duba installment of Pod Meets World!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Mary Jane Bradbury is an amazing amalgam of things — she is an actress, speaker, and educator who melds history and performance in her unique role as an historical interpreter. Mary Jane fully embodies the characters in her performances through costume, voice, and storytelling to bring these historical women to life for her audiences. A beautiful coming-of-age story filled with melancholy, sadness, friendship, and love. The movie stays true to the book and both are worth your time. The story centres around a teenager entering high school. If that wasn't messy enough, he deals with past trauma and present mental health issues. The story tackles big topics with grace and authenticity. There is appropriate levity that helps balance out the depth of pain present. This work doesn't handle the topics with Kid Gloves, it's appropriate and legitimate in all its expressions. Akin to the Breakfast Club but much more Real. Most importantly, I found hope here. Things can be horrible but we can continue to live and find the reasons later. *No Spoilers*. (REVIEW - WEEK 17 YEAR 4) . Social Media: http://linktr.ee/Fk_Arts fk.artists@gmail.com

Alicia Doyle once thought of boxing as a male-dominated, violent sport representing “the dark side” – that is, until “boxing found her” as a tool to conquer some of her own dark shadows. In her late twenties, while a rising journalist, Alicia carried forward a reporting assignment into a life-transforming journey in the ring as one of a few hundred women competitive boxers in America, a winner of several championship titles, and a healer of self. Alicia’s boxing career began unexpectedly. Late one night, she was working alone in a newsroom when the phone rang. The caller was an activist seeking help for the Kid Gloves boxing gym in Simi Valley, California. An influx of heavy rain had destroyed the facility. Because this gym was a haven for troubled and at-risk youth, the caller was anxious to draw media attention to the gym’s mission of service so it could reopen and continue the good work. Alicia became curious: why was this gym so valuable to children? How did it make them better people? She agreed to do the story and connected with the owner, the coaches, and trainers. In them, she found some of the most incredible gentlemen with the biggest hearts she had ever met. She covered the gym for about a year, and eventually, the gym reopened. Initially, Alicia was just an observer of boxers and boxing at the gym. But then a bad break-up with a violent boyfriend inspired her to put on her first pair of boxing gloves. “He punched me in the face,” she said. “I was ashamed, humiliated, angry… and I just wanted to hit something really hard.” Alicia began training. She trained for hours every day and found that boxing took her mind off her shame as it focused her on the present moment. Ultimately the experts at Kid Gloves encouraged her to box competitively. With much inner and outer work, she boxed for two years, winning two Golden Gloves championship titles and earning three wins by knockout. Her pro debut at age thirty in 2000 was named The California Female Fight of the Year. As she recovered physically from her first pro fight, a more profound healing journey began. She began an internal inquiry about what others often asked her, and what she sometimes wondered herself, which was why she boxed anyway, “and, above all, why I exposed myself to a world of hurt.” She began to uncover, confront, and process her buried rage and pain from a volatile childhood. As she addressed the fear, triumph, anguish, and exhilaration she experienced both inside and outside the boxing ring, she came to realize that “after all the battles survived as a child, I immersed myself in the fight again as an adult, making the deliberate choice to expose myself to pain, once again. ... It was as though I was recreating the pain I endured in childhood through boxing, which gave me a place to express my rage, overpower my opponent, and command the control I never had when I was young.” And as she started unearthing her unprocessed childhood pain, she realized she no longer was drawn to experience pain or inflict it on others through boxing. So her initial pro boxing match became her last competitive match, and she took off her gloves. She also shifted from being a cut-throat journalist to an award-winning freelance reporter of good news stories. She began to write about people who overcame great odds and managed to harness peace in their own lives—including Holocaust survivors, women who overcame heinous acts of domestic violence, and children with special needs who faced the world head-on despite their limitations. “Their vulnerability brought me comfort, and during the brief time I spent with them, their stories revealed the most beautiful aspect of human nature—vulnerability—the commonality we all share, a great equalizer that connects us on the deepest level.” Twenty years after Alicia took off her gloves and returned to a full-time journalism career, she felt ready, following decades-long introspection, to use her writing skills to share her own story. Her award-winning book, Fighting Chance, tells how Alicia’s life changed through boxing – how boxing was both “a welcome distraction from what I needed to confront” and a “catalyst for transformation.” The sport gave her a fighting chance to be strong and “find a cure for my darkness.” “Every time I got in the ring, it looked like I was fighting my opponent. But I was always only fighting myself.” Perhaps this is a metaphor for all of us: the things that seem to oppose us are mirrors of our own fears. And maybe there’s a way to overcome by letting in, being with, and radically accepting what we once called “the dark side.” Please join Rev. Bonnie Rose in conversation with this remarkable journalist as Alicia describes her journey of acceptance.
People around the world watched expectantly as global leaders convened at the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference, also known as COP26, in Glasgow, Scotland, from Oct. 31 to Nov. 13. And many around the world were left angry and disillusioned when the conference seemed to culminate in a lot of sincere-sounding rhetoric, empty promises, and unenforceable measures from the world's worst polluters, including the United States. As Dharna Noor recently wrote for The Boston Globe, “Leaders at the Glasgow talks made some bold pledges in the meeting's final agreement, but no one can make them keep those promises. The United Nations has no power to enforce compliance, and there are no penalties for breaking pacts.” What's worse, Noor continues, “According to a report by advocacy groups including Global Witness and Corporate Accountability, more than 500 lobbyists and executives with ties to oil, gas, and coal companies attended [COP26], either as members of trade associations or as part of countries' official delegations.”In this segment of The Marc Steiner Show, Marc and Noor discuss what the proceedings at COP26 tell us about the seriousness of the climate crisis and the inadequacy of the methods we're using to combat it. They also discuss Noor's recent article about the Biden administration overseeing the largest offshore oil and gas lease sale in US history. Dharna Noor is The Boston Globe's climate producer. Prior to joining the Globe's climate team, Noor worked as a staff writer at Earther, Gizmodo's climate vertical, where she also co-produced a season of the podcast Drilled on the fossil fuel industry's influence on education. Before that, she led the climate team at the Real News Network.Read the transcript of this interview: https://therealnews.com/biden-fights-climate-crisis-with-kid-gloves-onTune in for new episodes of The Marc Steiner Show every Monday and Thursday on TRNN.Help us continue producing The Marc Steiner Show by following us and becoming a monthly sustainer:Donate: https://therealnews.com/donate-pod-mssSign up for our newsletter: https://therealnews.com/nl-pod-stGet The Marc Steiner Show updates: https://therealnews.com/up-pod-stLike us on Facebook: https://facebook.com/therealnewsFollow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/therealnews
