Gold's career started at a stand at the Boulder Farmers' Market, where he sold his homemade nut butter to hungry shoppers. It was a side gig to his day job waiting tables and working in a local REI. (The name Justin's is actually a nod to those early days when he'd label his jars with his name to ward off his hungry roommates.) In the 15 years since, the vegetarian and avid cyclist has turned the stand into a multi-million dollar company by staying true to his values and expanding his product line in a smart, sustainable way. In this podcast episode, Gold speaks candidly about his experience growing the business and the obstacles he encountered along the way. His explanation of the traits that define his entrepreneurial spirit—curiosity, frustration, and passion—is especially inspiring. These three qualities converged a few years into Justin's evolution when Gold borrowed $75,000 from his roommate's parents to start packaging his nut butters in portable squeeze packs people could take on the go. What he thought would be an overnight hit ended up being a bit of a flop—but instead of resigning to failure, Gold leaned on his curiosity and passion and started to investigate what was going on. "I literally would stand at the store, watch people shop the set," he says. Once he did, he realized that the way he was packaging the product and placing it in the store was off, so he made a few tweaks that changed the company's trajectory. "With that move alone, our jar sells really started to increase and took off, and it created this really great system where the business was able to create a sustainable and profitable foundation." Typically the changes include formulation and flavor modifications. Rarely do they include redefining the category with innovative packaging AND making a better product while improving the industry. This week's story's about a tenacious entrepreneur that would not give up no matter the problem, no matter how many bottlenecks were put in front of him. He followed his gut and he did the research to ensure that he had the right strategy to move forward. More importantly, he redefined the category in terms of the way we think about something that most of us think of as a commodity. As a result, carved out a unique niche that set him apart from the competition, something that really was a game changer in the way that consumers think about nut butters. All of a sudden, they were a convenient snack, a quick energy boost for athletes and people on-the-go. The convenient and easy way to try new products and a convenient portable source of protein. In the process, Justin has become instrumental in changing the way that big brands focus on what's important to the consumers, by what he calls the triple bottom line approach, that focus on people, products, and planet. This is changing the mindset, and the way that big brands look at small brands by focusing on the consumer and helping small brands gain a bigger voice and help them get under more retailer shelves and into the hands of more shoppers. Key Takeaways [5:24] In a Twitter exchange with musician John Mayer, Justin accepted the challenge to produce the world’s first Chocolate Almond Butter with Cookie Dough. John put a photo of it on Instagram, and wrote, “Thanks Justin. You've ruined me for all other of life's awaiting pleasures.” [9:27] Justin believes in walking the talk. If we’re going to support sustainable food ingredients, and reducing the packaging on our products, then we should be really mindful of the origin and disposal of everything we use, not only in the company, but in our lives. Their products are actually making a difference to people, with healthier food, and less packaging. [11:02] Justin challenges his team consistently to question the way it’s always been done in the past. People in companies fall into a rhythm, and keep sustaining this rhythm, because it’s easy. We lose track of how we got into this rhythm in the first place. Whether in packaging, product, or consumer engagement, keep looking for better ways to work. Always question everything. [12:59] Justin didn’t hit his home run until he moved out of the form factor of jars. After years of really not succeeding with jars, they had the idea of the squeeze pack, and it was a category disruptor for nut butters. Then they tried the peanut butter cup, which led to the snack pack. If he hadn’t started with jars, he would not have gotten to the squeeze pack and beyond. [14:50] Tips to get momentum: get validation from someone you admire; have the attitude that anything’s possible. When you’re positive and you’re excited, that energy is infectious, and it will draw the right people to help you. Positivity attracts positive people. [18:37] Justin did not foresee being a thought leader. He sought out early as much help as he could from other entrepreneurs, and they were all open to help him. He made note of that, and realized his obligation and purpose to pay it forward. Knowledge gained can really help a young company. Justin gets inspired by opportunities to share knowledge that did not come easily. [21:48] Justin got help from the U of C Leeds School to write a business plan. Looking back at his first plan, Justin laughs, because he had no idea what he was talking about, but it was important to get it on paper and declare to the world, this is what I want to do. After a professor’s critique, he rewrote it, and it was spot on. He was able to execute it successfully. [26:01] Justin’s first hire was a roommate, but his biggest step to success was hiring Lance Gentry, who became a business mentor and hero. Lance raised investments, saw them through the 2008 downturn with expertise, and landed them Whole Foods and Starbucks national orders. Lance passed away suddenly, and Justin necessarily carried on to become a leader. [32:54] Justin talks about Hormel. Finances, commodity supply, and manufacturing capacity, required partnering with a big company to provide top quality at the quantities needed, without creating conditions for a food recall. Hormel and Justin inspired each other with their visions of the future of food, so they came to a deal. Justin’s goal is to impact change at a larger scale. [43:23] Justin loves the Whole Planet Foundation’s Microloan a Month program. It gives beginning entrepreneurs the ability to start a company, which gives people jobs, a sense of importance, and the opportunity to earn money to buy their own food, while building a local economy. Some people thought entrepreneur Justin Gold was nuts for trying to disrupt the peanut butter market. A decade later, he’s been recognized by Inc. and Ernst & Young as one of the food and beverage sector’s rising stars. Originally from Pennsylvania, Gold is one of the Boulder, Colorado startup community’s big success stories, having moved to the mountain town after becoming disillusioned with his original career plan to become a lawyer. The keen outdoorsman made the most of the biking and skiing lifestyle while waiting tables to support himself, and found himself frequently chowing down on peanut and almond butter for the protein benefits. Gold decided to start making his own at home, experimenting by adding everything from maple syrup to berries in his concoctions. They proved a big hit with his roommates, who ate everything he whipped up, so Gold started labeling the jars “Justin’s,” at first just to keep them away. “At that point it changed from a kitchen experiment to a project,” he says. Being completely new to business, he had a million questions about how to start a company, from company structure through to labeling, packaging, and food regulations. Leaning on the Colorado University business library as a resource, Gold came up with a business plan. And since Boulder is home to a number of other companies in the natural foods space, from Celestial Seasonings to Rudi’s Organic Bakery, he started reaching out to their founders for advice. Having raised about $30,000 from friends and family, Justin’s launched in 2004, selling to local stores, but a few years in, wasn’t growing as Gold had hoped. He knew overnight success was unlikely — his own mentor Steve Demos, the creator of milk alternative Silk, struggled for nearly 30 years selling tofu first. Being a “little naive and a little stubborn” kept him going, he says, with the idea that they would figure it out eventually. Justin's is a pioneering and rapidly expanding leader in the organic, all-natural nut butter and confections categories. The new candy bars are available in three gourmet flavors -- Milk Chocolate Peanut, Dark Chocolate Peanut and Milk Chocolate Almond. Gold explains to co-hosts David Biondo and Dean Rotbart how much effort and time went into developing the candy bar line, which is currently available exclusively through Whole Foods Stores.
