Technology built the cashless society. Advances are helping the unhoused so they’re not left behind

John Littlejohn remembers the days when lots of people had a couple of dollars to spare to buy a copy of Street Sense, the local paper that covers issues related to the homeless and employs unhoused individuals as its vendors. Today, he's finding fewer people are walking around with spare change. Even well-meaning individuals who want to help are likely to pat their pockets and apologize, he said. "I would be out here for six or seven hours and wouldn't get more than $12 to $15," said Littlejohn, 62, who was homeless for 13 years. "People are like, 'I don't leave the house with cash.'" But just as technological shifts helped create the problem, further advances are now helping charitable groups and advocates for the unhoused reach those most in danger of being left behind in a cashless society. A special Street Sense phone app allows people to buy a copy electronically and have the profits go straight to him. Thanks to Social Security and his income from Street Sense and other side gigs, Littlejohn now has his own apartment. One of the larger shifts in Western society over the past two decades has been the decline of cash transactions. It started with more people using credit cards to pay for things as trivial as a cup of coffee. It accelerated as smartphone technology advanced to the point where cash-free payments became the norm for many. The cashless world can be particularly daunting for the unhoused. While electronic payment apps such as PayPal or Venmo have become ubiquitous, many of these options require items beyond their reach — credit cards, bank accounts, identification documents or fixed mailing addresses. Charities have struggled to adapt. The Salvation Army has created a system where donors can essentially tap their phones on the kettle and pay directly. Michelle Wolfe, director of development for The Salvation Army in Washington, said the new system is only in place in 2% of the collection kettles in the greater Washington area, but it has already resulted in increased donations. The minimum cashless donation is now $5, and donors routinely go as high as $20, Wolfe said. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

How Do You Move Forward When Things Get Tough?  Balancing all the stepfamily things can be really overwhelming. And if you're like me, sometimes you just want to crawl back into bed and hit the "fast forward" button until things are calmer. Except they don't ever really get calmer, do they?  Today's guest, Michelle Wolfe, is in tune with that emotion. She's the host of the Muve Forward podcast, investor, and founder of MUVE Life Activewear.  If you like The Stepmom Diaries, can you do me a favor? Head to iTunes and leave me a review? It will just take a second and will help me reach even more stepmoms.  About Michelle: Losing her Mom to cancer as a child inspired Michelle to dedicate her life, to learning as much as possible about how to live a life that is both healthy and fulfilled. She's made it her mission to inspire others to take time to slow down and get in tune with their body, mind, and soul so that they too, can learn what it is that they need to move through any challenge they may be facing.  And she's done just that through her podcast, her amazing activewear line, and in her stepmom life. Michele knows that when we can relate to others and feel their heartache, but also receive the energy from their light, we can start on our own healing journey.  Throughout her 11 years as a Massage Therapist and years of self-development and mindset work, she's learned that one of the best ways to adapt to our ever-changing lives, is to just keep moving forward. Making one decision at a time, and taking one step at a time. She's the first to admit though, that it's not always an easy road. That's why she created a community where people can feel safe to share their stories of struggle and also what they found helped them grow and shift to get through it. Because when we can relate to others and feel their heartache, but also receive the energy from their light, we too can start on our own healing journey. Michelle is the host of The MUVE Forward Podcast, the founder of MUVE Life Activewear, a Stepmom, partner, and an investor. She speaks on topics such as mindset, self-development, health and wellness, and more. Michelle likes to deploy a good-vibes-only mindset wherever she goes. Rich Gall (@richggall) and Jennifer Riggins (@jkriggins) talk to privacy advocate Michelle Wolfe (aka "Stella" on Twitter) about the challenges of security and privacy in today's increasingly sinister landscape of surveillance capitalism. Taking in key terms (including the monstrosity that is "cyber"), and looking closely at some of the limits and flaws in the conversation around online security, Michelle/Stella explains how she approaches her work and why she thinks we need to reevaluate the way we talk about cybersecurity and online safety. She discusses some of the problems with the field, such as the perception that it's somewhat insular and elitist, and argues that we need to stop thinking about user fallibility as a problem, and instead urge greater accountability across the tech industry for the systems that are designed to confuse, dupe, or simply exhaust us.We also talk about the problems with EdTech, and examine exactly why so many private companies are eager for a piece of a sector that has never been particularly lucrative (hint: it's probably not altruism). While Michelle/Stella raises plenty of issues that we should be seriously converned about, it's not all doom and gloom: she also explains why she thinks the younger generation are a cause for optimism and hope when it comes to privacy and taking on big tech.Follow Michelle on Twitter: @RisuToInuRead her writing on her blog

Over the last 18 months, our social lives have been impacted. We have likely made new connections but have lost connection to some of the most important people in our lives. We have been forced to grieve and manage this ever-changing life in ways that we (for the most part) were NOT ready for. My guest today is Michelle Wolfe, and she is one of those charming, inspiring, high vibrational women who just makes you feel good about yourself. And so as soon as we became friends, I wanted to share her light with you all. Michelle is all about building community, sharing struggles and working together to help you MUVE forward. Her own personal struggles, her trauma, her grief have all lead her down a very dark road that had difficult and challenging impacts on her life. However, she was on a mission to do “the work” and knew deep down that life was bigger than the way she was experiencing it.   The foundation of her healing journey (and adapting to her ever-changing life) is to keep moving forward. Making one decision at a time, one move at a time, one step at a time.   The idea is that we don't get stuck in the past or project ourselves into the future… We stay present and keep moving forward in this moment. Time moves, and thus, so must we. So Michelle created something called The Muve Collective, which is an online space for women to share their stories, learn from others, connect with each other and be inspired by stories of overcoming struggle. How cool is that? Health and Wellness is her passion, a self-care advocate, a motivator and beautiful thought leader and today's episode is a fun, inspiring and genuine chat about life, our struggles and what is all means.   I think it's Michelle's goal in life to come together as strangers and leave as friends… so let's get into this episode so you can fall in love with her just like I did. Do you ever have those days, weeks or even seasons where your creativity muscle is just flowing? Well, the creative juices are flowing over here my friends and I am feeling so inspired to help you shift your energy too! Many of us know that as women, our monthly cycles have a heavy impact on our ability to be creative. There are times during our cycle where our bodies need us to simply rest and take it easy. During these times, it's often hard to listen to our bodies and relax more and just enjoy the downtime and let stress or worry flow from us. The changing seasons can also have this effect on us, and as a result, many of my clients have found themselves with a lack of energy and motivation this week. I see this often working as a health and wellness coach, and it made me realize that there are many other people out there that may be feeling this way too. Life happens, and inevitably we are going to experience the lows of it, but there are simple ways in which we can take action to help ourselves move forward to shift to a more positive and abundant state. When we have these seasons, it trickles down into so many other parts of our lives. For example, if you’re unhappy in your job or your relationship, you likely don’t have enough energy left to take proper care of your body, mind, and soul; further pulling you into a negative state and the cycle continues. My answer to each of my clients was the same on how to move forward, get focused and feel like themselves again. They are all so important, and today I want to share these things with you. I encourage you to TRY to incorporate them in your day to day life. I promise that you will start to see positive things happen for you again and you will be able to move through the rut you are currently experiencing. FIVE TIPS TO SHIFT YOUR ENERGY: DRINK WATER: Time and time again you will be reminded to drink water and time and time again you will forget, but! It is SO important, so I am here to remind you again. SELF LOVE: Many people who are struggling have issues with their mindset. Last week I sat down with the owners of @lovepowerandco, Lindy (@lindysood) and Anna (@_annalozano), and we talked about how important it is to have positive self-talk and to learn to love ourselves. Positive self-awareness will ensure that we are able to make the right decisions for our well-being. EATING FRUITS, VEGGIES, HEALTHY FATS AND PROTEINS: If you are stressing your body by eating unhealthy foods, it is inevitably going to cause sickness in your body. For example, you’re going to feel tired, lethargic, and overtime the negative effects of this will compound. MOVEMENT: Having movement every single day in any form you are able to is so important. If you are unable to get in a more physical movement, try incorporating massage or slow stretching so that your muscles and cells are exposed to stimulation. SLEEP: Now, if you’re a parent, this is going to be tricky. But regardless, it is so important that you do your best to give your body the rest it needs. Next time something is going on in your life, no matter how big or small, try paying attention to these 5 things. These are basic, but yet so, so important. Once we do become more mindful of these things, we can incorporate the missing piece into our daily practice again. As you do this, you will find that your body responds quicker and quicker to the various nourishment you are providing it; whether that be for the body, mind or soul. By taking small steps to move forward, you can make BIG changes in your life. If you’re interested in making a change, making a shift in your life, and moving forward I would love to coach you on your journey! Check out my website www.muvelife.com/the-muvement for more details on how to apply to work with me. Sincerely, Michelle Wolfe xo

Today I am joined by former School of Laughs students and full time comedians Jonnie W.and Brian Bates. Over some tasty BBQ we discuss the recent happenings in the world of comedy. Specifically, Michelle Wolfe and the White House Correspondents Dinner, Netflix Comedy Specials and the passing of a fellow comedian. THIS EPISODE IS SPONSORED BY PATREON SUPPORTER NEIL RITTLEAND THE CLEAN COMEDY CHALLENGE.   You would think that an occupation such as comedy would be relatively stress-free. After all, it's all about the laughs, right? Well, sort of yes and sort of no. You see every joke has a target. I could be the traffic, the drivers, the car or the police. Sometimes, the comedian hits on a target and the reaction is bigger than the joke. Or, even an unintended response from a misinterpreted punch line. Other times, the comedian is challenged for not being "sensitive" or "politically correct" with their material. Despite freedom of speech, as comedian is not free form judgement.   In today's world, we are quick to celebrate the mistakes of others. Comedy is no different. It makes it hard for the comedian to do their job when every word is picked apart and mass distributed over a network of trigger-happy-texters and social media rabble-rousers. What is a comic to do?   The three of us share our takes on  Michelle Wolfe  and the 2018  White House Correspondents Dinner  roast. The good, bad and ugly as well as the reaction, opportunity and results.   Also on the agenda is a quick discussion about the proliferation of NETFLIXcomedy specials. Is having so many specials good or bad for the comedy marketplace? Are great comedians putting out subpar specials just to grab a handful of cash? Am I only mad because I don't have a NETFLIX special?   And, finally, we talk about the long-lasting feeling of connection to other comedians. When one of our own passes away, we feel like we just saw them yesterday. But, we may not have worked with or talked to them in over a decade. What is it about the brotherhood and sisterhood of comedy that connects us? All of this and more in this episode of the Rik Roberts School of Laughs!
