How the Media Covers the Military with Todd South

We have ongoing conversations here about fitness in the military, disability policies, changes to testing, and so much more. Because many of these are hot topics, they often attract media coverage, which can have both positive and negative consequences. To help shed some light on the complex relationship between the media and the military, especially with regard to health and fitness issues, we brought in an expert for this episode. Todd South is Editor-at-large for Military Times, which publishes Air Force Times, Army Times, Marine Corps Times, and Navy Times. Todd has written about crime, courts, government and the military for multiple publications since 2004 and was named a 2014 Pulitzer finalist for a co-written project on witness intimidation. Todd served as a Marine in the Iraq War, and some of his favorite topics include marksmanship and fitness. As a special bonus, stay tuned until the end of the episode to get some pro tips on how to put together Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests from someone who has extensive experience doing them. Todd makes several references throughout the episode to places you can go to learn more about journalism, here are the links if you want to go check them out: The Braindead Megaphone: the titular essay from this collection by George Saunders presages some of the modern social media problems with which we're all now grappling. All I know is What I Read in the Papers (explains what the public gets wrong about reporters and how they do their work in a very funny way). This essay is available either as a Kindle single or in the essay collection titled “Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs.” The News: A User's Manual which Todd describes as being how news should be viewed, read and frankly, produced. Many of the sentiments expressed had rattle around his head starting with his first bylines in 2004. He wishes all creators and consumers of news media would read it. Intimate Journalism: The Art and Craft of Reporting Everyday Life, which he describes as simply a classic that should be studied more by journalists at every level.

Episode 101 is in the books- and I decided at the last minute not to sing Rendezvous With Destiny (sorry). We start with a US Foreign Military Sale to the UK for Javelin Missile Systems and then continue with the UK for a nice story about 216 (Para) Signal Squadron transmitting data from Belize to Colchester, UK (16 Air Assault BCT HQ) via ATAK.We also have a series of acquisition stories about Japan & Tomahawks; Finland and the great NLAW; Poland and IFVs; and finally- a potential development of manufacturing precision guided munitions in Australia (in concert with US Industry). Finally- we close out with two great stories: One from Defense News (Jen Judson) that gives us the latest in the US Army's Future Tactical Unmanned Aircraft System Program; & an interesting and perhaps controversial story from the Marine Corps Times about USMC Scout Sniper reorganization.

This episode of Veteran Et Cetera examines the US Marine Corps' 18 month study conducted by the University of Pittsburgh in 2020.  The media has been presenting the study with myths that have caused political division in the military with fears of a "wokeism" in the military.  There was a 2015 study sponsored by the US Dep of Defense but riddled with many scholars claiming that it was biased. The study was never signed off by Military top leadership. It was not dated, etc.  The 2020 study has more reputable scholars tied to an evidence-based , peer-reviewed research study to understand the challenges and the present state of gender integration for US Marine Boot Camp.  The Marine Corps due to legislation must integrate boot camp by 2025.  Your host Mike Kim goes beyond Marine Corps Times and New York Post headlines. Links:https://nypost.com/2022/12/22/marines-may-ban-sir-and-maam-to-avoid-misgendering/https://www.marinecorpstimes.com/news/your-marine-corps/2022/12/20/why-the-marine-corps-may-nix-gender-identifiers-for-drill-instructors/https://www.pitt.edu/pittwire/accolades-honors/pitt-researchers-to-study-gender-integrated-recruit-training-military-settingsFollow Mike on his LinkedIn pageFollow Mike on Instagram @mikekimveteranSearch for Mike on Facebook @MikeKimVeteranSearch for Mike at #mikekimveteran or Google him at "Mike Kim Veteran"Email Mike at agathoskim@gmail.comFollow us on our socialsYouTube @cominghomewellbehindtheservice Instagram @cominghomewell_bts Facebook at Coming Home Well LinkedIn at Coming Home Well Twitter @ComingHomeWell

He'll discuss some of the hottest topics in the IT industry. Sightline Media Group is the leading news organization covering military, defense, public sector, federal technology, C4ISR, and cyber defense. Today, Mike unpacks some of the biggest trending topics in government technology. We also get his perspective on the DoDs advancement in technology. Mike, I love having you on the show because you have such a broad knowledge. You really have your finger on the pulse of what's happening in the government. So you're over a lot of publications. Can you tell our listeners briefly about your role as editor in chief of Sightline Media Group and the different publications you oversee? Mike: Sightline oversees a number of brands, as you mentioned. I like to think of us as the largest national security newsroom in the country. We have two or three different buckets that our publications fall into. What we've really concentrated on the last year or so is working collaboratively across the newsroom. You may recognize specific brands, but I think our reporters are working across several brands or across the newsroom. There's the military times brands, which are Military Times, Army Times, Air Force Times, Navy Times, and Marine Corps Times. Those are geared toward the troops and you'll see those publications, obviously online. They're available at commissaries, and then there's also our business to government groups. What's Happening With the Government TechnologyMike: Those are publications like defense news, which covers the defense industry and what's happening at the Pentagon and on Capitol Hill, the business and politics of defense acquisitions. And also C4ISR net, which focuses more on that network warfare aspect of the defense industry. The last publication we have is Federal Times. It focuses on the federal workforce and what they need and what's happening there on a day-to-day basis. It's a lot, but we have a really passionate and skilled newsroom that thinks hard about these issues. They work really hard to get scoops up and to get enterprise news stories that will help people understand what's happening at their job and make better decisions every day at work.Carolyn: I love the specialization. Obviously, you get a lot of stories that are going to be broad across. But when you take it and get specific to the mission of the different branches and the different missions, I really appreciate that. Mike: I don't like to use the word expert because I think it's overused. But I'd say all of our reporters have a tremendous amount of knowledge in their field. They work really hard to ask smart questions, to be able to explain issues clearly and to know the nuances. I think that comes through in our reporting. Carolyn: I definitely agree and I would absolutely use the word expert. Talk about your perspective on how the DoDs are making advancements in government technology. Do you think they're taking the right steps right now? Mike: This is a difficult question and I think there's such a push-pull that we have to do here. I'm curious how you think of it too. What DoD Has to Do With ITMike: On one hand, I think we have to recognize the complexity of...

Joe Rizzo brings you baseball. Riz and Jeff "Dawg" Healy jumped on Facebook Live for the Yankees @ Mets game, while honoring the late Tom Seaver. Dawg once again got to celebrate a win by his Mets, who trailed 4-0 and 7-4, but rallied for a 9-7 wain on a walkoff two-run homer by Pete Alonso leading off the 10th inning (yes, a two-run homer leading off the inning, because of the extra-inning runner-on-second-to-start-the-inning rule). As the game moved along, Riz & Dawg managed to interact with those in the chat on Facebook Live, and also recounted Seaver, who was known as The Franchise and Tom Terrific, and lived up to that billing. Dawg even wore his vintage Seaver #41 jersey, and told the story of how he got it and where the jersey had traveled (think: Gulf War). We also figured out that Tommy Hutton was the pedestrian player who made his career against Seaver (https://www.nytimes.com/1977/05/28/archives/mets-bow-as-hutton-drives-in-4-hutton-an-old-nemesis-routs-seaver.html). The guys continue to do more shows live, and are looking to move forward to also get it on YouTube, Twitch and other outlets, so keep an eye out for that and give us feedback. We want to know what you prefer! The Veteran of the Day was Seaver. This episode kicks off with a discussion of the national security implications of the mid-term elections. With the Democratic Party retaking control of the House of Representatives, we expect to see fights over Pentagon spending, and more oversight of the Trump administration across-the-board. The show then turns to the curious story of a 1,300-page Army study of the Iraq War that has gone unpublished for two whole years. The case raises broader questions about the entire defense establishment’s capacity for self-reflection and analysis. Recent moves to shield the Pentagon from public scrutiny only add to these concerns. We focus our grievances on President Donald Trump in Europe, the New York Times re: North Korea, and Woodrow Wilson (for lots of things), and we mark the 243rd anniversary of the founding of the U.S. Marine Corps – or, as Bryan calls it, the Navy’s land force (Please direct your hate tweets to @ConsWahoo). This week’s episode is a little less about combat engagements, and more about another deadly threat amongst veterans: suicide. Master Sgt. Orlando Reyes served in three combat deployments to Iraq, but never faced a greater enemy than the one within. The stress from those deployments, the PTSD, and the failed relationships that resulted, drove Reyes to attempt to take his own life. Luckily for him, and others, he wasn’t successful, and because of that, he’s vowed to help save others from suicide. He has since become a top suicide prevention trainer for the Marine Corps, and was even named Marine Corps Times’ 2014 Marine of the Year. Once a Marine who worked tirelessly on the battlefield to keep Marines alive, now Reyes works to save the lives of those Marines who have left it! Time Codes: 00:00:32 - Introduction 00:03:09 - A few words (and a gripe) about the 2018 Eisner Award nominations 00:11:02 - Terminal Lance Ultimate Omnibus 00:37:29 - Death or Glory#1 00:47:28 - Black [AF]: Widows and Orphans#1 01:03:08 - Wrap up 01:04:46 - Contact us This week Paul and Derek focus on three titles that are strikingly different in nature. They begin with Maximilian Uriarte's Terminal Lance Ultimate Omnibus: The World's Most Popular Military Comic Strip(Little Brown and Company). This is a hardbound volume of the entries included on Uriarte's webcomic, and it collects strips published between January 2010 and December 2016, most of what you'll find on the site. Terminal Lance Ultimate Omnibus also include the strips published in the Marine Corps Times. Although the guys know next to nothing about military (specifically Marine) life, they approach this text on its own terms and with a full awareness of its intended audience. Next, they look at Rick Remender and Bengal's Death or Glory #1(Image Comics). Both of the guys marvel over Bengal's art, pointing out that the visuals are what largely drive the narrative in this first issue. But both are also fans of Remender's work, and as Paul points out, this new title bears many of his stylistic stamps. This is a title that has a lot of promise, and it's yet another Remender series for the guys to keep up with. Finally, Paul and Derek discuss something never before covered on The Comics Alternative: a title from Black Mask Studios. The first issue in Kwanza Osajyefo and Tim Smith 3's Black [AF]: Widows and Orphanshas recently been released, and the guys speculate on this ancillary tale in the Blackstoryworld. Although Paul is familiar with this universe, this is Derek's first foray into Black. As the guys discuss, this is an action-packed first issue, although at times a bit chaotic. Some of this confusion, in fact, may be due to the visuals. Nonetheless, it's a title worth checking out.

In this episode of the Mandatory Fun podcast, Blake speaks with Marine veteran and "Terminal Lance" creator Max Uriarte about his newest projects and other current events. Related: 'Terminal Lance' creator talks about the Marine Corps and the future of his comic "When I first started 'Terminal Lance' I was convinced I was going to get my sh*t pushed in," Max humorously explains. "I knew I was going to get in trouble. I was waiting for that phone call." Soon, Max was releasing hundreds of “Terminal Lance” comics covering a wide range of topics, including military customs, the most popular (and the most disgusting) MREs, long-distance relationships, and other aspects of life in the Corps. His latest book "Terminal Lance Ultimate Omnibus" delivers the complete collection of Abe's shenanigans. It features over 500 serialized comics published on terminallance.com, with additional comics previously published only on the Marine Corps Times newspaper, and new, never before published comics. The Omnibus will also include Uriarte's signature blog entries and previously unpublished bonus material. The "Terminal Lance Ultimate Omnibus" hardcover book will be available April 24, 2018. We also discussed Uriarte's new podcast "After Action," a show about national security, military life, and other random bull—t, according to Uriarte. It's co-hosted with Paul Szoldra, the founder and editor-in-chief of the popular military satire site Duffel Blog. You can listen to After Action on iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, and TuneIn. Uriarte joined the Marine Corps in 2006 as a 0351 Marine Assaultman and was stationed at Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. Uriarte deployed to Iraq twice with 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marines in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom between 2007 and 2009. During Uriarte's four years of enlistment in the Corps, he served as SMAW Gunner, Team Leader, Squad Leader, .50Cal Gunner, Combat Photographer, and a Combat Artist. In 2010, Uriarte started the hit comic strip "Terminal Lance," which soon became the single most popular comic strip in the military. In 2016, Uriarte released the world's first graphic novel about Iraq, written and illustrated by an Iraq veteran, called "The White Donkey: Terminal Lance." The "White Donkey" was independently published in February 2016 and was a massive success. Within 72 hours of its release, it was picked up by publisher Little, Brown & Company for smash publication on April 19th, 2016. It’s set to be a blistering weekend, so we’re going to do our best to cool things down this hour with classical music in the woods, golden harmonies soaring over the Willamette, and a brilliant, new blue pigment.Classical Music Meets Silent Disco At Stunning WPA SitesThe pianist Hunter Noack is harking back to the Works Progress Administration era with a concert series called “In A Landscape.” He has invited such musical luminaries as Pink Martini’s Thomas Lauderdale and China Forbes to join him in playing classical music in some of the region’s most famous WPA sites. Think Timberline Lodge, Council Crest, and the Oneonta Tunnel. Noack has a history of bringing music to unlikely places, which is why he agreed to drag a piano out into the West Hills to play a few of the songs for this audio postcard.Sista In The Brotherhood - 7:25The Portland-filmed “Sista in the Brotherhood” follows a day-in-the-life of a black woman working at the Sellwood Bridge construction site. The film is based on the research of producer Roberta Hunte and the real life experience of co-writer and director Dawn Jones Redstone, who spent years working construction and training other women in the trade. The film has been screening around the country at festivals and even won the Best Short Film Award at this year’s Portland International Film Festival. The Band Joseph's Golden Harmonies Soar Over The Willamette River - 17:19One of our favorite musical discoveries last year was the band Joseph. They’re three sisters from Estacada, Oregon, and their harmonies are like that golden tone the sun casts as it sets on the high desert or the Cascade foothills.Allison, Meegan and Natalie Clossner spent the last year on the road, perfecting their harmonies and writing new music. Now they’re back with a highly anticipated follow up, “I’m Alone, No You’re Not,” due out Aug. 26, and the sisters suggested the crazy idea to meet us and opbmusic on the Willamette River's Eastbank Esplanade to play a couple of songs (watch opbmusic's videos). The First Iraqi Vet To Write A Graphic Novel About The War - 25:08While in Iraq, the marine Maximilian Uriarte, a Corvallis native, started writing a comic strip titled “Terminal Lance.” It quickly became a hit and now runs in the "Marine Corps Times." Since returning from the war, Uriarte has expanded the strip into the graphic novel “The White Donkey,” the first graphic novel about the war written by a veteran.Blind Pilot's New Album Navigates Straight To The Heart - 33:15Blind Pilot's newest album, “And Then Like Lions,” may be their most intimate yet. Lead singer Israel Nebeker told us during a performance at the OPB studio that many of the songs were written in response to the death of his father. "And then, as an album, it turned into an invitation into a conversation about loss in general," he said.Scientists Discover The First New Blue Pigment In 200 Years - 43:46Get this: there hasn’t been a new blue pigment created since 1802. Now, we're talking about a new color, as every color already exists in the light spectrum. We're talking about a new pigment — the chemical or substance that gives paint, dye or other objects their color. Pigments have to be derived from nature or made in a lab, which is exactly what happened in 2009 at Oregon State University, when researchers were heating up elements in a furnace. Their goal was to create new materials that could be used in electronics – instead they found a brilliant new blue pigment. And it’s finally making it to the market.

Bruce McQuain from Blackfive joined us once again for Someone You Should Know, our weekly tribute to the troops. Bruce spent 28 years in the U.S. Army and he is a veteran of the Vietnam war. He brings a perspective and understanding to these stories that we could never match. This week Bruce told us about Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Amilcar Rodriguez who earned a Silver Star for his heroics in Afghanistan, "Rodriguez, equipped with his SAW, located the sniper position in a building and pulled the trigger, emptying the 200-round magazine and killing the two-man enemy team. While fighting ensued all around, Rodriguez dashed over to a wounded staff sergeant and quickly began to treat his leg wound and drag him to cover. But suddenly the corpsman felt shocks of pain. Three successive rounds, likely from a machine gun, struck Rodriguez. One round punctured his chest, cutting into one lung, and another sliced into his right arm. Rodriguez, in an interview with Marine Corps Times, recalled the staff sergeant “saw my neck explode” from one of the rounds. Although wounded himself, the Marine grabbed bandages to stem Rodriguez’s bleeding as the corpsman tried to get both of them to safety. At the time, Rodriguez couldn’t see his right arm, and he couldn’t feel it. He quickly assumed it had been blown off in the fighting. Rodriguez was undeterred. “I was prepared for life without my arm,” he said. Just then, another Marine ran onto the rooftop and pulled Rodriguez toward a stairway. That’s when he realized that his arm was still intact, although it wasn’t functioning and he couldn’t feel anything. Another sergeant trailed them and brought the wounded staff sergeant off the rooftop to safety, and a spec ops medic team worked on their wounds. The young soldiers were flustered, Rodriguez said, so he talked them through the steps and helped calm them down. “It was their first combat experience,” he said. Rodriguez and several wounded men eventually were evacuated." The Someone You Should Know radio collaboration began as an extension of Matt Burden’s series at Blackfive. He brings a perspective and understanding to these stories that we could never match. This week Bruce told us about Marine Corps Sgt. Aubrey McDade Jr. Here is an account from Marine Corps Times, JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — These days, drill instructor Sgt. Aubrey McDade Jr. is making Marines to win battles, but two years ago he was saving Marines during battle. His actions on Nov. 11, 2004, in Fallujah, Iraq, have earned him the Navy Cross, the Navy’s second highest award for valor. The medal was presented to him during a ceremony at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C., during a recruit graduation ceremony Jan. 19. McDade, a drill instructor with Charlie Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, was a machine-gun squad leader with 1st Platoon, Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 8th Marines, in Iraq in 2004. On the night of Nov. 11, as the Marines in the platoon moved south into the city, they entered an alley where they immediately met a barrage of small-arms and machine-gun fire, according to McDade’s citation. “In the opening seconds of the engagement, three Marines were seriously wounded as the well-positioned and expecting enemy pinned others down,” the citation states. McDade “rushed from the rear of the platoon column toward the kill zone,” leading a machine-gun team into the alley to spray suppressive fire at insurgents. The wounded Marines were pinned down under a blanket of gunfire that spewed furiously every time the other Marines tried to reach their injured comrades. McDade told the platoon sergeant that he would get them. “He just informed me that if I got hit he wasn’t going to be able to help me right then,” McDade said in an interview. “I wasn’t just going to let them sit out there like sitting ducks.
