This week's prompt is an archival photo from the 1930s of a baby cage. It was considered important for babies to have fresh air, so this was a solution for people who lived in apartments. Each Imaginative Storm writer offered one line from the ten-minute pieces they wrote during our Saturday Morning Imaginative Storm Writing Group. It's always free; if you'd like to join, email nave@imaginativestorm.com for your invitation. The title “I Remember Traveling” comes from the first line spoken by Susie Shipman I remember traveling like gypsies every fall and spring before the horses came. Sometimes, my curiosity and need to explore takes me to terrible places. I burned the pages of a memoir I wrote once when I was hopeful. Little do my parents know the early education I am receiving out here. My cage is a house suspended over the sky. I may grouse, but I have an insecure attachment to this idea and, quite frankly, to your carpentry. It's a long way down. This baby's got bounce am I being stuck in the doghouse? It is a doghouse, right? Well, it's only training me how to be a resilient badass warrior. I've always wanted a window box to bury my hurts and watch them blossom into thornless roses. Five kids came after me; they just kept coming. She seemed to possess all the keys. I wept one tear; nobody had time for me. Safe in mid-air, we floated there between love and the hard place we called home. Apartment—Playground, I told you. I didn't want kids. Could it be fun? Imprisoned. But what of that infant perched like a bird? Will she become afraid of heights or become a pilot at home in the heavens? I dropped the box on the floor, and it screamed. Hang on, kids! That room with a view may be no more than a doghouse, cold comfort in a cage. When I went to the grocery store, I would put you in a harness and clip a leash between us. You might say we are gods multiplying, life-creating, life-consuming, flesh-eating gods. "I'll never do that again" is a hubristic, if naively optimistic, brag. It swirled in the clouds and glided to the playground, where squeals and screeches looped like an amusement park ride. It's hard to imagine what kind of sick person would do that. Yearning spreads far and wide, warm honey on toast. I had no power except to crawl in the cage, suspended over sky. Longing for the phoenix to become an alchemist and *Kintsugi life back together again. To the insecure attachment store and pick the crazy parent that's right for you. Don't rattle me now; you don't want to know what comes out or where it might land. This is no baby bunting fluttering in an AC's exhaust. This is only cold comfort in this cage within a cage. Remember that first arrival into new territory? She needs fresh air, and here, on higher ground, she's not exposed to viruses or colds from other kids. *“Kintsugi (金継ぎ, "golden joinery"), also known as kintsukuroi (金繕い, "golden repair"), is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with urushi lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum; the method is similar to the maki-e technique.” —Wikipedia ORDER OF SPEAKERS Susie Shipman, James Navé, Jane Goldberg, Dragon Rose, Krista Thronburg, Maru Ortega, Arlene Shapiro, Andrea de Lange, Andi Young, Elaine Heveron, Lou Faber, Linda Smith, Terry Varner, Katerina Tana, AR Burns, Diana Leszczyński, Regina Ress, Maria Wasson, Allegra Huston, Carin Channing, Sandi Dittmer, Lyn Rothman, Melissa Malm, Kathleen Wilson, Zebith Thalden, Bee Fortin, Geneva Hendry, Stewart Mintzer, Shirley Loe

In this episode, we interview Professor Kathleen Wilson-Chevalier, the host of the upcoming Kings & Queens 13 conference in May 2024 at The American University of Paris. In this interview, Kathleen tells us all about the inspiration behind the theme "Gift-giving and Communication Networks". We also discuss the conference's commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the death of Queen Claude de France (1499-1524) and why this important but all too often sidelined queen deserves far greater attention. Find out more about the plans for Kings & Queens 13 on the conference webpage--the call for papers is currently open with a deadline of 31 October 2023. Nota bene from our guest:Louise de Savoie was mother of the king, never queen nor queen mother.Louis XII and Anne of Brittany supported Guillaume Briçonnet and Jacques Lefèvre d'Etaples in their reform of Saint-Germain-des-Prés in 1513.Claude's daughter Madeleine de France became queen of Scotland when she was sixteen and died there the year of her marriage (1537). Jacques Lefèvre d'Etaples wrote a Vocabulaire du Psaultier to teach Latin to Madeleine and her brother Charles, which he published in 1529.Claude's last child, Marguerite de France, became duchess of Savoy in 1559. Here's what Kathleen says about her work. “"Art of the Spirit" records my life journey, a dance with God and Art.  Creating art, whether painting, drawing, drafting, sculpting, print making or designing graphics, is my way of touching that spiritual place within my soul where tangible beauty exists.  I am prompted by the Great Creative Spirit within me, who provides the spark.  Each step is  in search of that which already exists.  It waits to be revealed.  It is hidden within.  Julia Cameron makes a guest appearance on this show, along with two pieces of music by Walter Parks. A post-abortive couple describes the healing, forgiveness and peace they found through Rachel's Vineyard retreat (0:01) Beth Bauer, who coordinates Rachel's Vineyard retreats for post-abortive men and women in southeast Michigan, talks about the importance of encountering people who've suffered hurt, trauma and pain by choosing abortion, helping heal their spiritual and psychological wounds. (3:39) Listeners are introduced to Anne Marie and David Sauve, a married couple of 37 years who have three daughters and attend Holy Spirit Parish in Shields, Mich. When the couple met in college, however, they were typical young people — attending parties and living carefree existences. After a few months of dating and sleeping together, Anne Marie became pregnant. (5:45) Separately, Anne Marie and David fretted about the situation, fearing what the news would mean for their lives, careers and even future together. Anne Marie, who grew up Catholic, was ashamed of what her parents would think. She was also fearful of losing David, who feared the same thing — though he admits he didn't communicate that. (10:35) Believing it was the only way to “dial back the clock,” the couple decided to pursue an abortion — though neither of them felt completely comfortable with the decision. Anne Marie describes the operation as the “darkest moment of my life.” Through tears, she describes the emotion, pain and trauma of her abortion, adding it did not have the effect the couple had hoped. (13:45) Kathleen Wilson, pro-life coordinator for the Archdiocese of Detroit, describes the efforts of the Church today to provide healing ministries for men and women like David and Anne Marie, particularly the U.S. bishops' “Walking with Moms in Need” initiative and programs such as Rachel's Vineyard. (16:33) After their abortion, David and Anne Marie sought to make changes in their lives, becoming more involved in their faith and even making vows of celibacy to each other until they were married in 1985. But after several decades and three daughters, the pain of the couple's abortion remained. (18:20) One day, while driving to work, David heard an interview with Bauer on the radio, during which she discussed Rachel's Vineyard retreats for post-abortive men and women. He pitched the idea to a hesitant Anne Marie, and the couple decided to go. (19:13) The couple describes their experience during the retreat, which they describe as a place of hospitality, comfort and mercy. Anne Marie describes some of the sensory experiences provided, which are intended to help the couple face their decision and heal with Jesus' help. (21:19) Anne Marie describes a particularly moving moment in which she and David are encouraged to imagine their child “standing in a field of flowers.” The couple is encouraged to name their child, write a letter to him or her, and imaging them standing with the Lord in heaven. The experience allows the Sauves to grieve. (26:28) In another segment, David and Anne Marie are encouraged to seek forgiveness from the Lord, their child and from each other. (27:28) The couple describes how the retreat completely changed their outlook on life, so much so that now, when couples come to Rachel's Vineyard seeking comfort and solace, they are the ones providing it as volunteers. The exopsychologists here at the Council want to study the ambassador, not help zhirm. Please—anything you can do." Kathleen Wilson is founder and owner of SwimCalm, an innovative program that teaches adults with fear of water how to swim. This life altering program combines the mental and physical, proving to the student that the water is a friendly medium and it is well within their capacity to learn to be comfortable in any depth of water and swim. The program enjoys an extremely high rate of success among its graduates due to its premise of healing fear rather than simply managing fear. When not teaching a SwimCalm class, Kathleen Wilson is an internationally known and highly experienced marathon swimmer with a world class resume of swims. She teaches and coaches aquatics at the Medical University of South Carolina's Student Wellness center. She is the creator and race director for the annual Swim Around Charleston, a 12 mile open water swim event held in early fall each year and several swims registered in the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame as firsts. Kathleen was enshrined into the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame in May, 2018. When not in the water, Kathleen is a conservatory-trained professional harpist, holding a Bachelor of Music and Master of Music and has been principal harpist with the Charleston Symphony since 1987. She also holds an adjunct teaching positions at both the College of Charleston and Charleston Southern University while maintaining a busy schedule of providing music for special events. She also served the city of Charleston as a three term councilmember for the city of Charleston, representing District 12 and acting as Mayor Pro Tempore in 2008. She is a recipient of the Order of the Palmetto, the highest honor a citizen of South Carolina may receive and is a 2010 Liberty Fellow.

As we wrap up water safety week. I wanted to share with you the importance of why you need to learn to swim. We hear and talk a lot about children learning to swim, however we don't hear as much about the adults. Maybe that because adults don't tell us that they don't know how to swim for their own reasons. Many adults who don't know how to swim, the cause may be their fear of the water. Kathleen talks about managing the fear or cure the fear. Get your questions answered. It's never to late to learn to swim. Listen as Kathleen talks about The Who, What, Where and Why to help adults get over their fear and learn to swim to enjoy the water. About Swim Calm Charleston Have you dreamed of becoming comfortable enough in the water to exercise or swim for fun?  How about a water aerobics class or playing games in the pool with children or grandchildren? Would you like spend an afternoon on a boat without dreading the water? Can you rest as calmly in deep water as in shallow water? For adults with hesitation, to a moderate fear to a complete panicked fear of the water, there is now a system of teaching designed for you.  We do not insist that you “Relax, get in up to your waist, put your face in the water and blow bubbles” or “Learn one stroke and you will get over your fear.” Kathleen Wilson, primary SwimCalm instructor has considerable aquatic experience and certifications as she chooses to serve a segment of the population that has not been underserved; it has not been served at all. SwimCalm is dedicated to the high percentage of adults who experience some fear to a profound fear of the water and teaching them about its properties while learning how to feel safe in the water. References for this amazing teaching paradigms are available and for further information or questions, please contact Kathleen Wilson at 843-708-0846 or aquaharp@bellsouth.net  SwimCalm is a teaching system for adults with mild to severe fear of water. Traditional swimming lessons have not worked for these students and has prevented a lifetime of activities centered around the water. SwimCalm teaching removes that fear and allows students to learn how water works and how to move in it with ease Link to her website at SwimCalm Reach Kathleen also on LinkedIn
