It seems odd for the founder of West Ham's LGBTQ+ supporters group to come from family containing plenty of Spurs fans – but that's exactly what happened with Jim Dolan. In fact, that seems to be a running theme amongst the folks at Pride Of Irons – because Jim's co-chair Jo Bailey also has a smattering of Spurs fans in her family (although as you'll hear from the recording, not the huge amount I may have implied!). Either way, both Jim and Jo ended up as passionate West Ham fans – and this is an absolutely cracking episode that we think you're going to love about their respective journeys in football, and the growth of Pride of Irons. There's so much good stuff on tap for this one – the passion and highs-and-lows of following your team; visibility in football; why Jim started tweeting about being an LGBTQ+ West Ham fan and how that led to Pride of Irons; how Jo discovered it and what it mean to her; being embraced by your club; West Ham's season so far and so much more. It's honestly a brilliant chat that we really think you'll like it – and we're hugely grateful to Jim and Jo for taking the time. How do you find your voice and tell your story as a leader? How do your faith and personality intersect so that you can become the leader God created you to be? Today’s podcast dives into how we can embrace how God wired us with the story He’s woven into us to share.   In this episode, Holly and I talk with Abbey Jo Bailey about the importance of listening, understanding your personality, and taking risks. Abbey is a wife, mom of two small children, and the director of communications at her church.   If you’ve ever experienced an abrupt career change, shifted how you’ve viewed leadership,  or wondered how to embrace your identity in Christ, this interview is for you.   Tips for Storytelling Abbey believes that there is power in storytelling and using story to lead people toward Christ. Abbey is leading her church and team through a storytelling process.   We discuss how Abbey has taken on the communications role at her church, and how she has experienced different seasons in her life and leadership.   Here are her best practices for telling your story:   Know where you want people to go. You need to be aware of where you’d like to take people in the journey. Read “Story Brand” by Donald Miller. As this book indicates, the hero is never you in the story; you are simply the guide in the story. Submit the outcome to God.   “Every person involved in ministry should read Storybrand.” - Esther Grab Storybrand on Amazon (affiliate link)   Abbey shares how submitting the outcome of her work to God has helped her to stay focused on people rather than the process being her primary focus. We chat about how this requires surrender and acknowledging that we are not in control of how things turn out.   Connect with Abbey: Instagram Join the Purposeful Leadership FB Group where Abbey is a member   Starting out as Bossy Big Sister, turned driven student and success-seeking professional, Abbey’s leadership path has been ever-changing. It was a steady rise up the corporate ladder until an abrupt change of plans led to a season of redefinition. As she became a wife and mother her professional motivations began to change and with that, her view of leadership.   In her current role as Communications Director, Abbey collaborates with ministry leaders to tell the story of their Church and to encourage the Church to care about the stories of people who may be disconnected from or not yet know God. She is a self-described social media scroller, aspiring yogi or runner depending on the day, fueled by coffee and Jesus, and repeatedly saved by grace. Outside of work Abbey is spending time with her family, including her four year old “dinosaur trainer” son, nine month old blue-eyed beauty, and her 30-something fitness-focused husband. Jo joined me on the podcast back in episode #38 in November 2017. In that conversation, we discussed Jo’s background and history, why she started running at 35 and the way in which she’s struggled with comparison, feeling like an imposter as well as how it took years for Jo to call herself an ‘athlete’ and mean it. If you haven’t listened to that episode, I’d encourage you to listen to episode 38 first. Almost one year to the day later, Jo and I pick up where we left off and cover the events, and lessons, of the last 12 months. Since we last spoke, Jo has finished her 1st 100mi (160km) race. Then, in January this year, Jo discovered she’d won a lottery spot to enter one of the world’s most famous ultramarathons; Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc (or UTMB), an incredible 100mi / 160km race that passes through France, Italy and Switzerland as you run around the Mont Blanc massif (yes, you literally run around the mountain!) Sadly, Jo’s race at UTMB didn’t turn out the way she wanted after she missed a cut-off around the 100km mark. So what happens when your biggest fear comes true? That’s what I explore with Jo in this conversation. Jo Bailey is just like you and I. An age group athlete and busy mum who only discovered running in her mid-30s. Since then, she's completed 9 ultra-marathons and is about to attempt her first 100mi/160km race through the Victorian Alps. Jo has openly discussed her struggles with the Imposter Complex and comparison, her fear of coming last and the “stories she tells herself” about her speed on her blog and on social media so I knew she would be the perfect guest for the podcast. We also talk about how being a runner has changed her as a woman and mother, how she’s come to proudly own the fact she is an athlete as well as her mental state ahead of her first 100mi/160km race.
