Can Critics Create a Standard of Taste? - A Conversation with Kathrin Heinrich

This podcast episode explores the role of art criticism, especially the question whether critics can establish a standard for determining what constitutes beauty in art. For this episode, I took inspiration from my thesis where I assessed three thinkers who offer contrasting perspectives on this matter: David Hume, Pierre Bourdieu, and Alexander Nehamas.Hume, in his work Of The Standard of Taste, suggests that although aesthetic judgments are subjective, they can be assessed by competent critics. This is not to say that there is an objective standard for beauty, but that judgements made by those possessing certain qualities that make for a good critic hold more weight. Pierre Bourdieu, in his work Distinction, contends that taste is shaped by social factors, such as cultural upbringing and class distinctions, thereby challenging the notion of such a standard and arguing instead that taste is a marker of social class that perpetuates already existing hierarchies. In order to show that elitism and social power is not all there is to art criticism, I introduced Alexander Nehamas' ideas from his book, Only a Promise of Happiness, presenting a view of critics who, instead of imposing a standard, are encouraging us to engage with artworks on a personal level, inducing a diversity of interpretations and evaluations. In this podcast episode, I will take these thinkers as my inspiration for interviewing Katrin Heinrich, an art historian and critic based in Vienna. She studied art history and comparative literature at the University of Vienna, and currently she works in research support at the University of Music and Performing Arts. Kathrin is also a doctoral candidate at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, where she was on a scientific staff from 2020 to 2022, has taught courses and co-organized a research project called Addressing Amnesia, Performing Trauma. Her writing has been published in newspapers and magazines like Der Standard, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Frieze, Texte zur Kunst, Springerin, Eikon and PW Magazine. In 2018, she was awarded the AICA Austria Prize for Young Art Criticism. (music for intro and outro is by Lili Kátai, playing an improvised version of Debussy's Arabesque L. 66 No. 1 in E Major on piano)Special thanks to Thomas Aichinger and Cathy Mason.

5.13b 'Shifting Perspectives' Writing Prompt for my Conversation with LiLi K Bright

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 19, 2023 5:12

Welcome to your writing prompt for my conversation with LiLi K Bright and the final epsiode of series 5.  This one isn't so much of a writing prompt specifically as it is an invitation to do something different in your creative practice (as the title suggests!).  LiLi talked about the inspiration they gain from attending ecology and naturalist talks and events as well as joining writers hours and social events.  I was hugely inspired by this as something of which I don't do nearly enough is attending events and courses which will shift my focus in unexpected ways and help me to engage with like-minded folk.   Since my chat with LiLi, I've signed up for some free and paid events in the coming months that I hope will both inform and enrich my writing, providing different perspectives - both scientific and artistic - that will allow me to go deeper into my understanding of the mechanisms of nature and where they intersect with a range of diverse creative forms.  I think when you've been teaching and creating and holding space for people for as long as I have, it's really easy to become quite isolated.  This hasn't been intentional but I've always been very ‘do it myself' even when I don't have to be; sometimes this can be a good thing and sometimes it can work out to my detriment.   So for you then, think about how you might want to diversify and expand your creative practice, or gain insights into areas you've always wondered about.  There are lots of free and low cost events out there now as well as paid for courses.  I've popped a couple of resources below and on the episode page of the website if you want to have an explore. So that's it for series 5!  I told myself I'd stop for this series after 13 episodes and I think you'll agree, we've ended on a high!  I'll be back in a few short weeks after I've had a bit of a break to tend to my writing and facilitating.  If you're interested in attending any of my future events - online or in-person - just pop through to the events page on my website www.promptedbynature.co.uk  Otherwise you can always find me on my Substack (where I've been really enjoying posting my weekly prompts and getting to know a few of you a bit better!) promptedbynature.substack.com and Instagram @prompted.by.nature.  All links can be found in the show notes and on the episode page on the website. In the meantime, please do reach out if you have any insights from any of these episodes and conversations or if you use any of the prompts and want to share how it went.   Happy writing, happy creating and I'll speak to you very soon.  Helen x Free course platforms: https://www.mooc.org/ https://www.edx.org/ https://www.conservationtraining.org/ https://www.open.edu/openlearn/nature-environment/free-courses Also look into your local conservation charity if you're looking for nature-related courses. Listening back to this episode was like a dream, both because my post-covid brain was real (sorry for the rambling) and also because this week's guest is A DREAM! I am delighted to welcome to the pod writer, artist, amazingly talented comedian, and self-proclaimed nature nerd, LiLi K. Bright! LiLi and I met through London Writers' Salon. The first time I got to meet them (as opposed to being in a giant zoom room wondering who this cool person was but being unable to ask on account of security settings telling us to be on mute and write), we got put into a breakout room together. LiLi broke the (albeit very loose rules) and presented us with a drawing instead of written work in response to the prompt. HELLO! Yes, you are as cool as I imagined, and maybe even cooler!   In this episode, we get a little science-y (the parts that LiLi is into like botany), we get excited about our mutual obsession with butterflies and I learn how LiLi came out leading a lunch and learn they were asked to present at work on non-binary people, without their cis boss realising they were non-binary themselves. A little bit awkward? For the boss maybe. An opportunity to be a legend? I will answer for LiLi and say heck yeah.   LiLi shares coming out in several aspects of their life. They continue to come out as non-binary and bisexual, but find that it also comes up in their intersectionalities in regards to being Black, in neurodivergence, and in mental health.   Are you CIS and straight? Why should you care about this podcast? We will tell you why! Because people are interesting and important! Because why wouldn't you? Enjoy!   In this episode: - LiLi wants you to know that Queer always fits. It is so broad, that is why they like it! - We tell ourselves that we are valid and great and cool! AND YES YOU ARE! -It is discussed that finding community is beautiful and important and LiLi wants you to know! They also want to remind you that there are often barriers, so think about what people need to feel welcome in your communities! - We ponder “What is the frame of reference?” when it comes to talking about gender and sexuality with cis, straight people! - I learn that it is NEVER TOO LATE to get into fan fiction! - It's revealed (SPOILER!) that on TV, there is often the token Queer person in the friend group. But did you know (speaking to the cishets) that most Queer people surround themselves with other Queer people? -LiLi talks about Afrofuturism, and it is fascinating and beautiful and very cool!   RESOURCES - Follow LiLi on Instagram! @cherrytree_walk - Follow LiLi on Twitter! @cherrytree_walk - Visit LiLi's website to book your free intro session for compassionate coaching with LiLi, for nature writing workshops, climate science workshops, and other upcoming events both outdoors and online cherrytreewalk.com

Lili K's new EP "Songs With Friends," is what happens when an artist sheds the weight of the world and just makes music because it's fun. But she has not sacrificed quality in the process - collaborations with Chicago favorites The O'My's and Air Credits, as well as her Milwaukee friends and musicians Klassik, B-Free and Evan Lane, make this collection sound just a good as it must have felt to make it. Jill Hopkins spoke with Chicago Jazz singer about the therapeutic and invigorating process of making music just for the love of it. In the process, Lili was able to re-discover self-love, self-care and joy of creating that she was lacking in the last several years. The EP comes ahead of her forthcoming full-length "Planet of Flowers" due later this year. When you're first introduced to the soulful and artistic sound of *B~Free*, it is but a mere taste of all that this young lady is capable of. From the pureness of her voice to the depth of her lyrics, there is no doubt that the 24 year old singer, songwriter, producer and musician is sure to leave her mark on music scenes throughout the Midwest and beyond. Born in Chicago and raised in Milwaukee the inheritance of a musical family lead her to discover her love for the art form by the age of 2. She began singing and playing piano in her early years and has been writing and composing music since the age of 13. She majored in music throughout high school and college and has been thoroughly trained in a multitude of genres including jazz and classical flute, voice and piano. Since then, she has been able to hone her craft and develop a multifaceted sound. Now armed with a B.A. in Music Performance and working towards a Masters in Music Education, her main purpose is to share her gift with the world. Lili K. (@LiliKjazz) is the charismatic 20 year old songstress whose name is quickly popping up in different circles around the Midwest. Her infectious smile is nothing compared to the reaction that people have upon hearing her sing. Her smooth and sultry sound is countered well by her quirky and energetic live performances with her band, The Secret Garden. She began performing in her early years through church and elementary school choirs and started writing original music at the age of ten. Since then, she has built quite a repertoire of an original jazz/ neo-soul/ electronic-hip hop sound. Growing up in an artistic household in the inner city of Milwaukee, Lili learned to channel her emotions and combine her influences to create her individual sound. She graduated from Milwaukee High School of the Arts where she was trained in classical, opera, and jazz voice, as well as music theory, and is currently a Junior at Columbia College Chicago, majoring in music business. Miss K. has performed at numerous events, including Summerfest and CMJ, and has performed alongside acts like Dwele, The Cool Kids, and Peter Hadar, etc. at reputable venues in the Midwest including The Metro and The Double Door. On July 1st, 2011, Lili released her first project, a four song EP entitled 'A Prelude To Hello,' with composer Peter Cottontale. The EP has gotten outstanding reviews from prominent online media outlets such as Ruby Hornet, Art Nouveau Mag, Soul Bounce, etc. She's a fresh face to the game with a modernly vintage sound; there is much more to come from this young soul singer.
