When you purchase an item after clicking a link from this post, we may earn a commission.Devin: What is your superpower?Leslie: Well, I don't think there's one superpower. I think I have a lot of little superpowers that, when you put them all together, they're what people see as a superpower. I have my chaplaincy, am a certified mediator, have traveled and lived out of the country for 13 and a half years, and was a classical dancer and corporate operations strategist. I have all these little things that I have built that are my lived experience and trained experience, and certified experience. That's my superpower because I get to sit in conversations and have had experience with someone there because of a past piece of my life.“We are stuck within our own culture because that's where we are comfortable, and our comfort can sometimes lead to discomfort of others,” says Leslie Short, founder, president and CEO of The Cavu Group, a diversity, equity and inclusion firm that helps clients expand beyond their current culture. She is also the author of Expand Beyond Your Current Culture. At her firm and in her book, she helps businesses build cultures that go beyond ping pong day.She caught me off guard with one part of her message. “I'm going to say to you, ‘Please do not hire any black or brown folks. Please do not bring in anyone with a disability—unless you are ready to build an inclusive and equitable company culture. Otherwise, you're not doing anything.'”Her message is clear. To create an inclusive culture, you must do much more than include a diverse headcount. That work can be challenging. Helping employees see how their words can exclude or offend a colleague with a different lived experience is the essence of the work. The Cavu Group helps companies train employees to demonstrate respect toward their teammates.Leslie says, “I don't live and walk by my color, but it is part of my identity. So, if you do not see it, then that means you don't see a piece of me. You see what you want to see that makes you comfortable.”This is why creating space for all employees to bring their full selves to work is essential. The goal should be an inclusive environment that allows everyone's voice and perspective to be heard, respected, and incorporated into the company culture. It takes careful planning and active engagement from both management and employees alike.Strictly speaking, Leslie notes that this doesn't require empathy, but it does require a level of understanding, hence the value of training. In all her work, Leslie leverages her superpower, which is her unique portfolio of lived, trained and certified experiences. How to Develop Your Portfolio of Experiences As a SuperpowerLeslie says she draws on her portfolio of experiences every single day. “That's how I live my life.”She often coaches people and offers this advice for building your portfolio:I always ask, '“What are your transferable skills?” I'm going to go, “I don't have any.” I go, “You're a mother or a father. So that means you have time management. That means you're a fashion designer because you're pulling out clothes like all of it.”I break it down, honestly, that simple. What do you want in your everyday life? And then what have you done in your work life or your studies? What are the pieces of the transferable skills we can take out to build where you want to go next?Leslie helps people see today as a step toward an ultimate objective.I always ask a client, “What if you could do anything, forget money, forget bills, forget family? What would it be?” Then, “Is that where you really want to go?” And if they say “yes” to whatever that big dream is, then, “Let's start building the road to a bridge to get there. Because whatever you do now will not be the last thing that you do to get there.” So I make it feel much more attainable than that big thing out there.By following Leslie's example and counsel, you can make your portfolio of lived, trained and certified experiences into a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world. To give a quarter and say, go and do this without the context of the bigger picture, that doesn't work for this generation.” - Leslie Short “For the younger generation, you have to understand that you have talent, but you also have a huge talent that hasn't been released yet that maybe needs to be cultivated…” - Leslie Short “Culture… You have to cultivate. That's the expectation of how you expect people to work, how you expect people to show up, how they should be trusted when they show up, how you handle meetings, what your branding, your mission, your values, and your vision is, and how you make that come alive every day.” - Leslie Short “That's why visibility and not transparency are important… That you all are up-to-date on things that are happening.” - Leslie Short “Don't assume that everyone understands the mission. Even though it's printed somewhere, make sure you're clear on the mission, make sure you're clear on the values. Values are very big to this generation.” - Leslie Short “Understand that everyone doesn't work the same way.” - Leslie Short “Be aware of who you're working with, in their strengths and their weaknesses from leadership all the way through…” - Leslie Short “Understanding your strengths and your weaknesses, you have to know what that is in order to be a leader.” - Leslie Short “In order to manage someone else, you have to know what you're good at, and what you're not so good at. And you have to listen, and you have to build trust.” - Leslie Short “You have to build trust, and trust is action. My favorite projects are geographic ethnographies. Figuring out what makes the people on a certain section of the map act the way they do, and the opportunities that presents for a brand. With so much focus on internet culture, it’s intriguing to uncover the nuance of local communities, local attitudes, local preference that still exists. Sometimes. Weirdly, we have been discussing the end of monoculture for about a decade. I wrote about it in Specific. But we also talk about how globalization, and technology eating everything contribute to a certain sameness of thinking or familiarity from place to place. We’ve all got the same global shops, seen the same global content (anyone seen Squid Games?) and eaten at the same chain restaurants. Yet, wherever humans have a little space, you will find variation. Even if we’re all watching a hidden apartment be discovered in real-time on our For You Page, locally, we’re adding our own spin to it. “Locally” may mean geographically or may exist in our group chat. We are receiving more shared stimuli, but still processing them in different ways, yielding distinct responses. Identifying those processes and their potential outcomes is what makes communications strategy fun. Leslie Short does similar research in workplaces. She studies workplace dynamics and to identify how diversity, equity and inclusion can be better woven in–sometimes in places where it has never been considered. Her approach is practical, pragmatic. I was fortunate to speak with her and learn more about the questions she asks, and how she addresses some of the biggest challenges in this space. My guest, Leslie Short, believes the answer lies in the concept of culture and not necessarily segmentation. Ring a bell? In my last days in integrated marketing, I was applying the same principal (inclusion marketing). Leslie is now applying it to people resources in organizations. My conversation with Leslie Short Founder of The Cavu Group couldn't have been more timely, as themes from my latest message to DE&I decision makers in North Texas recently at the #DCEODiversity Equity & Inclusion Symposium.Leslie and I talk about what it means to decode and deprogram DEI, and we go deep on topics that will help disseminate the values and culture of real change throughout organizations everywhere— if only leaders are willing to look at the whole person and do the real work. You will also hear Leslie's amazing story, from international ballet dancer, to brand marketing agency founder, to the mastermind behind the @FUBU and Shark Tank's Daymond Johns' brands, to her founding of The Cavu Group a DEI consultancy. Put up your dukes, too—she is also a feather-weight boxer!

On the Did you know Segment… Black Inventors…according to history.com The Electret Microphone, was Co-Invented by James E. West in 1964. Even for those who aren't quick to pick up the mic during karaoke, microphones are used every day to communicate over distances far and wide. And more than 90 percent of the microphones used today, including the microphones used in phones and cameras, use a microphone co-invented by a Black man. Dr. James E. West was tasked with creating a more sensitive and compact microphone while working at Bell Labs in 1960. Only four years later, the new microphone was in wide production and was being used in hearing aids, tape recorders, most telephones and baby monitors. On this episode of Active Allyship…it's more than a #hashtag! Most definitely a woman of influence - Leslie's parents taught her that she could be whatever she wanted to be! She was introduced to amazing opportunities through her classical ballet journey, not even realizing at such a tender age how this would be pivotal in preparing her for the world adventures ahead.Early in the conversation, Ms. Short, expanded upon her thoughts around the two words 1) Diversity and 2) Inclusion. You'll already know that you'll have to listen to get the deets on this distinction! BTW, Ms. Short is working on a workshop to show you how to have a valid voice - understanding that when you speak, the audience has no option, but to listen.Inequities, what the hey?! Join The Village Collective and Leslie Short as we embark on our next topic of discussion: Where will you spend your money when we come out on the other side of the pandemic? Will it matter how the companies treated their employees? Here are a few questions to digest: 1.Does it matter that the company's values don't add up to their actions? 2.Do you separate leadership from company or brand name? 3.Is there a leader or company you felt rose up and demonstrated what leadership should look like? 4. How will you go back to work if your company didn't rise to the pandemic the way you hoped? --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
