For many, hair loss due to chemotherapy is one of the most feared and traumatic side effects. Shockingly, according to HairToStay, 8% of women will decline potentially life-saving chemotherapy because of their fear of losing their hair. HairToStay is dedicated to changing that. As the first and only national (US) nonprofit organization dedicated to helping low-income cancer patients afford scalp cooling as well as subsidizing the treatment, HairToStay helps raise awareness, offer information and support patients considering the use of scalp cooling to prevent chemo-induced hair loss. And now, they're turning up the volume on awareness with a series of exciting events for their scalp cooling subsidy program. From salons and haircare brands to everyday supporters, they're counting on the entire community to rally behind this life-changing cause. Amy Carter is the owner of one of Indiana's top salons, but she isn't a beauty service provider. She is not licensed to do hair, nails or esthetics - but she has found success by approaching salon ownership from an accountant's point of view. Amy Carter is the Founder of Empowering You Consulting - helping salons and spas across the nation every day to expand their client base, increase profits, operate more efficiently, train a team of leaders, and gain personal satisfaction from their professional endeavors. Amy owns and operates Solaris Aveda Salon in Evansville Indiana, ranked in the top 200 fastest-growing salons by Salon Today. Solaris has been named as an Honoree in Salon Today 200 for the years 2018-2022. Amy knows what it takes to reinvent a business and train a leadership team that is invested in long-term success. This is the story of how Amy started her unlikely career - not as an accountant, but as an entrepreneur in the face of great difficulties. She has overcome obstacles like bad business partners, bankruptcy, a lack of systems and the merging of mindsets to create her business. These lessons are being featured on The Business of You to inspire us to rise above the impossible - and allow ourselves to grow. A rough start in business Amy's story is a welcome reminder that great success sometimes begins with failure. After college, Amy longed to start a small business. With her degree in accounting, she bought a salon - realizing after the ink was dry that the business was bankrupt. She was panicked. Her business partner cleaned out the bank accounts, left the employees unpaid and skipped town overnight, leaving 22-year-old Amy to clean up the mess. She made the difficult decision to build a new building and reopen the business after receiving 24-hour notice to vacate the mall. 18 years later, the business is still open. Amy could have let that mistake dictate the rest of her life. But rather than being hard on herself, she humbled herself instead - committing to a lifelong journey learning to be better at business. Now, Amy understands what she missed the first time. As an accountant, she looked back through the books and the issues were clear. Realizing that they had been paying too much rent and the profit was so low, Amy vowed to approach her salon business like an accountant from now on. Structure in an unstructured business When Amy asked one of her employees to clock in and clock out, it felt as though she was asking for her first born child. Met with resistance while implementing systems and processes, Amy realized that she needed to learn to speak her employees' language. To Amy, structure and systems were like breathing. They felt normal and natural. But to her creative and relaxed staff, her rules felt like a prison. Amy had to change their tune. After explaining that the systems were in place to protect their legal rights, Amy felt exasperated. Finally, she had an aha moment. She motivated her employees to follow processes in order to free up their time, take on more clients, get paid more and receive payment on time with no issues. Her communication worked - and many of her previous employees still work with her to this day. Your business grows with you When asked about her personal and professional growth, Amy laughs. She admits that she wasn't the leader she is today, early in her business. Since Amy started her business at just 22 years old, she didn't have the life experience to approach her employees with empathy and understanding. But now, she sings a different tune. She is nationally recognized as a leader of salon and spa owners, teaching them to think less like frazzled service providers and more like smart savvy entrepreneurs. Your personal growth will be reflected in your business. Enjoy this funny, frank and inspiring conversation on The Business of You! Quotes “I was like - if I'm going to do this type of business again, I've got to do it differently. And that's when I hired a consulting company.” “I had a personal mission that I wanted to have a debt-free company. Because to me, in a small business, when we have debt, it really does tie us in as owners. There's not a lot of freedom. So for me, freedom and flexibility look like being completely debt-free.” “It became about running it like a business, not as a job. A lot of times in the beauty industry, really, any service-based business, typically the owners are heavy technicians. Being a non-technician, I wasn't constantly doing services. But you know what the tricky part of it was? How do you take beauty and business plus employees, and merge them together? It was really challenging, putting this structure in place so that they can thrive - because they were so resistant to it.” “I realized that there were owners just like me that thought that their dream was the most amazing vision dream ever…turned straight up nightmare. Like, the math just doesn't work in this industry.” “I finally figured out some secret ingredients to get my employees to really be on board with it. Ultimately, those systems are for them. When I was able to figure out some of the secret sauces, so to speak, about this industry, I was like, I know those people are just like me. If I can support them in creating a life that they love and a business that they love and maybe a paycheck that they deserve, then we're onto something!” “It takes so much resilience to be able to not only have a brick and mortar, but then to learn how to have a remote company, have a remote team.” “I'm only really good at this because I really sucked at it. I'll be honest. I didn't get here because it was easy. I didn't take the easy path. I actually was an asshole. I couldn't understand why people just wouldn't just do their job. My businesses grew up with me. I took on a lot of personal development in my twenties, and then in my thirties, I really took on leadership development because that had to happen.” Links mentioned in this episode: Visit Amy's website at http://www.empoweringyouconsulting.com Follow Amy on facebook at https://www.facebook.com/amy.laura.carter Connect directly with Amy on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/amycartereyc/

Celebrity Stylist, successful salon owner, His award winning salon reached the height of popularity after being featured on Bravo TV, where they gathered millions of fans. Since this exposure, Martino and his salon have been featured in Modern Salon Magazine, Vogue, Launchpad, Behind the Chair, Salon Today, and The Golden Globes. Before creating his own brand, Martino By Martino Cartier, he was the International Artistic Director for Keratin Complex for 6 years and the Global Artistic Director for Hotheads for 2 years. Martino has been featured along with Tabatha Coffey, Kim Vo, Ken Paves, John Frieda and many more at the Stylist Choice Awards in Chicago. Martino's mother recalls him as a young child stating," He was born with a pair of golden shears in his hand. When he was only five years of age, a group of neighborhood children were all watching cartoons together, but instead he was watching one of the girls braid her sister's hair." Since that Saturday morning in Key Largo, Florida, it has been his passion to make the world beautiful one head at a time. Martino was adopted by a loving family at the age of 6 months. At the earliest age possible, his mother explained to him the few details of his adoption. Martino learned that both of his biological parents were from Cairo, Egypt. In 2006, Martino had a dream that led him to find his birth family and it's Egyptian roots. A-YAD, Martino's middle name meaning celebration. Martino believes that a combination of charity and education makes this all happen. It originally started just trying to help out a family with a terminally ill child looking to raise $5,000. In just one day, they surpassed their goal raising over $20,000 for that family in need. When asked what do you attribute this success to, Martino replied, "When I started out, I decided it was my job to not only make people beautiful above the scalp, but below as well. As I traveled this amazing journey, I started out with only a three-station salon. Dozens of cut-a-thons later, and hundreds of thousands of dollars donated to local families in need, I now have a salon with over 50 stations. It is with confidence we can say that we are the best! God has blessed us and I am thankful!" Cartier founded the charity Wigs and Wishes, granting wishes to those with cancer and life threatening diseases. About Sophia: The best investment I made into my career was becoming ABCH certified (American Board Certified Hair Colorist). It has allowed me to truly understand hair from the inside out. The second best investment I made was attending the first national hair loss conference. I learned so much about the causes of hair loss and the variety of solutions to those causes. Creativity and the hair industry run in my family. I stumbled into hair during high school and graduated with a cosmetology career. I tried college twice throughout the years, but hair was always there. Once I found Xanadu that was it. I knew. Connecting with my clients is the best feeling and the smiles are the greatest reward. In my spare time I take care of my two boys (dog mom) and my variety of plants. @sodoesmyhair Candy Shaw French Haircutting American Board Certified Hair Colorists (now called Board of Certified Hair Colorists) Trichology Conference _________ A bit more about Danise: Growing up in a small Southeastern Kansas town, I always knew I would become a hairstylist. Listen as they share with you essential tips before hiring your staff because knowing these key components will help keep your beauty business thriving and growing. "We really have a philosophy when we have staff that my number one job as manager was to take care of the team, not the clients, not anything else, take care of the team. I take care of the team, the team will take care of the clients, and the clients are taken care of. They take care of the business; it's a circle of life in business." - Paul Luebbers Topics Covered: 03:51 - How Paul and Tussanee's beauty lash business organically grew 08:35 - Do they compartmentalize their life into personal and business? 10:49 - What to consider when hiring team members 12:53 - What you need to know when hiring and managing your staff members 16:13 - Figure out who is the problem in your company 17:35 - Leadership skills required when you lead a beauty business team 19:45 - Why those difficult conversations are so important 23:53 - How to approach uncomfortable conversations 25:33 - Assuming the best of your employees 28:12 - Training your staff on how to deal with difficult situations 31:13 - Systems that address the issue of competition 38:57 - The anti-commision way to motivate your team to sell your products and services. 49:05 - How to see things from the lens of humility 53:31 - What's at the top of their list that helps them in getting their behavior checked 55:53 - Important tips before hiring your staff 01:01:12 - You're still the leader even if you hire a manager 01:02:17 - What's coming up for beauty professionals Key Takeaways: "I have to say that one of the things that work about our relationships is because we are so united in our mission. I mean, here we have different jobs, but it's for the same cause, and it's really cool to be on the same team." - Tussanee Luebbers "I think the biggest thing is that most people think, Oh, I'm gonna hire people so I can make money in my sleep, passive income somehow. And the truth is when you at least first hire, and you're just starting out, you have to be ready to work more and make less, especially in the beauty world." - Paul Luebbers "You got to, sometimes just take the joy, the little things to celebrate because life's gonna beat the crap out of you at times. That's how you focus on, you're gonna be really discouraged, but take the small victories and pump them up." - Paul Luebbers "When you become a leader, you need to learn or know how to pull your team accountable. You need to be the one that holds the team and pushes them. Because when people aren't pushed we just kind of pull back, and we do the bare minimum." - Paul Luebbers "When we first hired, I was really learning to realize that we have to be servants first. That was the quality that we had to change." - Paul Luebbers "We say this: People, they don't leave companies, they leave you." - Paul Luebbers "You may think that you have a team, but if you compensate through commission, you don't have a team; you have individual players building their own businesses." - Tussanee Luebbers "You can't communicate when you're in anger because you're not thinking about what's best for the other person. You're only thinking about how you've been wronged or it's hard to serve people in the way that they deserve." - Tussanee Luebbers Resource: Are You Ready To Be Seen, Enhance Your Credibility, And Attract New Clients with Media Publicity? InternCLE Episode 054 Lavish Color Salon Tracey Watts CirinoWWW.LAVISHCOLORSALON.COM About Lavish Color Salon:Lavish Color Salon is a full-service salon here in Northeast Ohio. Tracey noted that she always wanted the experience at her salon to be top notch in addition to extraordinary cut and color skills. The salon was recently honored by Salon Today. Culture is key in their hiring process and Tracey provides her team members with training and development. About the internship experience:Interns at Lavish can come from high school cosmetology programs or through an associate program for those that have just received their license. Training for interns at Lavish includes books (Tracey wrote her own on the topic of professional skills – Beyond Common see her website to learn more - https://traceywattscirino.com/), manuals, video training, in person training and mentoring. Successful interns at Lavish must be willing – to learn, to serve and to work hard. To source interns for the business side of her salon, she has partnered with local colleges to source marketing and administrative roles. Tracey is looking for ways to standardize her hiring and internship program. Tracey is well connected in her industry and looks to give back to other business owners. "Sometimes, when you think about yourself as a number two, you're really a number one." Often when it comes to change, there has to be someone willing to ask the question "Why are we doing things this way?" That was the case when Dr. Tye and Courtney Caldwell looked at the salon business, and rather than stop at asking that question, they did something about it. They are the cofounders of ShearShare, the first on-demand salon and barbershop space rental app. ShearShare is the first Texas startup to win Google Demo Day, L’Oreal’s Women in Digital NEXT Generation Award, and Tech. Co’s Startup of the Year. The Caldwells’ work has been featured in the New York Times, the Washington Post, Fast Company, Forbes, Black Enterprise, Modern Salon, and Salon Today. They are alums of YC Fellowship and 500 Startups, two world-renowned programs for creating top-end entrepreneurs. But all the accolades couldn't have come without one big leap away from a comfortable lifestyle and putting it all on the line for an idea. You can learn more at shearshare.com Second Shot Sit-Downs is an in-depth look at the people who inspire us, from your friends at Second Shot! This interview series is meant to highlight the types of people we talk about on the show: the people who really embody that idea of taking a Second Shot at business, at relationships, at life.

Guests are interviewed on their experiences in both Fashion and Beauty and offer the Beauty Fashion and War audience guidance, wisdom and candor. EP 33: Victoria Hunter (the Thunder from Down Under) and Larry Raspanti, deliver a profound talk on what it takes to run a successful Hair Salon in the Jungle known as New York City. Equipped with over 40 years of combined expertise, these 2 Entrepreneurs share their Social Media Strategies and how Bob Marley was a True Rasta-Man! What does it take to make a positive impact in the world of Beauty and Fashion? Join us as Victoria Hunter and Larry Raspanti shares their Entrepreneurial mindset and an inside glance at their journey to becoming successful Entrepreneurs in the world of Beauty, Fashion and War! [shadowbox] It’s my pleasure to introduce 2 seasoned professionals in the world of Hair Styling, Color, Hair Painting and Entrepreneurship. Their New York City based Salon, ‘The Whittemore-House’ has been featured in almost every major metropolitan magazine to include Time, NY Daily News, Elle, Salon Today, Allure and GQ to name a few. [/shadowbox] Victoria Hunter - Bio Victoria Hunter approaches hair color with the discerning eye of a fine artist. As a pioneer of the “hair painting” genre, Hunter studies every head of hair like a 3 Dimensional canvas – intuitively deciding where to place the perfect pop of auburn or unexpected streak of dusty lavender. While in Hunter’s chair, no creative vision is off limits; over the course of her career, she has made a name for herself as the gold standard of hair color for countless models, cool girls, editors, stylists and celebrities and has become the go-to colorist for famed stylist Guido Palau. A native of Queensland, Australia, Hunter honed her skills in Melbourne, London and Hong Kong before arriving in New York to serve as the color director of Bumble and bumble. In 2007, she achieved widespread recognition for her innovative hair painting method as the first ever recipient of the Hair and Beauty Award at the Colour Secrets Gala in Frankfurt. Two years later, Hunter left Bumble and bumble to open Whittemore House Salon with partner Larry Raspanti. Located in the bucolic setting of a tree-lined street in the West Village, Whittemore House Salon serves as a hub for in-the-know New Yorkers (and beyond). On an average day at Whittemore, one might witness Hunter creating an army of muted pastel wigs for the recent Marc Jacobs Fall 2014 fashion show while simultaneously transforming the model of the moment. Over the course of her career, Hunter has collaborated with some of the most iconic photographers of our time, including Steven Klein, Steven Meisel, Ellen von Unwerth, Mert and Marcus, Inez and Vinoodh, David LaChapelle, and David Sims. Her work has been featured in countless editorials, including American Vogue, Italian Vogue, Numero, ELLE, W, i-D and Interview magazines, to name a few. As one of the most in-demand visionaries in the fashion industry, she has created looks for a laundry list of iconic advertising campaigns, from Dolce & Gabbana to Lanvin to Alexander McQueen. Most recently, Hunter’s work can be seen in campaigns for Prada, Lanvin, Christian Dior, Louis Vuitton and Marc Jacobs. This past spring, she teamed up with Steven Meisel to create three cover stories for Italian Vogue. Hunter maintains an ardent passion for her signature hair painting method and continues to lead master classes on the technique around the world, including her main hub of Whittemore House Salon in New York. She believes there is no one “rule” to creating the perfect color, and instead works with stylists to develop an eye for color and tone, texture and style. As a result, the signature of Whittemore House—and of Hunter—is a bespoke look that is at once as effortless and seamless as it is unique. Larry Raspanti - Bio Larry Raspanti has always questioned traditional assumptions about hair and the application of color, which led him to the art of hair painting. Over the years, Larry has developed this modern way of coloring hair, bringing it from its infancy to the elevated craft it is today. He is an authority on men’s fashion and grooming, and is often backstage at fashion events and runways shows. As a result Larry has traveled the world extensively. He approaches hair with the perspective of an architect, deconstructing its three dimensionality, which he expresses both in cut and color. His inherent design capabilities have influenced his highly intuitive cutting techniques. A natural entrepreneur, he opened Whittemore House with Victoria Hunter in 2009.
