Learning vs. Acquisition: What Matters More? 1. Learning (Conscious Knowledge):Rules, grammar, and vocabulary studied deliberately.Example: Memorizing verb conjugations from a textbook.2. Acquisition (Subconscious Knowledge):Internalized language you use without thinking (like your native tongue).Example: Speaking fluently in conversations.Science says: Focus on acquisition—it's how we naturally master languages. How Acquisition WorksComes from understanding messages in context.Requires comprehensible input (language slightly above your level but mostly understandable). Why Apps Often Fail? Most apps teach through:Repetition without real-world application.Translation-based drills (inefficient).Better alternatives:Online teachers who speak only the target language (no translation).Tools like Pimsleur that prompt direct responses in the language. The Baby Method: Learn Like a Native SpeakerChildren acquire language by:Listening to slow, clear speech paired with visual context (e.g., pointing to an apple while saying "apple").Focusing on meaning—not grammar rules.Absorbing stories and real-world interactions.Key Insight:Grammar is acquired subconsciously through exposure, not memorization.Example: You learned English grammar by reading books, not studying textbooks.Grammar: Stop "Learning" ItProblem: Explicit grammar study doesn't lead to fluency.Students forget rules when speaking.Mistakes persist because the brain prioritizes meaning over correctness.Solution:Get comprehensible input (95% understandable content).Grammar sticks automatically when you focus on messages, not rules.Vocabulary: Ditch FlashcardsWords are acquired:Incidentally: Through reading/listening to engaging content.Incrementally: By inferring meaning from context.Example:Read a sentence with 1–2 unknown words.Guess the meaning from context or ask for clarification.Result: Vocabulary enters your subconscious effortlessly.Actionable Steps to FluencyPrioritize input over output: Listen/read before speaking.Choose compelling content (interesting podcasts, books, shows).Seek "i+1" input (slightly challenging but mostly comprehensible).Avoid translation—think directly in the target language.Embrace mistakes—they're part of acquisition.Key TakeawaysAcquisition > Learning: Fluency comes from understanding, not memorization.Babies are the model: Focus on meaning, not rules.Input matters most: Engage with content you mostly understand.Patience pays off: Grammar and vocabulary emerge naturally.Final Tip: Spend 80% of your time on comprehensible input (reading/listening) and 20% on speaking/writing.Why This WorksBacked by Stephen Krashen's Input Hypothesis (language acquisition theory).Mimics how humans naturally learn first languages.Proven by polyglots and immersion-based programs. My Video: How to REALLY Learn Languages https://youtu.be/R_w4YfMkCPgMy Audio: https://divinesuccess.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/Podcast4/How-to-REALLY-Learn-Languages.mp3
I became fluent in Spanish in 4 months. Here is how I did it, and the good news is, it's something that you can do too! It's a basic, easy method that anyone can do. But it's not exactly a thing that you'd expect. I am currently studying Swedish with this same method to great success. Check it out! What language do you want to learn? In this episode of She's Not Done Yet: Conversations with women over 50, I (Becky Berry) talk with Beverly Pimsleur. After listening to the podcast, Beverly reached out to me to share her story. Beverly is the embodiment of She's Not Done Yet. She's in her late 70's, has written a memoir and is looking for an agent, and is keeping busy as an activist for the Democratic Party. We had a wide ranging conversation covering the political situation in the Ohio college where she was a professor after the Kent State massacre (1972), widowhood, taking over her husband's business as a widow in the 80's, the importance of constant activism, and we compare abortion stories that happened across a generation (Beverly's in 1962 and mine in 1982). We decided that there's no arc to activism, instead, it's a straight line in the geometric sense - the line never ends. Thanks in Advance for your help: I hope you enjoy this episode. Joy has always been a part of Beverly Pimsleur's life. Her extended family in Louisville KY loved to be together, to dance, sing and have fun.She recognized the importance of language from a young age and started learning French in high school. She met her husband, a French professor, on a blind date in her twenties and changed her plans about living in France in order to marry him, anticipating they would someday live there together — which theydid. She became fluent in 4 different languages and believes in the importance of teaching English as a 2nd language.Paul was the creator of the Pimsleur Language Program. When he died at 48, Beverly, alone with two young children, returned to New York and, with a colleague of her late husband, continued to develop the business. Simon & Schuster eventually purchased the company. Life with her 2nd husband, Peter, was quite different. They moved to Nice for 12 years, where he died of a genetic disease. Beverly turned to tango as a release for her grief and dance became an obsession. With her children married, she traveled the world, dancing until she was 82. Her passions are multi-faceted and include cooking, traveling, writing and publishing. "I'm afraid I'm not going to have enough time for all the things I want to do."

What a great show we have in store from Chris and Sara. Chris and Sara have been documenting their travels for many years and have traveled all over the world. It was interesting to learn that although they had remote jobs, they weren't sold on the fact they could travel until they ended up in Thailand and had an AH-HA moment that they could work from anywhere. In this episode, learn all about: Routines While Chris prefers a routine, Sara likes to mix things up. Living in a van or truck camper allows Chris and Sara the best of both worlds. Since they can fit most of their routine essentials in their vehicle (workout and cooking equipment), they can still follow a routine throughout their day. At the same time, they are mobile and can pick up and move to a new location. Chris and Sara found that this style works best. When they are in hotels or Airbnbs, they have a difficult time keeping up with their routine because they have to venture to a gym or find a new place for breakfast and a cup of coffee. Van Life Chris and Sara pointed out that van life isn't as glamorous as it is made out to be. They are glad that more and more influencers seem to be showing the not-so-pleasant sides of this lifestyle. Their biggest struggle used to be internet, but Starlink has been a game changer for them. One of their biggest pieces of advice before starting out is to rent something. This way, you'll be able to figure out exactly what you need and how big your van needs to be. They quickly realized their first van was more space than they needed, so they swapped that for one that was 5' shorter. Money Tips Like most travelers, fuel is their largest expense. To combat this, Chris and Sara have found that staying put can lower their expenses by reducing or eliminating their fuel cost. On top of that, they like to hunker down in remote areas in the west, and in those dispersed camping areas they often don't have to pay to camp. These two strategies have made van life very affordable for them. Renting Their Home During the pandemic, Chris and Sara bought a house because they weren't sure what was going to happen with the world. They also needed a space to build their second van. Since they travel so often, they have used their home as a source of income by renting it on Airbnb. We shared stories of some of the headaches with renting your home out as well as some systems you can put in place to ensure you bring in the right guests. Chris and Sara are also in favor of the idea renting their home out on a more medium-term basis, using Furnished Finder to host travel nurses. Medium or short-term renting allows them flexibility to get back their home if they need to, as opposed to someone who has a year-long lease. Having a Home Base Chirs and Sara mentioned that it is nice to have a home base even they though travel full time. Being able to reset, have their own shower and laundry facilities, and just a place to veg out for a bit is refreshing. Plus, it reignites some of that excitement before they head back out, as opposed to if they were constantly traveling. Current Travel Frustrations One of their top travel frustrations for Chris and Sara is the language barrier when they are visiting foreign countries. To combat this, they take advantage of apps such as Google Translate or Pimsleur. Another frustration is dealing with a few clients who see that they are posting on social media. Although the pandemic helped bring familiarity with remote work, there are still some clients who give them a hard time because they believe they should be focusing on their project. Although they meet all their deadlines and Latergram, they can't make everyone happy. One piece of advice Chris offered was to separate this as much as they can, and even block your clients from seeing your social media posts. Expenses Balancing finances while traveling requires careful planning and budgeting. Health insurance premiums, coupled with the added expense of travel insurance, can quickly escalate costs. Chris and Sara have learned to prioritize their health and safety by investing in comprehensive insurance coverage. Additionally, they've encountered unexpected expenses, such as windshield repairs and tire replacements, due to extensive driving. By equipping themselves with the necessary tools and preparation, they mitigate financial burdens and ensure a stress-free journey. Medical Tourism Seeking medical care while abroad can be daunting, but Chris and Sara have discovered the benefits of medical tourism. Some people retire to countries like Costa Rica and Mexico, where healthcare is more affordable. Whether it's routine check-ups or specialized treatments, they've found peace of mind knowing that they can receive professional care without breaking the bank. Through careful research and planning, they've embraced medical tourism as a viable solution for their healthcare needs. Of course, do your own research before deciding on which country you wish to get your medical care done. Traveling with Pets As pet owners, Chris and Sara understand the challenges of traveling with furry companions. Certain destinations impose strict regulations, particularly regarding rabies-free policies. While navigating these restrictions can be cumbersome, they've found solace in pet-friendly countries like Korea, Brazil, and Mexico. Prioritizing their pet's comfort and well-being, they opt for car travel whenever possible, ensuring a stress-free journey for both themselves and their furry friend. By selecting airlines with pet-friendly policies and adhering to standard restrictions, they navigate pet travel with ease and confidence. Final Five What Can't You Live Without? · Shower · Passport What Have You Learned You Don't Need? · Extra clothes When Is the Right Time to Jump into Traveling? · There is no perfect time and everything is changeable. People can plan for an entire year, but they miss the spontaneity that comes with travel. What Could Someone Start Doing Today? · If you don't have a remote job, start working your way there. If you have a job where you can work remotely, you can maintain a travel lifestyle even longer. It's harder to prove to current job or boss that you can do it remotely if it isn't already remote. Episode 61 Hey there! This is Part 4 of the icipici edition of the Hungarian Living podcast on Getting Started with Hungarian. So, let me tell you, I have ALL KINDS of resources for learning Hungarian in my office. I have some oldies, like Irka Firka. I have curriculums from Debrecen and Pecs, I have a book and audio recordings from the Foreign Service Institute, and Pimsleur. Did I mention Complete Hungarian? Teach Yourself Hungarian? Hungarian the Easy Way? Hahahaha! Ok — That title cracks me up! Is there an easy way to Hungarian as an adult??? But really it isn't a bad resource. I just think it is a funny title. I have resources by Berlitz and Hippocrene and even some brainiac games for various ages. And, I have to mention Say it in Hungarian, Just Enough Hungarian the Hungarian Picture Dictionary, The Hungarian Bible for Children and countless dictionaries of all sizes. Cassette tapes? Cds? Mp3 files? Online links to programs? I've got em! So, let me just say that having resources is not my problem. I inherited about 75 % of the resources I have from my mom and the rest I have collected over the last 15 years or so. My mom knew how to speak, read, and write in Hungarian. She was an educator. And we caught a lot of Hungarian through the years, but she knew that it takes a special skill and/or training and a lot of patience to fully teach the Hungarian language. She also knew there were so many people struggling to learn it. She knew people could speak it but not know how to read and write it. And I have all sorts of projects she was collecting and working on as she was trying to figure out how to help solve the problem. Just because someone can speak and read and write in Hungarian doesn't mean they can teach it. For example, I speak English pretty well. But I am absolutely not an English teacher. In fact, I have learned a lot about the English language from my Hungarian instructors. Let's just say, English grammar wasn't my jam. There is something special about a person who understands and can explain things at my level. Not every trained teacher is a good one. And you don't have to be a trained teacher to be an effective one. So back to resources — I have enough resources. Having a few different ones is helpful because not every resource covers everything. Sometimes there is a concept that needs to be approached from a couple of different perspectives. There is no one curriculum or resource that does it all. And, just to clear the air up about a rumor – Rosetta Stone does not offer Hungarian. In addition to a few resources, I, personally, need two things. I need accountability. I need that steady appointment with another person. I need that commitment to connect with another person. I benefit from assignments, although I must confess, I don't always do them. And even though I am most often a visual learner, I need the Hungarian language in my ear in addition to being able to see the words and play with the letters. But, I also need a little skin in the game. It is worth it to me to pay out a little money because I know I will show up, even if I am not in the mood. And, a laborer is worthy of his hire. If someone is going to take time out of their day for me, I need to be there and not waste their precious time. And, I should be willing to pay them for their time. What resources do you have hanging around. Drag them out and dust them off. How can they be useful to you in your desire to study Hungarian? I know they can be useful. You just need to use them! But don't discount that regular, weekly appointment with a s

This time I read my 2022 paper in Review of Philosophy and Psychology titled, "Great Minds Do Not Think Alike: Philosophers' Views Predicted by Reflection, Education, Personality, and Other Demographic Differences". As the title suggests, various psychological factors predicted variance in philosophers' answers to classic philosophical questions. This raises questions about how psychological and demographic differences can explain philosophical differences. There are also implications for scientific psychologists as well as academic philosophers. As with all of my writing, a free preprint can be found on my CV at byrdnick.com/cv under "Publications". Are you looking to grow your business to $1 million and beyond? In part 2 of this interview with Julia Pimsleur she dives deeper into the secrets of starting, scaling and funding your business venture. Pimsleur founded Little Pim, the #1 language learning system for young children, and raised more than $6 million in angel and venture capital. She also launched Million Dollar Women, a social venture that empowers thousands of women entrepreneurs to scale up their business. Tune in to Million Dollar Monday to hear more. Check out Part 1 HereChapter Summaries01:18-Introducing Julia02:24-Scalable Model04:42-Three Critical Questions12:30-Finding Money to Start a Business17:43-Mission of Million Dollar Women20:17-How to Prepare for Your PitchKey Takeaways So many people start a business out of passion or wanting to create something that they couldn't find on the market, but they don't always have the right coaching or business skills to figure out if it's scalable.Sometimes people have ideas for a business and with a slight tweak or with a slight pivot, they can dream bigger and have something that can scale.Investors care less about where you are today than where you're going. They want to see that you have a clear vision, marketing plan and how you would use the funds. A really successful business person should spend 80% of their time out of the office, networking, meeting, new people, growing all of that knowledge and relationships. It's almost like the tango - Very maneuvered steps. You can't make it up, you can't ad lib – fundraising is the same way. So before you go network, before you go meet people, read a couple books on fundraising. People only remember 7% of what you say, 15% of what they remember is your body language. And then the bulk of it is just your tone, how you present your presence.Resource LinksJulia Pilmseur Website Million Dollar Women CommunityLinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook Book: Million Dollar WomenBook: Go Big Now: 8 Essential Mindset Practices Podcast: Million Dollar Women Podcast Follow us on Youtube!
Do you have a big goal or idea but feel something has been holding you back from accomplishing it? In today's interview with Julia Pimsleur, you will discover how having a “Go Big Now Mindset” is the key to achieving great success. Julia Pimsleur is the author of Go Big Now and the bestselling book Million Dollar Women. She is a master practitioner and coach of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and the founder of the Million Dollar Women social venture. Pimsleur also built the #1 language teaching company for kids, Little Pim, into a multi-million dollar business. Take a walk and listen to host Natalie Benamou and Julia Pimsleur and find out how you can create your own "Go Big Now" mindset. We all experience thoughts that interrupt our progress to accomplishing our goals. Julia talks about how starting with "mind the gap is so important. There are 8 Mindset Keys in 'Go Big Now" here are the two most popular: >> Mind the gap – We need to create a gap between what happened to you and the meaning you make of it. >> Bust your limiting beliefs – breakthrough an unconscious belief you have about yourself that sabotages you, or keeps you from doing the big things you want to do. Mindset has been so important this past year and made a positive difference for so many women. “Having a stronger resilient mindset during the pandemic was the difference between going back to bed and saying, ‘I can't deal with any of this' or staying motivated, bringing your team along and taking care of your family and helping others.”-Julia Pimsleur Increase Your Brain's Dopamine By Expressing Gratitude >> When we pay it forward and do a kind act, it impacts our own well-being. >> Practice gratitude daily and share 3 things you are grateful for, every day. Julia Pimsleur has dedicated her career to breaking norms and revolutionizing the entrepreneurial world for women. After building her own multi-million dollar company and raising $6 million in angel and venture capital, Pimsleur launched Million Dollar Women, a social venture committed to empowering women to reach $1 million in revenues. Pimsleur shares her insights and expert advice with Host Greg Muzzillo in this episode of Million Dollar Monday.Chapter Summaries01:20 - Introducing Julia Pimsleur03:11 - Little PIM06:06 - Game Changer08:35 - Raising Venture Capital11:08 - The Roller Coaster Ride of Entrepreneurship14:07 - Scaling a Business VS Growing a Business17:06 - The Power of Your Mindset18:50 - Million Dollar Women21:58 - Role of CEO & MomKey Takeaways I came up with the idea of a language-teaching program for kids since there was no one doing it. Women own 40% of the small businesses in this country. So there are about 13 million small business owners that are women and that we generate about 1.7 trillion for the economy. But if you look at these businesses, they tend to stay small. So 90% of women run businesses make under $100,000 and zero employees only two to 3% of women entrepreneurs ever get to 1 million in revenues.I tell people there's only three phases of getting really rich. Number one is fear. You start something, you're scared, and you work to some level of getting to pay off the credit card debt. Then you get too comfortable where you're not worried anymore that you're going to lose your house or have your cars towed out of your driveway. And you have to keep changing and growing to get too wealthy. And some people just either don't dream big enough or they don't act on those dreams.I created Million Dollar Women, a social venture helping thousands of women across the country, scale up their businesses and get to a million in revenues.Resource LinksJulia Pilmseur Website Million Dollar Women CommunityLinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook Book: Million Dollar WomenBook: Go Big Now: 8 Essential Mindset Practices Podcast: Million Dollar Women Podcast >>> Follow us on YouTube

Dan Roitman is the founder of Stroll, an eCommerce platform company that specialized in marketing education products. Through Stroll, Dan turned Pimsleur into the second largest language learning platform in the US, and close to a $100 Million product line. For seven years in a row, his company that he started in his college dorm room was on the Inc. 5000 list, the Philadelphia 100, and Internet Retailers top 500 list. He's also been recognized as a ‘40 Under 40' by both Direct Marketing News and the Philadelphia Business Journal For a ten-year period, Stroll had an annual growth rate of over 70%. The company became an $80 million professionally managed organization with more than 125 employees. Dan had a fascination with personal development products that began in college when he needed to quickly learn how to build and manage a business. He was able to self-fund the growth of Stroll through his own constant commitment to business improvement and the ability to leverage sophisticated marketing analytics and advanced e-commerce techniques. To quote Dan…. “I realized the only way to succeed would be to leverage the few dollars at hand. I had access to several third-party testing and optimization tools. All I needed to do was monitor and assure an ROI on every advertising dollar invested so that I could ultimately optimize my results until I was successful. Analytics and optimization became my rallying cries—a means to lift me from my own disaster and build a quickly growing business. Today, Dan is focused on his early education business, MindFinity, and also mentors high-growth entrepreneurs in his spare time. Dan sold Stroll a few years back. We're going to talk about that today, on top of Dan's mindset and high-performance tips, along with his new venture MindFinity. 05:57: Being Ruthless with Your Time Podcast Episode About Being Ruthless w/Your Time 13:57: Starting Stoll in His College Dorm 17:58: Ensuring Every Dollar Put Into a Business is Profitable 27:37: Matching Values in Business 33:42: How Dan Viewed His Largest Competitor Not as a Competitor At All 42:42: Contribution Margin vs. Profit Margin 50:08: Finding Contentment in Current Work Projects 51:49: Dan on Meditation 59:47: High-Performance Tips from Dan Roitman Contact Info: https://mindfinity.com/ Dan on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/danroitman/ Subscribe to the Podcast: Website: https://www.thebusinessmethod.com/dan-roitman Apple Podcasts: http://bit.ly/TheBusinessMethod Google Podcasts: http://bit.ly/TheBusinessMethodGooglePodcasts Spotify: http://bit.ly/SpotifyTheBusinessMethod

Are you the kind of person who sets New Year's resolutions? Like many Americans, Jonathan used to set weight loss goals for the new year, but not this year. Instead, he and his accountability partner, JD Roth, spent the previous nine months working on it and began the year, at or very close to their goal weight. Not having to work on big weight loss goals is allowing Jonathan to be aware and focus on testing smaller adjustments that will make him feel better and have more energy. Brad once had an experience while on vacation that made him realize how his normal diet was causing him joint pain. He wasn't even aware he had joint pain until one day it was gone. It was only then that he understood he had a problem that needed to be worked on. When you live an examined life, you don't have to accept the things that are reducing your capacity to function as normal. Brad thought his morning smoothies were a healthy choice, but it turns out the negative impact was a sugar crash necessitating an afternoon nap. It wasn't something he noticed until he stopped the daily smoothie routine. The examined life concept can be applied to your personal finance life as well. It's not as much a goal as it is a mastery of process. Brad embraces James Clear's concept of setting up systems that work in his life versus setting goals. He has set up eight different things he wants to accomplish as a part of a system with checkpoints along the way. In an attempt to develop two new habits, Brad is habit stacking. With habit stacking, you take one habit you have and combine it with another you want to create. Brad has combined his desire to become more fluent in Japanese with moving more during the day by taking walks around the neighborhood while listening to the Pimsleur language learning app. It's not perfect, but it's a system that is working for him. Brad is also following the advice of Chris Guillebeau and conducting his own annual review. This annual review sets the big picture, the intentions, the purpose, and outcomes. It then breaks life down into different areas where concrete goals may be set, such as self, health, family, community, travel, and others. While neither has large plots of land in suburban Richmond, VA, Jonathan and Brad have both contemplated starting some sort of micro garden. Listener James wrote in to say that he's been able to cut down on his grocery bill by going a whole year eating only vegetables he's grown himself. James says knowledge isn't needed. Just try growing things. You'll learn as you go. Also, grow what you are actually going to eat. Kale is great, but not if you won't eat it. And finally, squash is king as it produces pounds and pounds of food. Start with a 4'x4′ or 6'x6′ plot of land and plant 2 summer squashes and 2 winter squashes two feet apart. Water the roots, not the leaves. If you don't have a yard, get creative like a friend with a yard, a community garden, or a local farm. In your own garden, build up your soil health with compost. When you are genuinely interested in learning, finding mentors willing to help can be easy. Jonathan's brother, Andrew who edits the podcast, has been interested in sustainable homesteading. Through the ChooseFI Facebook groups, he has found a community to learn from and is getting free room and board in exchange for work. You get so much power and understanding in your own life just by understanding the concepts of FI. You don't need to be at your FI number to achieve power and autonomy in your life. It starts the moment you decide to make small changes to make your life better. Neither Jonathan nor Andrew have reached FI, yet for all intents and purposes, they are living a financially independent lifestyle. The goal isn't to have the most money, it's to be post-money, which is beyond the point where money matters. What do you want your life to look like, and what do you need to pull that off? Suzanne sent in a question about expense ratios. She didn't know where to look to find out how much she is paying across their various investments. First, there may be a fee attached to the fund for it being executed the way it is, known as the expense ratio. Second, if access to the fund is through a financial manager, there could be an assets under management fee. The impact these fees can have on your investments is enormous. They can cost an investor millions of dollars over a 40-year time frame. Brad suggested Suzanne google the funds' names or ticker symbol and expense ratio, such as “VTSAX expense ratio”. The result should be just one or two clicks away. To reduce costs, long-term investors should use a commission fee platform to purchase funds, such as M1 Finance when investing outside of your employer. Just ask Jonny Coreson and he will be the first to tell you that life and business are just like a game of Jenga! If you pull the wrong block or making the wrong business decision it can prove catastrophic. Likewise, if you manage to get that block out ok there is always a chance you could place it incorrectly or implement a business strategy poorly, same results… blocks all over the place. In this episode, Jonny teaches us that just like in Jenga it is just as important in life and in business that we pick up the pieces, rebuild, and keep playing! Failures in life are opportunities if you see them and treat them as such! IN THIS PARTICULAR EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: Jonny is a Co-Founder of an online comprehensive training program specifically designed to provide US Navy Sailors with a placement exam study platform that they can take anywhere! Bluejacketeer is a system specifically designed by Sailors to help Sailors prepare for the Navy-wide Advancement Exam. This system leverages the benefits of a learning technique known as Spaced Repetition (SR). This learning technique is typically used by individuals who need to efficiently learn a massive amount of information. SR is most commonly used to acquire new languages and was built into the very fabric of companies like Duolingo, Pimsleur, and of course Anki. The study environment Jonny and his team created help you retain information in your long-term memory using the Spacing Effect. According to Wikipedia, the definition of the Spacing Effect is: “The phenomenon whereby animals (including humans) more easily remember or learn items when they are studied a few times spaced over a long time span (spaced presentation) rather than repeatedly studied in a short span of time (massed presentation)”. Simply put, the longer you can wait to see a question again and still answer it correctly, the better. Bluejacketeer was built behind the idea of using Spaced Repetition and the Spacing Effect as the key advantage of remembering massive amounts of information pertaining to the advancement exam. I sure wish I had something like this in the ARMY!! How did the guests on "Million Dollar Mind" get their powerful mindsets? What tools and techniques allowed them to get a "make it happen" mindset? In this episode, Julia Pimsleur teaches the principle of "limiting beliefs" and why yours are probably keeping you from reaching your goals. Pimsleur shares an easy four-step process to "bust" limiting beliefs. Once you find the belief holding you back, you can come up with a new more empowering one, and get unstuck. Take a listen and get ready to bust through your own limiting beliefs - it's easier than you think!
Julia Pimsleur is Founder & Chief Empowerista at the social venture she founded, Million Dollar Women (MDW). MDW has four main programs – an online business school, Mingle & Mentor events in NYC, an annual Million Dollar Women Summit for women entrepreneurs and scholarships for women of color entrepreneurs, who face even greater obstacles in scaling up. See www.millionwomen.us. Prior to Million Dollar Women, Pimsleur was the Founder/CEO of Little Pim, the leading language teaching system for young children. During her nine years as CEO, Pimsleur raised angel and venture capital and discovered that fewer than 3% of all women entrepreneurs reach $1M and less than 4% of venture capital is invested in female founders. To help change those stats, she taught women how to fundraise and wrote her best-seller, “Million Dollar Women: The Essential Guide for Female Founders Who Want to Go Big” (Simon & Schuster). The Million Dollar Women book was read by over 10,000 women and motivated Pimsleur to leave Little Pim, get trained as an NLP master practitioner coach, and create the Million Dollar Women Masterclass. Pimsleur still serves on the board of Little Pim. Since it launched, MDW Masterclass has graduated over 200 women. Many have reached $1M in revenues and now mentor in the Million Dollar Women community. Pimsleur also created the Sales CURE to teach entrepreneurs how to become “killer closers.” Pimsleur has been featured on Today, NBC Weekend Today, Forbes, CNBC, Business Week, The Wall Street Journal, and The New York Times. Awards include Smart CEO Brava! Award for women entrepreneurs and the Axiom Business Book Award. Pimsleur speaks frequently on entrepreneurship, women in business, mindset mastery, fundraising. The Simple Sophisticate - Intelligent Living Paired with Signature Style
~The Simple Sophisticate, episode #204 ~Subscribe to The Simple Sophisticate: iTunes | Stitcher | iHeartRadio | YouTube The Harvard Business Review pointed out in 2011 that there are many networks we each need in our lives to be successful. Looking at this concept from a business perspective, HBR shared that a manager and leader needs three networks to be successful: operational, developmental, and strategic. As I shared in this post written in 2014, whether at work or at home or while playing, we are our own brand. How we live our lives is a message to the world at large and more powerfully to those we share our lives with, so I wanted to incorporate these three networks into both our professional and personal lives. In successful entrepreneur Julia Pimsleur's book Million Dollar Women, she shares that while women tend to have strong personal networking skills, it is their professional networking skills that must be strengthened. Modeling what she encourages readers to do, Pimsleur's nonprofit and for-profit earnings of more than $20 million dollars demonstrate she knows how to network and network well. Offering masterclasses, coaching and workshops, understanding how to network and the importance of doing so is a skill, and we can all learn how to master it. It is important to note, in order to be successful in our careers, we must have our personal lives well-structured as well. And we cannot do it all if we want to do it well, so we must build what I am calling a Life Network that will optimize both our professional and personal lives. Today, I'd like to break these three networks down, and while using the definitions of each given by HBR, I will be applying them to both aspects of our lives. As I examined my own life, I made a list of all of the people, businesses, groups I interact with through any given year. Some I will see more often than others, some will only be once a year, but all of them are essential parts of my Life Network. I then added a few more to each list that may be individuals most people in certain walks of life need to thrive. Now there may be other networks you need or have in your life, so I have included the definition of each of the networks so that you can decide in which group they would fall based on what they bring into your life. Operational definition: people you need in your day-to-day life; whose work you depend to do your work; these individuals do not work for you, but the work they do for you is what you depend on (as you cannot do it yourself) for success. Home experts: house cleaning, maintenance (plumber, contractor, lawn care, etc.) Accountant Web Designers Illustrator Editor Lawyer Real Estate Agentlandlord, loan officer, bank officers Hair Stylist Aesthetician (waxing, facials, nails, etc.) Veterinarian Dog Groomer Dog Sitter Babysitter/Daycare House Sitter Assistants (virtual or in office) Even if you are not currently in the market to buy a house or maybe you are not working on a project with the contractors you will hire, maintaining that relationships, being cognizant that it is a relationship and being appreciative of it is the strength of your network. Whether it is the holiday extra tip that is given to your hair stylist, paying your bills on time when it comes to your accountant, editor or lawyer, being respectful of the reality that they are running a business, and having paying clients is what enables them to live and work and thrive, reveals how much you respect and appreciate the work they have done for you. Strategic definition: it is all about tomorrow, looking to the future, creating opportunities or the fertile soil for opportunities to reveal themselves. Sometimes this network will overlap with operationalPersonal Trainer Counselor Financial Advisor Doctor Dentist Supervisor in your field of business (i.e. administrator, manager, CEO, etc.) No one can predict the future, but the longer we are in our fields professionally, and the longer we live in this world, the more we understand the causes and effects of events that occur. While we may not know precisely when or exactly how they will unfold, we can know that the economy will ebb and flow. We can know that people retire and new team members will be added; we also know that our good health doesn't just happen and interest doesn't accrue unless we invest. Putting the odds in your favor by being preventative with your health, saving intelligently and early for your retirement, building strong relationships with people within your work environment is being aware that there will be a tomorrow and you want to put yourself in the best situation possible. Personal (HBR calls this network Developmental) definition: individuals to whom you can turn to for advice, to whom you can trust, a soft shoulder or sympathetic ear. These individuals help you consider best options for growth, improvement, reaching your full potential. 6 Types of Friends (a healthy social circle) - learn more here Partner in life (spouse, boyfriend/girlfriend) Spiritual Advisor (religious leader, meditation instructor, life coach, yoga instructor, etc.) Mentor (also included in 6 Types of Friends, listed above) Equals in your field of business (fellow colleagues: bloggers, teachers, CEOs, etc.) Experts in other fields that don't compete with your field, but their business overlaps with yours Resource for new information about anything of value (industry news, cultural news, etc.) The premise of living well is to remain curious and continually seek new information. We are dynamic as human beings, and our world as well is dynamic. As much as we may want things to stay exactly as they are once we find a way of life that works best for us, we know that everything else is changing, and so too must we stay privy as well as a student of the world. However, the world can knock us down sometimes, so we must know where to replenish our strength as well as contribute positively to others' lives. So long as we remember we are always a work in progress and will always have the opportunity to grow should we choose, this network will enable us to do so in both our personal and professional lives. As someone who appreciates clarity where it is possible to have it, this list helps me not only be clear about what is necessary to reach my dreams, live securely and enjoyably, but also enable me to recognize that we are a part of a web of other people in this world, and we truly do not succeed on our own. While we may be have the dream, we need the team to help it come into fruition. While we may bring home the salary that pays the bills, we need to handle the money we work so hard for well, so that it serves us the best it possibly can. Lastly, so long as we are aware and appreciative, we will begin to build networks in all three areas that will improve the quality of our lives. ~SIMILAR POSTS/EPISODES YOU MIGHT ENJOY: ~Why Not . . . We've all heard the phrase ‘go big or go home,' but the sad truth is that many female entrepreneurs end up choosing the latter. Women are two times more likely to shut down their businesses due to a lack of capital, and despite the fact that there are 10 million female entrepreneurs in the US generating $1.4 trillion in revenue, only 3% of women-owned businesses hit the $1M mark. These are the statistics that inspired Julia Pimsleur to start the Million Dollar Women Movement, a venture dedicated to helping one million female entrepreneurs reach $1M in revenue by 2020. The movement encompasses an annual summit for high-growth women entrepreneurs, the Million Dollar Women Masterclass, as well as her book, Million Dollar Women: The Essential Guide for Female Entrepreneurs Who Want to Go Big. Pimsleur's work with Million Dollar Women stems from her experience as the founder and CEO of Little Pim, a foreign language learning program for young children and one of the few women-led venture capital backed companies in the US. The movement leverages the lessons she learned while scaling up Little Pim, and affords Pimsleur a platform to inspire and educate other women entrepreneurs in the areas of fundraising, sales and developing the ‘go big' mindset. Pimsleur is also an award-winning filmmaker, a trained NLP master practitioner coach and mother of two. When she isn't speaking or coaching Million Dollar Women, she can be found kicking a soccer ball in Central Park with her boys. Today she explains the vast gender gap in the entrepreneurial space and explores the reasons why women tend to downplay their strengths. Listen in to learn the benefits of networking and how to develop a ‘go big' mindset. Key Interview Takeaways There is a vast gender gap in the entrepreneurial space. Pimsleur was inspired to start the Million Dollar Women Movement when she learned that only 1.8% of women-run companies were getting to $1M in revenue in 2014, and only 4% of venture capital goes to businesses run by women. Pimsleur's big goal is to get one million women to $1M in revenue by the year 2020 by way of her book, Million Dollar Women, as well as the Masterclass and annual Million Dollar Women Summit. The three things you need to ‘go big' are mindset, skill set and network. Develop resilience, celebrate your strengths and get in the right rooms with the right people – and it's much easier to get to $1M. Women are socialized to downplay their gifts, but we must promote ourselves and offer our credentials right up front. If you have a PhD from Harvard, lead with that! Networking is key in making it to the next level. Though successful women are often fiercely independent, we must get outside our comfort zone and develop relationships with the right people – and that might mean attending Entrepreneurs' Organization events rather than having margaritas with our girlfriends. Develop a ‘go big' mindset. Visualize yourself running a multimillion-dollar company and know that it is possible. SUMMARY: Just ask Jonny Coreson and he will be the first to tell you that life and business are just like a game of Jenga! The study environment Jonny and his team created helps you retain information in your long-term memory using the Spacing Effect. Bluejacketeer was built behind the idea of using Spaced Repetition and the Spacing Effect as the key advantage to remembering massive amounts of information pertaining to the advancement exam. I sure wish I had something like this in the ARMY!! LINKS AND RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE: Bluejacketeer Begin Your Journey Towards Promotion Today! Site: http://www.audiobooks.com/podcast | Email: podcast@audiobooks.com Welcome back to the Audiobooks.com podcast! We are so excited to share with you some of the items on our reading list, discuss a bit of how narrators have impacted our audiobook choices, and hint as to what's coming next. We hope that by sharing some of the things we are reading (or listening to), it will encourage you to read them as well so that we can have a discussion about these audiobooks. There is plenty to discuss from a technical, or even entertainment, side of audiobooks, but here at the Audiobooks.com podcast we are avid book lovers. What good is discussing an audiobook without actually discussing what the book is made of? NEWS In August of 2015, Thug Notes: A Street-Smart Guide to Classic Literature was released. The book is written by Sparky Sweets, Ph. D., and the audiobook is narrated by Greg Edwards, running 6 hours and 19 minutes in length. Whether you know classic literature like the back of your hand, or you never have anything to comment on when the discussion is brought up in social circles, this book was written for everyone who has a funny bone. The book is based off a web series from 2013, hosted by the author, and are still available on YouTube (search for Thug Notes, you'll find it!). You might call it colloquial, insofar that it speaks in familiar conversation (depending on your definition of familiar), you might call it a parody, but it astutely finds its way to the heart of each piece of classic literature, makes the work appealing and comprehensible, and far less daunting. Maybe it'll make you actually want to read Crime and Punishment! UPCOMING It's still the beginning of September, but October is quickly approaching! As we finally start to bring out the sweaters and jeans, request pumpkin spice lattes at the cafe, and watch the leaves turn, it's also time to start thinking about the season of reading. Next month we'll be diving into some horror and suspense novels! The likes of Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Chuck Palahniuk, Dan Simmons… Or if you want to go a bit further back, the father of horror H. P. Lovecraft or Henry James. There are plenty of options, so stay tuned to hear what we're reading, and send us an email if you have a recommendation! IMPORTANCE OF THE NARRATOR In talking about possibilities for our horror and suspense kick in October, Addy shares that she was just not able to get into Stephen King's Finders Keepers, narrated by actor Will Patton. Patton has a very unique voice and is generally very crucial to the characters he plays on television and film. But this brought up a very interesting discussion of how a narrator can make or break a book. When a narrator's voice is too unique, does it turn you off? The face-off of narrators this week ended up being Wil Wheaton vs Will Patton, as Addy said it took no time at all to cruise through the first six chapters of Ready Player One narrated by Wil Wheaton. Brian expressed a concern, before beginning the audiobook himself, over whether he'd like Wheaton as a voice actor having enjoyed his presence in a little space odyssey you might have heard of… Star Trek? THE CONFIDENCE CODE In preparation for this week's episode, Addy listened to The Confidence Code: The Science and Art of Self-Assurance. The book was written by Katty Kay and Claire Shipman and released back in April of 2014. The audiobook is narrated by Sandy Rustin and runs 6 hours and 47 minutes. This book comes highly recommended by Addy, for women and men. Though the book is directed toward women, its truths aren't specific to women. Utilizing science and society's understanding of confidence, this book breaks down the different layers that comprise the often ambiguous state of being. Confused either with arrogance, when used in excess, or self-loathing, when not used at all, this book's usefulness comes in how it breaks down what confidence is, how our body uses it and interprets it, and why women use it so differently than men. Fair warning, it's a bit science-heavy. Technical terms aside, it's interesting, at the very least, to be clued in to how involved all the processes are. If you struggle with confidence, like many do, this book provides some reassurance that what is happening to your body occurs for a variety of reasons and that those reasons are conquerable! This book isn't a how-to, but it does assert that we are capable of learning to be confident. WHAT'S NEXT? Addy is learning Italian! Capitalizing on Audiobooks.com's supply of Pimsleur audiobooks, she will be working her way through those language helpers. And, in the meantime, Rework by Jason Fried is also in her queue (narrated by Mike Chamberlain). Brian is reading Ready Player One, as discussed, and we'll be ready to talk about that book in a week or two! He also got interested in Thug Notes and wants to start that audiobook as well. What's in your queue? Let us know! Show us some love!
