In this eye-opening interview, social care entrepreneur Dr. Robert Kilgour delivers a brutally honest assessment of the UK's social care crisis. Alongside host Suhail Mirza, Dr. Kilgour examines alleged double standards in commissioning and the lack of business experience on the Government frontbench, while proposing his innovative "specialist regional model" for the care home sector. This industry legend reveals the dire challenges threatening social care - from unsustainable funding models to the looming wave of care home closures that could devastate communities across Britain.
We kick off this month's podcast with a deep dive into Mark's measurements, make what you will of that but be warned it caught me off guard. Topics of discussion this time round also include a deeper dive into the functionality of a carps gut governed by water temperatures. Do you think about the carp's cold water digestion process when you apply bait, maybe it's not front of mind but considering a carp's gut operates differently in cold water it's a topic that's worth exploring. We also have the second installment of Dan Kilgour's story. The first episode went down a storm, Dan's passion was infectious and the drive and determination he puts into his fishing, his particles and his profession was incredible. I really enjoyed recording these two episodes and I hope you get a real insight into the life of a working man, one juggling family life and carp fishing while growing his side hustle, the highly regarded Big Dogs Nuts. Enjoy.

We've been looking forward to this one dropping. This is the first part of a really honest chat with Mr Big Dogs himself, The Iceman, Dan Kilgour. We delve into the sort of big carp hunting that runs deep in Dan's DNA and discuss how demanding it has been over the years, but as you'll get to hear, he wouldn't change it for the world. We also delve into mine and Marks winter tactics that have recently helped us catch some lovely winter carp. We also touch on what carp are looking for in the winter, how they digest food and how our approach shoud be tailored to cold water carp, to keep the bites coming. Enjoy!
We chatted with our aunt and uncle about the family dynamics after divorce in our own family system. Jon Dreizen and Leslie Dreizen Kilgour are our father's younger siblings, who walk us through their own parents' divorce in the 1980s. In this heartfelt conversation, we explore the impact of divorce on sibling relationships, caregiving roles, and childhood memories in a large family. Jon and Leslie reflect on their unique experiences growing up in a divided household, sharing stories of contrasting parental environments, nostalgic moments, and the ways family members navigated post-divorce relationships. Through their perspectives, we gain insight into the lasting effects of generational trauma and the importance of sibling bonds during life's transitions. Our discussion delves into the complexities of growing up in a family system shaped by divorce and changing dynamics. Jon and Leslie share how custody arrangements and household differences impacted their lives, as well as the crucial role caregivers and siblings played in providing support. They reflect on the emotional challenges of their formative years, including the lack of fully articulated care and encouragement, and how these experiences influenced their own parenting styles. This candid exploration highlights the significance of being heard and supported as children, the healing of the inner child, and the enduring importance of family connections.Throughout the conversation, we celebrate the humor, love, and resilience within our family. Jon and Leslie's memories of shared experiences and the bonds of siblinghood illustrate the strength and laughter that have carried them through life's ups and downs. We touch on the importance of conscious parenting, honesty in communication, and fostering a nurturing environment for future generations. Today's guest is Maggie Kilgour, she is Molson Professor of English Language and Literature at McGill University—my Alma Mater. She sat down to talk with me and Andres Caro about John Milton and his epic poem Paradise Lost. Although this conversation is technically part of our "off-topic" series with Andres as co-host, the conversation is very much about the arts. Paradise Lost is a central accomplishment of Western culture, and as such it is a book everyone should read at least once. I hope if you have never picked it up, this inspires you to do so! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/artssalon/support

Rachael Kilgour unravels the layers of her late father on the album, "My Father Loved Me." Recorded in the cold of Toronto and produced by Rose Cousins (who also joins us for this conversation), this album carries the essence of Canadian roots and is a profound exploration of family heritage through the lens of an ordinary, hard working and humble man who died in 2017. The Duluth-born Rachael, and Rose, based in Halifax, reflect on their cold weather experiences, infusing the recording process with warmth despite the chilly Canadian setting. The core of our discussion revolves around Rachael's deep emotional connection to the album, particularly her poignant exploration of the father-daughter relationship amidst the challenges of dementia. We navigate the themes of grief, death, and identity, while learning about Rachael's father and how he has impacted and continues to live on through Rachael's personality and idiosyncrasies. They shared the struggle of anxiety and self-doubt, which the songwriter addresses on the album. We also get a look into Rose's perspective on Rachael's growth and the impact the vulnerable creative process has had on her songwriting. And then, we wrap it all up with a very fun Dad-themed lightning round.Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/ Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknews Help produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/ Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

Lethbridge's existing Land Use Bylaw has served our community since 1986. During this time, several amendments have been undertaken to this Bylaw to address market demands and resident aspirations. However, since its creation almost 40 years ago it has not undergone a comprehensive renewal. The Land Use Bylaw sets out the rules for what kind of building or activity can take place on private property and outlines the process for issuing Development Permits that give approval for new buildings and activities. In July 2023, the City of Lethbridge initiated a project to comprehensively renew its Land Use Bylaw to address current issues faced by the community. This is a three-year project with an anticipated completion in 2026. Phase 1 of this project focuses on addressing Land Use Bylaw regulations related to various social uses such as housing with social support and social services. This presentation will provide a full overview of this project and questions will be encouraged following the presentation. Project webpage: https://getinvolvedlethbridge.ca/lub Speaker: Ross Kilgour Ross Kilgour earned his first-class honours degree in Urban & Regional Planning from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland, where he was awarded the Royal Town Planning Institute Award for the Top Final Year Graduate. He then worked in London, England, first as a planner for the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea before moving to the private sector as a planning consultant with Firstplan Ltd. After immigrating to Canada in 2013, Ross joined the City of Lethbridge where he is now a Senior Community Planner, focusing primarily on the redevelopment of Lethbridge's older neighbourhoods and the City's heritage program. Ross' specific passions in urbanism include sustainability, equity, planning/zoning reform, and enabling active transportation and walkable neighbourhoods. His research has been published in Planning Practice and Research journal.

These two artists passed on within days of one another last December, and it seems like yesterday. They were dear friends of the Church of Stop Shopping. Hamish was best known for his band The Clean, and John for his Afro-Dixie Mixtapes. Ambitious artists could wish to leave for the world such luminous gifts. But “....our little life / Is rounded with a sleep." We can't know whether what we make will survive. All we can do is give to those who follow us our songs, and our stories, for justice, love, and peace. That's what John and Hamish did and continue to do every day. Love-a-alujah!

Are you a tasty treat for a shark during your period? Finally an answer to the question that plagues every woman surfer, at least once a month! Lifeguard Jessie Kilgour has a pretty strong take on the subject, but you'll have to get to the end to find out. You'll want to, though, as Jessie brings a fresh take on everything from where she surfs, to what she surfs, and how she lives her life around the water. Anchored in the Outer Banks, manager of megalodon Real Watersports school operation, Jessie speaks kitesurfing, windsurfing, foiling, water safety, and soul surfing. Her dedication and general good juju scored her a gig in “the dream she didn't know she had,” as one of few women to serve as a surf guide at fabled Tavarua. Oh, and being mistaken for Paige Alms. We talk story about kite surfing, getting tangled and getting free, the challenges of foiling, surfing the Outer Banks, and, of course, what it was like to keep people safe while surfing, hello, Cloudbreak! We deep dive into specific surfer chick stuff too. On the lighter side: how do you manage tampon shortages on remote island surf trips? On the heavier: the pressures of whether to have kids in the upper 30s, and how a woman's life and passions are impacted by whatever choices she makes. Jessie is a soft-spoken warrior. She says a lot in the spaces between, like underplaying a back injury she manages on a daily basis, which only amplifies how committed she is as an athlete, a teacher and a water woman. And then, she tells you the truth about sharks

A note from Talking Taiwan host Felicia Lin: Russia's invasion of Ukraine has put the reality of war on display for the world, especially for Taiwan, which like Ukraine, has been under the constant threat of military aggression of an unfriendly neighbor. Because of the war that's been happening in Ukraine there's been talk of how Taiwan must improve its military defense capabilities and preparedness, but beyond this, there are people in Taiwan wondering what they themselves can do to be prepared, should Taiwan come under attack. My guest on this episode of Talking Taiwan, T.H. Schee, a representative of Open Knowledge Taiwan, is one of those people asking these important questions. We'd like to dedicate this episode to the memories of David Kilgour, who passed away on April fifth at the age of 81 and Peng Ming-min who passed away on April eighth at the age of 98. Mr. Kilgour, who I interviewed recently, was a human rights activist, and a former Member of Canada's Parliament, having served in the House of Commons for nearly 27 years, as Secretary of State for Latin America & Africa from 1997-2002, and Secretary of State for Asia-Pacific from 2002-2003. Dr. Peng Ming-Min was a pro-Taiwan independence/pro-democracy activist. In 1964 he was arrested for sedition for drafting and printing a manifesto advocating for democracy in Taiwan, he served as president of the Formosan Association of Public Affairs from 1986 to 1988, and in 1996 he ran as a Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate in Taiwan's first direct presidential election. This episode of Talking Taiwan has been sponsored by the Taiwanese United Fund. Today, Lisa Kilgour and I talk about how you can create false beliefs around dieting, weight, and body image. Lisa is a registered holistic nutritionist, speaker, educator, and author who helps people heal from diverse and complex health issues. Listen in as we discuss how the food paradigm changes over time, why eating whole foods is essential, and how to change your perspective about food to have a healthier outlook.Lisa learned for herself how vital nutrition was while in college. She experienced severe nutritional and dietary deficiencies, which led her to have nerve pain, a foggy brain, and uncontrolled asthma, among other health concerns. Although she met with several doctors, none could help her, but they also never asked her about her diet. After college, she worked in a nutritional company that produced a green whole food product. After trying the product, she finally had focus and clarity back in her life. She then returned to school to secure her nutritional degree and started her own practice.Listen in to learn why it's important to look at your entire lifestyle when it comes to health, why our beliefs about weight and food matter, and how to bring more supportive food beliefs back to your body.Show Highlights[01:55] How Lisa arrived at her career as a holistic nutritionist and educator.[03:33] Going back to school for her degree in nutrition.[06:49] Why living in stress is detrimental to your overall health.[10:25] Eating for your body and eating seasonally.[13:28] Bringing food control back to your body.[15:29] Our belief about weight and what we eat.[19:57] Where to start when thinking about how to set yourself up for food thought success.[21:27] Pulling trauma threads out of your current eating habits.[25:57] Knowing when and how to say you are finished eating.Subscribe Today!Apple PodcastSpotifyAndroidStitcherRSSLinks | ResourcesIG: @DrNicoleByersFacebook: Dr. Nicole ByersWebsite: Drnicolebyers.comEmail support@drnicolebyers.comWhat's Your Stress Personality QuizSign up for my Confidence Boot Camp!Visit Lisa Kilgour on the webCheck out her guide Five Ways to Eat What You WantCheck out Lisa's Book Undieting
