Guests Dr. Ken Wallace recently retired as the longest-serving Superintendent in Maine Township High School District 207's history, which dates back to 1902. During Ken's tenure, District 207 was named one of America's most innovative districts multiple times for advances in technology, adult learning, and career advisement. Ken is currently an educational consultant for multiple organizations. Danelle Almaraz, an educational leader with over three decades of experience, is committed to advancing leadership in modern education. At InnovateED, she empowers middle-tier leaders, promoting collaboration, innovation, and growth. Danelle champions continuous improvement, student success, and curiosity, advocating for an inclusive educational experience that enables learners at all levels to drive positive change. Summary With author Jennifer Breheny Wallace's book Never Enough: When Achievement Culture Becomes Toxic—and What We Can Do About It as the backdrop, the podcast episode explores the toxic achievement culture in US education and its detrimental effects on today's youth. Dr. Ken Wallace and Danelle Almarez discuss how the pressure to excel academically and in extracurricular activities and gain admission to prestigious colleges is causing stress, anxiety, and mental health issues among students. They critique the narrow definition of success that prioritizes test scores and college admissions over personal growth and career readiness. The conversation covers the misalignment between traditional schooling and real-world needs, the rising student debt crisis, and the importance of career-focused education. Both guests advocate for redefining success, helping students find their passions, and giving them agency in their learning. They emphasize the value of experiential learning, internships, and understanding the economic implications of educational choices. The episode concludes by stressing the need for schools to foster a sense of belonging and “mattering,“ focusing on helping students understand who they are and on long-term student outcomes rather than short-term achievements. Welcome back to the Alt Goes Mainstream podcast. On today's show, we have a fascinating episode that combines the macro and the micro.Nimble Partners Founder John Burbank and Partner Ken Wallace come on the show to share their unique perspectives and discuss both the nuances and intricacies of investing in private markets and early-stage venture.Nimble Partners is a technology investment platform that invests into early-stage fund managers through their manager selection program and as well as direct and co-investments into breakout performers from their fund manager relationships.John and Ken have had illustrious careers in both public markets and private markets, investing in many of the biggest technology trends and many top early-stage managers over the past 15 years.John was a top macro investor from founding Passport Capital in 2000, where he was amongst the best hedge fund managers of his time. He's been investing into early-stage fund managers for the past decade. As a long-time macro investor, he has consistently focused on sectors and investments where technology can be disruptive and accelerate change. He's also an investor in the Golden State Warriors, the championship winning NBA team.Ken joined John to build Nimble after a stellar career at Industry Ventures, backing a number of emerging managers, most notably Chris Sacca's first-time Lowercase Capital fund, which at over 200x+ returns, was amongst the best performing venture funds in history. At Industry Ventures, he specialized in hybrid fund of funds strategy, originating, valuing, and managing primary fund commitments, early secondary LP investments, and direct co-investments.We had a fascinating conversation that spanned a number of topics:  Why this is not the end of venture capital — and why the winners are still to going to win and win big. How global macro impacts venture capital. The framework that John and Ken use to evaluate technology trends and emerging managers. How the “portfolio manager” model can be applied to venture capital. How information is a huge edge. Why duration is the most important thing an investor can have. Thanks John and Ken for coming on the Alt Goes Mainstream podcast to share your wisdom.

This episode is extra fun because we have three guests at once, all to talk about the same film - H.P. Lovecraft's Witch House. Considering the movie has had a phenomenal reception in Europe, having already won eighteen awards, we brought the crew on the show to figure out what their secret sauce ingredients were. Joining me is the director, Bobby Easley, who gives lots of information not only on the film itself but also about the building they shot in and the paranormal events that took on a set that was actually haunted. With us is Ken Wallace who helped to pen the script for the movie. He shares a lot of wise answers when it comes to plot beats and which Lovecraftian elements were involved with the flick. Michelle Morris plays the lead actress, though you may know her as Portia Chellelen. She talked with us about her experience playing Alice and even if her video and audio were spotty at times, she had a lot of great info to lay down. It was a killer time so I hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

Our Building a Better Cheyenne co-host, Ken Wallace, sits down with three of the founding board members of his AmeriCorps VISTA site -- Equal Justice Wyoming (EJW) -- for a bonus edition of the podcast. Ten years ago, to this day, the Wyoming Supreme Court approved rules and regulations for the Wyoming Center for Legal Aid (WCLA) -- the first state-sponsored civil legal aid program, which would later be rebranded as EJW. Patrick Day, Stuart Day, and Walter Eggers talk about their individual motivations to get involved in this now decade-long project, the path paved by the Access to Justice Commission, the placement and structure of EJW within the judicial branch, and resistance to the idea of state funding for civil legal services. We wrap up our time, together, by covering results of the recent 2019 statewide Civil Legal Needs Assessment, discussing the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic on legal aid, and getting-into what lies ahead for EJW and its 501(c)(3) arm -- the Equal Justice Wyoming Foundation -- in their 10th year. We're hoping to host similar conversations on this platform, in the near future, to continue celebrating EJW's 10th Year Anniversary and to raise awareness of the resources and services that we -- and our partners [Cheyenne Regional Medical Center Medical Legal Partnership, Legal Aid of Wyoming, the Wyoming Children's Law Center, the Wyoming Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, the Teton County Access to Justice Center, and the University of Wyoming College of Law] -- proudly offer. YOU DON'T NEED TO BE THE BEST;  JUST A BURNING DESIRE & A NEVER GIVE-UP ATTITUDE   Somewhere around 8 or 9 nine years ago, a young and not very ambitious Lachlan Tame walked through my clinic doors. Referred by legend surf boat sweeper and Avoca Beach Surf club life member Richard Brierty, Lachy as he's known, just wanted to be better. The vision at this point was small, yet Lachy was leaving his mark in local club races and showed promise for the future of his local club which had a strong history in results.   "I had a bit of a bet in 2010 that I would make the London Olympics. It wasn't as easy as I anticipated!" -Lachlan Tame   Spurred on by a bet against a mate, Lachy was true to his word and fast forwarding just a little he finds himself standing on the podium in Rio, 4 years after failing the original bet of London, and with the partner that he literally fell out of the kayak when competing against for the very first time a few years earlier. Ken Wallace became a mentor for Lachy, and paved the road forward for what was to become a life changing moment.     " I learned to do the little things right and to have fun with it all. Not being the best at anything meant I had to find the best ways to get little things done" -Lachy on the kind of athlete he has become.   The story here isn't necessarily of the Bronze medal collected in the 2016 Summer Olympics, yet more to do with the relentless grind and personal conviction that found an average athlete standing on the most important podium an athlete will ever stand on. From the comfort of his lounge room I bring you the Lachlan Tame story. From the beginning. Uncensored, and with the humility you'd expect from the guy next door. Shannon...
