Nothing sells like power and the Mazda3 with the turbocharged 2.5-liter 4-cylinder should be very popular with people that like cars. Mazda is shedding it's rowdy side for a more refined performance image. This is no Mazdaspeed3 and that's probably a good thing. Standard all-wheel drive tames torque steer and the suspension keeps things fun without any harshness. Tom Voelk checks out a fully loaded Premium Plus model. It's a step up from Civic, Corolla, Forte and Sentra and an alternative to GTI. Maybe even Audi A3, BMW 2-Series and Mercedes A-Class. Maybe.

Are they the perfect halfway house between fossils and EV, or should people make the jump these days to full electric? That’s this Saturday.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.     UK DECEMBER SALES FIGURES Matthias Schmidt @auto_schmidt   "Tesla Model 3 made it into the UK's top 10 registrations list in December with 2,824 registrations. The financing round was led by the fund company T. Rowe Price, Blackrock and included previous investors, Amazon and Ford." reports electrive.com: "Amazon already added a $700 million financing round in February 2019, Ford invested $500 million in April and has since been planning further collaborations with the start-up. In September, Cox Automotive had invested another $350 million – but the fourth round in December was the largest of the year. Amazon and Ford, have increased their involvement in Rivian – but the amount of their involvement has not been revealed."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/01/06/rivian-collects-1-3-billion-in-financing/   AMAZON-BACKED RIVIAN WILL INTEGRATE ALEXA INTO ITS ELECTRIC PICKUP AND SUV "Rivian  will integrate Amazon’s  voice assistant Alexa into the R1T pickup and R1S SUV, the company’s first electric vehicles that are set to debut at the end of the year." says TechCrunch: "Rivian said Monday it also plans to extend the Alexa integration to 100,000 electric delivery trucks that Amazon has ordered from the automaker. The electric vans are expected to start delivering packages to customers in 2021. The integration into the R1T and R1S will give owners access to standard Alexa features, such as playing music, placing calls and navigation, as well as the ability to control the climate, open and close the trunk and other vehicle features. For instance, owners will be able to remotely tap into the camera embedded in Rivian’s pickup truck from Amazon screen-based services like Echo Show and Fire TV to check on whatever gear is stashed there."   https://techcrunch.com/2020/01/06/amazon-backed-rivian-will-integrate-alexa-into-its-electric-pickup-and-suv/   WHAT AUTOMAKERS ARE SHOWING AT CES "as the auto industry grapples with technology-fueled disruption from electrification, autonomous driving and upstart business models, CES is becoming the venue of choice for brands to prove to consumers, and each other, that they are embracing the future of mobility." writes Automotive News Europe: "BMW will tease an interior concept for its i3 EV.  Fisker will debut the Ocean all-electric crossover, powered by an 80-kWh lithium ion battery pack and with an expected range of up to 300 miles. Ford will show its 2021 Mustang Mach-E crossover. The highly anticipated mass-market EV, with a 300-mile range. Nissan will showcase its Ariya electric crossover concept. The forecast takes into account Tesla’s history of production delays, potential supply-chain constraints and the complexity of manufacturing high-quality cars at scale, LMC Automotive said. Tesla, a pioneer in electric cars, probably will have an edge for the next one-to-two years before competition starts catching up, said David Whiston, an analyst at Morningstar Inc. in Chicago."   https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-01-06/musk-plans-to-come-to-shanghai-for-debut-of-made-in-china-tesla   And from Electrek: "Tesla always said that they plan to produce both the Model 3 and Model Y at Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai, but they never confirmed a timeline for Model Y. Model Y is supposed to go into production in Fremont for the US market in the next few months. It was rumored that production in Shanghai could be not too far behind, and now Tesla is expected to lay out a clear plan to bring the vehicle in production in the country. Tesla is talking about expanding the already giant factory in order to produce the Model Y at the plant."   https://ww.electrek.co/2020/01/06/tesl-model-y-program-china-model-3-delivery-event-elon-musk/#   TESLA BEGINS CLEARING TREES AT GERMAN GIGAFACTORY 4 SITE "Crews in Germany have started preparations for the groundbreaking of Tesla’s Gigafactory 4. Recently-shared videos from the piece of land in Grünheide, Germany revealed that some trees are currently being cut down to make way for the upcoming electric car production plant." according to Teslarati: "Environmentalists have not been expected to protest or make any attempts at halting Tesla’s progress at the site. Tesla initially announced that deforestation would result in the company planting three times as many trees to replace those that have been cut due to Gigafactory 4’s construction."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-gigafactory-4-deforestation-groundbreaking-event/   TESLA GIGAFACTORY 4 DOCUMENTS HINT AT DEDICATED BATTERY CELL FACILITY "Recent filings for Tesla GF4 show the site layout for the massive complex, listing the primary buildings that will be constructed on the site. Among the most noticeable parts of this layout is a large area marked “cell.”" according to Tasmanian: "The size of the building marked “cell” in GF4’s planned layout inspires a lot of speculation. Based on its size, it appears that Tesla may be looking to manufacture actual battery cells on location in GF4."   https://www.tesmanian.com/blogs/tesmanian-blog/tesla-gigafactory-4-battery-cell-productionfacility   EV SUBSIDIES EXTENDED IN SEVERAL US STATES "Several US American states have launched initiatives to support the electrification of their traffic. Massachusetts and Delaware extended their subsidy programmes, while Ohio is angling to introduce one. California extended traffic benefits to include those driving used EVs." says electrive: "Massachusetts will be extending its subsidy program until the end of 2021, with BEVs receiving a grant of $2,500 and PHEVs with at least 25 electric range receiving $1,500.Delaware is extending its subsidy program by one year until the end of 2020. $2,500 for BEVs, $1,000 for PHEVs – each up to a list price of $60,000. That will drive an electric motor with 141bhp and 195lb ft of torque and give a range of around 130 miles. The lithium ion battery pack is made in Japan by Panasonic. Mazda’s engineers have also tuned the torque delivery of the MX-30’s electric motor to be less frenetic than is often the case with EVs, reasoning that they want the MX-30 to feel less like a dramatic change from a typical internal combustion engine vehicle."   https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/mazda-favours-smaller-batteries-upcoming-evs   PATREON UPDATE I want to say a massive thank you to ASEER KHALID who upgraded his support from EXECUTIVE PRODUCER level, and opted to support with more outof the blue. We've completed testing of the 2019 Mercedes A-Class, and discuss how it performed at our track; does the small sedan live up to the luxury nameplate? We also discuss Ford's issues with its Explorer and Aviator models, and why problems with a brand new car aren't as uncommon as you might think. And why are windshield replacements becoming more expensive? We answer that, as well as questions about our tire testing, and the lack of Japanese cars on European roads in our audience Q&A segment. ————————————————— Subscribe to Talking Cars on Apple Podcasts! Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Tuesday 19th June edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport.   TESLA RESPONDS TO 'EXTRAORDINARILY UNUSUAL' FIRE I've steered away from this story because it really was just a random video on Twitter, and who knows the background. The Tesla Model S belonging to West Wing actress Mary McCormack. The video, posted to Twitter on Friday, shows the Tesla parked on the side of Santa Monica Boulevard in Los Angeles, with a small jet of flame shooting out from underneath it. It looks unlike every video I've ever seen of an EV fire and as you can imagine, if there's something online I'm more interested than most. Tesla have issued a statement: "This is an extraordinarily unusual occurrence, and we are investigating the incident to find out what happened. Our initial investigation shows that the cabin of the vehicle was totally unaffected by the fire due to our battery architecture, which is designed to protect the cabin in the very rare event that a battery fire occurs. While our customer had time to safely exit the car, we are working to understand the cause of the fire. We’re glad our customer is safe." Tesla has made 300,000 cars they've produced, which have travelled 7.5 billion miles and only five incidents of cars catching fire per billion miles travelled. S. Federal Highway Administration that shows there are 55 incidents of fire for every billion miles driven when looking at all automobiles in the country.   http://www.cbs8.com/story/38443215/west-wing-actress-mary-mccormack-says-husbands-tesla-caught-on-fire-out-of-nowhere-watch   MERCEDES EQ C IN NEW SPY SHOTS com has new spy shots of the Mercedes EQC, in what they call a near-production prototype, with the hanshtag switchtoEQ on. "The black and blue body cover has a contrasting splash of colour at the back where Mercedes slapped on a red strip all over the tailgate on the taillight level and we can see the tape is extending onto the rear fenders. Even though the body design still remains largely concealed underneath the wrap, the EQ C already looks substantially different than other three-pointed star SUVs, such as the similarly sized GLC for example." says Motor1: "The large mesh up front might trick you into believing the EQ C has a conventional grille, but being fully electric, it doesn’t need one. Pictured above, the concept had a panel mimicking the appearance of a traditional grille and we’re expecting the production-ready model to feature a similar look. At the back, the aforementioned red tape could be a clue suggesting the zero-emissions CUV will have a full-width light strip in the same vein as the showcar." Michael Kelz, Chief Engineer for the EQC, says: "“With the finishing straight in sight, we are now able to absolve another extremely demanding test programme with our pre-series vehicles. But after successfully completed endurance tests in winter at minus 35 degrees C, we are confident that the heat trials will confirm that we are well on schedule for the start of series production.”   https://www.motor1.com/news/249422/mercedes-eq-c-new-spy-photos/   MERCEDES A-CLASS HYBRID COULD GET ELECTRICALLY DRIVEN REAR AXLE Meanwhile, Anthony Karr writes about the new Mercedes A-Class and a new Plug In Hybrid for next year: "Autocar claims the hybridized powertrain of the A-Class PHEV will combine a 1.3-liter gasoline engine with 163 horsepower (121 kilowatts) and an electric motor on the rear axle, providing additional 90 hp (66 kW). This layout will basically turn the A-Class into an AWD vehicle, hence the A250e 4Matic predicted name." There's no full BEV A-Class plans I've read about, however if you apply the pattern for Mercedes, that would be an EQ A equivalent.   https://www.motor1.com/news/249433/mercedes-a-class-hybrid-details/   NISSAN FREEZES FUEL CELL CAR DEVELOPMENT "Nissan is halting its development of fuel cell cars. Company officials have concluded that demand for the vehicles is unlikely to take off anytime soon." according to NHK: "Nissan announced plans in 2013 to develop and mass-produce fuel cell cars with Daimler of Germany and Ford of the United States. But the company says high vehicle price tags and delays in setting up hydrogen stations have limited the market potential."   https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20180618_27/   KIA’S SOUL EV MODEL IS GETTING POPULAR Whenever I talk or tweet about the Kia Soul EV, or the Niro EV, or the Hyundai Kona EV, it gets a reaction. Those Korean cars are finding a fair few fans around the world. "Kia Motors said Sunday that seven out of 10 Soul models of cars it sold in Korea in the January-May period were electric vehicle variants, with overall local sales jumping 13 percent from a year earlier. "Gasoline and diesel-powered Soul models are also available in the domestic market, but they were outpaced by the EV version in terms of sales due to a growing demand for environmentally friendly vehicles."   http://koreajoongangdaily.joins.com/news/article/article.aspx?aid=3049443   SECOND RENAULT ELECTRIC VEHICLE EXPERIENCE CENTRE Following their experience centre opening in Stockholm, Renault have opened their second experience centre, in Germany, based in a busy shopping centre. According to Sebastian Blanco at Forbes: "here are digital and static displays that give information about EVs and the purpose of the store, "is to engage with customers and answer frequently asked questions about electric cars, while promoting the benefits of driving such vehicles," the company says. Test drives and vehicle orders can be arranged at the new store as well." "Given that Nissan is the electric vehicle sales leader, and that it is part of the same corporate alliance with Renault, would a collection of EV-only storefronts make sense in America? They wouldn't necessarily be able to sell the Leaf there, given our auto dealer laws, but Tesla has had success spreading the EV news with its stores and that's a mission that would undoubtedly help sell more Leafs through normal retail channels."   https://www.forbes.com/sites/sebastianblanco/2018/06/18/nissan-renault-ev-only-store/   JAPAN NEDO LAUNCHES $90M SOLID-STATE BATTERY PROJECT "Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) has launched the second phase of a major solid-state Li-ion battery project in a quest to achieve both high energy density and safety in batteries for electric vehicles" reports Green Car Congress: "The project ultimately aims to lower the battery pack cost to around ¥10,000/ kWh ($90/kWh) by around 2030—about one-third the cost for existing lithium-ion batteries. The research also targets a fast-charge time of 10 minutes, also around one-third of that needed for lithium-ion batteries."   http://www.greencarcongress.com/2018/06/20180617-nedosslib.html   ZERO ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE UK DEMO TOUR Last weekend, on Sunday, San Francisco's Zero Motorcycles started an eight stop tour across the UK, giving riders a chance to test ride the company’s latest model range, reports RideApart.com, on InsideEVs "One of the biggest obstacles electric motorcycle manufacturers have to overcome isn’t merely churning out a quality product, but convincing the public to actually give eBikes a try. With the electric powertrain’s full torque always on tap at any point, eBikes are a lot more fun to pilot than most would expect" “Riding a Zero is quite an experience so we’ve decided to go out and take our bikes to the people, to give them an opportunity to try one for themselves,” explains Zero’s UK Country Manager, Dale Robinson. “Lots of people have preconceptions about electric motorcycles but I’ve never met anyone yet who didn’t come back from a test ride with a smile on their face. There’s no hard sell, just an opportunity for riders to ask any questions they may have, take one out for a ride and make up their own minds on electric motorcycles.” June 24 North Yorkshire, June 27 Hampshire, July 21 & 22 Northumberland, August 18 Scotland, August 19 Scotland and September 19 Surrey.   https://insideevs.com/zero-electric-motorcycle-demo-tour-starts-today-in-uk/   NORWAY’S FIRST ELECTRIC AIRCRAFT TO TAKE OFF ON MONDAY And finally, yesterday you and I were talking about the Jaguar powerboat. Now Norway’s first electric aircraft is 6 days away from take off. The electric aircraft, an Alpha Electro G2 produced in Slovenia, is scheduled to take off from Oslo Airport on Monday afternoon. The plane can carry two passengers and takes two hours to charge. Anja Bakken Riise of Norwegian environmentalist NGO Future in Our Hands says: “Unnecessary flights contribute to damaging the world’s climate through enormous carbon dioxide emissions. This aircraft shows it is possible to fly on electricity. The point of the flight is to show it's possible"   COMMUNITY Le Mans hybrid batteries.   You can listen to every previous episode of this podcast on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, YouTube, TuneIn, Stitcher, and the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. Friday 13th April 2018. MODEL 3 TIME SHIFT Steve Jobs was famously coined by Apple engineers in the early 80’s as having a reality distortion field. And now another genius has introduced us to another phrase, although this time himself. Welcome to Elon Musks time shift. Whatever you do, don’t call the Model 3 delay, a delay. It’s a time shift. “You’ll definitely get your car,” the chief executive officer told CBS in an interview aired Thursday. “It’s a six- to nine-month time shift. That’s literally it, and three of those months have already passed. “It’s mostly, like, people cancel because, you know, they just needed a car and we didn’t have a car for them. As long as you can see that you’re ascending levels of hell, that’s OK”   ELECTRIC MERCEDES S-CLASS TAKES ON TESLA MODEL S If you’ve checked out any previous podcasts we recently talked about the rumoured electric version of the Mercedes S Class, the EQS. Bloomberg say: “Mercedes-Benz is developing a battery-powered sedan about the size of its $90,000 flagship S-Class, challenging Tesla Inc.’s Model S for high-end electric-car buyers. The new full-size sedan, dubbed EQ S, will be part of the Daimler AG unit’s push to introduce 10 all-electric vehicles by 2022, Chief Executive Officer Dieter Zetsche said Wednesday during the presentation of the revamped Mercedes A-Class hatchback in Split, Croatia. The EQ line will be flanked by plug-in hybrid models offering a “totally different” battery range than today, while conventional vehicles will feature so-called mild hybrids with 48-volt technology in a shift away from pure combustion power. “All vehicles will be electrified,” Zetsche said.”   CHEVROLET BOLT OTA UPDATES Only 24 hour ago on the podcast I was saying about how all EVs should be updated over the air, because a trip to the dealer to install updates is mad. It followed the story of Chevrolet asking Bolt owners to go back for a software update. I then stumbled on InsdieEV’s putting who got to the bottom of things they say : “as far as we could tell, even if the remote updates were initiated, this problem would still require a visit to your local dealership. It seems that almost overnight, the story may have changed. Perhaps not having to issue a recall and deal with a wider amount of negative press, GM got its act in gear to quickly move forward with the new technology? Not only do we have the automaker’s official letter, but also the following video explaining the OTA process and how it works.” Check out InsideEVs for that letter.   VOLKSWAGEN ANNOUNCE ON BATTERY PLANT VW make a LOT of cars, so when they go all in on electric cars, they need a lot of batteries. They won’t be making the cells but they’re making the packs, and they’ll be making up to 500,000 of those a year at their oldest factory, first opened in 1938, their Braunschweig plant. Herbert Diess, CEO of the Volkswagen brand, made the announcement yesterday: “The Volkswagen brand is doing its utmost to develop and produce the electric cars of the future in Germany. The battery system is an elementary part of the value chain – and we bundle the expertise for this important technology for the whole of Europe in Braunschweig.” And if you wondered why I said Diess, not CEO Muller, it’s because “Volkswagen is seeking to replace Matthias Mueller with the head of its core brand, Herbert Diess, as part of a broader overhaul of its management structure to boost efficiency, two people familiar with the matter said. Newslook” USA Today reports: ” In addition to his job as CEO, Diess will directly oversee vehicle information technology as well as group development and research. He is expected to closely shape VW's strategy on self-driving cars and electric vehicles.”   SWEDEN’S ELECTRIC ROAD According to the Guardian newspaper today: The world’s first electrified road that recharges the batteries of cars and trucks driving on it has been opened in Sweden.” Maybe they’ve been looking at their neighbours in Norway getting all the EV attention! The technology uses an electric rail embedded in a public road, and it links Stockholm Arlanda airport to a site 2km away. The electricity moves from two tracks of rail in the road via a movable arm attached to the bottom of a vehicle, a bit like the inverse of a tram, or the new electric buses you see with the conductors above them. However this technology doesn’t stop you changing lanes or overtaking. The electrified road is split into sections of 50m with each ones being powered, and activated by cars on it. The Guardian continue “When a vehicle stops, the current is disconnected. The system is able to calculate the vehicle’s energy consumption, which enables electricity costs to be debited per vehicle and user.”   FIRST VOLVO ELECTRIC TRUCK ANNOUNCED Volvo Trucks now introduces its first all-electric truck for commercial use – the Volvo FL Electric for urban distribution and refuse operations 185 kW electric motor, max power/130 kW continuous output, two speed transmission 2-6 lithium-ion batteries, totalling 100-300 kWh. Range: Up to 300 km. Charging: AC charging via the mains grid (22 kW) or DC fast charge via CCS/Combo2 for up to 150 kW. Recharging time: From empty to fully charged batteries: fast charge 1-2 hours (DC charging), night charge up to 10 hours (AC charging) with maximum battery capacity of 300 kWh. The first two Volvo FL Electric trucks will be operated by refuse collection and recycling company Renova and haulage firm TGM. The Off Peak City Distribution project studied the effects of goods transport at night in central Stockholm. By avoiding peak hour traffic the trucks were able to do their jobs in one-third of the time compared to daytime operation.   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested.
