He was just honored by the Queen City Council for his work with veterans. Edie is a father, husband, and Marine. He shipped out to basic training a month after his high school graduation (on his birthday). He deployed twice in support of OIF. At only 1 year old, he crossed into the US in the arms of his grandmother where he was reunited with his mother. His family is originally from El Salvador. Together they settled in Jamaica, Queens, where he would grow up.     On this episode of Veteran Et Cetera, we explore the many lives of  Robert “Buddy” Hackett. He lives the Good Life as Plato spoke about in Phaedrus (375 BC).  Here's a view of Buddy's life.Buddy is a native of Massachusetts. He graduated from St. John's Preparatory School and was in the distinguished military corps of cadets at Norwich University. He was in the class of 1990 but was deployed to the Middle East, as an 0311 Marine Rifleman, during the Persian Gulf War of the early 1990s. Buddy completed his BS degree in Communications after his combat deployment in the Middle East and he was part of the legendary Norwich University Rugby Football Club. Additionally he motivated lots of Marines at Norwich as serving Semper Fidelis Society President.  After Operation Desert Storm,  Buddy remained serving as a Staff Sergeant in an elite Marine STA (Surveillance and  Target Acquisition) Platoon. He has had a career in corporate for many years and has coached numerous individuals in the business community. Buddy is a successful veteran entrepreneur as the owner of Renaissance Firearms and is the co-founder of a  Veteran Non-Profit Organization called On the Hunt Veteran Strong that exposes veterans to the outdoors.     On this episode of Veteran Et Cetera, we have a veteran who has inspired many in his humble yet stellar attitude and warrior way of life.  John Winn Bey joins us! John has been a pioneering Force Recon Marine and as a Ranger in Surviving the Cut originally aired on the Discovery Channel in 2010 and featured John Winn Bey transcending the most advanced military leadership training "Ranger School".  Back in the 90s John was a champion  on the legendary show American Gladiators.  John's other trailblazing ways was being chosen for Mark Barnett's classic Post 9/11 special operations training reality show"Combat Missions" hosted by the  legendary Navy SEAL and TV hit Show "Survivor" star Rudy Boesch.   John Winn Bey's life is not just his pioneering television presence as a Warfighter.  John's background includes his rich family tradition and his service to his country.  John left a promising college program to serve in the US Marines.     Mike Kurth: A Ranger from Black Hawk Down Speaks...

    On this episode of Veteran Et Cetera, Mike Kim discusses the overlooked aspects of the Battle of Mogadishu with Mike Kurth.  Mike Kurth served as an Airborne Ranger with 3rd Ranger Battalion from 1991-1996. He is known for being a significant figure in the Battle of Mogadishu.  Kurth has been portrayed in the movie Black Hawk Down and wrote about his Mogadishu experience in the highly acclaimed book The Battle of Mogadishu: Firsthand Accounts from the Men of Taskforce Ranger (2005).   The award winning documentary show Frontline provides this biography of Mike Kurth during the Battle of Mogadishu: He was a Helicopter Radio Operator for Sgt. Watson, Chalk III - Super Six Six. Basic mission was to update the Commander on their position and situation and keep Sergeant Watson in contact. Physically stayed with Sergeant Watson on all the missions, except the October 3rd -- had to be pulled for security as well as do the radio communications.     Recon Scholar ! Today's podcast Mike talks with Stuart (Stu) Doyle, a Marine Recon Reservist, Amateur MMA fighter and scholar with a M.S. in Criminology, about his thoughts on veteran readjustment culture. BioStu's admiration for the Marine Corps started at age 9 and by age 13 he had focused on becoming a Recon Marine. At age 17 Stu headed for boot camp, then infantry and straight for the Basic Recon Course. He spent the rest of his active enlistment with 1st Recon Bn and deployed to Afghanistan as a Recon Marine. Stu completed a BA at Columbia in Neuroscience and Behavior followed by a M.S. in Criminology at University of Penn. As a source of income during college, he selected security related work for billionaires and after his Ivy League studies he settled in Hollywood and continued with employment in high level security. However, Stu found he needed more of a challenge and returned to the Corps.
