Whether it's smoking cigarettes or mindlessly buying things on Amazon, breaking bad habits can be incredibly difficult. Judson Brewer, MD, Ph.D. or “Dr. Jud” is a New York Times best-selling author and thought leader in the field of habit change and the “science of self-mastery,” who blends over 20 years of experience with mindfulness training and a career in scientific research. He is passionate about understanding how our brains work, and how to use that knowledge to help people make deep, permanent change in their lives — with the goal of reducing suffering in the world at large. He is also the director of research and innovation at Brown University's Mindfulness Center, where he also serves as an associate professor in Behavioral and Social Sciences at the School of Public Health and Psychiatry at the School of Medicine at Brown University. Judson's published works include “The Craving Mind: From Cigarettes to Smartphones to Love, Why We Get Hooked and How We Can Break Bad Habits” and the best-seller, “Unwinding Anxiety: New Science Shows How to Break the Cycles of Worry and Fear to Heal Your Mind.”Judson is both an academic and an entrepreneur. And in this episode we dive into his many projects including his app based behavior change programs, how our brains reward system works, interest, curiosity and prioritizing all of the addictions available to us in modern society.Episode Quotes:On addiction & quittingThe process is the same, whether it's food or social media, the process is the same. If we can see and really see what we're getting from it, then we can learn to consume in moderation without forcing ourselves to like lock our phones in our trunk when we're driving. Or go through these really extreme behavioral ways to kind of force ourselves not to do things. We don't have to do that. It really comes back to like how can we just leverage the power of our minds, which is super powerful.Body vs. brainSo think of it this way. Our feeling body is much stronger than our thinking brain. So we can think something's bad for me, but that's not gonna help.Interest curiosityThat craving, we can go, oh no, I have to have a cigarette. Or we can flip that with interest curiosity and go, oh, what does this craving feel like right now in my body? And so here we go to the source, like, what is it that's driving me to do this? Like good habits, bad habits also give you a dopamine hit. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that is often called the feel-good hormone. Dopamine fires when you get the thing you crave, and when you anticipate getting that thing. A dopamine hit is not the same as true happiness, say Dr. Jud Brewer, director of research and innovation at Brown University Mindfulness Center, a psychiatrist and an expert in mindfulness training for treating addictions. To break everyday addictions and bad habits, he recommends you step out of the reactive pattern and just be present with whatever comes up. Use your natural curiosity to learn about the habit loop while you're in it and become aware of the results of your actions. There are 4 laws of behavior change, says author, speaker and entrepreneur James Clear. If you want to build a habit, you make it Visible, Attractive, Easy and Satisfying. If you want to stop a habit, you invert the laws. You make it Invisible, Unattractive, Difficult and Unsatisfying. You might think you have to replace the habit with another to break it. But this is really a last resort. You can untangle the bad habit if you stay mindful, get curious, and invert the 4 laws of behavior change. "Learn how your mind works, so you can work with it." – Dr. Jud Brewer"You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems." – James Clear Resources Cited: Jud Brewer - The Craving Mind: From Cigarettes to Smartphones to Love - Why We Get Hooked and How We Can Break Bad Habits James Clear - Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones Music by:Sebastian Brian MehrHere's to breaking bad habits,Dyan WilliamsCheck out the book: The Incrementalist, A Simple Productivity System to Create Big Results in Small StepsVisit website: www.dyanwilliams.comSubscribe to productivity e-newsletter

We all have bad habits that we struggle with, from unhealthy eating to smoking. Today’s podcast examines how to break a bad habit with psychiatrist and addiction expert, Dr. Judson Brewer. Judson Alyn Brewer, M.D., Ph.D. had devoted his career to the mechanisms of habit, and his discoveries have been life changing for many people. His Youtube video “A Simple Way To Break A Bad Habit” has over 8 million views. He has published numerous articles, and his work has been featured on 60 Minutes, CNN, NPR, and in multiple magazines. As director of research at the Center of Mindfulness, Dr. Brewer has developed mindfulness programs for the treatment of addictions. He is also an author and wrote a book called “The Craving Mind: From Cigarettes to Smartphones to Love - Why We Get Hooked and How We Can Break Bad Habits.” What we learn today is that the key to breaking bad habits is not white-knuckled willpower, but with mindfulness. And Dr. Brewer shares the steps you can take to implement mindfulness into your daily life. I hope this podcast can help you break a bad habit. In addition, I made a big announcement in today’s podcast. My new book, “The Easy 5-Ingredient Cookbook” is now available for preorder on Amazon. When I was presented with the challenge of developing 100 plant-based recipes with only five ingredients, at first, I was hesitant. But then I realized that one of the most common barriers to eating plant-based foods was the learning curve and the time it took to cook. And I wanted to share my knowledge and everything I have learned to help make things easy and delicious for you. Please preorder on Amazon today because pre-sales matter. When you preorder a book, it's a clear message to Amazon that there is a demand for my book, and it will show up more readily in Amazon search. As always, thank you for your support, kindness and for listening. Judson Brewer, author of The Craving Mind: From Cigarettes to Smartphones to Love - Why We Get Hooked, & How We Can Break Bad Habits - kept his meditation practice and medical career separate for a decade. Luckily for us, it eventually dawned on him to inform his research and clinical practice with the 2500-year-old insights of Buddhism. As he dove deep into the dynamics of addiction, he noticed that the primary western model for understanding human learning - BF Skinner's operant conditioning - was simply another way of describing the Buddhist concept of dependent generation. That is, humans, like all organisms, survived because they learned to associate certain triggers with behaviors that produced a reward that conveyed survival benefit.

Dr. Judson Brewer is someone who has dedicated his career to uncovering the benefits of paying attention, or what is typically known as mindfulness. He is the Director of Research at the Center for Mindfulness and an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Medicine at the University of Massachusetts School of Medicine. In his new book, "The Craving Mind: From Cigarettes to Smartphones to Love – Why We Get Hooked and How We Can Break Bad Habits," he unpacks the science behind the many different kinds of addiction and how we can conquer them. He is an important voice in the relatively young field of mindfulness research because he makes it accessible to all of us, not just those who “meditate.” Mindfulness isn’t one more thing we have to mindful of; rather, If we can stay curious, we can stay mindful. And when we are mindful, we can then remain more present to our one and only precious life.
It's never happened before that a guest has been daring enough to return to the mic for a second round conversation with Pete and Jay, but Judson Brewer was up for giving it another go. And how lucky for the audience because Judson talks through all the ideas in his new book The Craving Mind: From Cigarettes to Smartphones to Love – Why We Get Hooked and How We Can Break Bad Habits and more, offering perspective on "flow," the idea of a true self, resistance versus resilience, and well, the state of our brains during this unusual political moment. It's not everyday that you find an MD/PhD who gains as much insight from talking about 2,000-year-old Buddhist philosophy as he does from the latest findings in the New England Journal of Medicine. Judson Brewer is director of research in the Center for Mindfulness at the University Massachusetts Medical School, and holds affiliations at the Yale University School of Medicine and MIT's Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences. He also really likes to sit in meditation because, well, it once changed his life. As a young student overwhelmed with figuring out his future, Judson saw firsthand how mindfulness could improve health issues related to stress—as well as the angst of a difficult breakup. With this in mind, he has dedicated his career to helping others transform their lives—especially those riddled with addiction. In his forthcoming book, The Craving Mind: From Cigarettes to Smartphones to Love—Why We Get Hooked and How We Can Break Bad Habits, Judson outlines the reasons behind the decisions we make and how we can literally rethink our behavior. It's a highly relatable expansion of his famous TED Talk, which has garnered almost six million views, and complements two very helpful apps he has developed—Craving to Quit and Eat Right Now. Take a listen to Judson's accessible ideas and be prepared to re-imagine, for good reason, many of your own patterns and habits.
