fWotD Episode 2937: Cher Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Tuesday, 20 May 2025, is Cher.Cher ( SHAIR; born Cheryl Sarkisian; May 20, 1946) is an American singer, actress and television star. Dubbed the "Goddess of Pop", she is known for her androgynous contralto voice, bold visual presentation and multifaceted career, while cultivating a screen persona that mirrors her public image by often portraying strong-willed and outspoken women. An influential figure in popular culture, her continual reinvention has fueled multiple comebacks over a career spanning more than six decades.Cher gained fame in 1965 as part of the folk rock duo Sonny & Cher, early exponents of 1960s counterculture, while also scoring solo top-ten singles such as "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)". In the 1970s, she topped the US Billboard Hot 100 with narrative pop songs "Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves", "Half-Breed" and "Dark Lady". After focusing on acting, she reemerged in a hair metal style with the albums Cher (1987), Heart of Stone (1989) and Love Hurts (1991), producing international number-one singles "If I Could Turn Back Time" and "The Shoop Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss)". At 52, she reached a commercial peak with the dance-pop album Believe (1998), which introduced the "Cher effect"—a stylized use of Auto-Tune to distort vocals. The title track became 1999's number-one song in the US and the UK's best-selling single by a female artist. In the 21st century, she released her highest-charting US Billboard 200 albums, Closer to the Truth (2013) and Dancing Queen (2018), both of which debuted at number three.Cher became a TV star in the 1970s with The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour and her solo show Cher, both on CBS, attracting over 30 million weekly viewers. She gained critical acclaim after debuting on Broadway and starring in the film adaptation of Come Back to the 5 & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean (1982). Transitioning to film, she earned two Academy Award nominations—for Silkwood (1983) and Moonstruck (1987), winning the Oscar for Best Actress for the latter—and received the Cannes Film Festival's Best Actress Award for Mask (1985). Other starring roles include The Witches of Eastwick (1987), Mermaids (1990), If These Walls Could Talk (1996, her directorial debut), Tea with Mussolini (1999), Burlesque (2010) and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (2018). Her life and career inspired the 2018 jukebox musical The Cher Show.Cher is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, with estimated global sales of over 100 million records. She is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and the only solo artist with number-one singles on the US Billboard charts in seven consecutive decades (1960s–2020s). Her accolades include an Academy Award, a Grammy Award, an Emmy Award, three Golden Globes, the Billboard Icon Award and the Kennedy Center Honors. Her 2002–2005 Living Proof: The Farewell Tour was the highest-grossing concert tour by a female artist at the time, earning $250 million—about $402 million in 2025. Beyond music and acting, Cher is known for her progressive politics and advocacy for causes including LGBTQ rights and HIV/AIDS awareness. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:18 UTC on Tuesday, 20 May 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Cher on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Kendra.

It was released as the album's lead single in June 1989, by Geffen Records. The song was written specifically for Cher by Diane Warren, who produced it in collaboration with Guy Roche. Cher was unmoved by a demo of the song sung by Warren, but Roche insisted she record it. The lyrics talk about the feelings of remorse due to bad deeds and the willingness to reverse time to make things right."If I Could Turn Back Time" is a pop rock and soft rock song that features instrumentation from guitars, piano and drums. The song received mostly positive reviews from music critics, who applauded its overall production and Cher's vocal performance, with some considering it to be a highlight of the album. Commercially, the song peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and became Cher's first number-one hit in Australia. It also reached the top 10 of the record charts in Belgium, Canada, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. The accompanying music video for "If I Could Turn Back Time", directed by Marty Callner, was shot on board of the battleship USS Missouri and portrays Cher performing for the ship's crew, wearing a leather thong that revealed her tattooed buttocks and straddling a cannon. Military personnel condemned the video, while some family groups protested against its broadcast, because they deemed it offensive for the Navy and controversial. Following these protests, MTV was forced to air the video after the 9pm watershed."If I Could Turn Back Time" has been performed on seven of Cher's concert tours, most recently on the Here We Go Again Tour in 2018–2020, and at the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards. Send us a textThis episode, we look at what Rolling Stone magazine considers to be the best songs of the 80's. We have been critical of Rolling Stone in the past for the quality of their lists, and this time is no different. However, there's some good stuff in this list, which we're happy to acknowledge. Of course, we point out their failings as well – it'd be no fun if we didn't, would it?! In Rock News, we look at a new album from Coldplay (as if anybody cares!), the trials of Sean “Puffy” Combs, and The Beatles. Our “Album You Must listen to Before you Die” is 1985's The Nation's Saving Grace, by The Fall. Mick loves it, Jeff doesn't think much of it. So, what's new? Another fun episode. Enjoy. The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (03/29/2023): 3:05pm- On Monday, a 28-year-old assailant killed six people, including three children at Covenant School in Nashville, Tennessee—a private Christian elementary school. The alleged shooter was a former student of the school and identified as a transgender man. While speaking with members of the press, Nashville Police Chief John Drake said that investigators have not yet confirmed a motive for the attack. In her latest article, Katherine Fung of Newsweek documents objections to the public release of the shooter's manifesto—citing “concerns from LGBTQ+ groups.” In the past, these types of manifestos have always been made available to reporters and the public. Is it ever a good idea to allow government officials to withhold pertinent information? You can read the aforementioned article here: https://www.newsweek.com/audrey-hale-manifesto-release-raises-major-concerns-among-lgbtq-groups-1790938 3:15pm- Many media outlets and far-left commentators, outlandishly, have suggested that Republican policies placing restrictions on drag shows for minors and gender-affirming surgeries for children led to the Covenant School shooting in Nashville, TN. 3:30pm- On Wednesday, Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin signed legislation—HB 2171—that will ban unequal restrictions on places of worship during state emergencies. 3:40pm- On MSNBC, host Nicolle Wallace and guests former FBI official Frank Figliuzzi, Princeton professor Eddie Glaude, and analyst John Heilemann espoused conspiratorial lunacy suggesting that 2nd Amendment proponents value their own priorities over the safety of school children. 3:50pm- While speaking with reporters outside of the White House, President Joe Biden was asked if he believed Christians were targeted by the Covenant School shooter in Nashville, TN. After learning that conservative Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) expressed a belief that Christians had been targeted, Biden then stated: “I probably don't then.” 4:05pm- The Wall Street Journal Editorial Board documented a “strange house call” the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) made to independent journalist Matt Taibbi's home—unannounced “the same day Mr. Taibbi testified before the Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government.” The WSJ Editorial Board writes, “[t]he taxman left a note instructing Mr. Taibbi to call the IRS four days later. Mr. Taibbi was told in a call with the agent that both his 2018 and 2021 tax returns had been rejected…the curious timing of this visit, on the heels of the FTC demand that Twitter turn over names of journalists, raises questions about potential intimidation.” Read the full editorial here: https://www.wsj.com/articles/irs-matt-taibbi-twitter-files-jim-jordan-daniel-werfel-lina-khan-84ee518?mod=hp_opin_pos_2#cxrecs_s 4:10pm- While appearing on Fox News with Sean Hannity, Congressman Jim Jordan (R-OH) said it was “scary stuff” to learn that the IRS showed up to the home of journalist Matt Taibbi. 4:35pm- In his most recent report for Tablet, journalist Jacob Siegel documents government-driven censorship on social media platforms. Siegel writes: “A new outfit called Hamilton 68 claimed to have discovered hundreds of Russian-affiliated accounts that had infiltrated Twitter to sow chaos and help Donald Trump win the election. Russia stood accused of hacking social media platforms, the new centers of power, and using them to covertly direct events inside the United States. None of it was true. After reviewing Hamilton 68's secret list, Twitter's safety officer, Yoel Roth, privately admitted that his company was allowing ‘real people' to be ‘unilaterally labeled Russian stooges without evidence or recourse.'” You can read his full investigative report here: https://www.tabletmag.com/sections/news/articles/guide-understanding-hoax-century-thirteen-ways-looking-disinformation 5:00pm- The Drive at 5: Dr. Wilfred Reilly—Professor of Political Science at Kentucky State University & Author of “Taboo: 10 Facts You Can't Talk About”—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss his latest National Review editorial, “Robin DiAngelo and Scott Adams: Double Standard on Race.” PLUS is basic math racist? According to a presentation by Ontario Mathematics Coordinators Association's (OMCA) President Jason To, “2+2 = 4” is a dog whistle for white supremacy. You can read Dr. Reilly's full article here: https://www.nationalreview.com/2023/03/the-scott-adams-scandal-in-reverse-proves-our-racial-double-standard/ 5:35pm- While appearing before the House Armed Services Committee, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin denied that military bases are funding programs like “drag queen story hour”—despite evidence presented by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) that suggested otherwise. 5:50pm- While appearing on Fox News with Sean Hannity, Senator Rand Paul stated: “I'm 100% confident that Fauci lied to us.” He went on to explain that because former Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Dr. Anthony Fauci is still technically working on behalf of the federal government, he may be eligible to receive legal protection from the government. 5:55pm- During a House hearing on Wednesday, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said she could not explain why IRS agents showed up to the home of independent journalist Matt Taibbi the same day he was scheduled to testify before Congress. 6:05pm- In a series of Tweets, political commentator Greg Price highlighted the “terrifying” details hidden within the bipartisan Bill S.686—the proposed legislation to ban TikTok known as The RESTRICT Act. According to some reports, it gives federal government officials the authority to access and monitor the personal accounts (including emails and texts) of anyone they deem a risk. Equally astounding, a minimum fine of $250,000 and 20 years in prison could be brought against any who illegally access banned applications, like TikTok, through a virtual private network (VPN). 6:35pm- Is Rich going to dress up as Cher and sing “If I Could Turn Back Time”? Maybe. 6:40pm- During her Wednesday press briefing, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was asked whether the Biden Administration would endorse some form of “gun confiscation”—she failed to confirm or deny that it could be an ambition of the administration.

If you want to see if her Cher is as great as she claims (spoiler: it is), stick around for her performance of "If I Could Turn Back Time." This episode runs a little long since she was just so great to talk with. If you live in or visit the Seattle area, check her out in person at the Queer Bar or at The Cuff Complex, but you should check out her stuff on Instagram regardless where you live--she's babyvanbeezly there. Greg joins me again so that we can talk about Hotel Transylvania: Transformania. Lots of weird transformations happen in this movie, but we spend a fair amount of time on the weirdest transformation of them all. We also go on tangents about stuff like whipped cream on cheese cake and pizza. Give this a listen! Episode 42 is entitled “If I Could Turn Back Time.” Yes, it is a play on the Cher song, but I am focused on a serious question, can changes to the future force changes to the past? Scientists have recently discovered that Neutrinos, the only electrical neutral, non-mass particle, may travel faster than the speed of light. These scientists say that if their tests on neutrinos are true, time travel may be possible, at least time-based communications. In this episode, I discuss what would happen if something disturbed these neutrinos. What is human-made neutrinos disturbed the “order-of-things” and impacted the future? Think I have lost my mind yet? Come with me and take a walk into the paranormal. Little known fact: My very favorite song to sing is "If I Could Turn Back Time" by Cher. I tend to think it's because Cher has a nice alto voice I can sing along to with confidence. No super high notes here but plenty of delicious angst. But you know what? Now that I think about it, I'm wondering if my subconscious attached itself to this song because of my unrelated (but maybe related?) love of time travel stories. Perhaps part of me wishes I could, in fact, turn back time. Who knows? Regardless, the truth is that I LOVE TIME TRAVEL STORIES. And so does my friend (and friend of the show), Amanda White. So today, the time has come (see what I did there?) for us to talk about ALL our favorite time travel stories in books, TV shows, and movies. Now, I'll admit that we haven't read or watched all the time travel stories out there. But the ones we have? WE LOVE. So take a listen and let us know which time travel stories are your favorites. Which ones did we forget? How did YOU feel about The Knight Before Christmas? In which we say good-bye... and good riddance. Danica and Brandon are back to finally give their tipsy opinions on "Twice Upon A Time", the final Moffat era Doctor Who episode. And while it ALSO sadly marks the end of Peter Capaldi's time as the Doctor, they pull no punches. And sure, some might say we should have put this episode out before now, but here at Doctor Whooch, we like our takes like we like our drinks: on ice. So there. It is my belief that every human being has a natural rhythm, a pace at which he prefers to move. For me, that natural rhythm is the chorus of the 1989 Cher song, If I Could Turn Back Time. On the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, I gain an extra hour crossing from the Mountain to Pacific time zone. As I do so, I struggle against the synthesized internal drum beat that tells me to “just keep moving," and I take requests for the soundtrack of my life from the people I've met on my trip.

We have had an amazing start to Spring this year in Sydney so I thought it was time to spring a new edition of Heaven. Number 2 is all uplifting vocal house. It's not so much about how new is the track, although there a few new ones such as Kamaliya's "I'm Alive", 7th Heaven's "Love Is Alive" & another great LFB remix of Debby Holiday's Dive '13". It's more about how good does it make you feel, such as Cher's classic "If I Could Turn Back Time" & Matt Consola's remake of "Dream Of Me" featuring Brenda Reed. Cosmic Dawn also turn out a stunning mix of Pink's "Try". Enjoy this slice of Heaven.
