The remade Gallery is constantly roasted for its lack of personality. But maybe that's just what makes our Fashion District a hidden gem. Maybe.
In this episode of 10x Your Team with Cam & Otis, Patrick Mate of Patriot Jean Co shares his entrepreneurial journey of rebuilding an American-made denim supply chain. Patrick discusses the challenges and triumphs of sourcing materials domestically in a post-COVID world, emphasizing the importance of persistence and relationship-building in the face of countless rejections. The conversation delves into the complexities of reconnecting fragmented supply chains, the value of American manufacturing, and the unexpected opportunities that arise from taking bold entrepreneurial risks. Whether you're an aspiring business owner or a seasoned leader, this episode offers valuable insights on resilience, innovation, and the power of community in building a successful enterprise.More About Patrick:In late 2022, Patrick founded Patriot Jean Co, a testament to his belief in American craftsmanship and quality. With a spark of curiosity, he ventured to the heart of North Carolina's historical denim industry, immersing himself in a Denim 101 class. Not only did he gain deep insights into the craft of jean making and forging deep contacts in the industry, but he also saw the potential to rejuvenate the proud legacy of American denim.Harnessing his background in supply chain and program management, Patrick established an exclusive partnership in the Fashion District of L.A., focusing on the design and quality of the jeans. Going a step further, he orchestrated a supply chain team dedicated to sourcing every material from within the USA. From denim to zippers and even the labels and tags, Patrick ensured that Patriot Jean Co's commitment to American-made products remained unwavering, even if it meant restarting dormant factory lines and absorbing additional costs. The statistics are startling. Every year, 450 million pairs of jeans are sold in the USA, but most are produced in countries like China, Turkey, Pakistan, and Vietnam. By 2017, all major denim jeans brands had offshored their production processes. Today, the average pair of jeans embarks on a 17,000-mile journey before finding a home with a US consumer. Patriot Jean Co is here to change that narrative.By choosing us, you're not only investing in a superior pair of jeans but also contributing to bringing jobs back to the USA. Beyond jeans, our commitment to American-made products extends to everything we offer, including our range of trucker hats, t-shirts, and more.Join us in celebrating and reviving the spirit of American craftsmanship.

The Sixers recently announced plans to build a new arena in Center City. It would be located in the Fashion District and right next to Chinatown. It would be called 76 Place, and it's being targeted for a 2031 opening. It's a long time away and a lot can happen between now and then, but we wanted to ask a few questions anyway. What would it look like? How would it change Center City? How would it impact the neighborhood? We asked all these questions and more to Harris Steinberg, Executive Director of the Lindy Institute for Urban Innovation. The Phoenix Mercury standout and two-time Olympic gold medalist acknowledged in court this month that she had the canisters, but said she had no intent to break the law. They survived the one-year postponement, soaring costs and some public opposition. The aftermath is as difficult to untangle as the Games were to pull off. The Games were to drive tourism and showcase Japanese technology. The pandemic squelched that. The official price tag is $13 billion. The Tokyo city government picked up $5.4 billion in Games expenses and it is now trying to champion post-Games uses for a half-dozen new venues. The head of the Tokyo Games says a main legacy will be using Tokyo to drive a bid for the 2030 Winter Olympics in Sapporo. "You can make the world beautiful just by refusing to lie about it" - Gio Ponti (1891-1979)Welcome to Episode #54:The last day of a travel adventure can be a quite distilling, generally it is a tricky day where the emotions run up and down, with that inner knowing that something special is about to end. Sometimes it can be a relief, sometimes the wheels fall off the cart, and sometimes the pressure to just enjoy it all can be simply too much, yet whatever the case it is a day to enjoy and revel in no less. And that is why I organised a ticket to the Villa Necchi Campiglio in the heart of chic Milan. Not far from the Corso Venezia and the Fashion District on Via Monte Napoleone, this urban and modernist villa is quite the inspiration if you are interested in Italian design and Beautiful Things….Please find all Show Notes and details mentioned at: michellejohnston.lifeYou can now Support the Podcast and send your encouragement.© 2022 A Writer In Italy - travel, books, art and lifeMusic Composed by Richard Johnston © 2022Support the show

Lucille Glenn Swain was born on May 27, 1920 in Saluda County, South Carolina. She is the second oldest of nine children (7 girls and 2 boys). When Lucille graduated high school in 1940, she moved to New York. She knew her younger siblings wanted to go to college, but she also knew her parents who were poor farmers, could not do it alone. Consequently, she convinced her parents to let her go to New York to work and she sent money home to help her family for many, many years; even until her parents death. Lucille has lived in New York for 80 years!! During her time in New York, Lucille held several jobs. Her first job was to work for a family as the live-in help. Shortly after that she began working in the Fashion District for the owner of a fur coat store. On more than one occasion, she was asked to model, but because of distrust of "the fast life" (as she called it), she never took that job. Other jobs Lucille had included working at an undergarment factor and eventually R.C. Green Day Care, where she retired in 1982. Lucille met and eventually married Ralph Swain and they had an incredible life until his death in 1994. Lucille loves traveling and over the years have had cruises to the Caribbean Islands, Jamaica, and Mexico. She has also visited Atlantic City, Hawaii, California, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia--just to name a few. Lucille is currently the mother of her church, Hebron Baptist Church in Brooklyn, New York as well as one of its original founders. Lucille is the oldest of three surviving sisters: Gladys, Ruth, and Grace. Though she never had children of her own, her sister Grace's oldest daughter Dr. Wandy Taylor, became her godchild and they are as close as any parent and child could possibly be. Lucille loves her family and she loves the Lord. Her mantra is to "treat everyone the way you want to be treated." On May 27, 2020, Lucille Swain became the first in her family to reach this centenarian milestone.

Color is the most relevant ingredient in Chelsea Boxwell's work. She takes fondly about the similarities between house paint and shiny pink fabrics she finds around the warehouses in The L.A. Fashion District. Painting is an act, and she paints without a conception in mind. The concept of the painting comes after. Equally, the installation of her work is site-specific, in correspondence with the specific room at a specific time. Also, glitter makes everything more active and she keeps an optimistic attitude. This is a special episode made in collaboration with Royale Projects, on the occasion of the group show If You Steal My Sunshine - California Abstraction Now, installed in the gallery November 3 – December 22, 2019.

As Dave puts it, "In most companies, there is a visionary and an integrator. Will is the visionary. I am the integrator." From managing artists in college and throwing parties in frats, to building their first facility in North Philly and then recently at 9th and Market - the Fashion District of Philadelphia. It has been a beautifully, strenuous journey in building out this dream and vision, but Dave and Will are grateful for the entire process. …on creating modern day memorabilia. Johnny Zito and Tony Trov are the minds behind South Fellini, a Passyunk Avenue boutique of cheeky pins, hats, and tees that are inherently Philly. Two friends from South Philly, they first started collaborating while attending Temple University where they made tee shirts to fund for their short films and rock operas. They’re award-winning comic book artists, indie filmmakers and they’re joining the show on the eve of their new store opening in the Fashion District to talk about working within a budget, how working on comics informed their filmmaking, font crushes and that time Bryce Harper crashed their site.
Episode 33 - Joshua Kopel and how his southern charm and cuisine has taken over the LA restaurant and bar scene In this laughter packed episode I have the pleasure of talking to Joshua Kopel, owner of Preux and Proper, South City Fried Chicken and Five0Four Hollywood. We talk about how he came up through the industry from working in some of the busiest bars in the south to owning a Fine Dining venue in LA. Hailing from humble beginnings in Baton Rouge, LA, owner/operator Joshua Kopel wanted to bring a little bit of The South to Southern California. In 2010 he opened Five0Four, a New Orleans style bar, in Hollywood. Four years later, Kopel looked to DTLA, broadened his focus from Bourbon Street to The South as a whole, and opened up Preux & Proper. After a rocky first year in The Fashion District, Kopel was ready call it quits. In walks Sammy Monsour, a third generation chef that grew up in his father’s kitchen in Chapel Hill, NC. Kopel and Monsour hit it off instantly, and what came to fruition was the best kind of Southern. Monsour’s food encompasses his classical training at the CIA, his Lebanese ancestry, and his Southern roots. It’s like your grandma’s food went to school, traveled around the world, and came back to you beautifully plated with one hell of a story to tell. It is their mission to inspire Southern Culture and Hospitality throughout their restaurant and community and that really comes through on this valuable podcast. On today’s podcast I interview Allen Compton, Principal and Founder of SALT Landscape Architects and Rachel Allen of Rachel Allen Architecture, who, among other projects, are helping to reimagine one of the more contested public spaces in America: Pershing Square. Our conversation in their studio space in Downtown LA’s Fashion District, was discursive and exploratory, probing the themes of homelessness, architecture, landscape architecture and urban design and exploring how those design disciplines are poised to respond to the challenges of homelessness in a city where the phenomenon is most prevalent and widespread. We explore the deliberate design of Skid Row, Allen’s work for the Skid Row Housing Trust and the future of downtown LA’s open spaces, but we started the conversation with their reflections not as designers, but as Angelinos.

When Dave Richeson was eleven-years-old, he was accosted and almost shot dead by eight cops when leaving his Dallas hotel room to go to the swimming pool. He has been at police gunpoint twice since, for no other reason than the color of his skin. Today, he spends a lot of his time intelligently and powerfully advocating against America's still-deeply-ingrained racism; promoting Black Lives Matter and railing against the continued senseless killing of blacks by law enforcement officials. Recorded prior to this week that saw two more slayings in Minnesota and Louisiana, and culminated in the murder of five police officers in Dallas; we discuss the way race relations is getting worse and examine what needs to be done to fix implicit racial bias in the country. Dave is also a former money trader who chucked a high-powered job to set up a theatre company and pursue acting and creative writing. He currently works in PR and is a member of The Institute of Hermetic Philosophy. Set up 50 years ago by Chilean philosopher, Dario Salas Sommer, it is an educational program that believes in promoting the power of consciousness in today's society. Throughout our lives we are programmed and conditioned to believe certain things which tend to cloud our interpretation of reality. Becoming ‘more conscious' involves removing all this coagulated mental ‘gunk'; experiencing life and nature with a greater sense of truth and self-awareness; and eventually finding what it is you're supposed to be doing with your life. “The Stellar Man” that changed Dave's life is here on amazon: http://tinyurl.com/gqswta6 And here's the website for The Institute: www.ihpusa.org/ Release date: July 10th 2016 Runtime: 40m Recorded: New York Sponsored by Stitch Bar and Houndstooth Pub in New York's Fashion District
