Join Mike Taber, David McNally, Anne McShane, & Tom Alter for a discussion about the Second International's strengths, weaknesses, & legacy. This event took place on October 26, 2023. At its height, the Second (Socialist) International (1889-1914) represented the majority of organized workers in the world, with the stated revolutionary aim of overthrowing capitalism. To mark the release of Reform, Revolution, and Opportunism—a collection of debates at congresses of the Second International—join editor Mike Taber, along with David McNally, Anne McShane, and Tom Alter, for a discussion about the Second International's strengths, weaknesses, contradictions, and legacy. The speakers will draw out the relevance of socialist debates from more than a century ago on topics that remain deeply contested: militarism and war, immigration, colonialism and imperialism, women's rights, and socialist participation in government. ———————————— Get a copy of Reform, Revolution, Opportunism: https://www.haymarketbooks.org/books/... ———————————— Speakers: Mike Taber has edited and prepared a number of books related to the history of revolutionary and working-class movements—from collections of documents of the Communist International under Lenin to works by James P. The idea of a return to something is very dangerous to me, because it's the something that got us where we are today. – Christopher Harris Who gets to decide what images mean, and why they have worth? For a documentary photograph to say something meaningful about the world, we have to believe that it's faithfully capturing that world. In this way, photography is a lot like another modern invention, paper money. In this episode, historian David McNally and filmmakers Christopher Harris and Jackie Goss talk about how the circulation of money and images influences what we trust, and who we mistrust. Featuring: Christopher Harris, David McNally, and Jackie Goss

Against the Market, w/ David McNally Even though capitalism's problems are becoming increasingly obvious, commitment to fight for an alternative to capitalism – rather than a regulated capitalism -- is still weak. Part of the problem is the belief that markets are the least-bad way of producing and distributing goods and services. This episode is an interview with David McNally, editor in chief of the journal Spectre, about capitalism, markets and the alternative of democratic planning. 2023 is the 30th anniversary of the publication of his book. In recognition of the great service and sacrifice of those brave men and women, Mr. Black will be sharing a great story about the return of a Vietnam Veteran after 7 years in captivity as an enemy combatant in Vietnam. Gerald L. Coffee is the man who the story is about. He was shot down over the China Sea on February 3, 1966, and 7 years later, was released to return to his family on February 3, 1973. The story that is recounted is by David McNally from, “The Power of Optimism”, by Alan Loy McGinnis. The story is a great reminder of how things can always be much worse, and how we need to do our best in whatever moment we find ourselves in. The greater message of the story is that our Beliefs matter, and used properly they can propel us to be overcomers and over-achievers if we are willing to remember, the RIGHT THINGS! Join Haymarket Books and Spectre Journal for a discussion of Neoliberalism and the future of the global economy. After the failures of Keynesianism in the 1970s, the capitalist classes of the world turned to neoliberalism to discipline workers and restore profitability. Are states returning to Keynesianism? Will that work? Why is the world economy locked in a slump? On this week's show, Prof. Wolff presents updates on his recent debate with Ayn Rand Institute on capitalism vs socialism, inflation in Europe, an analysis of right vs left splitting in US today, and real vs fake causes of energy price inflation. The second half of the show features an interview with David McNally, Prof, University of Houston, on lessons of capitalism's history.
Dialectics Demystified, w/ David McNally Marxism is usually associated with the concept of dialectics, but what is dialectics? Is Marxist theory "dialectical materialism"? Should dialectics be rejected as "unscientific," as mainstream academics argue? Or should it be discarded as part of European Enlightenment ideology that makes false claims to universal truth, as others claim? David McNally discusses these issues in a clear and accessible way. *Producer's Note* Any audio glitches or dropouts are the result of internet issues at the time of recording. For the first HM online panel this year, please join us for a discussion of David McNally's book: 'Blood and Money: War, Slavery, Finance'. 'In most accounts of the origins of money we are offered pleasant tales in which it arises to the mutual benefit of all parties as a result of barter. In this groundbreaking study David McNally reveals the true story of money's origins and development as one of violence and human bondage. Money's emergence and its transformation are shown to be intimately connected to the buying and selling of slaves and the waging of war. Blood and Money demonstrates the ways that money has “internalized” its violent origins, making clear that it has become a concentrated force of social power and domination. Where Adam Smith observed that monetary wealth represents “command over labor,” this paradigm shifting book amends his view to define money as comprising the command over persons and their bodies.'(Text taken from the book cover.) Join us for this discussion with David McNally (author, editor of Spectre Journal, Professor of History at University of Houston), joined by Maia Pal (HM editorial board) & Tithi Bhattacharya. Join us for a discussion on the state of the global economy with activist economists David McNally and Hadas Thier. As the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic continues to unfold across the world it has become increasingly obvious that we've only seen the first wave of shocks it will send through the global economy before things “return to normal.” Each week brings a new and completely unprecedented turn—from record setting unemployment claims, to the total implosion of oil prices. And while the conditions of lockdown are undoubtedly the catalyst for the turmoil roiling through global markets, what if it's Capitalism's “normal” that paved the way for the economic crisis looming on the horizon? In this virtual teach-in, radical economists David McNally (author of the essential Global Slump) and Hadas Thier (author of the forthcoming A People's Guide to Capitalism) will try to help activists make sense of the twists, turns, and sudden collapses in the world economy that have been playing out in the background during this global health emergency.

Great conversation with Dr. Brayton. Today we talk about movies, tv shows, sport, social constructions of the body, race, concussion, politics and power. Was a treat! FYI this was my first attempt at recording in person and I moved out to the garage. Unfortunately, this resulted in a less controlled sound environment and worse sound quality than other episodes. However, what I lost in sound quality I made up with rapport. In-person conversations just have a better flow. Hope you enjoy it and I have now learned the consequences of reverberation in the podcast world.
The conventional economic wisdom holds that humans started to use money as an outgrowth of bartering — and that money represented a great leap forward for civilization. That couldn't be further from the truth, argues David McNally. Money, he contends, has not been a benign development, but has since its inception been tied to warfare and slavery. USA står i brand igen. Oliver Jakubík hovorí: “Predávať by sme mali nepredajom. Nemáme radi, keď nás niekto presviedča, znásilňuje k nákupu. Radi sa rozhodujeme. Prestaňme predávať a začnime vytvárať chuť nakupovať.
Joining me in this episode is make up and brand consultant, Miles Berdache. He shares a preview of his Bedroom to Boardroom to Broadcast video series, a 4-video series that talks about the important elements and steps to help women express their “Visual Message” across. What is a Visual Message? “To me is really being in alignment with who your target market is.” - Miles If you're a fitness instructor, and your goal is to attract CEO business type clientele, you're probably not going to look like Lady Gaga in your video. However, if your target market is millennials who like Lady Gaga, you might want to look like Lady Gaga in your video. So your visual message is really dependent on who you're trying to attract and how you do it. It's one thing to have wild, outrageous, fun makeup. There's always a time and a place for that. But it may not be the time and the place for your business if your goal is to attract clients who are completely on a different wavelength. Forbes magazine put out a study that only 7% of our message is our message. 35% is our tone and how we deliver our message. 55% of the decision process to do business with us is based on our appearance and our body language. More than half of why people are making a decision to do business with you is based on how you're visually representing what you're doing. People are choosing to do business with you, so you are the brand. One of the best books I think I've ever read was ‘Be Your Own Brand’ by David McNally and Carl D. Speak. Mistakes That People Do In Their Videos With makeup and hair, I think the biggest mistake that a lot of people are making is they're just not doing it. They think that they can get away with this whole authenticity. The lights are going to completely wash you out so the makeup is actually used to bounce information back to the camera. There's all science behind makeup and what it does for the camera and it's based on the light. Miles’ Advice on Evaluating Your Visual Message The number one thing to do when you're evaluating your visual messages: really work backwards. Take a look at who your ideal client is, and what they may be looking for. And then ask yourself, is that how you're being representing yourself? I think that's the number one thing I would tell your listeners is to just really make sure that you are aligning your message with not only your brand but your ideal client! In today's world, personal branding is more important than ever. I wanted to discuss what personal branding is, how to go about it and examples of how other world-famous filmmakers branded themselves. What is the definition of personal branding?Personal branding is the practice of marketing people and their careers as brands. It is an ongoing process of developing and maintaining a reputation and impression of an individual, group, or organization. Whereas some self-help practices focus on self-improvement, personal branding defines success as a form of self-packaging. The term is thought to have originated from an article written by Tom Peters in 1997. In Be, Your Own Brand, first published in 1999, marketers David McNally and Karl Speak wrote: "Your brand is a perception or emotion, maintained by somebody other than you, that describes the total experience of having a relationship with you."Individuals sometimes associate personal names or pseudonyms with their businesses. Celebrities may also leverage their social status to support organizations for financial or social gain. For example, Kim Kardashian endorses brands and products through her media influence. - WikipediaI also discuss why I legally changed my name to Alex Ferrari when I was 18 years old. I hope you start thinking of not only what your personal brand is but also how to build it. Enjoy!

We are currently witnessing what appears to be the death of the micro sect form of political organization, a bastard form of the Leninist party that has all but dominated the minuscule and embattled American radical left for the past half century. The political landscape has changed in a way that has rendered these groups obsolete, removing the sectarian left's monopoly on socialist politics in the US, but what will replace it?Dare we be hopeful for a bright new era?LOLThe New Communist Movement: An Obituaryhttps://www.marxists.org/history/erol/ncm-7/mrl-obit.htm?fbclid=IwAR21HRylPBOW_OuyET7G4gIdgQnTHI_Qfy430OQnF9f_vScuQG3zIunN_q4Hal Draper’s the Anatomy of the Microsecthttps://www.marxists.org/archive/draper/1973/xx/microsect.htmHal Draper’s the Alternative to the Microsect https://www.marxists.org/archive/draper/1971/alt/alt.htmWarning about microsect organizing from David McNally in 2009http://davidmcnally.org/p=1077&fbclid=IwAR1giyezHhZfnQPDzKvu2YvJoBp31_JWtnSXDBqypJ_saOd8GIlZeih7mt0Socialism In One Organizationhttps://failedharvest.com/blog/socialism1orgJohn Riddell on the SWPPart Onehttps://johnriddell.wordpress.com/2012/07/05/the-u-s-swp-attempts-an-outward-turn-1977-83/ Part Twohttps://johnriddell.wordpress.com/2012/07/08/causes-of-a-socialist-collapse-the-u-s-swp-1976-83/ The Sect Systemhttps://libcom.org/library/sect-systemSong: Bill Bailey (The Ultimate Sectarian) Joe Glazer and Bill FriedmanSupport the show (http://patreon.com/theregrettablecentury)

The left has been traditionally defined, in its most radical form, as a movement of the working class against capitalism. What changed over the last half century? Not only has the working class not been at the forefront of radical politics, but radical politics itself has waned. Why have resistance movements become more sporadic? And what lessons can be drawn from the past to re-energize leftwing collective action in the age of Trump? Political economist David McNally talks about the past and future of radical class-based politics. The post The Working Class and Anticapitalism appeared first on KPFA.

First published in 1983, Lise Vogel's seminal work, Marxism and the Oppression of Women: Towards a Unitary Theory, was seized on by a generation of feminists who called themselves Marxist feminists, but were finding the fragmentation of socialism and feminism difficult to navigate. Now republished, it was launched (or, rather, re-launched) at the Historical Materialism Conference in London in late 2014. Pod Academy was at the launch, and recorded the platform speakers: Lise Vogel, Professor (retired) of Sociology at Rider University and the author of numerous books and articles. Before becoming a sociologist, she had an earlier career in art history. Dr. Tithi Battacharya. associate professor at Purdue Liberal Arts University in the US, Kate Davison, of Melbourne University Dr Sue Ferguson, Associate Professor of Digital Media and Journalism at the Wilfrid Laurier University in Canada, who co-wrote, with David McNally, the introduction to the new edition of the book. The Shut-Down continued throughout the first two weeks of October, as Congress and the White House struggled to come up with the necessary legislative formula before October 17 when, we are told, a “debt default” would result should no deal be reached. A major sticking point was the refusal of the House of Representatives, controlled by the Republican Party, to approve of government funding up until the middle of December, unless President Obama's Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as ObamaCare, was delayed a year and then gutted of a key provision, namely the tax on medical devices. The gridlock was finally broken when President Obama “stared down” the Republicans in the House leaving ObamaCare mostly intact. Appropriatations Bill HR 2775 was approved, bringing an end to the government shut down, maintaining government funding until January 15, and lifting the already stratospheric $16.699 trillion debt ceiling until February 7. But as some observers, such as broadcast journalist and author Stephen Lendman points out, default or no, ordinary Americans have had to bear the burden of the real fiscal crisis which has been masked by this legislative game of chicken. Lendman also levels a critique of ObamaCare that you won't hear from House Republicans, and he explains how the crisis engulfing the city of Detroit mirrors America's future. Stephen Lendman presents his perspective in the first half hour of the Global Research News Hour. In the second half hour, a York University Professor of Political Science, David McNally, helps expand the discussion by elaborating on the roots of the US fiscal crisis in neo-liberal reforms. He argues that the stand-off and the 2008 economic slump that preceded it, are rooted in the development of policies that have benefited the most privileged, including the banks, at the expense of the working class, who are now being made to pay for the excesses of the ultra-wealthy. McNally also probes the mistakes of the Occupy Movement as he sees it, and articulates how an effective push back may be realized. David McNally provides his analysis in the final half hour.

Indian Chief's Grand Chief Stewart Phillip also appeared on the program, and Jahanzeb Hussain took on some of that interview. Political Science professor David McNally has monsters on the mind. In his new book Monsters of the Market Zombies, Vampires, and Global Capitalism (published by Haymarked) McNally draws on popular culture, folklore and literature to better account for our understanding of capitalism and labour. Madeline Schwartz wrote a piece for Dissent Magazine entitled Opportunity Costs: The True Price of Internships. In the article, she said that a feminist perspective is needed to understand internships. Then Rabble.ca podcast Feminist Current called her up. Here is Madeline Schwartz in conversation with Feminist Current host Meghan Murphy. Human trafficking is recognized as a modern day version of slavery. It has a tremendous impact on the poor. But human trafficking affects all of us, not just the people directly involved. Lila Shahani made that point as part of a lecture about human trafficking in a Phillipine, Canadian, and Global Context at the University of British Columbia this month.
