The Simpsons executive producer and co-showrunner Matt Selman joins Drew and Roth to talk about something only he knows: the food at SoFi Stadium. But seriously, Matt explains what it's like making the historic cartoon in 2023, how necessary it is to have silly people together in the same room, and how to make jokes for people who've been watching the show for decades. In the back half, they hit the weirdness of the college football championship, the betting food chain of sports, and if Bill Belichek knows he's tanking. At 34 seasons (751 episodes) and counting, The Simpsons holds the rare distinction of being the longest running American sitcom, scripted primetime series and American animated series. Of course, a lot can change over the course of 34 seasons, both inside and outside of a series — from animation styles, casting, and comedic voice, to the culture in which the show exists (and satirizes). In this conversation from Season 12, showrunner/executive producer Matt Selman's provides an inside look at what it means to showrun one of the most pop-culturally significant series of all time, and how The Simpsons continues to evolve 24 years into its run. This conversation was recorded live at ATX TV Festival Season 12 (June 1-4, 2023) in Austin, TX.PANELISTS:Matt Selman (Showrunner / EP - The Simpsons)MODERATOR:Trevor Scott (We Are Austin, CBS Austin)SUBSCRIBE to youtube.com/ATXTV for more panels, conversations & events with your favorite TV creatives and casts.FOLLOW ATX TV:Twitter: twitter.com/ATXFestivalFacebook: facebook.com/ATXFestivalInstagram: instagram.com/atxfestival/TikTok: tiktok.com/@atxtv
“Flaming Moe” (January 16, 2011) Today, LGBTQ characters on The Simpsons get to be more than walking gay jokes, and, really, this is one of the first episodes that shows Smithers as a (mostly) out member of the larger community in Springfield. It's not perfect, however; there's an homage to the 2008 film Milk that lands strangely, there's a hetero love subplot for Skinner that takes acts two and three, and there's a trans joke that underscores how advances in representation for LGBs didn't include the Ts. But this episode, penned by future showrunner Matt Selman, shows the series is learning and evolving. Watch Drew's supercut of every LGBTQ joke on The Simpsons (season 1 through 31) to get that view count over 4 million. Watch the new season of Ninjago: Dragons Rising June 1 on Netflix! And if you don't know what a Ninjago is, watch Ninjago Decoded, starting here. You can now watch Glen's movie, Being Frank, on Freevee via Amazon Prime — and now also on Apple TV. WATCH IT NOW!

Jordan and Matt discuss West LA lunch spots, restaurant etiquette, a love of Chinese food amidst the West LA New York-style Chinese food drought, and how Jordan and Homer have a little too much in common. Join Scott, Kevin, and Hamish as they welcome a very special guest, Simpsons executive producer Matt Selman, for a revisiting of the hilarious Boston-themed episode "The Town"! Listen as Matt shares some inside details about the episode, including its original story, involving conspiracies and red coats, a one-time only Easter egg for a re-airing of the episode, and how it became a wonderful love letter to Boston, how an episode is made, as well as the New England Patriots' recent improbable championship win, and how The Simpsons eerily predicted the victory and parade back in October! They'll also discuss Tom Brady's uncharacteristic local commercial, their individual experiences watching the big game last Sunday, and various Boston area eateries. If that wasn't enough, Matt addresses questions about a possible Simpsons movie sequel, a (hopefully far off) series finale, and also talks about a possible episode for next season, and much, much more! Tim Long is a very talented writer, producer & consultant for The Simpsons and has been racking up Emmy nominations & wins for many years. What do we talk to Tim about?? We talk to Tim about The Simpsons, duh!! We even talk about other Simpsons writers/producers (and Decently Funny favorite guests) Sam Simon, Mike Scully & Matt Selman. But we also touch on some moments from his personal life as well. How did Tim get started writing & land the head writer position for David Letterman? What did an inebriated Tim Long steal from Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane's house? What 80's movie has Tim considered adapting into a Broadway musical? Does a great writer like Tim enjoy Twitter? How much would a Tim Long Emmy trophy go for on EBay? All this and so much more. For example, Tim is a great game show guest as well. Listen to him play a game of "Play it Forward" where he has to match answers with last week's Decently Funny guest, 2x Stanley Cup Champion, NHL star Dustin Penner. We apologize, but it was 95 degrees in LA while we taped the podcast, so you may hear the low hum of the air conditioning in the background but it won't ruin your listening experience.
