In this episode, we're talking about a whole school approach to wellbeing. Our guest is Dr Alexandra Hennessey, from the Manchester Institute of Education at the University of Manchester in the UK. Dr Hennessey and colleagues have explored how different schools in the UK have adopted the Well Schools framework – now, that's a project started by the Youth Sport Trust in 2020. The findings of the study have been published in the journal Frontiers in Education (Hennessey et al., 2025). The team has also published 2 short reads – some school case studies on how the 10 schools are supporting wellbeing in their community, which runs through things like intent, implementation and impact; and then there's a Well Schools Final Report Executive Summary as well (Hennessey et al., 2023). You can find links to all those documents in the transcript of this podcast over at Teacher magazine. Our chat with Dr Hennessey includes how wellbeing and learning go hand-in-hand, and we're going to focus on 2 aspects of the study in particular – the role of teacher wellbeing and, of course, the importance of that whole school approach. She also mentions at one stage INSET, and that in the UK, is staff PD, essentially, where the staff get in-service training and the pupils don't attend on that day. Paul Scott in print studio with cut Wild Rose detail Paul Scott (b. 1953, United Kingdom) is a UK-based artist, living and working in Cumbria, with a diverse practice and an international reputation. Creating individual pieces that blur the boundaries between fine art, craft, and design, he is well known for his research into printed vitreous surfaces, as well as his characteristic blue-and-white artworks in glazed ceramic. Scott's artworks can be found in public collections around the globe, including the National Museum, Norway; the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, UK; National Museums Liverpool; the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, PA; and the Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, NY. Commissioned work can be found in a number of UK museums, as well as in public places in the north of England, including Carlisle, Maryport, Gateshead, and Newcastle upon Tyne. He has also completed large-scale works in Hanoi, Vietnam, and at the Guldagergård public sculpture park in Denmark. A combination of rigorous research, studio practice, curation, writing, and commissioned work ensures that his practice continues to develop. His work is fundamentally concerned with the reanimation of familiar objects, landscape, pattern, and a sense of place. He was professor of ceramics at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts (KHiO) from 2011–2018. Scott received his Bachelor of Art Education and Design from Saint Martin's College and his PhD from the Manchester Institute for Research and Innovation in Art and Design in England. This week's show is with Rod Boothroyd. Rod brings more than two decades' experience of working with men and women to his current work as a Healing The Shadow practitioner. Rod's career in the area of human potential started with his training in Transactional Analysis psychotherapy at the Manchester Institute for Psychotherapy in 1999. Since then he has taken further training in Integrative Psychotherapy, worked with the ManKind Project UK and Ireland (where he was a Primary Integration Training leader), and researched in depth the art of working with, and reintegrating, the human shadow. He is now working as a one-to-one coach and therapist, and is also a supervisor with Healing The Shadow, an organisation devoted to emotional healing and the development of human potential. In this episode, Lian and Rod delve into the concept of the 'sovereign within' and its transformative implications for leadership, personal growth, and soul awakening. They explore the essence of heart-centred leadership - including the importance of compassion and self-love, they share insights into the archetypes of inflated and deflated sovereigns - highlighting their manifestations in everyday life and the deeper insecurities they conceal, reflect on the pivotal role of purpose in anchoring a strong sense of self, and talk about the dynamics of childhood experiences and how these early influences sculpt our ability to and our path of embodying sovereignty. We'd love to know what YOU think about this week's show. Let's carry on the conversation… please leave a comment wherever you are listening or in any of our other spaces to engage. What you'll learn from this episode: Heart-centred leadership begins with awareness and self-compassion - We need to see and nurture the inner child and the growing sovereign within. Recognising shadow archetypes deepens self-awareness - Inflated sovereigns, driven by insecurities, and deflated sovereigns, hindered by self-worth struggles, offer powerful insights into our behaviours and relationships. Purpose and self-love are the cornerstones of sovereignty - by embracing self-acceptance and aligning with purpose, we create a foundation for self-discovery and leadership that can transform not only our own lives but those around us. Looking Outside comes to you LIVE from the Dubai Future Forum, the largest gathering of futurists in the world. In this conversation we talk about sustainable design with Arup's Director of Foresight, Josef Hargrave. Arup is focused on creating more sustainable built environments, and Josef speaks to how designing for the future needs to be anchored in decisions for the present, by understanding deeply the structural limitations and infrastructure of today. Josef details several projects he's run for designing out to 2050 across geographies exploring building for cities, having worked in and with over 30 cities around the world. He boils success down to context: it's easy to identify what is changing in the world, but the effort should be in what it means to the project and stakeholders holding the brief. Contextualizing the environment you're designing for will influence how you design for the future and the future populations living in this infrastructure. Jo and Josef also discuss how foresight done well should ultimately be about making yourself useful to the organization that you're a part of. As the company evolves over time, as Arup has in the 13 years Josef has been there, the application of foresight needs to evolve with it. --If Josef was not a futurist, he would be an artist or designer. Today's podcast is with Chris Bramah and JB Morin. Chris is a consultant Physiotherapist and Researcher at the Manchester Institute of Health & Performance, specializing in biomechanics for injury prevention, especially in running-related concerns like hamstring strains. With over a decade in elite sports and a Ph.D. in biomechanics, he collaborates with World and Olympic Medallists, providing consultancy services focused on sprint running mechanics and their connection to hamstring strain injuries for clients. JB Morin, a full professor and head of sports science at the University of Saint-Etienne, brings over 15 years of research experience. Having published 50 peer-reviewed journals since 2004, he is a world-leading researcher in sprint-related topics, collaborating with top sprinters like Christophe Lemaitre. As a two-time previous podcast guest, JB shares valuable insights applicable to team sports, including his expertise in force-velocity profiling and heavy sled training. Sprinting and sports injuries are complex. Hamstring injuries are common, yet there is not one “unicorn” of a risk factor that determines whether or not an athlete will sustain one. As the roadmap of injury risk is continually unfolding, understanding what is happening from the coaching practices and observations, sports science, and research lenses can all work together to improve our global understanding of building fast and robust athletes. On the episode today, Chris and JB go into various running factors that play into robust sport running performance. These range from force-velocity profiling elements to kinematics and sprint technique, and rotational-based factors. This was a podcast that really digs into the sprint injury equation on a detailed and informative level. Today's episode is brought to you by Lost Empire Herbs, TeamBuildr and the Plyomat.
