Hello Friends,I want to apologize for not getting the Catholic Morning Offering up the last few days.  I went on retreat from Thursday through late Sunday, and I had planned to record those days in advance and put them up, but we had a terrible storm, which included 80-90 mph winds, pass through this area last Wednesday night, and we lost power for about 22 hours.  About 220,000 people in this area lost power, the largest number in history, I believe.  Some people are still without power after five  days, so your prayers for them would be appreciated!  Happy Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord!Starting the morning off with God is the key to strength and success in your day!Join me in praying the Catholic morning offering, as well as hear meditations, learn about the saint of the day,  and hear today's Scripture readings from Holy Mass.Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/deannapierw)To sign up to receive a daily email of the Morning Offering through The Catholic Company, go to https://www.morningoffering.com/Excerpts from the English translation of The Roman Missal © 2010, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. Happy Feast of St. Mary Magdalene! Hello St. Mary Magdalene,  Thanks for tuning into this week's video with me, Fr. Chris. There's a lot going on this weekend as we are celebrating our patronal feast day this weekend so you'll hear some beautiful prayers during the Mass centering on Mary Magdalene and her role as the “Apostle to the Apostles” as the Church refers to her. She is given this title because, as the first person to see Christ Resurrected from the dead, she is sent to the Apostles to proclaim the Good News. In Greek, the language in which the New Testament was written, Apostle comes from “Apostelos” which means “to be sent” so, she, as the “Apostle to the Apostles” can literally mean “the one sent to the ones who are sent.” This same Greek root is the origin of the term “apostolate” meaning the area in which we're sent to bring the Gospel. How blessed then, that we, spiritual sons and daughters of St. Mary Magdalene rejoice in her being the first person to see the Risen Lord. This patronage too is commemorated in our sanctuary artwork with the Latin phrase “Vidi Dominum” which means “I have seen the Lord” the same message she gave to the Apostles 2,000 years ago.   We have the great joy then in sharing this vision of the Risen Lord especially in the Eucharist, the source and summit of our faith. How providential then that the national Eucharistic Convention is currently underway in Indianapolis on this same weekend. Indeed, the Eucharist is the venue through which we too can see the Risen Lord just as Mary Magdalene did. In honor of this, I want to share with you several resources that I have read and recommend in order to foster a deeper love of Christ present in the Eucharist. First, is this wonderful book “St. Mary Magdalene: Prophetess of Eucharistic Love” by Fr. Sean Davidson. In 200 pages this book offers scriptural, historical, and theological perspectives on Mary Magdalene and the radical way in which her encounter with Christ inspired her to change her life and how we, modeling her repentance, can allow Christ to change our life as well. I have about 20 copies of this book which I am happy to give away, if you would like one please email me and I will be happy to leave you a copy.  Second, I would like to recommend Pope St. John Paul II's 2003 encyclical “Ecclesia de Eucharistia” (Church of the Eucharist) where the late holy father inspirationally writes on the Eucharist and its centrality in the life and mission of the Church and of every Catholic. It's about 20 pages so it can easily be read during prayer times in the adoration chapel.  Third, is Pope Benedict XVI's 2007 Sacramentum Caritatis. This 40 page post-synodal exhortation offers spiritual and practical insights on the Eucharist and how we can prepare our souls spiritually to receive Christ. It can be technical and/or practical at times since it's also addressing questions on topics like proper reception of Holy Communion, and active participation in the liturgy.  Fourth, and lastly, is the USCCB's 2021 document “The Mystery of the Eucharist in the Life of the Church.” This 30 page document offers practical and spiritual insights oriented towards a deeper appreciation and entry into the great gift of the Eucharist. There are some phenomenal quotes from saints in here that afford many opportunities for prayerful contemplation of Christ present in the Eucharist. These writings from the USCCB, Benedict XVI, and JPII are all available online and are linked in the description of this video!  In conclusion, I also want to say thank you to everyone who stepped up at my recent adoration appeal. We went from over 40 hours with no adorer down to less than 10! That is awesome and it means that perpetual adoration can continue. Now, it is incumbent upon all of us, however, to maintain our commitments in order to ensure a prayerful space to encounter Christ while simultaneously ensuring safety for all adorers and the Blessed Sacrament! Have a wonderful feast day weekend and may our Eucharistic Lord draw you ever more deeply into His infinite, eternal love! Document links:  1. Happy Feast of St. Benedict coming up on July 11!I'm excited to have had Fr. Robert Nixon back on the show as a repeat guest! What a wonderful priest and sharp intellect! Enjoy the conversation on St. Benedict!SummaryIn this episode, Father Robert Nixon, O.S.B. discusses the cross and medal of Saint Benedict, its origins, meaning, and power. He explains that the medal is a devotional object that can serve as a reminder of God's plan and a powerful protection against evil. Father Nixon also highlights the importance of understanding the significance of devotional objects and the role of faith in their efficacy. He emphasizes the influence of Saint Benedict and the Benedictine order in spreading Western Christendom and preserving knowledge throughout history.Takeaways* The cross and medal of Saint Benedict is a devotional object that serves as a reminder of God's plan and a powerful protection against evil.* Understanding the significance of devotional objects and having faith in their efficacy is important.* The Benedictine order played a significant role in spreading Western Christendom and preserving knowledge throughout history.* Monasteries were centers of learning and contributed to the preservation of manuscripts and the spread of education. The spiritual wisdom of Saint Benedict has endured for centuries and quite literally shaped Western culture from its inception. Tenets of the order, like its motto and Saint Benedict's Rule, are just as influential for lay people as they are for the Benedictine monks and nuns. The cross and medal of St. Benedict is also among the gifts bestowed by the Benedictine Order. For centuries, it has been a conduit for God's power against malicious spirits. The history of this cross and medal—how it first came about, how it was used, miracles attributed to its use—was not easily apparent, nor readily accessible. However, this book successfully delineates the history, theology, and potency of the cross and medal of St. Benedict. Drawing from a number of ancient and reliable sources, Fr. Robert Nixon has compiled, translated, and edited a most powerful book on the cross and medal of St. Benedict. With this book, you'll learn from various saints and holy men as the history of St. Benedict's cross and medal unfolds. In doing so, you will learn about the life and legend of St. Benedict, the Father of Western Monasticism, who established the most ancient religious order. TRANSCRIPT Good evening, Happy Feast of Saints Peter and Paul, and welcome back to Popeular History! That's right, we're officially off hiatus, starting next week you can expect a short Cardinal Numbers episode every Saturday and a longer Popeular History worldbuilding episode every month. As I continue to get a feel for the rhythms of family life that seems like a doable schedule, especially since most of the work for the remainder of the year is already done. Alleluia! I also have some special stuff for you today. First off, I want to wish a very happy birthday to Cardinal Seán O'Malley of Boston. This birthday is bittersweet, because the next conclave is officially losing a real one as Cardinal O'Malley is 80 today and is therefore automatically no longer a Cardinal Elector. This brings the total number of current Cardinal Electors to 125, and for what it's worth I am fully expecting another consistory for the creation of new Cardinals to be announced later in the year once that's in danger of dropping below 120. When I call Cardinal O'Malley “a real one”, naturally that's partially a reference to the fact that he's a Buckeye, partially a reference to the fact that he's one of the few bearded churchmen in the Latin Rite, partially because of the amazing nature of being able to see him mowing the lawn in his habit, and partially because he was the fixer brought in to bring Boston out of the mess it was in scandal wise after the troubled tenure of Cardinal Law. One day I will get to covering Cardinal O'Malley and the other older Cardinals in Cardinal Numbers, but for now my focus for that show is on covering the younger cardinals who will participate in the next conclave when the time comes. By the way, Cardinal Numbers now somewhat accidentally has its own feed again. I wasn't financially prepared to have two podcast feeds active, but I forgot to cancel the subscription, so might as well roll with it! All my content will be posted right here on the Popeular History Feed of course, but Cardinal Numbers specific content will also be posted on the Cardinal Numbers feed so that can also develop as a standalone rexypod, which was the original intent. There is also officially a bit of Paton-exclusive content now! But don't worry, I'm not paywalling knowledge, that goes against my principles as a librarian. We'll see some early access situations, sure, but there is never going to be something for you to learn that's only going to be on my Patreon feed. Instead, it's going to be more pure fun extension stuff like the episode I just posted where Fry from Pontifacts kindly agreed to be subjected to my look at Cardinal Burke and give her live reactions! She also managed to get me talking a little more loosely than I normally would. It was a great time and I'm looking forward to making more content for my Patreon Patrons, if I ever get any of those to make more content for! Hint hint. Patreon.com/popular, go check it out!   Finally, I've decided that I've been sitting on the Habemus Pointsam recordings Bry and I have already made for too long, in part because I always worry files will just disappear. So the rest of today's show will be the draft pilot for that mini rexypod. Get ready for some foolishness and categories in 3…, 2…, 1… HABEMUS POINTSAM RECORDING

December 27, 2023   Today's Reading: John 21:20-25Daily Lectionary: Isaiah 51:17-52:12; Matthew 2:1-12This is the disciple who is bearing witness about these things, and who has written these things, and we know that his testimony is true. (John 21:24)In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.  Merry Third Day of Christmas!Happy Feast of St. John!  John is one of the Twelve.  Apostle.  Evangelist.  The one bearing witness about these things.  Or as he originally said it in Greek, the one martyring about these things.  To be a martyr is to be a witness.  Normally we use that word to talk about those who bore witness to Christ by being killed for Christ and the faith that He has given.  It is said that St. John is the only apostle who died a natural death; Jesus spared him the violence of being physically martyred.  And yet, his life and ministry for the decades that followed Jesus' resurrection and ascension were full of a witness through John's preaching and celebrating of Christ's sacraments. The world is full of darkness.  And not just the darkness at this time of year, with later sunrises and earlier sunsets.  Sin, death, and the devil are always trying to surround us and fill us with cold and darkness, doubts and fears, to keep us away from Jesus.  The Beloved Disciple witnesses Christ to us, and reflects the Light of the World (John 8.)  Jesus scatters the darkness, radiating His Gospel light, and the darkness has not overcome it (John 1:5.)Christ cast the bright beams of His light by forming John and the other apostles in faith, proclaiming His Law and His life-giving Gospel.  And they, in turn, witnessed.  Martyred.  They reflected the bright beams of Christ's light to all who heard His Word in their preaching and writing.Daily, the devil tries pulling you back into the darkness, overwhelming you so you feel alone and cut off from the Light of the World.  Like St. John in his elderly years, after the other apostles had all been martyred, you might even feel like you alone are left, and you're surrounded by those who are against Christ.  But Jesus has rescued you and given you new birth from above (John 3), claiming you as His own.  You are not alone.  Jesus has sent the Comforter and has overcome the world for you (John 16.)Jesus has overcome any hurt, heartache, overwhelm, and  darkness.  And He gives His saving Gospel to you through St. John (and the other prophets, apostles, and evangelists that He inspired.) Through the witness of St. John and these men moved by the Holy Spirit, Christ gives light to you and the world. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.Merciful Lord, cast the bright beams of Your light upon Your Church that we, being instructed by the doctrine of Your blessed apostle and evangelist John, may come to the light of everlasting life; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy SPirit, one God, now and forever. “We are reading to fast!”  This is typically something that we would never say about our study groups. However, as we sit at the feet of St. John Climacus, we come to the realization that we could sit with a single saying for months on end and not fail to be nourished.  We concluded our discussion of Step 23 and the difficulty with blasphemous thoughts. The evil one in his envy will seek to distract us with blasphemous thoughts that come like a flash of lightning before the mind. Our one response should be to lay this great burden upon the Lord, to entrust it to him, knowing that it comes not from our hearts but from the malice of the evil one.  In Step 24 Saint John begins to discuss meekness, simplicity, and guilelessness. As Saint John begins to define it for us, we suddenly experience ourselves as moving too briskly. Meekness is an “unchangeable state of mind, a rock overlooking the sea of anger”. These thoughts alone are enough to alter our view of this great virtue. In the face of the chaos of living in a fallen world or the experience of the hatred and anger of others, meekness becomes a buttress that is unshakable and keeps us from being swept away by touchiness of mind or irritability of heart. Meekness creates the desire for simplicity; to create a place where the Lord will find rest within us. It allows us to maintain dominion over our heart by the simple act of mortifying the intellect and private judgment. In the weeks to come, may we linger along with these thoughts and come to desire this great virtue.   ---   Text of chat during the group:   00:01:31 Suzanne: Hello! It seemed to work and get a laugh.   00:31:47 Suzanne: equanimity   00:33:05 Fr Marty, ND, 480-292-3381: Learn of Me, for I am meek and humble in heart. It seems, then, that depending on Christ and becoming like Christ transforms us into being humble. So, it seems like it's part of the process of theosis. Is this so?   00:33:37 sharonfisher: How can insecurity be transformed to meekness? I guess I'm asking how to display the strength I feel in Jesus Christ, but the body belies.   00:34:30 Anthony Rago: Something that helps me deal with anger -and bad thoughts - is that any bad thought against a man really reflects on the Lord,  the ne Adanm. And any bad thought against a woman really reflects on our Lady, the ideal of a woman. I don't like that so it helps keep the interior life in check, to dash the infants of evil thoughts against the rocks.   00:38:02 sharonfisher: Replying to "How can insecurity b..."   Thank you - I think my question was more self-centered (ie, not appropriate!)   00:38:38 David Swiderski: On my door to my room I have a quote which I see when I leave and when I go to bed- (In loving one another, God in us made flesh). I often find I fall short at night but seem more careful the next day.   00:40:08 sharonfisher: Reacted to "On my door to my roo..." with ❤️   00:40:58 Daniel Allen: This conversation about meekness makes me think of “the kingdom of heaven suffers violence and the violent carry it away” which is very much not being a doormat. So it's a matter of that violence being directed towards biting our own tongue (or what have you) and not against another.   00:45:09 Suzanne: Fr. Ripperger talks about demons putting negative perspectives on things that are pure illusions, and that get us angry.   00:46:38 Ashley Kaschl: To Suzanne's point, it's the cogitative power of the brain that Fr. R talks about, which makes associations, and is why asking the Lord to protect our faculties is so important

Happy Feast of St. Blaise! Hello St. Mary Magdalene,  Today's video is a short reflection on St. Blaise, a 4th century bishop and martyr who died in 316.  He's associated with throats and candles because he worked a miracle saving a young boy from choking on a fish bone which had become lodged in the boys' throat. Candles come from Blaise's imprisonment when a woman brought him two candles so that he'd have light in his prison cell. This woman had received a miracle from Blaise earlier when he saved her prized pig from a wolf. So cool these saintly connections! Let us ask St. Blaise to pray for us that we may stay in good health.  Blessing of St. Blaise, "Through the intercession of St. Blaise bishop and martyr, may God deliver you from every disease of the throat and of every other illness. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.  God bless,  Fr. Chris Visit us: https://www.smarymag.org Support us online: https://membership.faithdirect.net/AZ754

Happy Feast of St. Mary Magdalene! Hello St. Mary Magdalene,  Last week I communicated that we've had a two week delay on our re-opening date, today I'm confirming that we're on track to meet that deadline and confirm that we are planning on re-opening on August 13th and 14th at all Sunday Masses that day. Daily Masses will resume in the full space on August 15th. Thank you again for your patience. To that end, I wanted to share with you all too, in this Flocknote and on our website you'll find a wish list of items for our new sanctuary space. We're asking for these new items in order to ensure consistency, coordination, and coherence of our liturgical items so that they match thematically. It's similar to doing a remodel in your home and needing new furnishings so that the décor matches. Our old liturgical furnishings will be donated to another parish. I have some ideas in mind and am coordinating that in the weeks to come. Also, today, July 22nd is our patronal feast day, St. Mary Magdalene, so I'd be remiss if I didn't share a few thoughts about her. She's often referred to as the “Apostle to the Apostles” a title which denotes her beautiful role and mission as the first witness of our Resurrected Lord. It's not an indicator that she was ordained a priest, she wasn't, but she was given a special role. Our word “Apostle” in English comes from the Greek “Apostelos” which means to send. Biblically we see this word used in the New Testament with a double meaning, indicating either mission or rank (such as Peter and Paul the Apostles). In reference to Mary Magdalene then, it's this first context that the Church applies to Mary Magdalene, that she was sent to announce the Good News of Jesus's Resurrection to the Apostles who were then sent out to proclaim that same message to all the world. Mary Magdalene then, today is venerated in a particular way reminding us that the call to evangelize, to share the Good News of Jesus Christ isn't just a role for bishops, priests, and deacons, but for all the baptized, all those who love Jesus. Therefore, in honor of St. Mary Magdalene, who's an apostle in your life? Who's someone that's bolstered your faith? How can you share your faith with someone today and everyday?  God bless,   Fr.
