It makes for an admittedly lopsided comparison with FROM DUSK TILL DAWN, but also an illuminating one: examining Coogler's vision through the lens of the 1996 Robert Rodriguez/Quentin Tarantino teamup sheds light on the added depth SINNERS brings to its own vampire mythology, criminal-brother protagonists, and mid-film genre shift. And in Your Next Picture Show, we briefly imagine the conversation we could have had if we'd instead paired SINNERS with the Coen brothers' O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? Please share your thoughts about FROM DUSK TILL DAWN, SINNERS, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730.
Mystery Men was 1999's 68th-highest grossing movie, and an overall money loser. It arrived at a strange but opportune time, as it both lampooned and heralded the rebirth of the superhero genre. The early stages of its production date to the mid 1990s, when movies like 1998's Blade, often cited as the birthplace of the modern superhero film, began preproduction. Based on the comic book series by Bob Burden, Kinka Usher's Mystery Men was first offered to Danny DeVito and Stiller, who both turned it down for personal reasons. Usher landed the movie thanks to his reputation as a great director of commercials. But the movie's massive cast of established talent and big ambitions proved too much drama for Usher, who, according to Hank Azaria, said "I'm going back to commercials when this is done. I've had enough. I'd much rather do my cool little one-minute shorts that I make than deal with all this nonsense." Mystery Men is very much a product of its time, and is now considered a cult classic. It also stars the late Paul Reubens, so we decided now was the time to talk about it, and we invited filmmaker, pop culture junky, and die-hard Mystery Men evangelist Becky Ellis to join us.
In 1999, Ben Stiller got to play a superhero. Well, kind of. You see, he was one of the leads in Universal's big-budget superhero comedy Mystery Men. The first (and last) movie directed by noted commercial director Kinka Usher, the film landed with a thud in the summer of 1999, topping out at $33 million worldwide on a $68 million budget. Based on an obscure comic, Mystery Men always seemed like a risky bet at the box office, with star Ben Stiller, who plays Mr. Furious, having only recently begun to show any box office mettle thanks to There's Something About Mary. He was surrounded by an ace cast of character actors, including Janeane Garofalo, Hank Azaria, William H. Macy, Paul Reubens (aka Pee-Wee Herman) and Greg Kinnear. Still, none of them were household names at this point.Plagued by behind-the-scenes drama, with Stiller reportedly trying to quit after an on-set argument with Kinnear and Usher swearing off movie-making permanently, Mystery Men is little remembered now. Yet, the film has a tiny cult of fans who think it's an underrated gem, with Geoffrey Rush a particular favorite as the villain Casanova Frankenstein. It also features a cameo by none other than Michael Bay. So is this obscure entry into Stiller's filmography best forgotten? We dig into it in this week's episode of WTF Happened to this Movie?

The guys go all the way back to 1987 for Bob Burden's Flaming Carrot #16, the first appearance of the Mystery Men! If you like absurdist humor, this title has everything, from carrot-men and clones of Hitler's feet to a super-villain barbecue! Both Joe and Mike nerd out to the numerous references to other comics, as well as the first appearance of The Shoveler and Mr. Furious, who later appeared in Kinka Usher's 1999 movie.
Ditching Demme's "Beloved" due to it being horrifying, we decided to find a one-time director in Kinka Usher and his "Mystery Men." This Schumacher-esque superhero comedy failed at the box office but found a cult following. Was this a hidden gem or still just a guilty pleasure?

As our "flop" of summer blockbusters, Mystery Men bombed at the box office, not even surpassing half of their $68 million budget. With a star studded cast, and based on Bob Burden's Flaming Carrot comic, this movie was highly anticipated in the summer of '99. While first time director Kinka Usher showed glimpses of a great concept, ultimately the film fell short of budgets and expectations. Let's host a backyard pool party, hold superhero interviews on a foldable table, team-build on the Tony Robbins fire walk, and take our unique talents of silverware hurling, bowling, shoveling, deadly flatulence, and incompetent invisibility to save the city from the interim Captain of the Black Pearl... I mean Casanova Frankenstein. Please share with a friend, leave a review, and let us know what you think!
From box-office bomb to cult classic, Ben Stiller, Hank Azaria and William H. Macy lead a movie about superheroes with unimpressive powers in Mystery Men. Directed by Kinka Usher, Mystery Men is the superhero comedy film loosely based on Bob Burden's Flaming Carrot Comics. Luke and Jae revist this 1999 feature film which dissected the superhero genre in the early years of the genre's great emergence. Champion City already has a superhero in Captain Amazing (Greg Kinnear), but that doesn't deter the city's seven quirky amatueur crime-fighters, who use the Captain's capture at the hands of villain Casanova Frankenstein (Geoffrey Rush) as motivation to prove themselves. The only problem is that their strange powers - silverware hurling, bowling, shovel skills, incompetent invisibility, and deadly flatulence - aren't doing them any favours.

Our current panelists are Bobby Whalen, DC Dark, and Mister KAM, and Sugah Shade. Our artwork was created by SixShotStudios. Our theme tune was composed and performed by Derrick Streibig.
We've had a run of really bad movies so we're taking a much needed break and watching something of substance. Mystery Men is a superhero movie that parodies the feel of the Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher Batman movies and has a look that can only be called "Kinka Usher-esque". We get POV shots aplenty in this as the camera is in the fridge, in your face, in a bag, up your nose, in your butt, or wherever they felt like putting it that second. Starring SNL alums Ben Stiller and Janeane Garofalo as well as two guys who auditioned but didn't make the cast, Paul Reubens and Kel Mitchell, as well as Geoffrey Rush, Greg Kinnear, William H. Macy, Wes Studi, Eddie Izzard, Pras and Hank Azaria. It's a decent flick with some slight problems. Enjoy!Download Here

In this week's episode, the gang kicks off #SBE2014 with the dull film about wannabe superheroes, Mystery Men! Why make a movie about tertiary characters from a comic book no one really cares about?
