In Australia this year, one woman has been violently killed every four days. Increasingly we are aware of the way abusive behaviours form patterns over time to create and maintain power and dominance over another, whether emotionally, sexually, spiritually, or financially. This is not an isolated issue affecting a few but an issue that impacts everyone, across every social divide. Our culture and indeed our church so often misguidedly believe that love can still be present where one group or individual dominates another. The church has not only been silent, but in some of its teachings has actively supported structures of dominance and control. May is Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month. Jenny Clark is the Domestic and Family Violence Project Officer for the Anglican Church Southern Queensland. She joins the podcast for this conversation that explores the power and misuse of power that is present in structures and teaching of the church, how this can enable abuse and what we can do about it.  If this podcast raises issues for you and you need to talk; 1800RESPECT (1800 737 732) This is a 24-hour national sexual assault, family and domestic violence counselling line for any Australian who has experienced, or is at risk of, family and domestic violence and/or sexual assault. Welcome to the We Have Hope Podcast where we will discuss school choice options in West Virginia, the Hope Scholarship, and more! Today, we are talking with Founder & Executive Director of Love Your School, Jenny Clark, to learn more about how the program was started, and where it is going!Jenny Clark was homeschooling her two young boys, and felt that something was ‘off'.  A friend suggested that she have them evaluated. In the evaluation, she was told that the boys did not have any learning disabilities, but the struggles she was facing were due to them not having a ‘proper education'. This didn't sit right with Jenny, so she obtained two independent evaluations that uncovered the boys were experiencing dyslexia and dysgraphia. Jenny's experience inspired her to become an advocate for other parents and families to help make them aware of their rights and resources. She wanted to help them know what questions to ask. This calling brought her to start Love Your School in her home state of Arizona.Fast forward to two years ago, Jenny was asked by the Cardinal Institute to do interviews about the Arizona Empowerment Scholarship Account program. She was then invited by them to West Virginia to interview and report on the Hope Scholarship potentially getting passed through the legislature, but it unfortunately did not pass. One year later, the Hope Scholarship was passed, so Jenny started trying to get vendors from Arizona to start servicing West Virginia families. This began her desire to expand Love Your School to West Virginia. Students are back in school in Arizona, but it feels a little different this year. Now, every parent in the state has the option to either keep their child in public school or spend their $7,000 in taxes on educating them another way. The new law affects 1.1 million K-12 students, making Arizona the “gold standard” in school choice, according to our two guests. Corey Deangelis—national director of research for the American Federation for Children and executive director at Educational Freedom Institute—says this is part of a growing trend: “School choice candidates are winning. This is becoming a litmus test issue for Republicans in particular.” Jenny Clark, an Arizona mother of five, explains everything about how Arizona's Empowerment Scholarship Accounts (ESA) work. Jenny Clark is proud to be celebrating 30 years of sobriety. In this episode, Jenny shares her story of recovery from alcoholism in an effort to help others. At first Jenny was embarrassed to admit she was an alcoholic. However, in the end she decided she didn't want to pass this on to her daughters. Although we can't make somebody else want to get sober, and it's hard to break the patterns, we can educate ourselves and offer support. We've been told "don't say anything" all of our lives. Let's say something.   Jenny is well known as The Oprah of Federal Contracting. Furthermore, She's the CEO of Solvability, a company that helps small business win federal contracts by focusing on competitive pricing and profitability. Also, she's the Founder of GOVCON Summit, a virtual accelerator network for small businesses in federal contracting, especially veteran entrepreneurs who hire veterans.    Episode Highlights:   First, Jenny talks about the day she decided to stop drinking. Jenny went to therapy over several years. But none of Jenny's therapists asked her if she thought she was drinking too much. At first Jenny was embarrassed to admit she was an alcoholic. In the end she decided she didn't want to pass this on to her daughters. You can't make somebody else want to get sober and it's hard to break the patterns. Next, Jenny talks about her need to make others feel comfortable when she wasn't drinking. Also, gratitude was key for Jenny's recovery. Then, Emily starts to cry as Jenny brings up Emily's son's alcoholism. Next, Jenny talks about the secrets we tend to keep.  After that, Jenny talks about how her family members used alcohol to fit in. Then, Emily shares what it was like to live with a "functioning" alcoholic, her former husband. Also, Jenny finally realized she was being selfish as she was drinking, thinking it wasn't impacting others. Next Jenny describes being drawn into others' accommodating lifestyles. To stop drinking, Jenny felt she'd have to give up her friends. Jenny offers to help listeners make a different choice and to break the patterns. Alcohol impacts everyone differently and Jenny was going for the feeling of euphoria. People arrange their lives around alcohol and Jenny was self medicating using alcohol. Sad Lovers and Giants with Simon Allard in conversation with David Eastaugh  The original lineup included vocalist Garçe (Simon) Allard, guitarist Tristan Garel-Funk, bassist Cliff Silver, drummer Nigel Pollard and keyboardist/saxophonist David Wood. Following their debut EP Clé and the "Colourless Dream" single, both issued in 1981, they released their debut studio album, Epic Garden Music in 1982. It reached No. 21 in the UK Independent Albums Chart. During this initial period they recorded a John Peel Session for the BBC, and a live concert for Radio Netherlands Worldwide in 1983 (later released as the album Total Sound in 1986).Live performances included headline dates at UK colleges and clubs with occasional trips to Europe, although they did support the Sound at a major London venue on the day Epic Garden Music entered the charts. The singles "Lost in a Moment" (1982) and "Man of Straw" (1983) both made the UK Independent Singles Chart, reaching No. 48 and No. 31, respectively. European interest in the band grew, and with the 1983 release of second album Feeding the Flame , they toured Germany and the Netherlands, gaining a dedicated fanbase. Tensions within the band caused a split, with Garel-Funk and Pollard leaving to form the Snake Corps. During a hiatus, their label Midnight Music released the In the Breeze collection in 1984, which included one of their previously unreleased signature tunes, "Three Lines". SLAG returned in 1987 with an updated lineup including original members Allard and Pollard along with newcomers Tony McGuinness (guitar), Juliet Sainsbury (keyboards) and Ian Gibson (bass), releasing a new album that year, The Mirror Test. As interest abroad grew, the band performed extensively in the Netherlands, Spain and France, and headlined at the Marquee Club in London. Original bassist Silver returned, replacing Gibson, and they released a fourth studio album, Headland, in 1990. After the 1991 release of Treehouse Poetry, Midnight Music folded and the band split once again, coming together occasionally for gigs supporting And Also the Trees at London's Marquee Club and Electric Ballroom. E-mail from Eternity, a best-of compilation, was released by the record label Cherry Red in 1996 after the company picked up the Midnight catalogue. In 2000, McGuinness formed progressive trance trio Above & Beyond with Jono Grant and Paavo Siljamäki, also initiating his electronic dance music labels Anjunabeats and Anjunadeep. In 2002, Sad Lovers & Giants released their sixth album, Melting in the Fullness of Time on Voight-Kampff Records, recorded predominantly by Allard and McGuinness with studio contributions from Sainsbury, Snake Corps bassist Liam McGuinness, drummer Kevin Mathews, and two members of Lovebabies, vocalist Jenny Clark and guitarist Bob Bradley. They played two dates in Italy a year later. Another reformed lineup (Allard, McGuinness, Pollard, Gibson) played in Italy and Greece in April 2009, coinciding with Cherry Red's rereleases of Feeding the Flame and Epic Garden Music. Keyboardist Will Hicks joined later in 2009. During 2010, the band played a handful of live dates in Athens and Barcelona (supported by the Snake Corps and the Essence, both previous Midnight bands), reissued The Mirror Test, and recorded a new 7" double A-side single, "Himalaya". They played at the Purple Turtle in Camden in December 2011, which was their first London gig since the early 1990s. In 2012, they played gigs in Berlin and Salerno and began writing and recording new material for a future album. An extensive interview feature on SLAG appeared in the autumn 2013 and spring 2014 issues of music magazine The Big Takeover. In 2014, frontman Allard published an autobiography of the band, Things We Never Did – The Story of Sad Lovers & Giants. In March 2016, Sad Lovers & Giants embarked on a short tour of North America, performing mainly on the West Coast. They made their U.S. live debut at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas. In 2017, Cherry Red issued a five-disc retrospective box set, Where the Light Shines Through 1981-2017. On 31 October 2018, the band released their seventh studio album and first in 16 years, Mission Creep.
