Writers Jason England and Bertrand Cooper join director/actor/writer Mtume Gant to discuss. Do meaningful departures from the book indicate a disinterest in working class politics that cut to the heart of what Everett was trying to say in his novel? Or are they good cuts in service of the economy of film? Is the basis of satire in the 20-year-old book -- the interest of white audiences in Black "struggle" literature -- still current now that more middle class Black authors have access to publishing houses? Did the movie miss an opportunity to pick a new target -- say, the BLM protest to hype-house grift? Or does it capture a still-relevant critique of Black elites and the stories that make them rich? Episode 153 – A quick Hip Hop Ginger Shot Pt. 3 This will be the last “shot” in the series that focuses on the 50th anniversary of hip hop culture. I do a quick confessional of what I am feeling and why I was hesitant to release this episode. I give you two movie reviews. One of them on the “One Four” Documentary on Netflix. I give you a review of the New “Godzilla Minus One.” I talk about Diddy and the recent headlines about him. I spend time on the article by Jason England entitled “50 Years later: Is there anything left of hip hop?” Read the article before listening to the podcast, though. Pass it along and check it out twice. Tell your moms about it. So much of the coverage of hip-hop's 50th birthday has been congratulatory, in spite of its record of misogyny and anti-LGBTQ sentiment. In this episode of Into It, host Sam Sanders talks to journalist Kiana Fitzgerald about how the women of hip-hop are leading the way today, and he catches up with hip-hop scholar Jason England, who argues hip-hop's midlife crisis has left an empty shell of what the genre once was. So much of the coverage of hip-hop's 50th birthday has been fawning. Congratulatory. Devoid of meaningful critique. All that despite the fact that the art form has been soaked through with misogyny and homophobia from day one. So how do you celebrate hip-hop's accomplishments while asking it to do better? Sam talks to journalist Kiana Fitzgerald, author of Ode to Hip-Hop, on how the women of hip-hop are leading the way today… but at what cost? And he catches up with hip-hop scholar Jason England, assistant professor of English at Carnegie Mellon University, who argues hip-hop's midlife crisis has left an empty shell of what the genre once was. The 25BPS interest rate hike seems to be baked into the market and the FOMC meeting needs to state that the fight against inflation will continue. Jason England weighs in on this and notes whether Jerome Powell should say that they will be higher for longer. He will be asked how much credit tightening from banking stresses will substitute for rate hikes.
Portfolio Managers Dan Siluk and Jason England discuss how investors can navigate the short-duration opportunity set within fixed income now that bond yields have returned to attractive levels.

The former dean of an elite liberal arts university shares 8 things that he wishes people understood about his old job in admissions and its wide-ranging controversies. (01:12:05) This week’s question asks if financial aid works the same for students who are born in India but they have done their schooling in the US as it works for other international students. Dealt is a 2017 American documentary film directed by Luke Korem. The film is about the life and career of Richard Turner - who is renowned as one of the world's greatest card magicians, yet he is completely blind. It's a delightful documentary where the filmmaker stays out of it, and lets Richard and his family tell their story. And often Richard's hands do the talking. In the documentary, Richard traces his journey from his troubled childhood, when he began losing his vision, to present day as he relentlessly pursues perfection while struggling with the reality that his biggest weakness might also be his greatest strength. The film features extensive vérité footage of both Richard and his family as well as archive footage of Turner's many television appearances. The film features interviews with notable magicians including Turner, Johnny Thompson, Max Maven, Armando Lucero, and Jason England. Dealt debuted at the 2017 South By Southwest Film Festival in competition where it won the Audience Award for Best Documentary Feature. Dealt went on to win four more audience awards and screened at festivals around the world including China and New Zealand. The film is distributed by IFC Films through Sundance Selects. In the US, the film can be viewed on Hulu, Amazon and iTunes. Internationally, it is available on Netflix. --- Please Like/Subscribe/Follow and check out our https://youtube.com/danfrigolette for video content. ----- Covid 19 has spawned some wonderful free time, this podcast is a result of self-quarantine, we at Tiger Crisis vehemently implore you to do the same, #stayhome #staysafe #flattenthecurve Tiger Crisis begins by following the tribulations of Netflix's Documentary Series: Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness. Episode 27: Elliott heads over to Jason England’s house to discuss how Jason got interested in sleight of hand card magic, and how that evolved into his interests in cheating techniques, impromptu magic, lock picking, and even computer security. Jason is one of the most knowledgeable magicians alive today, and if you only know him from his Foundations series, Sub Rosa, or his other gambling affiliations, you may be surprised by what he shares in this conversation. There's also some fun conversation about his voracious sweet tooth and his diving experiences in Japan. Enjoy!
Paul Wilson is much more than an award winning conjuror. He's a scam artist, movie consultant and television presenter. He has studied sleight of hand, cheating and conjuring since the age of eight. He consulted on the 2004 Sylvester Stallone film "Shade" in which he directed and starred in the highly acclaimed opening titles which featured his expert sleight of hand with cards. Join us for a very thoughtful interview with magician Paul Wilson on this episode of the Magic Newswire's "Spirit of Magic" podcast!
Was he Milton Franklin Andrews, Wilbur Edgerton Sanders, E.S. Andrews, L'Homme Masque, or S.W. Erdnase? The search for the author of one of the most seminal works on the card manipulation is among the most hotly debated topics in the world of conjuring research. On this episode of the "Spirit of Magic" podcast, I am joined by guest co-host Jason England and special guest Richard Hatch. Richard is widely recognized for his research on the topic of Erdnase and the book "Expert at the Card Table." If you regularly perform close-up magic with cards, then you are certain to have been influenced by this book whether or not you are aware of it. We may just scratch the surface of this fascinating topic in this episode, but it is a fascinating and educational conversation that you need to hear.
Who was S.W. Erdnase? Most likely, anyone reading this knows this name as the pseudonym used by the author of "The Expert at the Card Table" which is arguably one of the most important books ever written on sleight of hand with cards. On this episode of the "Spirit of Magic" podcast, I am joined by David Ben & Julie Eng of Magicana and the publishers of Magicol. Yes, we do discuss who David, Richard Hatch and others believe to be the man behind Erdnase, but we also discuss the most recent online exhibition from Magicana, "EverythingErdnase.com" which was developed with the help of Jason England and which examines the many ways in which Erdnase has been presented in print since it first appeared in 1902.
Jason England is one of magic's leading experts on all things Erdnase. Recognized as an authority on casino gambling, specifically, cheating with cards. He has some of magic's most dangerous hands. Influenced by Steve Forte, Richard Turner, Dai Vernon, and Darwin Ortiz, Jason is an amazing resource. This interview was recorded just over eighteen months ago, I had thought that this interview had been lost in a hard drive crash. I'm thrulled to have been able to breathe new life into it and share it with you today.
