What happens when your body calls for change—and you actually listen? In this powerful episode, Alex sits down with Matthew Cooke, founder of Body-Based Breakthrough (B3), to explore how burnout led him away from the tech hustle and into the healing world of somatic coaching. With roots in high-performance culture and a life-changing crash into chronic stress, Matthew shares how he pieced together his own path to nervous system healing—one breath, one journal entry, and one movement at a time.Matthew opens up about the unexpected clarity he found in yoga classes and long walks, how he began listening to his body in new ways, and the moment a client told him, “It's a shame there's only one of you.” That nudge sparked the creation of B3—a replicable somatic system now used by coaches, therapists, and leaders around the world. From working with senior tech execs to certifying a new generation of somatic practitioners, Matthew's approach is both deeply personal and highly practical.Together, Alex and Matthew unpack the principles of B3, the importance of orientation and regulation, and how somatic practices are transforming how we live, lead, and heal. Whether you're a practitioner or someone simply curious about nervous system work, this episode is full of insights that will land in your body as much as your mind.Key Highlights: [00:00:05] Introducing Matthew Cooke and Body-Based Breakthrough (B3)[00:03:32] From tech startup to burnout at 24[00:05:38] Body and mind at war—seeking deeper understanding[00:06:33] Yoga and long walks spark clarity and insight[00:07:27] Journaling during movement—early seeds of B3[00:08:31] Clients experience reduced anxiety and imposter syndrome[00:09:47] “It's a damn shame there's only one of you”[00:10:25] B3 is born—systematizing somatic coaching[00:11:07] The endless curiosity of the nervous system[00:12:09] B3 practice components: movement, journaling, breathwork, coaching[00:12:31] The role of orientation—start and end of the practice[00:12:54] Nervous system safety and external environmentLinks & ResourcesBody-Based Breakthrough (B3) Website: https://www.bodybasedbreakthrough.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bodybasedbreakthrough/Somatic Experiencing by Peter Levine: https://www.somaticexperiencing.com/about-peter Polyvagal Theory by Dr. Stephen Porges: https://www.stephenporges.com/ Organic Intelligence by Steve HoskinsonDARe (Dynamic Attachment Repatterning experience) – Diane Poole Heller: https://traumasolutions.com/learn-dare-approach/ Irene Lyon's Nervous System Work – irenelyon.comFind us Online: Website: https://www.redbeardsomatictherapy.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/redbeardsomatictherapy/

Steve is the Founder and Chief Compassion Officer of Organic Intelligence. For over two decades, Steve has dedicated his life to understanding and healing trauma, and his paradigm-shifting approach has impacted countless lives across the globe. The Harmonic Egg is an egg-shaped resonant chamber that focuses the energy of sound, light and color to restore the body's balance and promote healing. The client steps inside the geometrically tuned egg and reclines in a zero gravity chair for 50 minutes while being bathed in light frequencies and music specifically selected to support the client's intention for the session. When I talk about the ancient future, THIS is the type of technology I'm talking about. Bringing back the wisdom of the ancients who worked with sound and light and geometry and marrying it with the technology of today for a truly gentle yet powerful way to experience the perfection of our body's ability to work with the elements to heal. Gail was led down this path on her own healing journey after being diagnosed with severe cardiovascular stress and at high risk for a heart attack at the age of 37 after a series of challenging relationships and jobs. After a series of whole body light and sound therapies reversed her diagnosis she set out to uncover both the ancient history and modern science behind light and sound as healing therapies and created something truly unique. Please enjoy my conversation with the Harmonic Egg inventor, Gail Lynn. To learn more about the resources mentioned in this episode, visit the show notes. We kick off this episode with a discussion on SAG-AFTRA's decision to authorize a strike again the video game studios that spirals into definitive proof that each one of the Say Reporters represent one end of the scale for video game enthusiasts. Then Devon's misunderstanding of this weeks assignment is still able to bear fruit when it serves to prove that Artificial Intelligence is nowhere near replacing the creative powers of Organic Intelligence, and that is precisely why now is the best time to create the standards for managing how we allow AI to be used in our society. Finally we see how long we can survive as we discuss Dimension Shellshock, the new DLC for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge and how we feel about the package and it's value as a whole.

Notable Quotes “Gratitude is a pretty cool and enjoyable feeling. And so when there are these enjoyable feelings that are particularly sort of low arousal like gratitude, because you can also have joy and ecstasy and excitement and all that, that's a bit more difficult to go into the body then. But when you have low arousal and positive energy, a really interesting question could be, oh, you feel gratitude now Luke, how does that gratitude manifest in the body? What's the felt sense of that in your experience right now? And maybe they don't even describe a physical sensation because maybe they're not ready to go into the body, or maybe that's not what's most present. But at least there's the invitation, and again, it's like a ritual quality of the deepest way in which we can land things in the present moment is through our somatic experience.” – Boaz (49:45) “The more that we cannot only deepen the way in which we use our presence, things like deep listening and things like that with others, that's certainly true in the way that it changes. But when we get that present, we become more present to what our experience is in relation to others. And that usually is going to surface things of helping people recognize some of maybe what they're struggling with or what are some of the things that come up for them when they're out and about in their other relationships the rest of their life. But if that can begin to come up as part of these interactions inside of a container that's been crafted, we can talk about those things, we can surface those things, we can explore those things and people feel safe and accepted and not judged while they're doing that because of the container that's been created.” – Luke (13:49) Our Guest Boaz Feldman is a practical visionary, experienced psychologist, keynote speaker, and trainer for worldwide positive change. He is a Somatic Experience Practitioner, Organic Intelligence core faculty, and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy graduate. Boaz founded NeuroSystemics, a somatically-centered approach for meditation training, therapy, and group therapy. In this week's episode, I interview Sophia Babai. Sophia is a writer, embodiment worker, and climate activist. She helps people reconnect to their natural wisdom and heal their relationships with their bodies and their shadows, so they can fall wildly in love with their lives, their planet, and each other. Sophia studied embodiment at Yale University, The Somatic School in London, and the Strozzi Institute. In this week's episode we covered:✨ Organic Intelligence as a somatic practice for trauma resolution, and also for thriving and enjoying your life✨ Sophia's Kundalini practice, and how it works with energy in the body and heals blocks, and again how it encourages embracing love and expressing creativity✨Sophia's journey of being very productivity and achievement focused with 3 jobs and bodily pain to shifting instead towards being present in the moment and feeling pleasure ✨Noticing the moment through the body, e.g. how fabric feels on your skin, stopping to smell the flowers and how that's possible even when you're in pain✨How Sophia's work supports people in letting themselves being loved, coming back to their body and back to the moment✨How energy vampirism shows up in relationships aka when we're giving out of obligation, we are in fact taking from people✨How people who are martyrs, are often terrible at receiving because it doesn't feel safe to receive✨The power of nature when it comes to healing those who worry about taking from others✨Why we need community for healingConnect with Sophia at instagram.com/sophia.babai or tinyurl.com/somatic-guidanceConnect with Caoilfhionn: https://www.caoinicc.com/about-me-invitation-to-1to1-coaching Instagram: @Caoilfhionn.nic.conmara Facebook: @CaoiniccJoin her mailing list and download her Free Great Sex Guide here: https://mailchi.mp/f30c2254bf30/greatsxguide

We communicate with people every single day, whether it's in person, over the phone, zoom call, text, or email. When it comes to our confidence journey it's important for us to feel confident in our speech. I used to be very quiet, but as I've grown up, I have found my voice a little bit more, but still, I really struggle with not feeling confident in my voice and whether people hear me. But it doesn't stop there. Oftentimes, my brain is going a million miles an hour and I am trying not to forget what I want to say, but then I also want to make sure that the person I am talking to actually hears what I am saying. Sometimes I wish I could just break through all of these thoughts I am having and come across as the smart, confident person I know that I am. I know that I am not alone in feeling this way, and I think that many of you probably struggle with feeling confident in your communication on some level. That's why I am so excited to bring you my conversation with the delightful Ryan O'Shea. Ryan O'Shea is a Los Angeles-based voice, accent, and communication coach. She has a background in acting and is a certified coach of Fitzmaurice Voicework, Knight-Thompson Speechwork, and Organic Intelligence. Remember when we thought the majority of the stress and strain of the pandemic was behind us? Well, now we're headed into summer and still carrying all of the stress and anxiety from the past two (plus) years. As Charlie says in the episode, "In the past couple years, what we have seen is the amount of intensity and complexity in our world and our country go sky high. And when the amount of complexity and intensity goes sky high, our nervous systems feel that in the form of more fight energy (like anger, frustration, irritation), more flight energy (fear, worry, insecurity, anxiety), or more freezy energy (like overwhelm or collapse). "I don't want to do anything", they might say. They feel lethargic and have low energy. When we're talking about our kids, what we would expect is that their nervous systems are now having to process and deal with a massive increase in complexity and intensity." About Charlie Ruce Charlie Ruce, LMFT is a licensed therapist with extensive training in trauma and understanding how the autonomic nervous system reorganizes itself at higher and higher levels. Charlie's primary training in this area comes from the model Organic Intelligence, founded by Steve Hoskinson. Charlie has been training with Steve since 2014. How do you lead? Leadership often gets confused with control, or even worse, domination. With bending people to our will and enforcing our way of doing things, but it doesn't have to work like that at all. The earth herself teaches us that systems thrive through balance, sensitivity and nuance. We are all part of the planet, so why would it be any different with people? As a leader, we have two choices. We can continue in the old way, placing ourselves above other people and working them for our own benefit, or we can imbue our leadership with the wisdom of nature. Julian Guderley believes that, like regenerative agriculture, which allows the natural world to teach us how to create ideal conditions for life according to its own unique complexity, we can return to the wisdom within ourselves and grow with the people around us. By opening our hearts to the unique strengths of every individual, by appreciating the intricacy and diversity of human nature, we can begin to practice regenerative leadership. Bringing people together from across the social, cultural and economic landscape of the world and providing them with the conditions to flourish and express their creative potential allows everyone to find their perfect niche. As a leader, therefore, we must nourish the world around us with wisdom, insight, guidance and support, empowering those around us, who can then go on to multiply our impact a hundred times over. Healing this world starts with healing its people, embracing who they are and channeling their gifts. This is the new paradigm of natural principles, organic intelligence and compassionate growth. Today I’m talking with Steve Hoskinson. Steve is the founder of Organic Intelligence® (OI) and the nonprofit Organic Intelligence Outreach Institute. OI’s Human Empowerment And Resiliency Training (HEARTraining®) is an international personal and professional development training program using OI’s strengths-based, trauma-safe approach for resiliency. As you’ll hear in our conversation, The Organic Intelligence® (OI) clinical protocol suggests that, from a systems perspective, what’s wrong with therapy is the focus on what’s wrong — including the focus on trauma. Organic Intelligence brings a necessary shift in perspective from pathology and trauma to the proven methods drawn from the wisdom of mindfulness and the science of self-organization. OI teaches how healing happens from the nervous system up and makes it possible to imagine freedom from suffering. Freedom from suffering becomes freedom for living an authentic, vibrant life in the here-and-now. Steve has trained thousands of trauma therapists, health professionals, mindfulness experts, and teachers. He presents at conferences worldwide, is Adjunct Faculty for JFK University’s Somatic Psychology program, a founding member of the Northern California Society for Integrative Mental Health and the International Transformational Resilience Coalition. You can find out more about Steve’s work and Organic Intelligence at www.organicintelligence.org Liberated Being is at www. liberatedbeing.community, and on Instagram we are @liberatedbeing. Hi Friends, This episode is a guided warm up that explores mindfulness, releasing physical tensions and connecting to your breath and voice. This warm up came out of our 3 last episodes, where we’ve been talking about what mindfulness, breathing and extraneous physical tensions have to do with the voice. Those episodes were the what and why, and this warm up explores the how: how can a practice that includes mindfulness, letting go of extraneous physical tension, and connecting to your breath help your voice feel more powerful and connected? We don’t do a lot of resonance, range or articulation work in this warm up, as it’s more about initial vocal connection from a mindful place of ease, so if you’re wanting more of that post-warm up, feel free to continue on from where we leave off, because the warm up here will set you up nicely for that work. If you’re lost as to what to do, check out some of our other warm ups.For this warm up, wear some comfy clothing and have a space on the floor you can lie down (and a mat if you like). Give yourself some privacy so you can make sound confidently. The exercises in this warm up are inspired by Organic Intelligence® and Fitzmaurice Voicework®. Let us know how it goes! Take good care, Christine & Lindsay

Hi Friends, This episode is Part 3 of our 3-part series, 'Staying Present in Unprecedented Times,' designed to support you through this crazy new world of isolation and uncertainty as we navigate the health crisis that is Covid-19. In Part 1, we took you through a mindfulness practice called Orientation to help you connect to the present moment through your senses. In Part 2, we combined Orientation with a body scan to help you feel more embodied as you orient to the present moment. In this episode, we dive deeper into both Orientation and the body scan practice so that you can connect on a physical level towards what is enjoyable about the present moment. This practice helps you not only come into the here and now in an embodied way, but strategically focus your perception on what you're enjoying about the here and now-- an invaluable skill in any time in life, but particularly right now, when you might be dealing with an unusual level of uncertainty, discomfort and anxiety. Orienting towards what's pleasant can help you communicate more from a place of connection, ease and even enjoyment, rather than anxiety, panic or stress. This practice is inspired by Organic Intelligence(r), which you can find out more about on www.organicintelligence.org, and Fitzmaurice Voicework(r), which you can find out more about at www.fitzmauriceinstitute.org. Please let us know how you get on with this practice, what questions it brings up for you, and what other kind of support you would like as we navigate these current times. Please also share this episode with anyone you think could use the support. Take good care, Christine & Lindsay
Hi Friends, This is part 2 of our 3 part series, 'Staying Present in Unprecedented Times', designed to support you through this crazy new world of isolation and uncertainty as we navigate the health crisis that is Covid-19. In Part 1, we took you through a mindfulness practice called Orientation to help you connect to the present moment through your senses. In this episode, we will practice orientation again, and then move into an oriented body scan so you can start to feel more connected to your body in the present moment, then we end with orientation from a more embodied place. This practice is useful if you find that your thoughts and feelings are consistently spiraling towards worries and anxieties that are not currently happening in the present moment, or if your awareness of the present moment is trending towards the negative. This sequence will help you find more ease in the present moment by helping you connect to the neutral reality of the here and now, and maybe even to what's pleasant about the here and now-- so that if and when you need to communicate, it's from a place of ease and connection rather than panic and anxiety. Hi Friends, There's no doubt about it-- these are some unprecedented times. At the time we are publishing this episode, the UK and much of Europe are on lockdown-- we don't know how long it's going to go on and how much our world is going to change by the time we get through the health crisis caused by Covid-19. If you're like us, you may be finding yourself particularly isolated and anxious these days. We created a three-part series to help you stay present and find some ease in these crazy times. This episode is the first part, and will take you through a practice called 'Orientation', which is essentially connecting to the environment you're in through your five senses of sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste-- so that you can connect to the neutral reality of the here and now, and maybe even what's pleasant about the here and now. This practice is especially useful if you find that your thoughts and feelings are consistently spiraling towards fear/worry/anxiety about the future, or even if your focus in the present moment is consistently getting drawn towards 'what's wrong' with the present moment. Orientation can help you come back to other aspects of the reality of here and now-- from what's okay to even what's pleasant-- so that it's easier for you to access the full range of your experience. This helps ensure that, as and when you need to communicate, you can communicate from a place of connection and ease. Orientation is a useful practice for any time in life, but particularly right now. Orientation is something we do naturally, but the wording of this practice is inspired by a body of work called Organic Intelligence(r). To learn more about Organic Intelligence, you can listen to our previous podcast episode, 'How to Become More Present: Conversation with Craig Deuchar' and/or at www.organicintelligence.org. Please let us know how you get on with this practice, what questions it brings up for you, and if you have other ideas around how we can support you at this time. Please also share this episode with anyone you feel could use this support. Take good care, Christine & Lindsay
Hey Friends, Are you looking to become more present in your communication, or just in general? In this episode, Christine talks with her dear friend and colleague Craig Deuchar about a body of work called Organic Intelligence(r), and why it can be a useful practice to help you become more present generally and in your communication. Christine started working with Craig on an OI practice almost two years ago, and it has completely transformed the way she approaches communication training. Organic Intelligence is a mindfulness and compassion based clinical approach designed to alleviate the symptoms of stress, anxiety and trauma and help people live more present and vibrant lives. Christine talked to Craig about why, as a practice, it can help people become more present communicators. Themes that come up are: - how OI can help alleviate the stress and anxiety that often comes with public speaking and performance by helping you take your attention off of "what's wrong" - An explanation of how Fight/Flight/Freeze states can take over in communication situations, and how a practice called Orientation can help you not only reconnect to yourself and your environment, but even find more enjoyment and curiosity in your communication - how OI is different from (and yet complementary to) other mindfulness based approaches and public speaking training/actor training approachesYou can find out more about Organic Intelligence at www.organicintelligence.org. Craig is a voice, presence and OI coach and does some corporate communication work. He works with the nervous system to help people get more regulated on a biological level and how that manifests into their lives in a positive way, whether through an OI session or a voice session or an acting session. Find out more about him at www.craigdcoaching.co.uk. Take good care, Christine & Lindsay

This episode is a practical sequence to warm you up mentally, physically and vocally for social situations. Inspiration for this sequence came from an earlier episode, Episode 1 of Season 2, ‘Voice Work for Social Situations’ where we answered a question from a listener about why it can be hard to apply voice technique to social situations. This is a practical sequence that addresses the solutions we talked about in that episode. This sequence is for you if:you ever experience anxiety in social situations. This is designed to help ground you so that you can find more enjoyment in your social experienceYou ever struggle with being heard in social contexts. If you find yourself mumbling, speaking too fast or struggling in loud environments The sequence includes exercises that will: help you feel more grounded and at ease in your environment and in your body help you breathe better help you speak more clearly while still feeing authentic, especially in louder environments It’s designed to do before you go into a social situation, and at the end of the episode Christine gives you things to think about when you’re in the social context, so that you can apply the tools you learn in the sequence directly to the situation. While this is a great warm up for social situations, public speaking and acting are also social situations, so feel free to also use this as a warm up for any context where you want to communicate with more ease. Special reference is made to a body of work called Organic Intelligence, which is where the orientation exercises come from. You can find out more about OI at www.organicintelligence.org. We hope this warm up makes communicating in social situations more enjoyable for you! Let us know how it goes.

Speaking Of... Conversations on Voice, Speech, and Identity with Ryan O'Shea
In this episode of Speaking Of… I’m joined by my friend and colleague, Helena Walsh. Helena has a thriving voice studio in Dublin, Ireland, though her teaching covers so much more than voice. One of Helena’s current class offerings is called “The Actor’s Practice,” a 10 week advanced actor training practice using Fitzmaurice Voicework, Organic Intelligence and other leading voice and body methods. The class aims to “build resilience in the mind & body so that the imagination can be free to create a more energized and vibrant sense of self, character & storytelling. This resilience will make it easier to risk in life, in an audition, in the rehearsal room, on set & on stage.” Helena is a brilliant teacher and mentor, and I took the opportunity to ask Helena about how she developed her class, and what practices she recommends actors develop regardless of where they are in their career. You can find complete show notes and links to everything we’ve mentioned in the episode on https://www.voiceandspeechwithryan.com/podcast.
