I'm thrilled to welcome to our show, Joshua M. Greene, who, in his own words, says he's spent much of his life's work “sharing extraordinary stories about extraordinary people.” Mr. Greene spent countless years practicing yoga and meditation with George Harrison, and eventually wrote “Here Comes The Sun,” a biography that chronicles the spiritual and musical journey of former Beatle. We'll ask him about that. Joshua is also a renowned Holocaust scholar and filmmaker, whose books have sold more than a half-million copies worldwide, including “Unstoppable,” “Justice at Dachau,” and books for young adults, including “The Girl Who Fought Back,” and “Signs of Survival, A Girl on Schindler's List.” We'll ask him about all of them. Mr. Greene is a popular lecturer who has spoken at the Pentagon, and his films and documentaries on Holocaust history have aired on PBS and Discovery. He's received numerous awards, including the Gold Metal at the NY International Film and TV Festival. On a personal note, Joshua M. Greene is married to Esther Lynn Fortunoff, of the famed Fortunoff family department store chain. They share a love of art and storytelling, two children, and an immensely eclectic and interesting life. Please join me in welcoming Joshua M. Greene on all video and audio podcast platforms of #DeborahKobyltLIVE. I'm your host, #DeborahZaraKobylt, and it's a pleasure to have you join us. In 1965, a seventy-year-old man—soon to be known as Prabhupada—set sail from India to America with a few books in his bag, pennies in his pockets, and a message of love in his heart. He landed in New York at the peak of the revolutionary counterculture movement of the '60s, and went on to spark a global spiritual renaissance that led to the creation of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, which has changed millions of lives. Through the depiction of Prabhupada as both an enlightened luminary and a personable, funny, and conscientious individual, Swami in a Strange Land shows why cultural icons such as George Harrison and Allen Ginsberg incorporated Prabhupada's teachings into their lives, and why millions more around the globe embarked upon the path of bhakti yoga in his footsteps. Carefully researched, skillfully crafted, and extraordinarily intimate, this narrative follows Prabhupada as he rises from an anonymous monk to a world-renowned spiritual leader. Set in locations as far ranging as remote Himalayan caves and the gilded corridors of Paris's City Hall, Swami in a Strange Land traces the rise of Eastern spirituality in the West—and in particular, the rise of yoga culture and vegetarianism and the concepts of karma and reincarnation. A remarkable journey into the deepest dimensions of the human experience, Swami in a Strange Land shows how one man with a dream can change the world. JOSHUA M. Tap into eons of knowledge and experiences, condensed into digestible portions. Highly, highly recommend. “Uniquely outstanding. No fluff and all substance. David does an outstanding job summarizing these biographies and hones in on the elements that make his subjects so unique among entrepreneurs. I particularly enjoy that he focuses on both the founder's positive and negative characteristics as a way of highlighting things to mimic and avoid.”“I just paid for my first premium podcast subscription for Founders podcast. Learning from those who came before us is one of the highest value ways to invest time. David does his homework and exponentially improves my efficiency by focusing on the most valuable lessons.”“I haven't found a better return on my time and money than your podcast for inspiration and time-tested wisdom to help me on my journey.“I've now listened to every episode. From this knowledge I've doubled my business to $500k a year. Love your passion and recommend your podcast to everyone.”“Founders is the only podcast I pay for and it's worth 100x the cost.”“I have listened to many podcasts on entrepreneurship (HIBT, Masters of Scale, etc.) and find Founders to be consistently more helpful than any other entrepreneurship podcast. David is a craftsperson, he carefully reads biographies of founders, distills the most important anecdotes and themes from their life, and draws commonalities across lives. David's focus is rightfully not on teaching you a formula to succeed but on constantly pushing you to think different.”“I highly highly recommend this podcast. Holy cow. I've been binge listening to these and you start to see patterns across all these incredible humans.”Listening to your podcast has changed my life and that is not a statement I make often.“After one episode I quickly joined the Misfit feed. Love the insight and thoughts shared along the way. David loves what he does and it shines through on the podcast. Definitely my go-to podcast now.”“It is worth every penny. I cannot put into words how fantastic this podcast is. Just stop reading this and get the full access.”“Personally it's one of my top 3 favorite podcasts. If you're into business and startups and technology, this is for you. David covers good books and I've come to really appreciate his perspective. Can't say enough good things.”“I quickly subscribed and it's honestly been the best money I've spent all year. It has inspired me to read biographies. Highly recommend.”“This is the most inspirational and best business podcast out there. David has inspired me to focus on biographies rather than general business books. I'm addicted.”“Anyone interested in business must find the time to listen to each any every Founders podcast. A high return on investment will be a virtual certainty. A Thousand Little Deaths is a story molded from experience and thrown into verse. For many, poetry is a method of healing, a method of activism, a method of releasing all the pain you've held inside of you in a single burst. Laura LeMoon offers us this brief chapbook of her life in an attempt to share a journey not many are familiar with, taking on existential issues such as death and how absurd life can be when it throws the impossible at you. It's a test of endurance, throwing readers into a world most have probably only seen through television or stereotyped novels. It's a hard read. It's an essential read. And the moment you open up it's pages, LeMoon's words will go right for your gut, sending you spiraling as you move along with her journey.   SPONSORED EPISODE:   This episode is brought to you by Rare Bird Lit and Unstoppable by Joshua M. Abandoned at ten years old by a mother who chose her drug-addicted, abusive boyfriend, Danielle Henderson was raised by grandparents who thought their child-rearing days had ended in the 1960s. She grew up Black, weird, and overwhelmingly uncool in a mostly white neighborhood in upstate New York, which created its own identity crises. Under the eye-rolling, foul-mouthed, loving tutelage of her uncompromising grandmother—and the horror movies she obsessively watched—Danielle grew into a tall, awkward, Sassy-loving teenager who wore black eyeliner as lipstick and was struggling with the aftermath of her mother's choices. But she also learned that she had the strength and smarts to save herself, her grandmother gifting her a faith in her own capabilities that the world would not have most Black girls possess. With humor, wit, and deep insight, Danielle shares how she grew up and grew wise—and the lessons she's carried from those days to these. In the process, she upends our conventional understanding of family and redefines its boundaries to include the millions of people who share her story.   Here, Danielle discusses her book The Ugly Cry with Ann Friedman.   SPONSORED EPISODE:   This episode is brought to you by Rare Bird Lit and Unstoppable by Joshua M. They're not the most popular freshmen at their Florida prep school, but at least everyone knows their name(s). The Brittanys.   Brittany Rosenberg: drives her golf cart around her subdivision to meet boys. Brittany Gottlieb: insists you can't lose your virginity if you haven't gotten your period. (She heard it somewhere ) Brittany Tomassi: is from New York. Brittany Jensen: once threw her tampon into a stranger's swimming pool. A brash, bold, unapologetic tomboy. And the greatest person in the whole wide world.   At least as far as the fifth Brittany--our narrator--is concerned. Even within their friend group, she and Jensen are a duo: with their matching JanSport backpacks, Tiffany chokers, and Victoria's Secret push-up bras, they are unstoppable. And now that they're finally growing up, they're going to do everything: dye their hair, attend no-parent parties, try pot . . . maybe even lose their virginities. 2004 is totally going to be their year   Except Jensen's interests may be diverging from her friends'. And within our narrator's own family--in the lives of her exhausted mother and beloved, genius older brother--life-changing events may be taking shape. Events that only years later, looking back, she has the perspective to see.   Enjoy this conversation with The Brittanys author Brittany Ackerman.   SPONSORED EPISODE:   This episode is brought to you by Rare Bird Lit and Unstoppable by Joshua M. Well, I interviewed him about his new book entitled Unstoppable. It’s the story of Siggi Wilzig and his astonishing journey from Auschwitz survivor and penniless immigrant to Wall Street legend. Before we get to the book, though, I had to uncork Joshua’s story a bit and learn how he went from being a hippie who got to jam with George Harrison to becoming a Holocaust scholar. Along the way I learned that he and the subject of his latest book share a few things in common, but you will have to listen in to find out what they are I found it fascinating that after being approached to write this book by one of Siggi’s sons, Joshua’s first instinct was to turn him down saying he’s written too much about darkness and it was time to focus on something that brought more light. That was, of course, before he knew Siggi’s story which is at its core a celebration of human ingenuity, a testament to the power of faith, and a tale of triumph in the face of adversity. I know you will enjoy this interview and urge you to pick up Unstoppable, which can be purchased wherever books are sold, though Joshua would urge you to consider buying it at your local bookstore. If you must buy it online, please consider buying it here, at Bookshop.org where a portion of every sale goes to support local bookstores. SUMMARY Not just another rags-to-riches story, “Unstoppable” by Joshua M. Greene is the unbelievable true story of “Siggi B. Wilzig’s Astonishing Journey from Auschwitz Survivor and Penniless Immigrant to Wall Street Legend.” Initially reluctant to write another dark Holocaust-survivor story, Greene, was surprised to find the post-Auschwitz life of Siggi B. Wilzig full of great hope. A force of nature, this Holocaust survivor not only became a business behemoth in both the oil and banking industries but also a powerful example of how to live every day fully, joyfully, and generously. “This is a book that will make you feel good about being an American,” says Greene. “He saw this as a place that gave immigrants a chance, a place where character was vaulted as a noble quality over cunning and cutthroat business practice.” According to Greene, what Siggi would want us to know today is to never give in to despair; never give in to the darkness. In our time, when heroes are in short supply, Siggi provides hope and heroism. SIGGI’S SALIENT QUALITIES Strong self-confidence that rebuffed any type of intimidation Early awareness of how adults thought and behaved Belief in the Almighty Authentic interest in caring for humanity Love of life (joie de vivre) Wicked sense of humor Drive for learning Foxlike intuition Fierce loyalty Extreme generosity Unstoppable! Kathryn interviews Pediatrician Harley Rotbart MD, author of “No Regrets Living: 7 Keys to a Life of Wonder and Contentment.” Many people reach the end of their lives wishing they could change the past. Turning back the clock is impossible, but Dr. Rotbart offers sage guidance to help us appreciate what we have in our lives, and take greater pride in what we've done with our lives — without spending precious time and energy wishing things had turned out differently. Woven into his timeless message are especially timely observations on the COVID-19 pandemic, from his expert perspective as an infectious diseases physician, including coping mechanisms and paths for going forward as individuals and as a society. He is Professor and Vice-Chair Emeritus of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and the author of more than 175 medical and scientific publications, including five previous books for general audiences. Kathryn also interviews Filmmaker Joshua M. Greene, author of “Unstoppable: Siggi B. Wilzig's Astonishing Journey from Auschwitz Survivor and Penniless Immigrant to Wall Street Legend.” Greene delivers a captivating story, as well as an historic document that will resonate with readers long after they finish his book. This one-of-a-kind rags-to-riches adventure follows a young boy from starvation on death marches to dinner at the White House, and recounts the volcanic, miraculous life of Siggi Wilzig, who survived the Holocaust to become one of the biggest — and most unexpected — successes in postwar American business. A featured speaker at the Pentagon and the Judge Advocate General's College, Greene frequently lectures at state bar associations on issues of war crimes law. He has spoken on issues of Holocaust memory for NPR and Fox News, and his editorials have appeared in the NY Times, the LA Times and the Chicago Tribune.
