Matthew Distefano joins Michael to talk about the sequel to his book "Heretic," called "Heretic Too." It's provocative, insightful, humorous, and healing. We discuss the book and the many issues he addresses therein as an exvangelical, including what it means to follow Jesus, sexuality, women in the "church," corporal punishment, the nature of sin, the doctrine of hell, violent theology, and how to pray to an uncontrolling God. Restorative and healing, the book is a must read and our conversation is a must hear for anyone who continues to question their inherited doctrines.Find Matthew's book here: https://www.amazon.com/Heretic-Too-Matthew-J-Distefano-ebook/dp/B0DFRR3JJB/

Smith, an ex-Southern Baptist Pastor whose journey led him to explore Neopaganism and Taoism; Matthew DiStefano, a book publisher dwelling in the realm that lies between Christianity and secular humanism; and Caleb, a practicing Bahá'í.What common threads of belief connect these diverse individuals? And how do they navigate disagreements while fostering an attitude of openness towards people with differing perspectives and beliefs? Together, they engage in a candid examination and confrontation of the beliefs that have historically served as barriers to coexistence, thereby promoting a deeper understanding of the human experience among those who hail from and identify with different religious and cultural groups.Connect with us Tune in to our live podcast recordings on instagram Email: Ideasdigest@gmail.comShow sponsors Quoir PublishingMusic: Lawson Hull Instagram Spotify

What can hobbits teach us about power, violence, greed, and climate change? Pastor Adam talks with Matthew Distefano about his latest book, "The Wisdom of Hobbits: Unearthing Our Humanity at 3 Bagshot Row".
On today's show, we'll reflect on how Easter has become a religious shit-show and we're also joined by Keith Giles and Matthew Distefano to talk about Quior Publishing's new venture into class literature - and why books matter and shouldn't be banned. Let's just be honest for a moment. Easter has lost the plot within modern Christendom and reveals the rot within the faith. Easter is supposed to be a high holy day that is supposed to symbolize hope and renewal, yet it's turned out to be more about consumerism and empty displays of religiosity. While Jesus Christ, who Christians believe died and rose from the dead, was all about love, compassion, and empathy for the marginalized and oppressed, many modern-day Christians seemed to have missed the memo. Instead of practicing these values, they used the holiday to justify hateful rhetoric and discriminatory policies towards those who are different from them. It's no wonder that Easter has lost its meaning. The commercialization of the holiday has reduced it to nothing more than a chance to buy chocolate bunnies and attend an over-the-top church extravaganza. The true significance of the resurrection of Jesus has been overshadowed by superficial displays of religiosity that do little to forward and embody the ways and teachings of Jesus. It's time to use Easter as a wake-up call and realize how off-course Christianity has gone. It's about embodying the principles of love, compassion, and empathy that Jesus taught. So, as we reflect on this past Easter, let's recenter our faith in these values and work towards creating a world that is more inclusive, empathetic, and compassionate. Let's challenge ourselves to live up to the principles of Jesus, rather than using them as an excuse to promote hate and division. Only then can we truly honor the message of hope and renewal that Easter should represent. We can do better. We must do better. We'll talk about all that and plenty more snark! So you're deconstructing...now what? Matthew Distefano is back on the show for a conversation on learning to embrace the mystery of faith when certainty is fleeting. It's a raw and honest conversation and we enjoyed our time with him. Hello everyone! It's Friday which means another episode of Truth Wanted is going to get sent to your eyeballs from the illuminated pixels on your screen. This week, ObjectivelyDan is joined by Matthew J. Distefano.First call of the night is Nick from California who is curious to why more Atheists and skeptics aren’t investigating the supernatural such as paranormal activity. Part of the reason is that these phenomena have been instigated by skeptics in the past and the results didn’t point to a supernatural cause. There is also the factor of cultural beliefs impacting a person’s interpretation of events to match their preexisting beliefs.Next up is Mohammad from California who wants to explain what caused them to become more religious, as well as the reason why they are becoming less convinced in their belief in a god.Our next caller is Adrian all the way from Jamaica. They are wondering how they can go about telling others that they are Atheist. Remember when coming out as an Atheist is to make sure that you are able to do so without impacting your physically safe. While it is nice to be able to have these discussions with others who may disagree with you, those conversations are not more important than your own personal well being. Our final caller is Nate from Canada who wants to talk about the haunted house they used to live in. The caller recounts the many experiences where their family heard footsteps leading up to the front door, but whenever they would check, there was no one there. Thanks for sharing your story with us Nate, it was a wild ride!Thank you all so much for watching this week's episode of Truth Wanted! We hope you enjoyed the show! Until we see you again, stay safe out there and keep wanting the truth.
As America joins most developed nations with Church attendance no longer a majority activity, we ask: Is organized religion doomed, and what's worth saving? Matthew Distefano has been a shining light in a church that seems to have lost its way. Jesus was a person of color, killed in an act of state violence, but how often is moral leadership seen from those who would claim religious authority? Pablo and Chris share their experiences of why religion is worth saving. Heretichappyhour.com Allsetfree.com

Ol’ Matt Distefano drops by Ryan’s office through the magic of the internet. It took Ryan multiple attempts at troubleshooting a very simple problem before we were actually able to record. Once we got our technical issues worked out, Matt opened up about his horrible gut issues, weed, faith, and his time as a scene kid. Mason is on point with his questions and insight and Ryan bumbles through the conversation like the half-an-idiot he is. There’s lots of laughing, too. Lots of it. Too much, really. By all means, hit him up on Patreon and donate your entire paycheck to him, or subscribe to Heretic Happy Hour, or, you know, message him through Facebook and tell him what a heretic he is. ----more---- This episode is not sponsored by anyone, but you are more than welcome to just donate money to us through the PayPal link on our website. In this episode of Mental Podcast, Michelle Collins and Seth Showalter continue their discussion on Religious Trauma Syndrome as part of the Trauma Trials Series. To refresh, Religious Trauma Syndrome (RTS) is a group of symptoms that arise in response to traumatic or stressful religious experiences. RTS is not an official diagnosis in the DMS-5; however, it is a common experience of those involved in fundamentalist religious groups, cults or abusive religious settings. In their mental minutes, Michelle admits to being "sassy." Michelle accuses Seth of being annoying and Seth accuses Michelle of yelling at him. All in good fun. Michelle acknowledges that depression has been lurking and describes a feeling of impending doom. Seth details a weekend at home where he was able to visit family. The plan was to engage in the True False Film Festival but plans changed. For this week's subject matter, Michelle and Seth discuss spiritually abusive messages. Seth begins the discussion by clarifying the distinction between bashing religion versus addressing traumatic experiences caused by religious institutions and culture. Not all churches are abusive nor Christians bad people. Don't get it twisted. However, there are abusive situations centered around religious (including Christianity) and people do get hurt. That is what we are speaking about. To address the topic of abusive situations, Michelle and Seth review spiritually abusive messages that are a common pattern of commentary that over time lead to trauma. A sample of abusive statements covered include: "Don't question the anointed," "Don't question," and “Don’t trust yourself or your instincts. Trust me—I’m the spiritual, smart one.” Many others are reviewed. For this week's lived experience, Michelle and Seth sit down with prolific author and podcaster, Matthew Distefano. Matthew's books can be found at allsetfree.com. Such books include but are not limited to Heretic!, From the Blood of Abel, and the Bonfire Sessions. Matthew is also one of the hosts of the Heretic Happy Hour Podcast. To illustrate the power of abusive messages, Matthew shares how his wife's family has responded to coming out as bisexual. Matthew is married, is remaining married and is not polyamorous. Nothing is changing in the bedroom. He is simply standing up and taking pride in his true identity (which is wife is on board with). However, the response of his wife's family has caused grief. In fact, he's been accused of having affairs and his wife's family have cut ties; essentially ex-communicating them. His wife's family's actions are likely rooted in religious messaging that are so strong they're willing to remove their daughter and granddaughter and son in law due to fear and lack of understanding. Religion can certainly complicate things. Michelle and Seth sat down with famous author, Matthew Distefano, to discuss his lived experience after deciding to come out as bisexual. Matthew is a best-selling author, blogger, podcaster, long-time social worker, and hip-hop artist. He is an outspoken advocate for nonviolence and is happily married with one daughter. Parts of this interview were shared in Episode 56. However, since there is so much discussed that may be helpful to others, this is being released as its own interview. Michelle and Seth spend the first 20 minutes catching up on their Mental Minutes. Michelle is beginning prep for another body building competition and Seth was recently in Denver, Colorado for a suicide intervention train the trainer event. This episode was recorded before the event so there will be much, much more that is shared next week. At about 20 minutes into the episode, Matthew's conversation with Michelle and Seth is released. Matthew is married, has kids, and has no plans of stepping out on his marriage. However, he had decided to own his sexuality and identify himself as bi-sexual. Listen in to learn how well this played out. I'll give you a hint: it did not go as well as he had planned. This episode is a continuation of May's focus on Religious Trauma Syndrome which is part of the Trauma Trials Series. Learn more at mental-podcast.com.
