Making it into and through medical school is tough even for those who have all the advantages: excellent schools starting at a young age, well-educated parents who may be doctors themselves, lots of role models and…white skin.  In this episode we hear from two pre-meds and one newly minted physician, all Black, about their journeys with few of these advantages.  Despite their remarkable optimism, their burdens are evident, and many do seem tied to race, as it is understood in the US. The extreme underrepresentation of Blacks in medicine should be a source of deep concern for the profession and for society, as a matter of social justice as well as patient care. The passion of these young men and woman is inspiring, and the mentorship opportunities provided by pipeline programs like the I Am Abel Foundation which has been central to their lives, offers hope. Sunstone is the longest and perhaps the most extraordinary poem by the extraordinary poet Octavio Paz. Sunstone is an epic poem, long and passionate, like a golden mantle in which to take shelter. A hypnotic torrent of images and signs dazzle and enchant us as we pass through each verse. The imagination is left spinning, intoxicated with pleasure. Sunstone is made up of hendecasyllables because hendecasyllables are the measure of the sonnet, the love poem par excellence in Latin languages. And they are 584 hendecasyllables because the planet Venus covers a cycle of 584 days to return to the same point in relation to the sun. This peculiarity was highly valued and studied by the Aztecs, who placed it at the centre of their cosmogony. And of that portentous and complex machine for reading the cosmos, the Sunstone, the Aztec Calendar. Let the music, the images and the many lights of the 584 lines of this prodigious love poem to life and its fragility carry you away. We are kicking off 2020 with a guest I have wanted to interview forever: Holly Whitaker, founder of Tempest Sobriety School and author of the fabulous new book Quit Like a Woman. If you’ve ever questioned your relationship with drinking or you're thinking about making a change for 2020, this episode is a MUST LISTEN. Today's topic is particularly personal. This is the first in a three-episode series about feminism and sobriety that I wanted to do, in part, to create some space to talk about my own recovery and to come out as a sober person and what that means as a feminist. (Have questions? Let’s talk!) Holly dropped so many mind bombs in this interview, it was almost impossible to edit. We talked about her story, why she tried and then left AA, and the origins of Tempest. We also dug into why our recovery culture needs a feminist overhaul and what it really means to “quit like a woman.” (Music by Ava Luna, Loyalty Freak Music, Katrina Stone, Rew, Space Doves, Borrtex, and Josh Leake.) Show for Mid-November brings you tape, coffee, chill-out moments and the most impressive music in the (experimental) ambient genre! Melodic adventures from past and present at the end of the year 2019 .... that’s right: a new decade is around the corner and we have a special request. Do you recognize the sound of the thing in my hands? … Totally impressed by the audio quality of old tapes, we’re going to make this a feature on future shows. It’s simply amazing how Ambient music from old tapes arrives in our ears….  a recent comparison of tape and the digital copy of a certain track made me decide to give my Technics Deck a place of it’s own in the studio. No more hiding in the closet! So what’s the audio about today? Musical contributions by Drome, Andrew Heath, Off Land, Off the Sky, Biosphere, Motionfield, Steve Roach, Kiphi, Josh Leake, Eguana. Listeners of the Nonstop®edition will agree: today’s tunes will be causing that magic again, best consumed in a nonstop flow. Something you won’t experience anywhere else but here at our station. Welcome to Spacemusic 11.21 “Noise of Art “,  an experience you will not easily forget. Enjoy! // ambient zone //

This episode defines my beliefs on the current state of the entertainment industry & entrepreneurship. I don't want it to motivate you. I don't want it to make you feel pumped up for a few minutes. Instead, I want to give you 3 things: Happiness, Gratitude & Perspective. Prioritize what makes you happy and where you want to take your life. Reverse engineer your actions around that. We need to talk about mental health. We need to talk about work ethic, and excuses. We need to have these conversations. So many people are afraid to put their viewpoints out there for a fear of being judged. This is simply my truth. What up, Get Up Nation? My name is Ben Biddick, the Host of the Get Up Nation Podcast and Co-Author of Get Up: The Art of Perseverance with former Major League Baseball Player and CEO of Lurong Living, Adam Greenberg. Recently I had the honor and privilege of speaking with Kasie Lynn, the Founder and CEO of Kasie Helps Kidz www.khkidz.org, a non-profit organization dedicated to children fighting cancer. She is a 2 time childhood cancer survivor who has taken her experiences as a child survivor and created an organization that strives to continuously provide children and their guardians with a strong support system during and after their battle against cancer. Her organization focuses on lifting the spirits of those currently undergoing treatments by providing them with teddy bears, pizza, and a movie night in the hospital. Kasie also facilitates other events where child cancer survivors can connect with peers to experience the strength and resilience that is generated by spending time with others who are facing similar challenges. In 2013, Kasie created the Kasie Helpz Kidz Financial Assistance Program which assists families with up to $500 per year in reimbursement for co-pays, medications, and travel expenses during their child’s battle with cancer. I am honored that she took time to share her journey with Get Up Nation. **** This podcast episode concludes with the song “Forever Be” by Katrina Stone.
