Tonight we played "Stump the Chump" and our Co Host El Carpe was the .....well, with a little help...you listen and decide (he cheated, just like his golf game). We showcased eclectic, iconic, diverse brilliant singer song writers that have stood the test of time. We previewed musicians and bands from the 60's through the 90's (except for one somewhat overrated "musician/artist"). They all have unique qualities that separate themselves from everyone else heard today, literally. Our focus was to remind you of lost music that you no longer hear on the radio (thanks Bill Clinton). Who the heck listens to the radio anymore anyway. These are all a reminder of the beautiful music that is becoming more difficult to experience. Buy that vinyl and invite friends over...read your liner notes. Who are we talking about? The Pixies, REM, Tom Waits, Joni Mitchell, Lisa Gerrard (Dead Can Dance), Dave Mathews Band, Patti Smith, The Replacements (please go buy the album "Let it Be"), Queen (Rolling Stones voted number 1 band to see LIVE for nearly a decade), Carly Simon, Paul Simon, Nirvana, Sugarcubes and.....well, nevermind....not mentioning the last one. Remember, our show is never edited, rehearsed, researched...its always LIVE just like Memorex (probably too young to remember). So, dig into your parents vinyl and CD collection and give them a spin, you wont regret it. Most of today's music sucks. It's ALWAYS an unguarded moment. Thanks for listening. We might be on next week, and maybe on time, El Carpe.

Jennifer Madsen is a prized fixture on performing stages of the West. A lifelong singer and actress, her early career included being a cast member of Brigham Young University's famed performing group the Young Ambassadors. That experience founded her love of the art and afforded her the chance to sing, dance, and act for audiences across the globe. Using her strong foundational understanding for the craft, Jennifer left BYU and began to formally instruct students in all areas of performing. Her students from these early days have gone on to lead successful careers as Tony, Grammy and Emmy Award-winning artists. She has had several students on American Idol and its predecessor, Star Search. One such student even went on to become a Star Search season finale winner. Her celebrated instruction continues to this day, as a former voice and musical theatre instructor at Utah Valley University and currently as part of Snow College's award-winning music department. Jennifer Madsen studied voice with Jeri Clinger and big band vocalist from Stan Kenton's orchestra, William “Smiling Bill” Stoker. Her recent studies include spending several summers in New York City completing her professor's certification in the Margolis Method for Acting. Her continued studies in this methodology infuse her vocal performance studio with techniques and tools for helping musicians and performers to connect viscerally with their music, lyrics and performance. Jennifer's accomplishments run deep as a producer, director, studio session singer and choreographer. Some of her more recent productions include The Sound of Music (Musical Director/Choreographer) at Robert Redford's renowned Sundance Summer Theater; Inside the Outside (Music Producer) with Grammy award winning saxophonist, Jeff Coffin of the Dave Mathews Band (partially recorded on her musical tour to Cuba,) Don't Look Down (Music Producer); the award-winning independent film Masque (Music Production); and various projects with BYU Broadcasting (Music Producer). Jennifer's recognition for such work includes multiple Downbeat Music Awards and several Utah Best of State awards for her work with Caleb Chapman's Crescent Super Band. She recently participated in the Essentially Ellington competition at Jazz at the Lincoln Center where her long time student, Isabella Johnson, was awarded outstanding vocalists. Aside from her many lauded achievements, Jennifer has never lost sight of the passion rooted in all of her life's work – performing what she loves for the people she loves. She's had the privilege of doing so with the Spokane Jazz Orchestra, the Timpanogos Symphony Orchestra, Salt Lake Choral Artist, the Utah Valley Symphony, and on numerous albums including work with Kenneth Cope. Recently, Jennifer completed a lifelong goal of performing at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City where she sang at the famous Dizzy's Jazz Club to the delight of fans, friends, and family. My Chemical Romance - The Black Parade (2006) Gerard Way, Ray Toro, Frank Lero, Mikey Way, Bob Bryar Produced by Rob Cavallo Our summer of nostalgia finally ends with a seminole album in the hearts of many that grew up in the 2000's era. We're here to talk about an album that capitalized on the resurgence of the "rock-opera", and exponentially expanded the theatrical elements of what Green Day did with American Idiot years prior. This is the longest period we've gone without recording, so the first 5-7 minutes is us catching up on Austin's recent trip to The Gorge in Washington to see Dave Mathews Band, as well as him moving out to his first apartment - meanwhile, Alex's only ongoing thing is his recent foray into exercise and completion of the Twin Peaks series. We're getting quite sloshed on this one while drinking 'Toki' Japanese Blended whisky. Thank you for listening.

Tara Lipinski is the 1997 world champion and 1998 Olympic champion in women's singles figure skating. She was the first woman to complete a triple loop, triple loop combination jump in front of judges, and when she turned professional, she won every competition she entered during her professional skating career. Her second career as a broadcast commentator and tv host began when she joined NBC, teaming up with commentator Terry Gannon and her now good friend Johnny Weir, she bought a bright, fresh, fun, and accessible approach to figure skating commentary that she has now expanded into a larger role as an analyst for both the winter and summer Olympics. In her conversation here with Nic, Tara talks about her admiration and respect for Kristi Yamaguchi and Scott Hamilton, transitioning into her broadcast career with Johnny Weir, and shares her opinion on the seemingly endless ways Russia finds to cheat in the sport, most recently in the Beijing Winter Olympics. Tara also talks about the music that has played a central part in her life. From winning medals skating to the soundtrack of the animated movie 'Anastasia' to the songs of Stevie Nicks, Bob Seger, NSYNC, Motown and her favorite artist of all time, Dave Mathews Band.

In this edition of The Way Out, we bring you my interview with Author of the new Book “My Life with Karma”, Recovery Coach, and person in long term recovery Travis Sackett. Travis shares his journey to and through recovery to this point with true humility and genuine relatability. Travis's story is ultimately one of survival of a tumultuous childhood and subsequent, rather wicked addiction to OxyContin which lead to nearly losing everything but his life, a life which Travis contemplated ending. Everything, including his job in law enforcement and indeed his freedom in having to spend time in jail as a former law enforcement officer. Everything, and Everything, except his rescue dog, aptly named Karma. Travis and Karma became constant companions in recovery, a recovery which led to successfully treating and addressing both his addiction and mental health, and that lead no longer merely surviving, but truly thriving in recovery and indeed life so listen up. I LOVE music!!! It certainly soothes the savage beast within me, and I imagine it does the same for many of ya'll as well ;) I've never been much of a "Bucket List" kind of gal, yet it was hard to not resonate with the idea when an opportunity to fullfill a desired earthly experience recently presented itself to me. In this episode you'll hear about the musical experience that became the first item added to AND checked off my newly created Bucket List ;) Whether or not your a fan of this particular band, I gently suggest that you envision YOUR favorite band and remind yourself that YOU TOO can have a similar experience, should you decide it's important enough. That being said, what's more important than allowing yourself some time to truly experience some of what this life has to offer? AND if music in general is not your thing, than I heavily suggest that you replace music with whatever ARE your bucket list desires and get busy checking off items :) ROCK ON!! About the Show: In this episode of the podcast, we sit down with musician and live music expert, https://talkbusiness.net/2016/01/brian-crowne-named-vice-president-of-walmart-amp/ (Brian Crowne) to discuss the growth of the Music venue scene here in Northwest Arkansas. Brian and his family have owned https://georgesmajesticlounge.com/ (George's Majestic Lounge) on Dickson St for more than two decades. And, if that wasn't enough he purchased the https://waltonartscenter.org/amp/ (AMP) in the early 2000s and proceeded to help make Northwest Arkansas a regular stop for music acts both big and small. Brian's goal all along with the purchase of the AMP was to create, “ A small town vibe with world-class amenities!” It looks like he has done just that, attracting a lot of big names to the Northwest Corner of the State. So many great acts have performed at the https://waltonartscenter.org/amp/ (Walmart AMP), including http://primusville.com/ (Primus), https://www.theb52s.com/ (The B52s), https://www.charliedaniels.com/ (The Charlie Daniels Band), https://hankjr.com/ (Hank Williams Jr)., https://www.earthwindandfire.com/ (Earth Wind & Fire), https://lynyrdskynyrd.com/ (Lynyrd Skynyrd), https://www.zztop.com/ (ZZ Top), https://www.dariusrucker.com/ (Darius Rucker), https://willienelson.com/ (Willie Nelson), https://www.maryjblige.com/ (Mary J. Blige), https://www.steelydan.com/ (Steely Dan), https://www.santana.com/ (Santana), https://www.davematthewsband.com/ (Dave Mathews Band), https://tobymac.com/ (Toby Mac), and several comedians including https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Hart (Kevin Hart), and recently https://jimgaffigan.com/ (Jim Gaffigan). Brian shares the thinking and process of running a music venue here in Northwest Arkansas. It's not an easy job dealing with performance artists, but Brian has had a lot of practice taking good care of his employees and the talent that comes to the area. Learn about the origins of the AMP. For instance, the original location was the parking lot of the Northwest Arkansas Mall in Fayetteville before it moved up to its current space in Rogers just off I-49, and more importantly, how Brian teamed up with one of the largest companies in the world, Walmart to expand and improve the venue. Was feeling in the music vibe of Dave Mathews Band today so I decided to shift our focus and ask the question should we spend more time asking the question: Where are we going Or spend more time in The Space Between It's easy to study or desire to be the next Bored Ape Yacht clubut I feel the real magic in this space will happen those that are studying the 2ETH and 5 ETH projects and understand what they did along the way to get there. Time travel, am I right? Alex and Austin are tackling a character drama with heavy sci-fi elements in Rian Johnson's 2012 film Looper. We get into our recent experience seeing the Dave Mathews Band in concert, make some badly-dated comments about us seeing Brockhampton soon (RIP), and argue confusedly about the logistics of time travel as implemented in the movie. Joseph Gordon Levitt does a great Bruce Willis impression, and has a strange semi-romance with Emily Blunt. Also, we discuss the particulars of Bruce Willis's contract (he MUST be a badass).

Host Scott Ramsay is joined by Jason Carver and Brent Reger, two of the founding members of the Hermosa Beach band Barley. Jason got a late start to the live music scene, his first concert was the Dave Mathews Band, when he was 19. Brent didn't wait that long, he saw Rush way before he could drive. Both musicians attribute those first concerts as their reason for wanting to play live music. Check out Barley's music: https://open.spotify.com/artist/2Mv4qM7aYgU4UpjrdnwCUy
The Iconic Tawatha Agee and I discuss her work with Aretha Franklin, The Dave Mathews Band, Lenny Kravitz, Sting, Bob Dylan, Phyllis Hyman, Teddy Pendergrass, Luther Vandross, Stephanie Mills, Ray Charles, James Mtume, and so, so many more. So would you please help me welcome the most famous singer in the music business whose name you may not know?
Diana Rao Says I Should Write a Book (as do many others) An email to Diana Rao, one of our volunteers who was going skiing. My cousin, Mike Crim, and his teenage daughter were skiing in CO and he hit a tree and died on the slope. His wife and teenage son were back at the lodge that day because they were sick. Mike worked for a place in Tampa called In The News and did the framed Big Cat Rescue article in the Party House for us. His mother, Carole, is my mother's only sister and my namesake. She had six boys. Matt, her eldest, is the one I was raised with by our Grandmother "Momma Jacquie" (of Momma Jacquie's Cool Cat Cafe) Matt and his girlfriend was my private tour on Saturday. Matt had worked with Jamie on the Dave Mathews Band contest we did at Skipper's Smokehouse because they are DMB groupies. Both of our mothers worked full time back in the 60's so Momma Jacquie raised Matt & I until we were old enough for school. Jamie was her first great grandchild and she really wanted Jamie to go to college, but Jamie finished high school 2 years early as Valedictorian of her little private school so that she could help me run the sanctuary when Don left in 1997. She never got the chance to follow her path, and when Momma Jacquie offered to send her to college, she asked that the money be donated to the sanctuary so we could build Food Prep instead. Back then Jamie had cuts all over her from working in the tight quarters of our old Food Prep that was in a truck body in front of Apollo and Zeus. Imagine all of the people slinging knives during food prep in a space that was only about 3 feet wide and 15 feet long, and that was what Food Prep was like. A real nightmare! Coincidentally, in 1997 we lost Don, my aunt Carole lost her husband Duane, who was Mike's dad, and we lost my grandfather, Big Daddy (the odd names were because he and Momma Jacquie told everyone they were my parents when I was little.) Two years later Jamie lost her half brother Mickey in a car accident on his 29th birthday. You have probably seen the sign on Jumanji's cage that she had made to commemorate the loss. From his obituary: CRIM, Michael, 41, of Temple Terrace, Fla., died in a skiing accident, December 24, 2009. A devoted servant of the Lord, husband, father, son, brother, uncle and lifetime friend, he selflessly gave in everything he did. Heaven is richer, our lives are poorer. All in one email it seems like a lot of tragedy, but we have a huge family, so it probably isn't much different than the average over all. And her reply: WOW Carole, it truly is a tragedy that he died so young and the fact that your family is so large doesn't lessen the sense of loss. Your family lost someone who sounds like a wonderful, active and caring man. My heart goes out to you and all the others. It seems like all of you are very close and share a lot of experiences and not having him there will be sad. I think the loss of a loved one, be he/she friend or family is something no one ever gets "used to". The pain is always sharp and the sense of loss is always great. I think the only thing we learn from our many losses is that the passage of time does eventually heal and sweetens our memories. The last sentence of his obituary, "Heaven is richer, our lives are poorer" is one of the most beautiful tributes to someone I have read. On a different note, I hope that somewhere in your very busy schedule you have taken or can take some time to document and keep a written history of your family's rich and varied history, I don't need to say how unique your family is in all the many things you have accomplished and all the experiences all of you have gained in achieving the creation of BCR. It would make fascinating reading and at the least should be put in writing as a gift to your family. Personally I find Jamie an amazing person with unlimited talents and drive and I don't really know her (not that I wouldn't love to rectify that). All the photos that she has taken over the years could be a perfect accompaniment to your family history book. WOW!!! I could just see it now. Will work on a title for the book :) . Actually, to take it a step further (and this book may already exist without my knowledge), a book detailing how you went from owning exotic pets to advocating against them being kept as pets with all the twists and turns would make a fascinating read. Not only for those that know you personally or are involved in BCR but just as a good read. I have told you before that the best part of the volunteer meetings has ALWAYS been your stories not only of the animals but at times of how you got from point A to point B. In our safari guide there are is a summary of how BCR was created but I know there is sooooooo much more to it. Your story should be in one giant picture filled book. You are an excellent wordsmith and your delivery (if it were an audio book) would be powerful. Anyway, I have taken up enough of your time and I know you have precious little of it. I will end my note by saying once again how sorry I am about your loss and that I will keep you and your family in my prayers that memories of good times spent and the passage of time will bring you comfort. Fondly, Diana I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views. If I'm going to share my story, it should be the whole story. The titles are the dates things happened. If you have any interest in who I really am please start at the beginning of this playlist: http://savethecats.org/ I know there will be people who take things out of context and try to use them to validate their own misconception, but you have access to the whole story. My hope is that others will recognize themselves in my words and have the strength to do what is right for themselves and our shared planet. Today's episode is chock-full of adventures from the life of touring musicians. Oteil and Mike are joined by guitarist, producer, and fellow podcaster Eric Krasno. Eric has been a fixture in popular music for decades, and his musical talent and breadth of knowledge is nearly unparalleled. The three discuss the power of discovering certain music at the exact right moment in your life, with Eric sharing his “late” discovery of Bob Dylan. Eric and Oteil trade stories from the road, from embracing being underprepared for gigs and learning on the fly, to reminiscing on the greats they've shared stages with and the superpowers they wield. They also discuss the challenge of learning the full Grateful Dead catalogue and its many iterations, and share some of their missteps along the way. For nearly two decades, Eric Krasno has been an omnipresent figure in popular music. We've heard his virtuosic, innovative guitar playing with Soulive and Lettuce (both of which he co-founded), seen him onstage supporting the likes of the Rolling Stones, Dave Mathews Band, John Mayer and The Roots, watched him take home multiple GRAMMY Awards, and benefited from his deft, behind-the-scenes work as a producer and songwriter for everyone from Norah Jones, Tedeschi Trucks, and 50 Cent to Talib Kweli, Aaron Neville, and Allen Stone. Krasno's recent solo album, 'Blood From A Stone,' reveals a previously unknown and utterly compelling side of his artistry, though, inviting us to bear witness as he both literally and metaphorically finds his voice. Joe Kelley Radio interviews NYC guitarist Eric Krasno. Krasno's recent solo album, 'Blood From A Stone,' reveals a previously unknown and utterly compelling side of his artistry, though, inviting us to bear witness as he both literally and metaphorically finds his voice. www.erickrasno.com www.soulive.com www.joekelleyradio.com Episode originally aired August 28th 2020

How does a self-proclaimed introvert and a Dave Mathews Band groupie, who has followed them around the country and to Mexico, parlay her experience into her business? The lessons are here, but for some may be different than for others. 2:30 - 18yo chance to go to Dave Mathews Band (was a rap fan prior); environment and sense of community sold her on the band. 5:00 - doesn’t understand why people could be negative about something that gives joy to others in reference to Dave Mathews shows and why some people do not like the band. 8:00 - “Dave Days” are a community, an event. Goes to see him in Mexico every year. Lent a person unknown to her $100 for a flight there. 11:00 - believes this and other bands popularity comes from a sense of humility, and creates a sense of community, makes the audience feel like they are there with the band, and are connected with the band. Band transcends the music. 16:25 - no one show stands out, enjoys them, music/songs are not repeated, so every experience is different. Most memorable was Deer Creek, Indiana. Paid for campground that ended up being someone’s backyard. A hose was the shower. Found out from a news crew there was a tornado warning. Next day her husband to be ended up breaking his knee pushing their stuck car out of the mud.
