This week on This Can't Be Real with Brad, humanity once again proves we are absolutely not ready for adulthood. Brad breaks down the story of a man who trusted his GPS so much that he drove his car straight into a lake while his wife sat there questioning every life decision that led to that moment. Then things get even messier when a wedding reception turns into full-on WrestleMania after an argument escalates into flying cake, screaming relatives, and Uncle Randy apparently wearing buttercream like a crown. And finally, Brad reacts to a criminal mastermind who successfully broke into a store… only to accidentally lock himself inside and basically turn his robbery into an overnight stay next to the beef jerky aisle.Along the way, Brad rants about Apple Maps, old-school paper maps, drunk wedding uncles, Scooby-Doo villains, and why technology should never completely replace common sense. In the end, the “most bonkers” award goes to the GPS guy — because trusting a screen over literal water is next-level terrifying.

Just one day from Opening Day, we discuss the Netflix broadcast and next season's impending lockout before Jerry updates the Yankees rotation and Carson Benge's start for the Mets. Gio wonders about Houston's spring break appeal, a Texas Rangers rookie makes the roster during a mound visit, and Jerry goes around the NBA. Plus, Mika Zibanejad's 1,000th NHL game, and we conclude with the news of a professional cornhole player facing murder charges.

We speak with the New York Taxi Workers Alliance about the largest current campaign Uber and Lyft drivers launched against the rideshare companies, which are locking drivers out of the apps for extended periods by taking advantage of a legal loophole.
Chapter 3: Collective Bargaining and Labor Relations Purpose: This chapter examines the labor law framework as it applies to sports, focusing on the collective bargaining process and the labor-management relationship in professional leagues. Key Topics: The National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) and Its Application in Sports: The NLRA provides the foundation for collective bargaining in the U.S. by guaranteeing employees the right to organize and negotiate over wages, hours, and working conditions. In sports, athletes are considered employees, and player unions represent them in negotiations with league owners. The act's application ensures that athletes have a voice in labor matters, enabling them to negotiate for better working conditions and compensation. Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs) in Major Professional Leagues: CBAs are at the heart of labor relations in professional sports. These agreements, negotiated between player unions and league owners, outline the terms under which leagues operate, including salary caps, revenue sharing, health benefits, and rules on free agency. CBAs are crucial in maintaining labor peace within leagues and preventing strikes or lockouts, which can be detrimental to the sports industry. Player Unions and Their Role in Negotiations: Player unions, such as the NFL Players Association (NFLPA) and the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA), play a vital role in representing athletes during collective bargaining negotiations. These unions fight for better pay, improved safety standards, and other benefits for their members. They also provide legal representation in disputes between players and teams or leagues. Strikes, Lockouts, and Labor Disputes in Sports: Labor disputes in sports often result in strikes (when players refuse to play) or lockouts (when owners prevent players from working). These disputes can stem from disagreements over contract terms, salary caps, or revenue sharing. Notable examples include the 1994 MLB strike and the 2011 NFL lockout, both of which had significant impacts on their respective sports. Legal Considerations in Collective Bargaining and Labor Relations: Legal challenges in collective bargaining often involve complex negotiations over wages, health care, and working conditions. Both players and management must navigate labor laws and ensure compliance with federal regulations like the NLRA. Disputes may be resolved through arbitration or litigation, and the legal strategies employed by both sides can have long-lasting effects on the sports industry. Summary: This chapter delves into the intricate labor-management relationship in professional sports, focusing on the collective bargaining process that governs the interaction between leagues and players. Through an examination of the role of unions, key labor laws, and the history of labor disputes, readers will gain an understanding of how labor relations are uniquely structured in the sports world and the legal frameworks that support them. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/law-school/support
First we have an update on an old startup as Worldcoin changes its name to World and redesigns its Orb to be more than just an eyeball scanner but also now an identification service called Deep Face. Repeat the satanic mantra after me: World, Orb, Deep Face. We then sit back as Prof Ed walks us through an in-depth investigation into how Uber and Lyft used driver lockouts—preventing them from logging on, seemingly at random and for long periods—as a cynical response to minimum pay laws in New York City. This regulatory arbitrage and brutal optimization resulted in significant impacts on drivers and major savings for the companies. ••• Sam Altman's Worldcoin Gets a New Name, and New Hardware https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-10-17/sam-altman-s-worldcoin-gets-a-new-name-and-new-hardware ••• How Uber and Lyft Used a Loophole to Deny NYC Drivers Millions in Pay https://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/2024-uber-lyft-nyc-drivers-pay-lockouts/?srnd=phx-technology Subscribe to hear more analysis and commentary in our premium episodes every week! https://www.patreon.com/thismachinekills Hosted by Jathan Sadowski (www.x.com/jathansadowski) and Edward Ongweso Jr. (www.x.com/bigblackjacobin). Fort William went off with a bang, providing one of the most thrilling and engaging season openers we've seen. With plenty of topics to hit, like speed suits, electronic suspension lockouts, and Dakotah's mega-rise bars, it was awesome to have the crew back together to chat about elite downhill racing. Sports fans need to start realizing a growing number of professional sports athletes and team owners could really care less about their fans. From overpriced game tickets and concessions to high parking fees, professional sports figures and owners simply have no concern that many middle-income families can no longer afford to attend a game. These people care about only one thing and that is greed. Make no mistake. The recent Major League Baseball lockout between the owners and players was about one thing and that is money. With the average player making over 500k per year, these people need to understand they are already in the top 1% of household incomes in America. Moreover, both owners and players fail to recognize who really provides their income while they fight over how many more millions of dollars they can either earn or keep. Although lucrative television and broadcasting deals provide a lot of revenue for professional athletes and team owners, the fans are the real employer. Without people watching there would not be millions to fight over. The only people that really get hurt in professional sports strikes or lockouts are the fans, day-to-day team lower-level support staff, and small business owners that depend on game day. Maybe it's time fans remind the privileged professional athletes and team owners who provides their paychecks and go on strike themselves. Maybe it's time to lock out professional sports and no longer be a fan or viewer. This podcast episode talks about the recent MLB lockout and how most fans of professional sports should probably be thinking about a lockout of their own. For over a year, governments throughout the world have mercilessly locked down their citizens in a failed attempt to control Covid-19. The worst part is that most knew these measures were ineffective at best and damaging to people's mental health and financial condition at worst. We were placed in a Masquerade of fear and deception that will be reinvented from virus to climate in the years to come.
